Review: The new batch from the bottomless edit archives of Danny Krivit is an uptempo, guitar-heavy excursion into two cuts of danceable rock from opposite sides of a decade. The sound is crisply remastered for club play, and stretched over the breadth of a 12-inch single. Both of these tracks are appearing on the long-format player for the first time.

Review: "This 10" single reissue comes in celebration of the upcoming 30th anniversary of Ozzy Osbourne's 'No More Tears'. A new mashup sure to inspire only the best moshpitting and hair-flicking skills from every true hard rock head, this new track hears a the original Ozzy song mashed up with Motorhread's version. Never before released, it sounds like an alternate Dante eagerly cruising through the many layers of hell, as new drum reversings, stereo effects and soundscapes are peppered into this masterful musical jigsaw. The B-side also contains the two original, unremixed versions.

Review: Demon Music present a career-spanning collection of 25 of Kirsty MacColl's most popular recordings on a 2xLP set. Between her June 1979 debut single 'They Don't Know' and her tragic death in 2000, Kirsty released five studio albums and seventeen singles, a succinct but consistently high quality body of work, much of it self-written or in partnership with notable collaborators like Graham Gouldman or Johnny Marr. Whether exploring themes of love and loss, or applying her original and often witty worldview, Kirsty's talent as a songwriter and singer is instantly apparent on this new compilation. She was equally adept at throwing new light on old favourites - look no further than her (some might say better than the original) covers of The Kinks' 'Days', and Billy Bragg's 'A New England', both included here.

Review: American musician Machine Gun Kelly made quite the about turn on his fifth studio album, released in September of 2020. In a grand depart from his usual style, he ditched his rap sound in favour of a guitar-driven pop punk style that is primed for emo teenagers. Famous for his motor mouth flow, Kelly switches it up for big anthemic verses. Most of the songs clock in under three minutes, come with simple but effective three-chord melodies, huge hooks and tender breakdowns that sound like late but natural air to Blink-182.

Review: Mad Season's singular studio effort weaves between raw grunge and introspective melancholy, a haunting exploration of the 90s alt-rock sound. Anchored by the emotive vocals of Layne Staley and the blistering guitar work of Mike McCready, the record captures a mood of somber reflection and hard-hitting release. Tracks like 'River of Deceit' pulse with dark, brooding energy, its aching delivery underscored by a gritty groove, while 'I Don't Know Anything' shifts between quiet introspection and explosive moments of intensity, embodying the turmoil of self-doubt. With Mark Lanegan's gravelly vocals adding an extra layer of depth, the album merges pained ballads with cathartic rock, evoking a sense of both isolation and raw emotion. Across the tracklist, the combination of delicate and forceful moments paints a portrait of a band fully immersed in their emotional landscape.

Review: Moving away from their two-tone tingles and sauntering silliness, 'The Madness' was a thorough rebrand for the band - exploring a new name, a new sound, a rejumbled lineup, and all the new electronic music tech that te late 80s had to offer. Sounding more like Duran Duran than Madness as we know them, 'The Madness' hears a smattering of guest musicians join the party, including The Specials' Jerry Dammers on piano. It was this LP that caused such a furore at the band's Madstock festival in 1992, that a small earthquake erupted at 4.2 on the Richter scale in the London locale of Finsbury Park. Now you can relive said tremors of excitement with this reissue.

Review: Norio Maeda's Rock Communication Yagibushi, originally released in Japan in 1970, now comes reissued on Wewantsounds. Rock Communication Yagibushi has since become a Japanese jazz-funk cornerstone, owing to its incredible, complex mutative movement of 14 traditional Japanese folk songs into jaw-dropping jazz-funk versions. Maeda's killer arrangements fit perfectly somewhere on the stylistic intersection of David Axelrod and Lalo Schifrin; the album likewise is increasingly experimental as it progresses, with the big band bombast of the likes of 'Saran Bushi' mixing seamlessly yet also contrastingly with the vibraphonic improv shakedown 'Edo Nihonbashi', our highlight.

