Review: Warp return for Lisbon for their third and final Cargaa session and things are as hot, heavy and uncompromising as they were when they last took a trip there earlier this year. Melting down Afrobeat, cumbia, tech, hip-hop, house and bare-boned tribal funk, no other scene is making sounds like the Lisbon confederates are right now. Highlights include Babaz Fox's mangled time signature and tripped out bass plunges on "Decicado Ao Dadifox", the unrelenting ghetto-tech slaps of Nervoso's "Buzizz" and K30's deeper, Kerri Chandler-style percussive house gospel "Familia Do Guetto".

Minimal/Tech House
Review: Previous remixes in the Nightmares on Wax 25th anniversary series - from the likes of Special Request and JD Twitch - have been fairly reverential, sticking to the sweaty spirit and sub-bothering bleep techno feel of the original material. Here, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer take the opposite approach, turning in radical revisions that recast "Aftermath" as a minimal techno after-party anthem. There's very little of the original present, though what is used - most notably the vocal, cut-up and reversed, plus a few notes here and there - is brilliantly woven into the fabric of their wonky, 18-minute Dub. Adventurous DJs should check the thrillingly odd Electric Jazz Version, which re-animates the track as a quirky tech-jazz wig-out of epic proportions.

Review: 'African Pirates' is the final slab to complete the trilogy of limited edition singles taken from Nightmares On Wax's (NOW) critically acclaimed album released earlier this year. Troubleman aka Mark Pritchard, producer and respected vanguard of the electronic scene, has turned 'African Pirates' into a 9 minute mix of sweltering Afro-beat rhythms, lush retro organs, electric horns & jazz melodies. JD73, a new producer, signed to NOW's 'Wax On' label, restyles the track with a classic down tempo flavour, nodding in the direction of NOW himself, an erstwhile hero at the dawn of the Balearic scene. The heavy NOW Sound System has become a favourite at festivals throughout this long hazy summer, providing uplifting, chilled out vibes with DJs, dub-plates & impromptu appearances from the talented vocalists that appear on the album.

Review: Leeds legend Nightmares on Wax has had several superb chapters to his musical career, starting with his earliest bleep techno sounds on Warp, through his laid back, sample heavy stoner long players and on to his most recent sonic collages that draw on dub, soul, funk and more. Now he is back with his Club E.A.S.E series that is all about club music in something of an echo of his earliest days. The first 12" features tunes that, he says, "express the early 90s MPC SP12 drum machine sample based sounds that I love so much!" They come with deep house kick with a hip-hop twist and show a superb other side to Wax's sound.

Review: As exciting the news about Warp's signature of Nozinja was, the now-standard drip feed campaign that's accompanied it will most likely have vexed those out there that just want to buy some wax man! So the label's exact plans with the Shangaan Electro artist may still be under wraps, but Warp have offered a glimpse into the future with this sublime 12". Fans of the Honest Jon's compilation Shangaan Electro won't really need any additional persuasion but if you are not familiar with the hi tempo brand of lo-fi South African dance music Tsekeleke offers a perfect introduction to the sound. Our tip is the haywire vocal mix on the flip. More please Warp!

A quarter of a century later, Evelyn is still going strong, though the grooves have mellowed a lot in that time. Here, Warp celebrate the producer's epic career with a much-deserved retrospective. All the familiar favourites are present, from the rush-inducing thrill of early dancefloor smashers "I'm For Real" and "Aftermath", to the sinewy downtempo goodness of the decidedly Balearic "Les Nuits", the blazed hip-hop dub of "195 Llbs" and stoner soul of "70s 80s".

Review: Over the years, George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn has made some very good downtempo music as Nightmares on Wax, as well as some killer club cuts. Even so, he's previously made little quite as musically refined as Shout Out To Freedom. Made in cahoots a giant cast-list of guest performers, the album's 15 tracks rarely surprise - we know by now that Evelyn will blend elements of soul, hip-hop, jazz, reggae and smooth grooves - but are still capable of genuinely taking your breath away. Basically, Evelyn is doing what he does best, only better than ever, with more extensive use of live instrumentation and some genuinely stirring orchestration. Highlights include the Balearic ambient jazz brilliance of 'Wonder', the low-slung, flash-friend soul shuffle of 'Own Me' and the sunrise-ready bliss of 'Imagineering'.
