Review: Tough asparagus themed drum tracks for the culinary minded vinyl DJs out there on volume 4 of Don't Be Afraid's annual series that celebrates the fact that Record Store Day shares calendar space with the first day of the British Asparagus Season. Those who indulged in last year's inaugural pair of releases will be pleased as asparagus punch that Slazenger's People are once again involved, whilst the cuts from Freeman, Club Paranoia and 48v Spargel Brothers, the three series newcomers, demonstrate that quality control remains as high too. Indeed opening cut "Bitten" from the latter bumps with the kind of sweat inducing authenticity that many a current budding house producer could do well to sit through and take notes.

Review: The third in Prescription's From the Vaults series is perhaps the most crucial to date, delivering a clutch of veritable classics from the label's archives. Proceeding kick off with the timeless Latin house swing of the Mericana remix of A Man Called Adam's "Que Tal America" from all the way back in 96 - check that sax! Alongside it is Chuggles aka UK house don Ralph Lawson's collaborative effort with Chez Damier brings the searing Chicago emotion via the chord heavy bump of "Thankyou". Mr Damier owns the B Side too, in conjunction with fellow house icon Ron Trent with two of their finest works - "The Meaning" in particular is worthy of purchase alone.

Review: Well over two years has passed since the release of Keeping The Legacy, a compilation style EP featuring tracks inspired by "the classic sounds from Chicago, New York and Detroit". This belated follow-up begins with something rather special: a fine Jorge Caiado 'Morning Dub' of lesser known Abacus and Chez Damier hook-up "Closer". While it boasts their usual chunky, groovy bottom-end, the mix also makes great use of a yearning, cyclical electronic melody. Elsewhere, James Duncan delivers the hazy deep house bump of "416 Zone (Dub Mix)", Jacksonville laces dreamy, drifting chords over a killer bassline and heavy percussion on "Twilight Industries", and Satore reaches for the cowbells and Gwen Guthrie vocal samples on the disco-influenced throb of "Keep On".

Review: Mathematics continues their fine run in 2011 with a slice of acid house history from the legendary Adonis. All the way back in 1988, Adonis teamed up with Charles B and dropped "Lack Of Love". It's presented here by Jamal Moss's label in a new "Summer Of Love 88 - Extended Replay" version that retains all the delightful and unpredictably raw rhythms that duck between heavy 303 usage and tub thumping gospel leads. You have to marvel at the chaotic epicness of a track which is over twenty years old and probably produced on the most primitive of hardware. On the flip Mathematics mainstay Steve Poindexter drops an equally demented remix of Adonis' 1989 jacker "Reck The Joint" that double dares you to dance.

Review: Alzaya is a boutique label from Milan that has put out a select few EPs over the last three years from names such as Paula Tape. Now it kicks off a new Various Artist series with five quality tunes. Akasha System's 'Midnight Tide' is a nice neon-lit future tech cut with bubbling, soft focus melodies. Tape Hiss offers the old school piano laced joy of 'Scirocco' and Manuel Darquart slips into deep cosmic house lushness with 'Low Tide.' The mellifluous melodies keep on coming with Cosmic Cherry and Nicodemo who offer a pair of sleek and stylish sounds.

Review: Volume four of the Vanguard Sound series from Anunnaki Cartel label sees Amir Alexander and Chris Mitchell once again open the invitation to the East Coast house innovators. This time it's Plan B pair DJ Spider and Dakini9 who line up alongside the label founders with Amir Alexander setting a rough and rugged tone on opening track "Cypher". Rasping kicks and a killer bouncing analogue bassline drive the track forwards as Alexander gradually weaves in a searing synth tone which increases with smudged incandescence until a vocal sample offers some brief politically tinged respite before the synth tone kicks back in. Mitchell is in equally bullish mood on "213 NL" a straight up drum track that ratchets up into full blow acid filled psychedelia as the final third hones into view. On the Plan B side, Spider drops one of his trademark lurching rhythms, with skittering drums traversing the gritty lower frequencies of "New World Resistance" which is filled with the sort of vocal samples that justifies the title. "Rollercoaster To Nowhere" from Dakini9 is just as impressive, retaining the murky mood yet driven by it's own almost drunken percussive swagger.