Review: A poignant celebration of the veteran prog/metal band's final show with founding guitarist and songwriter Tony Clarkin, recorded in December 2022 at the Wolverhampton venue owned by ex-Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing. This concert, now immortalised in stunning audio and video, represents the culmination of their The Monster Roars tour and serves as Clarkin's last live performance before his unexpected passing in January 2024. This triple album package coincides with the first anniversary of Clarkin's death. Featuring a mix of timeless classics, newer material and fan favorites, it captures Magnum at their very best, offering a bittersweet farewell to the guitarist who shaped their sound for over five decades. Tracks like 'Kingdom Of Madness', the title song from their 1978 debut, shine as fan favorites and staples of the band's storied career. Live At KK's Steel Mill is both a heartfelt tribute to Clarkin and a reminder of Magnum's legacy as melodic hard rock pioneers, ensuring their music continues to live on.

Review: Whitesnake members Adrian Vandenberg, Rudi Sarzo, and Tommy Aldridge came together in 1993 for a one-off album, now re-released on its 30th anniversary. Departing from their arena-rock past, they embraced blues rock influences, reminiscent of Cream and Led Zeppelin. With vocalist Ron Young from Little Caesar, they crafted a raw, spontaneous sound in a two-week studio session. Though overlooked at the time due to shifting musical trends, the album resonates today with its organic feel and nods to classic rock. While lacking mainstream appeal, it boasts standout tracks like 'Give Me a Shot' and 'When the Hammer Comes Down,' alongside introspective ballads. Despite its underappreciated status, the album remains a proud musical moment for Vandenberg, reflecting a time when rock music was evolving. With its timeless appeal, it's regrettable that the band only produced one album together before pursuing other projects.

More than a compilation, this album is a complete document of the Bluesbreakers' recordings with Peter Green, of which 'A Hard Road' was just the most prominent part. Review: "I'm somewhere between a pop artist and a jam band-maybe closer to pop artist," John Mayer recently told Kerwin Frost in a YouTube interview. Given the fact he makes a sideline as the touring guitarist for the Grateful Dead - a band vying for position as most ironically named given the length of their live history - and his latest record sounds like Sob Rock, in both title and sonics, it's not hard to see why he's come up with that kind of career summation.

It is, of course, purposefully reductive and awkwardly self-deprecating, in a self-conscious kind of way. And that attitude certainly rings true on this record, which despite being pretty grand in terms of scope, scarcely a 'small' track on here, always feels slightly withdrawn. Nevertheless, from the stadium balladry of 'All I Want Is To Be With You', through to the Clapton-esque blues of 'I Guess I Just Feel Like', it's Mayer on real form.

Review: Paul McCartney gets a lot of (arguably unwarranted) stick, but the former Beatle has always been open to trying new things and allowing people to reinterpret his work. It's for this reason that he's allowed an interesting mixture of artists to remix his solo lockdown album, McCartney III. After opening with a pleasingly funk-some, low slung Beck hook-up (the excellent 'Find My Way'), we're treated to a mixture of collaborations (the stellar, laidback and psychedelic 'Pretty Boys' with Khruangbin), new cover versions by hand-picked artists (see the contributions by Dominic Fike and Phoebe Bridgers) and largely impressive remixes. In the latter category, we're particularly enjoying Damon Albarn's woozy, downtempo take on 'Long Tailed Winter Bird' and 3D RDN's 'Temporary Secretary'-esque version of 'Deep Deep Feeling'

Review: By 1975, Paul McCartney's Wings had cemented themselves as a global phenomenon with Band on the Run. Rather than replicate that album's formula, Venus and Mars embraces a looser, more exploratory approach, reflecting the band's evolving lineup and musical ambitions. Recorded primarily in New Orleans, the album incorporates rock, ballads and playful genre-hopping, embodying a free-spirited energy that defined mid-70s McCartney. The title track's gentle acoustic opening transitions seamlessly into the bombastic, arena-ready 'Rock Show', setting the stage for Wings' ambitious world tour. 'Listen to What the Man Said' delivers pure melodic bliss, its breezy saxophone flourishes making it one of McCartney's most effortless pop triumphs. Meanwhile, 'Letting Go' stands out with its bluesy, soulful atmosphere, contrasting the vaudevillian charm of 'You Gave Me the Answer'. New guitarist Jimmy McCulloch steps into the spotlight with 'Medicine Jar', a riff-driven rocker that, alongside 'Spirits of Ancient Egypt', adds grit to score. The album's whimsy shines through 'Magneto and Titanium Man', inspired by comic book lore, while 'Call Me Back Again' sees McCartney delivering one of his rawest, most impassioned vocal performances. The cinematic instrumental 'Crossroads' closes the album on an unexpected yet fitting note. An album that saw Wings at their most eclectic, harnessing both their playful charm and growing ambition while making it an essential piece of McCartney's post-Beatles journey. 50 years since it first was released, this reissue sounds better than ever.

