Jimmy "Bo" Horne - "Hey There Jim" (2:34)
Lynn Williams - "How Can You Call Love Fascination" (2:26)
Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

Sentimental Moments (10:58)
Vida Mia (8:17)
Oh Yeah T'blessed (20:51)
Review: Building on the momentum of their debut album, the legendary musicians and 577 mainstays return with Shine Hear, Vol. 2, a stunning continuation of their avant-garde exploration. Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter, pianist Leo Genovese, bassist William Parkeriwho also contributes on Gralla and Shakuhachiiand drummer and vocalist Francisco Mela, reunite to create another cosmic journey through sound. This second volume maintains the same spirit of improvisational brilliance while pushing the boundaries even further. Drawing from classic jazz structures, the ensemble weaves in modern experimentalism and a broad palette of instruments, resulting in an album that feels both timeless and innovative. The tracks and the album title are inspired by a new poem written by Carter, reflecting the transience and ceaseless motion of modern life, much like the city of New York, where all the musicians are based. This collaboration has unique magic can emerge when these legendary artists come together. Their interplay blends elegant, traditional jazz with daring, avant-garde arrangements. Shine Hear, Vol. 2 stands as a powerful and innovative work, affirming the quartet's ability to continually reinvent themselves while honouring the roots of jazz.

Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:52)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:26)
Review: It might be getting cold and dark and wet here in the UK but music will always be able to transport us to warmer, sunnier, happier climes. And so it is with this new 7", which includes a booklet, from Discodelic. It's a two tracker from Cizana and La Nueva Generation that is flame hot and bristling with energy - Cizana's 'She Sold Her Soul' kicks off with its joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then La Nueva Generacion slow things down and up the brass with their carnivalesque Afro-funk workout 'Uhru Sasa'.

Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:51)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:25)
Review: Discodelic obviously rates this latest 7" of theirs because they have released it in more than one format. As well as a straight back wax version you can also cop it on this pink & blue splattered vinyl complete with a booklet that provides some extra context about the music from Cizana and La Nueva Generation. Both tunes are flame-hot and bristling with energy. The A-side is all joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then the flip slows things down and ups the brass. Two belters and this one looks as good as it sounds, too.

Review: 5 Borough Breaks is back with more of that red hot dancefloor heat in hip-hop form with another couple of gems. The one kick off with Da Youngstas and the second single from their debut album in 1992. 'Pass The Mic' rides on crisp boom bap drums with big horns and some mad speedy mic work. On the flip, as is always with way with this series, is the sample source - namely Lou Donaldson's 'Pot Belly' from his 1970 album Pretty Things. It's a nice smooth jazz number with Rhodes chords warming it through and gently tumbling rhythms from Idris Muhammad on drums.

Deny (feat Irasema Gall - Redux) (3:35)
Review: La La Lopez's debut single, 'You Can Call Me Rose,' marks her impressive entry on SOLA Records, offering a soulful, modern r&b response to Thee Sacred Souls' classic 'Can I Call You Rose.' Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, La La brings her unique blend of influences, from Mariachi and Rancheras to Soul and oldies, creating a sound that transcends borders. Recorded at SOLA Studios in Los Angeles and OLAH Producciones in Veracruz, this record shows her versatility. On Side-1, 'You Can Call Me Rose,' exudes soulful warmth, while the flip side, 'Deny,' is a vibrant Latin Pop track with English lyrics and rich Latin percussion, perfect for the dance floor. La La's music resonates deeply with her life experiences, a quality evident in her past works and future releases with SOLA Records. 'You Can Call Me Rose' has already garnered praise across generational audiences, affirming La La Lopez as a musical force to watch. Now available on 7" vinyl!

Review: Matasuna takes us on our global travels once more, this time to Latin America and Venezuela for this dance floor heater from La Retreta Mayor. It is an original from 1976 that now lands on its own 7" for the first time and is backed by a fresh remix from King Most. Elements of Latin, funk and jazz all inform the fiery a-side which also has some rich horns and red hot drums, bass and pianos adding to the intensity. The flip side version still has an organic vibe like the original but with a new intro and outro that have their own flavour.

It's Not That Easy (3:02)
Review:
Lady Blackbird's critically acclaimed album 'Black Acid Soul' is often thought to be one of the finest of recent times. Good as it is, there was one track that never made the cut that would have made it even stronger, and that is now presented here as part of this year's Record Store Day. 'Did Somebody Make A Fool Outta You' is said to haven't fit with the flow of the long player, which is why it was left off, but it was also a firm favourite of the label owner and A&R, Ross Allen. Here it is backed with the Reuben Bell written joint, 'It's Not That Easy', which shows a nice deep soul side with stripped back production.

Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45 series is never more relevant than in the warmer summer months. The latest transmission from the South American country's golden period is again well mastered and cut nice and loud so that the super addictive vocal o the a-side really lodges deep in your brain. Review: Rindert Lammers' debut LP is a kaleidoscopic suite in five movements; pelican wingspans of twinkly, retentive but then also generous jazztronica, centring on two distinct themes: Japanese cinema and YouTube confessions. Japanese culture is seen through a grateful lens, as theatrical titans such as Kirin Kiki are homaged; the B1 especially is inspired by a poignant moment in the actor's portrayal of Hatsue Shibata in the 2018 film Shoplifters. Seemingly firstly inconsequential digital traces are lent an upscale gravitas, meanwhile, as a voice clip from a YouTube comment on an algorithmically boosted Hiroshi Yoshimura video evolves into the ride-embellished upswell 'Thank You Hiroshi Yoshimura'. Mastering the art of appreciation from afar, Lammers brings a mood of gobsmacked reverence for Japanese enviro jazz and its offshoots, suspending us over an endless realm of forms circa 1989.

