Kloke & LQ - "Computer Bubblers" (Pugilist & Tamen remix) (4:50)
Review: Echo Chamber open up their vault for the first time in 2025 with this powerful set of collabs with the bossman Lo Quality AKA LQ. Keeping it strictly southern hemisphere, all link-ups are relatively local as LQ brings the best out of his production partners. NZ craftsman Midnight Dubs brings big atmospherics to the opener 'Westwind Rebels' while Pugilist brings some immense fire to the fittingly titled 'Wild & Erratic'. Elsewhere LQ goes solo on the UK-inspired 'A Lovely Area' before Pugilist and Taman end the EP with a powerful twist on a previous LQ collab (with Kloke) - 'Computer Bubblers'. Keep on bubbling.

Vintage (3:20)
Wistful (4:06)
Be Humble (4:44)
Amethyst (4:18)
Review: Modern Hypnosis rolls onto its 11th release and it's another deliciously deep dubstep trip into sub-aquatic realms. 'Vintage' is patient and roomy, full of ricochetting hits and bulbous bass wobbles with fragments of vocal floating throughout the mix. 'Wistful' is a more kinetic cut with busy leads and energetic drums that are pent up with potential as a moody vocal adds extra tension. 'Be Humble' then comes on strong with crashing hits and the sort of ice-cold synths that cut through any dancefloor. Last but not least is 'Amethyst', a more bright and optimistic cut for sunnier days.

Daggers (3:36)
Misanthrope (5:40)
Micro Dose (6:32)
Review: Pugulist is the alias of Alex Dickson and he is known for skewering many a different genre and mashing them up into his own new forms. He operates in between techno, house, breakbeat, and jungle and here serve sup a debut EP for Of Paradise. He pushes his art further than ever before with a masterclass in atmospheric club chemistry that comes laden with dark, post apocalyptic vibes and plenty of alluring rhythms. 'Circuit Breaker' is a bumpy opener, 'Daggers' is a loose, flailing broken beat workout and then 'Misanthrope' and 'Micro Dose' offer further deep space bass explorations.

Deja Vu (5:51)
Future Retro (4:45)
Static (7:57)
Sky Blue (5:24)
Review: Pugilist is an incredible hard to define endpin down producer who has many different tricks up his sleeves and sounds in his socks. He has landed on labels like 3024, Repertoire and Awkwardly Social in the last couple of years and now it is the step cool Banoffee Pies crew who tap him up for another vastly varied EP. 'Deja Vu' is a floaty beat workout with nice serene synths that take you on a trip through the cosmos, while 'Future Retro' has more manic drum programming steeped in jungle tradition with some lush harmonies up top. 'Static' slows down to a more dubbed out swagger and 'Silky Blue' closes with some K&D style downtempo, post-comedown bliss.

Ayahuasca (5:07)
Kindred (dub) (4:09)
Review: Pugilist returns with two more slabs of black magic. 'Ayahuasca' takes us on a trip to see the shaman. Unhurried and machine-like in its plough-like nature, as the mid-point hits we hear the hypnotic sounds of the chimes that gradually takeover the trip with more and more intensity. 'Kindred' on the B, meanwhile, rolls with much more of a deep garage, bubbly dub feel. As always with Pugilist, both hit hard. Limited to 300 copies.

Pugilist & Tamen - "Guidance" (4:49)
Review: One of the joys of Pugilist's productions is that you never quite know what you're going to get, though there's a fair chance it will boast extraordinary amounts of sub-bass. It's this inventive and off-kilter approach to bass music that makes many of his releases essential. We'd put this first outing for Martyn's 3024 label in that category. A-side "Blue Planet" is particularly potent, with the Melbourne-based producer wrapping tribal style hand percussion, tweaked acid lines and occasionally creepy chords around a bombastic bassline and a funk-fuelled, trickily tweaked two-step rhythm. TB-303 acid lines are also a headline-grabbing feature of the similarly weighty and loose-limbed "Acid Flange", while Tamen hook-up "Guidance" is a surprisingly spacey tribute to the early days of UK jungle culture.

Track 3 (10:01)
Review: Having ended 2019 with must-check releases on Whities and Modern Hypnosis (the latter in cahoots with long-standing collaborator Mystik), Pugilist comes out swinging on his first outing of 2020, a Nous Klaer label debut that offers up three high grade workouts. While hypnotic opener "Horizon" is a fine chunk of warm, dubby, spaced-out broken techno, it's the sub-heavy intensity of the track that follows, "Shimmer", that hits home harder. Featuring throbbing, mind-altering bass tones, mutant electronics, ghostly tones and a tough, infectious rhythm, it's amongst his boldest and most mind-altering tracks to date. If that's not enough to set your heart racing, closing cut "Untitled" is a metallic, otherworldly techno beast.

