Freedom Sessions #4
Cat: FREES 04. Rel: 17 Jul 14

Disco/Nu-Disco
Buzz Compass - "Take Me"
Riccio - "We Have Been Waiting"
Funkyjaws - "Picnic"
Petr Serkin - "Spinning Time"
Review: Vinyl-only, 250 copies, no repress... Freedom Sessions certainly know us how to get excited. They've got the vibes to back up their air of exclusivity, too. Each of these four cuts are well-polished deep house cuts the shimmer and shake with the perfect balance of jazz, soul and disco. Native content for the Russian label comes from Buzz Compass (bubbling bass, dreamy chord swoops and a killer loop) and Petr Serkin (filtered bliss that builds and builds). Flying further afield, Italian Riccio dusts off his meanest slap bass while Belarus's Funkyjaws lays down an ultimately timeless lesson in jazz-licked filtered dynamism. Limited and lush... All boxes ticked here.

Disco/Nu-Disco
Eddie C - "Do You Wanna Dance" (6:48)
Elado - "25.4 Millimeters" (5:21)
Scruscru & S Timoshenko - "Ace! ID?" (5:21)
Funkyjaws - "In Your Ear With It" (5:53)
Review: The FunkyJaws Music label invites us deep into their world for a third time here with another delicious 12".It's a various artists EP that features one of our top disco favourites - Eddie C. He opens up with 'Do You Wanna Dance' which has vocals pacing about the mix and old school acid bass twangs under raw house drums. Elado's '25.4 Millimeters' is a Middle Eastern funk workout with spangled drum hits and the flip side brings twisted acid disco and the cosmic trip that is 'In Your Ear With It' from Funkyjaws themselves.

Good For Dance (140 gram vinyl 12")

Disco/Nu-Disco
Scruscru & Aman Po-Kaifu - "Acid Salam" (5:36)
Skitcut - "Zaletaet Na Acid" (5:17)
Funkyjaws - "Acid Circus" (6:22)
Eddie C - "Dysk Dzokej On Acid" (3:54)
Review: Craft Music's taste in sizzling hot party music is absolutely confirmed as razor sharp with this third instalment of edits and re-rubs with a twist. Far from vanilla re-arrangements, these re-versions get fruity with the source material and on Good For Dance there's a particular emphasis on acid. First up Scruscru & Aman Po-Kaifu get right down and dirty with Nigerian classic 'Salem' by The Funkees, whipping up a veritable storm with 'Acid Salam'. Next up Skitcut gets into a serious stomp laden with wriggling 303 action on 'Zaletaet Na Acid', and Funkyjaws has some fun weaving slamming claps and nimble bleeps into the brassy source material for 'Acid Circus'. Eddie C rounds things off with a proper rubbery acid tweaker which slips in smooth on 'Dysk Dzokej On Acid'. Classy stuff, and whole heaps of fun for those who love acid, those who love disco, and those who love both.

His Name Is Eddie
Love Train
From Us
Review: The vinyl only Kolour Ltd operation dip their toes in the rich pool of house music talent currently bubbling away in Russia, welcoming Grodno based pair Four Walls & Funkyjaws into the fold on their first 12" of 2014. Four tracks deep, One Night In Grodno demonstrates this pair have a firm and diverse production grasp of what's classified as underground deep house. Check the mad sax solo that breaks free on opening cut "Jazzy Things" Listen on "His Name Is Fast Eddie" reveals Four Walls and Funkyjaws find it difficult not to let their musical side take hold, though the understated diva flex of "Love Train" might be the best cut here.

Four Walls & Funkyjaws - "Bring Me To Space"
Four Walls & Funkyjaws - "Bring Me To Space" (Saine remix)
Saine - "Daze"
Saine - "Daze" (Four Walls & Funkyjaws remix)
Review: Shadeleaf Music boss Thatmanmonkz has decided to do a little musical matchmaking on this release. It features original material from both Belarusian duo Four Walls & Funkyjaws, and Helsinki-based Saine, with each act also remixing the other's track. Four Walls and Funkyjaws' "Bring Me To Space" lives up to its name, lacing boogie-influenced synth melodies atop intergalactic chords and a loose and jazzy deep house groove. Saine opts for a more hypnotic, locked-in vibe on his sumptuous remix of the same track. He gets a little more expansive on his own "Saine Daze" - whilst retaining the slightly blazed feel associated with his productions - before the Eastern European pair weigh in with a slightly jauntier revision that wisely makes great use of Saine's sensual synths and soul-flecked chords.

Tanga (6:23)
Goomh (6:32)
Review: Belarus' Funkyjaws has done plenty of good things in the past on Craft Music, Shadeleaf Music and Kolour LTD, but now the disco-fied don is striking out on his own with a self-titled label which shows exactly what kind of jams he wants to put out. 'Tanga' is an epic beast which ranges from warm electro-disco to Latin piano chops, wriggling acid lines and onwards, keeping the mood upbeat and party-ready at all times. 'Goomh' has a slinkier feel, riding the smoothest of disco grooves and letting the Rhodes melt like butter dripping off a hot knife. It's as classy as you would expect from someone well versed in tasteful edit-rooted material.