Review: Another arm of Chez Damier's multi-limbed Balance Alliance, Courtesy of Balance inaugurate a new series of 12" compilation releases with COB 3, arriving on limited edition transparent vinyl. Amir Alexander kicks things off following a crop of killer releases for Vanguard Sound and Hype LTD with "Dragon Fly!" featuring the subtly undulating bassline and fresh take on the deep house template he's known for, while City 2 City's "True People 88 89 90" comes true on the promise of its title, with a piece of vintage house that goes beyond the usual hollow revivalism. On the flip, Immer & Mr J's "Delta 23" offers a thick piece of mid-tempo house, with a piercing kick drum, offbeat dub chords and contained acid madness, while St Sene & Janeret's "Nightshifter" takes things down a notch with a late-night house track filled with swirling pads and diva vocals swelling on the midnight horizon.

Review: Martin Brodin's MB Disco imprint continues to deliver the good stuff, this time featuring two utterly essential Psychemagik mixes of Alico vs Cagri's "Les Mondes Engloutis". These mixes actually first surfaced on a digital-only release back in 2013, but now they've been buffed up for a full vinyl pressing, and rightly so. A side "Main Mix" is a full bodied, emotional banger with a lead drop to get crowds waving arms and singing along wholeheartedly. Our pick is the "5am Mix" on the flip though, where the synths take on a more shimmering nocturnal tone without losing that bright and bold character that will land this 12" in all manner of record bags this summer.

Review: We always love to hear from the Swedish folks at Studio Barnhus, a bunker-turned studio in Stockholm that serves up left-of-centre sounds on the regular. Ari Bald and CJ Scott combine for this one and bring a usual sense of melodic flair and catchy pop hooks to quality club beats. 'Disko Lena' is house music full of whimsy and charm, 'Panta Tanta' is packed with fun samples and 'Lasse Mango' is a steamy workout with shuffling, garage-lining drums. 'Bogges Bubblor' shuts down with some cosmic magic.

Review: Harness & Spencer don there capes once more to save the dancefloor, providing some of that deep satisfying soulful house for the remix. The very minimal approach to the track serves the purpose perfectly, especially the funk-driven drum sequencing, this remix is more about the groove and movement which will surely have the crowd looking over your shoulder trying to sneak a peek for the artist info and release date. On side B, "Original" - BTG are Nick Santillan and Charles Spencer, this duo have been working together for many years putting out tasty dancefloor treats on Charles Spencer's Loveslap imprint. Santillan a Chi-town native and Spencer a Cali native thru the good graces of music/internet technology have been cooking up their forthcoming LP on Loveslap for the past year or so. This, the first single of the LP, kick starts with an Afrobeat smoker to set the mood, you'll definitely feel the upbeat guitar playing that signifies that this tune is all about having a good time. The strong commanding voice and vocals of Carla Prather will surely catch your attention - " whatcha' gonna do about it " ??!! Dance!!!

Review: Given their illustrious rise over the past twelve months, the appearance of Belfast duo Bicep on the latest Wolf Music release is quite the coup for the London label. Artist and label are of course no strangers, with a Bicep dub of Medlar appearing WOLFEP009, yet there's currently a Midas touch style momentum driving Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar that should ensure this 12" sells out even swifter than previous lupine plates. "Mixmaster 88" is an unadulterated party anthem and another ode to some of their heroes (spot the cheeky Armando usage) yet it's most memorable because it shows Bicep at their most confident. Further house music excellence is afforded with contributions from Casino Times, Medlar and newcomer Ishmael that ensure this is yet another all killer, no filler emission from the Wolf Music stable.