Review: Paul McCartney & Wings' live performance captures the energy and charisma of a band at the peak of their powers. Opening with 'Venus and Mars', the crowd's excitement is palpable, setting the tone for a high-octane set. As the performance unfolds, McCartney's effortless musicianship is showcased across tracks like 'Live and Let Die,' where the band delivers a powerful, theatrical rendition that brings new life to the well-known hit. The performance also shines on 'Maybe I'm Amazed,' with McCartney's emotive vocals cutting through the atmosphere. It's a dynamic and engaging live show that confirms the enduring appeal of McCartney's legacy.

The artists chosen to remix were all selected by McCartney himself and are said to feature "friends, fans, and brand new acquaintances." The record has picked up plenty of positive reviews already and that should be no surprise given the heavyweights included. The likes of Beck, Khruangbin, Dev Hynes, Ed O'Brien, Damon Albarn, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak, Robert Del Naja, and Idris Elba all make for a contemporary mix with diverse results.

Review: Paul McCartney's long-lost project, One Hand Clapping, is finally seeing a near-complete release 50 years after its inception. Filmed and recorded over four days in August 1974 at Abbey Road Studios, the sessions feature a new Wings lineup with Paul, Linda, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch, and drummer Geoff Britton, alongside Del Newman and Howie Casey. The album includes recent hits like 'Live and Let Die,' 'Band on the Run,' and 'Jet,' alongside Beatles classics 'Let It Be,' 'The Long and Winding Road,' and 'Lady Madonna.' Denny Laine covers the Moody Blues' 'Go Now' and Paul revisits 'Maybe I'm Amazed' and the Tin Pan Alley classic 'Baby Face.' Previously unreleased, except for a few tracks scattered over the years, One Hand Clapping is now available as beautiful packages with exclusive solo performances recorded in the backyard of Abbey Road. This release is a nostalgic treat for McCartney and Wings fans that harnesses the band at a unique moment in their storied career.

First released in 1971 and produced by the legendary Sandy Roberton, Stargazer has earned a devoted following for its blend of folk, psychedelia, and adventurous production, which spruce up McDonald's exquisite songwriting and puce, haunting vocals. Fans of Pentangle, Incredible String Band, and Joni Mitchell will find much to love, as will admirers of David Crosby's 'If Only I Could Remember My Name' and Gene Clark's 'No Other'. A long-overdue reissue, this one also marks the debut for Different Strokes For Different Folks, a new label dedicated to unearthing rare and cult classics, with more set for 2025.

Also included are the waltzing 'Since I Don't Have You', the cinematic megaproduction 'Crying', the tearjerking utopian linedance 'Jerusalem', and the film-referencing, spoken word, walking-basser 'It's A Beautiful Life'.

Utilising melodious leads, powerful vocals and technically impressive flashes of prog brilliance, their fourth full-length Showdown offers up a form of triumphant positivity and anthemic fantasy, harking back to the classic era of illustrious prog and classic rock with subtle nods to the likes of Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Kansas. It might not be 1978 anymore, just don't tell the band that.