Ole Ole (6:00)
Heavy Salsa Pushka Bassline (5:45)
Untitled I (5:59)
Untitled II (4:30)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Funkyjaws is the Belarusian DJ and producer Sergey Abramov, who you might have previously spotted on Kolour LTD and Shadeleaf Music, often alongside Four Walls. Now a new start up label from St Petersburg has called on Abramov to inaugurate their imprint with his incredibly funky touch, leading in with the sweaty Afrobeat thump of "Ole Ole" and following up in fine style with the sprightly "Heavy Salsa Pushka Bassline", where salsa rips, rudeboy breaks and disco strut gleefully bounce off each other. "Untitled I" and "Untitled II" continue the West African trip with another two brilliant edit workouts with plenty of oomph where it counts.

Them & Us (5:55)
Peasant Dance (5:52)
Review: Detroit/Houston based Kolour have had some pretty credible names feature on their new 10 inch series this year, such as Eddic C, Napoleon, Frank Booker and Lady Blacktronika. Now it is over to the Belarus based disco DJ Funkyjaws who serves up two irresistible jams on Vol 8 of the series. On the A side, we have the soulful and life affirming African boogie of "Them & Us". We have not heard the original but it sounds pretty seamless to us: a respectful edit indeed. On the flip, we have one seriously mad boogie-down jam in the form of "Peasant Dance" which is a truly exotic affair from god knows where! Accordions, wah-wah guitar and some super string arrangements clash wonderfully. This may sound like an unholy mixture but this is exactly the kind of disco deviance that truly floats our boat! The Grodno based producer last appeared for the label on Kolour LTD 22 a couple of years back, and in the meantime has also appeared for the likes of Shadeleaf Music and Austrian imprint Pusic.

Feel This Way (7:14)
Party Train (5:50)
Acid Indie Club (6:16)
Sundown (5:59)
Review: Its feelgood, summertime disco house on the Feel This Way EP, by Belarusian DJ and producer from Grodno and reminiscent of DJ Sneak or Nick Holder's disco cut ups from the mid-nineties. There's some sure fire goodness for sunny day parties on the A side: From the hands in the air vibe of the title track, to the soulful funk groove of "Party Train". On the flip, things get a bit techier on "Acid Indie Club" which much like the name suggests has a warped synth lead that soon gives way to some wicked, big band disco style brass sounds. They leave the best 'til last on "Sundown" though, which you could imagine being played at exactly that time at one awesome beach party to remember.

Junktion - "Sidewalk Salsa" (5:52)
Funkyjaws - "World Spin" (5:53)
Martin Hayes - "Eternia" (5:32)
Vinyladdicted - "Felt So Good" (6:28)
Review: Having previously established the Diggin Disco Deep formula - think sumptuous, sun-kissed deep house revisions of old disco and Balearic cuts - with a trio of 12" singles, the crew gathers for a fourth vinyl missive. Junktion gets the party started, layering eyes-closed electric piano lines and glistening guitars atop a suitably hazy deep house groove, before Funkyjaws moves further towards filter disco-house territory on the jazz guitar-clad shuffler "World Spin". On the reverse, you'll find some bumpin', locked-in loop funk from Martin Hayes (the DJ tool style "Eternia"), and the swinging, Balearic trance influenced positivity of Vinyladdicted's "Felt So Good".

Woodcut - "The Projects" (Hulk Hodn aka Hodini remix) (5:32)
Funkyjaws - "Burr" (8:19)
Review: Austria's Pusic Records have been quietly pushing their sound for the last two years thanks to a variety of their local talent. For this latest instalment, number six in the series, we have MK5 who lays down a laid-back electro-leaning jam on "Phase Em Out", Snacks and the piano-led house jerker that is "Between You & Me", Woodcut's booming and head-strong "The Project" - which is followed by a more glitch and minimal remix from Hodini - and the more disco-friendly "Burr" by Funkyjaws. Quite the package over here!

Simple Symmetry - "Lego" (edit)
The Papers - "Tari Kalianji"
Boogie Nite - "TJ The Funky Mama Theme"
Funkyjaws - "Star Struck"
Review: Glenview continue to push the nu-disco envelop as far as possible with this mesmerising selection. The first two tracks look east for inspiration: Simple Symmetry follow up their beautiful "Incredible Adventures In Khazar Khaganate" with another Bollywood blockbuster "Lego" while The Papers add more of a subtle cosmic influence to the Indian funk ingredients. Elsewhere we find Boogie Nite laying the jack-smack down with the party-primed "TJ The Funky Mama Theme" while Funkyjaws concludes this extensive collection with a lavish, full vocal disco number. Spotless.

Unknown Artist - "This Kind Of Latin Rhythm"
Thierry Tomas - "Samba" (Courtesy Of Jump Recordings)
Funkyjaws - "Tanga" (short version)
Scruscru - "Juicy Brass"
Frank Virgilio - "Portrait Of You"
Review: Scruinversal is back for another vinyl outing and this one takes the form of a reissue of some of the label head's favourite tunes. An unknown artist is behind the sunny shuffle and big horns of 'This Kind Of Latin Rhythm' while Thierry Tomas's 'Samba' is a shuffling house cut laden with glorious piano work. Funkyjaws then offers up his take on tango, Scruscru layers up the rhythms and percussion on 'Juicy Brass' and Frank Virgilio's 'Portrait Of You' shuts down with a deeper late-night feel. These are some superbly effective Latina house jams to drop on the hottest of days and balmiest of nights.