Review: After making a decisive return with the first low-key release on the new Blaufield imprint, Booka Shade step up again with Chelonis R Jones in tow for a more full-bodied release, replete with remixes from Friederike Meissner. The club mix of "Blackout: White Noise" showcases the more tense, physical side of the Booka sound, all driving rhythm and rigid, techy synth lines that belie Jones' involvement. Review: Flexi Cuts is a young label but already one with a great sound. For the sac and time here they dip into their vast pools of talent for a Velvet Series various artists compilation. It is Brine who kicks off with spraying acid synths and clicking beats that are deep but impactful. Daughters & Sons then sink into a lush and dreamy Italo-house reverie and Manuold brings some prickly beats and old school acid to his lo-fi house. The smoky and basement styled house continues on the reverse but it is Glove Hands who steals the show with a dreamy downtempo lullaby for late night lovers.

Review: On this latest transmission from the vale of Dresden, the Uncanny Valley crew have sewn together another four solid cuts of convention-bucking house music to suit more adventurous ears. Brodka comes correct with a heartfelt turn that isn't afraid to embrace vocals within a stripped construction, while Sandrow M's remix of Alex Ketzer opts for a darker tone weighed down by growling bass before turning out some Joy O-style vocal mangling. Cuthead meanwhile is not as concerned with refined production, instead delivering a rugged acid melter that blossoms into a thoroughly jazzed-out affair. Jacob Stoy has his own curious take to bring to the table, working around minimal tones and a simple beat and fleshing the track out with discordant keys that have their own modal message to intone.

Review: Eles bells, this new Vietnam-established/Manchester-based label aren't messing around. Following a remarkable debut from Cottam and their last V/A EP "Ha N?i Nights" comes another impeccable four track sample-based bounty: Byron The Aquarius delivers a hip-hop tickled chugger laced with jazzy twists in the form of "Planet Rock", Cozy Bear gets his bassline wiggle on to some spry off-beat percussion with "Nudi Riddim" while Glenn Davis's "Holdin" preaches nothing but pure gospel. Finally we close with the soothing pads and lightly brushed jack of "Fade" from a mysterious producer who remains nameless. A sublime journey on the highway to Ele.

Review: Party days can't be that far away now, and Cardiology continue to have you covered with some of the choicest slabs in the edit game. This time it's C Da Afro on the buttons, shining bright after a massively productive 2020 in which he slipped out no less than five records. He's clearly not short on material to get busy on the slice and dice with, given the quality of the gear he's presenting on this new 12". As you'd expect for Cardiology the tracks aren't that easily trainspotted, ranging from the insanely catchy disco delights of 'Hustle' to the housed-up funk of 'Hold Up'. It's serious music for serious heads, but with that universal party starting appeal that any self-respecting disco edit should have.

Review: Last year saw Greek edit wunderkind C Da Afro drop two joints on Cardiology amongst a whole load more discofied party fodder for the likes of SpinCat, Sound Exhibitions and more besides. Now he's back on Cardiology with even more goodies to share with the people in the place, leading in with intention through the rabble rousing 'Get On Your Feet'. He's working the filter hard on 'The Solution', teasing the funk until that sweet release on the drop. 'Disco Gang' whips up Backlash's classic '81 stomper 'Hang With The Gang' and gives it a gentle house injection, while 'Doing The Boogie' burrows deep into the groove for a simmering cut to keep the crowd loose and limber.

Review: Sound Exhibitions Records gets those rumps wiggling immediately as soon as the first kicks land on the opening tune of this latest 12". It's a C Da Afro special that bottles up timeless house and disco influences into something new and full of diva-energy and glossy synth strings. 'Lovely Boogie' is just that with its funky bass and pixelated stabs. 'Into The Disco Scene' then picks it up with some fleshy drums and twinkling chords all finished with a monologue about different musical forms over the top.

Review: Some V/As are dubious in their length, seeming to span both EP and mini-compilation length in equal measure, but not this one, which definitely seems to know what it's about. Moiss Music are no stranger to this format, here presenting their second vinyl release 'Watermelon Jam' after the first EP-length four tracker, 'Strawberry Jam'. Nu-disco, funk and house is the name of the game once again, and the tone is set by C Da Afro's 'That Funky Horn' via sample-filtering soul and raucous trumpets. The vocal cuts on this record are among its highlights; Disco Endeavours' 'So High' carries Brandy-esque chirps along a funking house backdrop, while the best of the bunch - 'Feelin's Mutual' by Pookie Knights - channels Carmen or Sylvester in its syrupy refrains and jet-set arps. Even a samba house bit closes it off - a swell all-rounder.