Review: When Mick Mars stepped back from touring with Motley Crue, it seemed like the end of an era. Really, it was the beginning of a new one. The legendary guitarist, whose riffs, solos and overall devastatingly heavy sound powered the L.A. icons through four decades of world-conquering, multi-platinum sonic mayhem is, as he demonstrates on his debut solo effort, still a serious force to be reckoned with. Only now, listeners are reckoning with more Mars than ever before. On the aptly-titled The Other Side of Mars, fans get that vision in its full, multifarious glory. To be sure, there are plenty of characteristically riff-tastic, tough-as-nails hard-rock anthems, but The Other Side of Mars also shows the 71-year-old guitarist heading into new and uncharted territory, tearing through caustic, modern metal ('Broken On The Inside"', conjuring gothic-tinged soundscapes ('Undone'), digging into anguished, slow-burning power balladry ('Killing Breed"' and unspooling bluesy, cinematic instrumental workouts (the album-closing guitar showcase, 'L.A. Noir'). The music throughout the ten-track collection, meanwhile, is otherwise studded with slide guitars, violins, violas, keyboards, glitchy freak-outs and all manner of sonic surprises.

Review: The turn of 1980 saw limited quantities of Salty Miller's lone album, a hidden gem of the beach music scene of the Carolinas, after which the properly named Beach Music Records names itself (they monopolised the scene early on). Miller's album blends soul, disco, and mid-tempo steppers, perfect accompaniments for the shag, beach music's signature dance. Though an 80s classic in its own right, Album 1 was made after Miller took extended time away from releasing: his masterwork heard a noble North Carolinian cast, including members of fellow The Embers, then join him on backing duties. Oceanic soundscapes and emotive string arrangements contrast with a local joviality; 'One More Time', 'Music Makes Me High', and 'The Fox' are standouts, though the peak sensation 'Happy Is The Word' has to be our highlight, bringing boardwalk-strutter soul and pitchy electric organs to a well chorused mix.

Review: Every so often Record Store Day really does throw up a doozy and this is one of them. Hejira Demos is a highly anticipated vinyl release directly from the Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 4 box set. Pressed on 180g black vinyl, this collection features the iconic folk singer's solo demos from March 1976 so offers a raw, intimate look at the creation of one of her most revered albums. The demos capture her signature style and insightful lyrics in their early, unpolished form. Notably, you can hear the iconic Chaka Khan providing backing vocals on 'Black Crow' which adds another layer of depth to this timeless work.

The 1971 classic album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, Blue is widely thought by many music lovers to be one of the best albums of all time. Already well into her career by the time of its release - it's her fourth album - it was certainly Mitchell's best yet, reflecting a period in her life where she took a break from touring and live performing to focus on creation. Its confessional and poetic lyrics, not to mention the distinctively groggy yet idyllic guitar and piano playing on songs like 'All I Want', 'River', 'A Case Of You', heard Mitchell encapsulate the various milestones, Renaissances and turning points of the contemporary rock landscape of the 1970s, into a singular LP.

Review: The Hissing of Summer Lawns marked a turning point in Joni Mitchell's career, emerging four decades ago as a radical departure from her earlier work. While albums like Blue and Court and Spark established her as a confessional singer-songwriter, Hissing ventured into new territories, blending jazz and African influences with a more complex pop sound. The album's characters, primarily women, grapple with existential disconnection, often revealing a sense of unworthiness and emotional estrangement. Critics initially found the album jarring, noting the absence of first-person narratives and traditional melodies. Instead, Mitchell crafted a lush soundscape reminiscent of Miles Davis's freeform style, allowing her musicians the freedom to shape the music. While Hissing debuted at #4 on the charts, it quickly fell off, perceived as too esoteric for mainstream audiences. Over time, its innovative spirit has influenced a new generation of artists from Prince to Bjork, who resonate with its harmonically rich and experimental nature.

Although the album received mixed reviews, it still manage to achieve great commercial success and eventually reached No. 25 on the Billboard charts as well as earning gold status within three months. New reissued on orange and blue vinyl via Rhino, this double album is notable in the Mitchell catalogue for its experimental style. It builds on the jazz-influenced sound of her earlier work and, as she neared the end of her contract with Asylum Records, saw her embraced a more unconventional approach.