Review: Rare Groove Spectrum Vol. 2 on Freestyle back in January was a superbly well received collection of reworks and imaginings of soul classics. Now Lance Ferguson follows it up with a tidy 7" that features his take on 'Mango Meat' as well as his unique Latin soul cover of Gladys Knight's classic 'Got Myself a Good Man.' It's a bustling jazz-funk gem with glorious flutes bursting out of the mix and rollin drum rhythms. 'Mango meat' goes a litter deeper with its more rolling drum work and psyched-out guitars and big horns.

Review: Bett Lou will be well known to soul fans who have dug back through time to learn their stuff. She recorded a classic session in 1979 and this is a seance single taken from it - a cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day', backed with a more stripped down instrumental version of 'I Can't Stop'. The a-side reworks the classicist a funky and mid tempo number with lush chord work and drums that tease and please. The flip is a jazzy rework that keeps it low key and seductive.

Yanki (3:11)
Review: This tasty 7" single brings together two stalwarts of the thriving Finnish jazz scene, namely saxophonist Timo Lassy and drummer Teppo Makynen. It's A-side "Calling James" that hits home hardest, as Lassy adds a snaking, alluring sax solo - all parping blasts and fluid fills - to a bustling, percussively rich Makynen drum track. Despite the fact that there's no other instrumentation, it's a genuinely heavy dancefloor workout. On the flip you'll find the looser and slightly more experimental "Yanki", where Lassy provides some free-jazz style soloing over a distinctively left-of-centre Makynen drum workout.

Review: Dynamite Cuts have pulled out another classic from the Afro-jazz canon here. It's one of the many gems from the catalogue of The Last Poets and was sampled by some big hip-hop artists back in the day including The Jungle Brothers. The original track is some ten minutes long but here it has been edited down to a short and sharp for minutes for an exclusive 7" pressing. Soon as you drop the needle you will be hypnotised by the saxophone and vocals as the energetic groove lifts you up and away.

Review: 1977's Delights of the Garden, which saw The Last Poets accompanied by legendary soul-jazz sticks-man Bernard Purdie, remains one of the proto-rap innovators' greatest albums. The team behind the Dynamite Cuts label clearly agree, because they've decided to stick two of the set's most magical tracks on one must-have 45. On the A-side there's a chance to savour LP highlight 'It's a Trip', where the band sings and speaks over skittish, loose-limbed Purdie breakbeats, fizzing funk guitars and rubbery bass. Turn it over for special (and tastefully executed) 7" edit of 'Blessed Are Those Who Struggle', a classic chunk of politically charged proto-rap featuring killer drum work from the ever-impressive Purdie. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. Review: Freestyle Records' Jessica Lauren (Four) drops her long awaited single as a precursor to her full length self titled album slated for a mid April release. Jessica has been a keyboard player on the London scene since the early 1990s and we remember in particular her unleashing a superb single for Soul Jazz ("Serengetti") back in 93! Since then Jess has supported everyone from Jean Carne, United Future Organisation, Dexter Wansel and even James Mason. She is also a core member of space jazz outfit Emanative and a regular feature of the long running weekly live Jazz Meet Sessions. The A Side kicks off with an enormous keyboard riff before soul legend Jocelyn Brown kicks in with a soul-infused bluesy vocal performance. Lashings of smouldering Hammond organ aid Miss Brown with the gospel-driven "I Believe", which eases us towards the run-out groove and the A-Side. On the flip "White Mountain" ventures into atmospheric and tasteful instrumental jazz territory, with distinctive keys and hypnotic double bass playing from Andrew Kremer.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: You know that long hot days are fast approaching when it is Brazilian music that you crave. Thankfully the Scruniversal has got us covered with a second release that is as scorching as the first. It pairs MPB, samba and Latin flair with hard-edged hip-hop and funk stylings across a pair of tunes from Scruscru, each one a different collaboration. The first is alongside Tony Lavrutz and has gorgeous vocals and organic percussion paired with cut-up beats and jazzy keys that will ignite any floor on 'Rave Du Brazil.' It is Los Protos's jazz funk groover 'Primavera' that gets the good vibes going on the flip.

Family (Birdland Love Theme) (4:52)
All I Do (4:34)
Review: This excellent 7" single dips into the archives of flautist Hubert Laws, offering up two rarities that date from 1981. On side A you'll find a superb live version of Laws' then recent single 'Family', which first featured on the Japanese-only LP Aurex Jazz Festival: Super Fusion Jam. A languid jazz-funk number featuring Laws' younger sister Eloise on vocals and plenty of fluid solos from the man himself, it's argualy a better version than the one originally featured on the 1980 album of the same name. Over on the flip you'll find a previously unissued recording of Hu Eloise and the rest of their top-notch fusion band giving their interpretation of Stevie Wonder's 'All I Do'. It's as fresh, breezy and emotion rich as you'd expect, with Eloise Laws' delivering a brilliant lead vocal.