Review: Fans of low end heavy house tunes will be delighted when they hear this new C-Edits. The always classy German label has taken care of the rideable with its own in house team and up first 'The Second Most Popular Game' sinks you into a warm, cavernous groove. Warped bass changes shape and texture throughout while icy hi hats tick up top. 'Liebeshack' then gets more house party in style, with loose sax leads and atmospheric crowd noises over a bristling beat. Last of all an L mix of the same tune is more for warehouse sessions - militant drums march, chord dart about the mix and the whole thing makes you move.

Review: Georgia native Chris Powers is said to have honed his skills in Chicago via "the foggy clubs of London". He is back on his home turf these days with a residency at Atlanta's Hunger club night and his own Cape Fear gig in Savannah. Appearing here for NYC upstarts Alliance Upholstery, Powers delivers the rather impressive "All Right", a dusty and looped up house affair with sampled disco aesthetics adding to its allure. It gets a bunch of stellar remixes too, courtesy of Chicago legend Parris Mitchell who injects some added funk and sleazy disco aesthetic for added measure. Review: Chad Pulley first appeared on Nigel Hayes and Vincent Inc's Astrolife in 2019 with a digital-only release, and now he returns with vocalist Natalia Kissoon on the sweet and soulful 'Windows'. The original version is steeped in bluesy Rhodes and a bubbly rhythm section working away behind Kissoon's voice, but there's also plenty more versions to savour as well. First up is a crisp and bumping version from deep techno veteran John Beltran, who offers up a plethora of bleeps and pads behind a classic 909 shuffle. Hayes takes things in a deeper direction which stays true to Pulley's original, and then there's a beautifully suspended beatless version to close the record out for those who want to simply revel in Kissoon's lyrics.

Review: Following previous drops from Mr Stone, Pico and Professor Balthasar, the Odd Numbers label continues its march into cheeky-but-deep house music with this cool and deadly two-tracker from CAB. Atop the steady-trucking, funkified undercarriage of 'Poppa' there's a mellow mood which should sit right with the current wave of deep but uptempo club gear doing the rounds. 'Mischief' has a smoky demeanour and plenty of wigged-out sounds creeping through the folds of the mix, but it's still primed for the peak time floor where it counts. The Odd Numbers crew prove once again to be a safe bet for the classiest of contemporary house with brains and brawn in equal measure.

Review: In the mid-1990s Cab Drivers were dominating the new house and techno sound from Europe, alongside the likes of Pepe Bradock, Round Two and the rest of the no nonsense house mafia. Since the 2010's, they've resurrected their project, coming through with plenty of new fire, and their back in 2016 with a raunchy new four-tracker in the same vein as their original 'sound'. Stripped-back, mechanical and dubby would be three key words that come instantly to mind, and although that may sound simplistic, it is exactly that strain of raw energy that gives tunes like "Track Without Bassline" or "Cablife" their zest. It's new, contemporary house music that has been made with the past in mind, but locked somewhere deep in the subconscious.

Review: While trends in house music come and go, the Cabin Fever Trax series rolls on relentlessly drawing on an seemingly infinite chasm of secret weapons from Matt "Radio Slave" Edwards. Vol 27 arrives on purple wax sporting two of Edwards' heftiest slabs of dancefloor devastation, with "Ring Play" perhaps a riposte to some of the shallower attempts to ape/recreate/replicate the classic Chicago Deep House sound - what begins as a quite standard 4/4 groove swiftly descends into looped up dub house madness without ever losing its rhythmic focus. Even better is "Freeze Me", an unforgiving and unflinching sweaty mass of pummelling hi-hats, cavernous rave stabs and hypnosis inducing vocals which lurches forward with the kind of industrial energy appropriate for 5am.