Review: Joni Mitchell's Song To A Seagull was a stunningly poetic debut in 1968. It unveiled her remarkable songwriting and folk sensibilities tp the world and set her in motion to become the towering figure she remains today. The album, produced by David Crosby, features Mitchell's introspective lyrics and intricate guitar work. With ethereal vocals, she crafts vivid narratives exploring love, freedom, and self-discovery. The title track, a gentle ode to nature, sets the tone for the album's contemplative atmosphere. Mitchell's ability to blend intricate melodies with profound lyricism establishes Song To A Seagull as a harbinger of her influential and enduring career, laying the foundation for the ensuing evolution that saw her grow ever more revered in her field

Released in 1970, the record blends folk, pop, and jazz influences while showcasing Mitchell's unique artistry. Iconic tracks like 'Big Yellow Taxi,' 'Woodstock,' and 'The Circle Game' highlight her sharp lyrical wit and melodic inventiveness. From the sincerity of her lyricism to the fathoms-deep feeling in her voice, the fragile beauty of the melodic composition and the tender playing of the guitar and piano, it's quite simply perfect. It's an album which should be in every home, and now it's repressed by Rhino on heavyweight wax in a gatefold sleeve - the definitive way to experience such an important document of 20th century music.

Review: In 1959, Van Morrison made his debut on the stage of Orangefield Secondary School, performing with the skiffle group Midnight Special, featuring John McCullough on tea-chest bass, Cyril Downey and Billy Ruth on guitars, Walter Blakely on washboard, and Van on guitar and vocals. Fast forward to August 2014, Morrison returned to Orangefield for three farewell performances as the school prepared to close its doors forever. These shows were recorded for the album Live at Orangefield, capturing the mood of this significant event. Opened in 1957, Orangefield initially served as a boys' school before merging with the girls' school. It remained an educational and social hub for thousands of students from East Belfast and beyond until its closure in 2014 and subsequent demolition three years later. This double heavyweight black vinyl album not only celebrates Morrison's formative years but also shows his ability to imbue his memories with energy, poetic reinvention, and a sense of timelessness. The album is about a exhilarating, poignant, and romantic musical journey.

Review: Few bands embody pure, unfiltered rock'n'roll like this power trio, whose vicious sound was forged in sweat, speed and sheer volume in the squats of West London and went on to effective bulldoze the line between hard rock and punk overnight. Driven by the unmistakable growl of their frontman and bassistiequal parts outlaw poet and rock deityithe group delivered some of the most incendiary riffs in history, backed by a rhythm section that hit like a runaway freight train. This edition pairs the original 12-track studio recording with an originally televised full-throttle live set from Belfast in 1981, capturing the band at their most primal. From the precision attack of 'Love Me Like a Reptile' and the relentless stomp of '(We Are) The Road Crew' to the sheer force of 'The Chase Is Better Than the Catch', the first half is a masterclass in unhinged rock'n'roll. The second half turns up the intensity even further, featuring live versions of 'Overkill', 'Bomber', and 'No Class'iraw, deafening, and unstoppable. Remastered from the original tapes, this edition is a high-voltage reminder of why they remain one of the loudest, fastest and most influential bands of all time.

Review: Rhythm & Blues follows on from the success of its Mott The Hoople at the BBC 1970 release - well worth a look (or listen) - with another retrospective compilation that makes a convincing case for us all diving headfirst into the band's full back catalogue to marvel at what's there. A collection of broadcast tracks from Top Gear, Sounds of the Seventies, and The John Peel Sunday Concert are included, and all sound gritty, growly, raw and vital. Among the highlights are versions of Like A Rolling Stone and When My Mind's Gone, which the release notes argue are "rare-as-hens-teeth", and we're not in position to argue, while the take on 'What'd I Say' feels soaked in enough spilt whisky and blues you could probably get loaded on the fumes alone. Ultimately, though, there's no point picking individual parts here. Instead, think wall-to-wall reasons why the Hoople were such a rare breed.