Syncopate (5:30)
Review: Returning to Melbourne based Modern Hypnosis is local DJ Adam Dickson aka Pugilist with some frantic and hyper aware bass assaults - Aussie style! This follows up some terrific releases in recent times on Navy Cuts, Artikal Music and Green King Cuts. On the A side, we have the entrancing polyrhythmic workout of "Cha" which is geared for some deep meditation on the dancefloor, guaranteed. On the flip is the modern jungle deconstruction of "Syncopate" which builds the tension and suspense with its intricate riddims and rolling bassline.

Outback (5:42)
Solaris (5:41)
Review: Following last year's "Raindance" EP, ex-Perverse man Pugilist returns with three more vital dubstep constructs. "Saturn" runs rings around the dance with its 'come in' vocal loop and machine flexed drums while "Outback" deep throats a 23rd century didgeridoo with impeccable bounce attitude. Finally "Solaris" closes the show with the highlight of the EP; a two-steppy space shuffler with a rolling break that's so overwhelmingly insistent it's physical. Benchmark business.

Simian (6:51)
Review: With strong stripes from hosting some of Melbourne's most on-point system parties, Modern Hypnosis level up to label territory with this powerful double-A from New Zealand's Pugilist. "Dream State" sits somewhere between UKG, deep house and dub with its breezy pads, rolling 140 momentum, swinging step and purring subs while the 125-style "Simian" is an 81-esque fusion of minimal, tribal breakbeats, groaning depth plunges and far-away alien textures. It's been a strong year for Pugilist post-Perverse, the honour of launching this exciting new label is yet another impressive reminder why.

Review: Previously known as half of Perverse, Alex Dickson makes his full debut as solo artist Pugilist on the deep bass mothership Artikal. It's fire from the off as "Raindance" brings more than just a shower as a waspish bass conjures thunder before the cloudy keys come in. Dig deeper for the sludgy warped spacefunk of "Terraform", the dubby echoes and cavernous space of "Mumur" and the Skeptical-style two-step tease of "Septic". Serious moves.

Henry Greenleaf - "Stopper Knot" (4:12)
Ebb - "GTAM" (5:17)
Review: Melbourne's Pugilist opens the proceedings on Modern Hypnosis's third various artists EP. It is the sort of hi fidelity and rhythmic precise techno that you might find on labels like Livity Sound. 'Flip Trix' is couched in plenty of warming dub undercurrents with upright drums and funky percussive patterns. Henry Greenleaf then goes into overdrive with his double time and mind-melting drum programming on the frenzied 'Stopper Knot' and Ebb shuts down with the broken rhythms and raved up synth fizz of 'GTAM' to make for an adventurous EP indeed.

Misty In Roots (5:36)
Review: In the words of Mystik himself... This has been a long time coming. The shimmering chords and heavy rolls of "Misty In Roots" were written between the two antipodean modern day dub dons years ago but it's remained on dub until now. It's back by two more heavy system testers; "Sabu" takes a deep breath before coiling up with percussion then springing into action when the kicks skip in. "2 Steps Backwards" takes more of a trad dub stance with swaggering spaced out beats and a delicious array of old school FX work in the mix. Misty in roots; clear in message.

Pugilist & Mystik - "Zulu Blues" (5:41)
Pugilist - "True King" (6:34)
Pugilist - "Conduit" (7:18)
Review: Last spotted exploring the halftime swamps, ex-Perverse member Pugilist makes his debut on J.Sparrow's smoking Navy Cut imprint. Once again he paints three distinct and diverse pictures. "Zulu Blues" (with Mystik) builds up from the roots as a heavy dub groove with precision space and weight while "True King" takes us much deeper into the chamber with a soft kick and heavier emphasis on the atmospheres. We conclude on the slippery technoid funk of "Conduit" that could easily take up residence in Detroit. Stunning.

Otik - "Apollon" (4:34)
Commix - "New Moves" (6:43)
Appleblim - "Hydrothermal Vents" (6:02)
Review: Many happy returns to DEXT Recordings, a thoroughly modern British techno label (IE their inspirations come from UK bass as well as the world of techno) that has now notched up five years in the game. To celebrate, they're releasing a number of sampler singles under the "Elevate" banner, each including hard-to-pigeonhole tracks from their extended artistic family. Volume one begins with a deliciously crunchy, loose-limbed broken techno extravaganza courtesy of Pugilist ("Eclipse"), before Otik peppers a post-dubstep beat with sparkling electronics and glassy-eyed melodies. Commix weighs in with the bustling breakbeat techno haziness of "New Moves", while Appleblim delivers a dubbed-out chunk of sunrise-ready bass science that's almost impossible to pigeonhole.

Review: Melbourne's Pugilist, known for the compelling 'Negative Space' EP, teams up with fellow Australian artist Pod for Iridescent, their debut collaboration on Of Paradise. Across nine meticulously crafted tracks, the duo embarks on an exploration of contemporary dance music. This isn't just a collection of tunes; it's a shifting soundscape, rich with textures and unpredictable in form. From cavernous dub basslines to ethereal atmospheres, Pugilist and Pod deliver a dynamic, genre-blurring journey. 'Haus' and 'Myriapoda' stand out, blending deep rhythms with intricate melodic detail, while moments of ambient serenity wash over, creating a truly immersive, genre-transcendent listening experience.

Pugilist - "Reflections" (8:50)
Pugilist & Sub Basics - "Untitled" (5:40)
Pugilist - "Ruins" (6:18)
Review: Temple Of Sound is the latest label out of the buzzing Bristol scene you need on your radar. The third EP is a tasteful split from Pugilist and Sun Basics - opener "Reflections" is a brilliantly watery, edgeless and dubby techno offering with rippling synths, bass and pads all disappearing to an infinite horizon. The two artists then come together for "Untitled", a mysterious and spacious dub that glides on slippery drum programming and gloopy bass. Lastly, "Ruins" has a mysterious Aztec vibe that rolls you deep into a steamy, humid jungle and rounds out a fresh EP indeed.

Review: Hardcore drum & bass flavours lent an ethereal, darkside sonic twist. Welcomed to the Samuari Music shogunate for the first time ever - despite a longtime, shared presence on the scene - Pugilist, Tamen and Onyx make for a thoracic, thudding collab. Suspensory pads lock us in vial-pods of stasis on the opening 'Conquer', on which our somatic reserves end up totally vampirised by precision shellage. Scapular breaks break our kneecaps on 'ESS', which comes squared off by tweezed hats, while 'Resu' and 'Mise' go on to bloodlet a jungular jugular, with the final track meliorating the soul with its tuned 808s, sculpted distortion and pulsate, futuro-spa ambiances.

Review: The latest d&b sermon on Rupture is a collaboration from two devoted practitioners of the craft - Pugilist and Tamen. Holding it down for Western Australia's scene, they've linked up for a number of releases in recent times, turning heads with their drop on Dext which no doubt helped fan the flames for this knockout EP. There's expertly woven tension on mid-pressure 'Anda' and pin-prick threads of percussion punctuating 'Extract', while the textural sound design is just as subtle and refined. This is subtle but incredibly effective d&b of the highest order, as if you'd expect any less from a new release on Rupture.

Review: UK label Repertoire tap up Pugilist and Tamen for a four track collaborative EP that packs a real punch. The tunes are all expertly designed with deep, intricate drum programming and plenty of darken heavy bass that operates in a murky underworld. 'Samadhi' opens with a haunting, moody vibe that keeps you looking over your shoulder and that feeling doesn't let up on the paranoid minimalism of 'Time Becomes A Loop.' 'Casca' is a more intense flurry of flailing drums and sweeping synths that bring some melodic edge, and 'Finis' traps you in a world of echo, busted loops and suspense.

LUXE - "Flex" (4:36)
Hassan Abou Alam - "Cluttered" (4:42)
Review: The 9th EP from not for profit label Needs is a historic one which embraces the future of vinyl production by partnering with Green Vinyl Records in Holland. Together, they have produced a 100% recyclable record which, we're told, uses 60% less energy costs when compared with traditional vinyl production methods. Musically it bangs, too. Saoirse kicks off with a chunky techno cut with dazzling melodies and Pugilist fires up an electro spaceship and heads off to the future with 'Gluttony.' Reptant is in more rueful mood on 'The Last Laugh' and there are still three more cuts on the flip with the highlight being the percolating beats of 'Flex.'

This new and heavily limited 12" features four cuts from it. 'Internet Explorer' is a silky deep techno workout with lithe rhythms and watery dub undercurrents, while 'Configuration' has heavier drums and eerie synth wisps that bring cosmic ambience to the fore. 'Firewall' then rides on tumbling broken kick patterns that keep you moving and 'Integer' (feat Pugilist) is all about the oscillating low ends and moody pads.