Review: "If it hadn't been for Mott, there would be no us," Mick Jones of The Clash once said about Mott the Hoople. Joe Elliott, of Def Leppard, meanwhile, claims these guys to be "the greatest rock 'n' roll band ever, and Queen's Brian May describes their stuff as "raw, fun, angry, glorious and jagged," before summarising their oeuvre simply as "everything". All of which makes the story of their almost-monumental fame so brutally real - a group forever idolised in muso circles, but forgotten in the mainstream conscious. Active as Mott The Hoople from 1969 to around 1980, despite incredible critical reverence and a reputation as one of the live acts to see at the time, studio output failed to really impact. By 1972 they were running out of determination, before David Bowie got involved and wrote 'All The Young Dudes', a glam rock-style classic. A standout on this album, which is packed with amazing tracks waiting for you to fall in love with, for the first or 50th time, we cannot recommend exploring this one enough.

Review: Mr. Big's upcoming album Ten is a poignant tribute to late drummer Pat Torpey, featuring eleven original tracks that showcase the band's enduring talent. With Nick D'Virgilio stepping in on drums, the album is a testament to the band's resilience and musical musicmanship. Produced by Jay Ruston and MR. BIG, Ten promises to be a raw and unadulterated blend of riff rock and blues, infused with Mr. Big's signature style. The first single, 'Good Luck Trying,' is a loud and gritty blues rocker that harks back to the band's earliest influences. Eric Martin describes the album as a departure from their previous work, offering fresh and original material. Paul Gilbert's lyrics convey a sense of resilience in the face of life's challenges, with a touch of humor. Recorded both in the studio and on the tour bus, Ten captures the essence of Mr. Big's dynamic energy and showcases their ability to push musical boundaries. With the band retiring this year in 2024, Ten serves as a fitting farewell to a legendary band.

Review: Yumi Murata's Uterus Uterus is a jazz-pop classic from 1985. Yumi is a vocal coach and former singer who was active from the late 70s and through the 80s before opening her own Murata Yumi Vocal Training Room in 1991 and teaching ever since. This long-player was a later one out of the seven she released in all and is one of her most popular as it mixes up fusion, new wave, funk, pop and jazz across synth sounds. These are enjoyable and sophisticated sounds from this talented vocalist.

Review: It was recently Elon Musk who told us that there's a "one in billions" chance that we're not living in a computer simulation right now, and to popularise that theory even more Warner presents Muse at arguably their biggest. It's the mega-band's follow-up to their 2015 Drones LP and Nostradamus-like themes are once again at play in the subtle neo-anarchist tendencies of Muse's end of the world sound, although this time around electronic, EDM and Tron influences are at the forefront of their production. A distinctly colourful, vibrant and hyperactive listen compared to their last full length, and seemingly light years on from their seminal 2001 album, Origin Of Symmetry, Muse send us streaming into a new void that's as exhilarating and it is terrifying.

Review: Somehow summoning the chutzpah and spirit to go bigger-better-faster-more on each one of their albums thus far, Muse here dish out another feverish, histrionic and mightily compelling collection of widescreen art-rock stompers. With the help of none other than 'Mutt' Lange in the producer's chair, the Teignmouth three-piece make a record with an epic scope and grandstanding aplomb that could put it in the ring with any of the stadium acts he's worked with in times of yore. With an anti-war theme surrounding ditties that loom large in the imagination, 'Drones' is another bold step for this unlikely trio.

Review: The 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender marks the singular collaboration between guitar legends Carlos Santana and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, resulting in a spiritually charged masterpiece. This reissue from Mobile Fidelity unties both of the artist's quest for enlightenment, drawing inspiration from John Coltrane's work and their shared devotion to Indian guru Sri Chinmoy. Sourced from the original analog master tapes, this reissue showcases the album's intricate sonic landscape with remarkable clarity. The dynamic interplay between Santana and McLaughlin, with Santana predominantly on the left and McLaughlin on the right, creates an wonderful live listening experience. The album’s varied tempos and tones, ranging from delicate acoustic passages to powerful bursts of percussion, are brought to life with extraordinary realism. Featuring interpretations of Coltrane classics like 'A Love Supreme' and 'Naima,' as well as original compositions, the album blends jazz, rock, and gospel elements. Larry Young, credited as Khalid Yasin, delivers standout organ accompaniment, adding depth to the improvisational lines and ecstatic chords that define the record. Love Devotion Surrender remains a transcendent journey through sound, driven by two of music’s most visionary artists.
