Its mission is to put younger and older jazz artists in the same studio and get them to collarbone on new music that rings out the best of both perspectives. This 14th instalment brings Andrian Younge together with Henry Franklin and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The eight resulting tracks are busy arrangements with big horns and freeform drum patterns that all sound utterly alive and improvised in the spur of the moment. This is a great volume in a series full of them.

Review: The much loved and always essential Jazz Is Dead series hits instalment number eight here. The project was only conceived in 2020 by musicians and producers Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad and aims to work with jazz legends on new material. This time it is Gil-Scott Heron's famous partner Brain Jackson in the spotlight. There are plenty of languid grooves that float on airy drumming with acoustic piano and electric bass also weaved in. Afro-Cuban flavours colour closeR 'Ethiopian Sunshower,' which is the most sedate of the lot.

Review: On the latest instalment in their essential Jazz is Dead series, musical polymaths Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have joined forces with Katalyst, a Los Angeles-based collective of musicians whose work is inspired by their 1960s Californian predecessors Afrikan People's Arkestra and Union of God Musicians Ascension Association. What's an offer is undeniably impressive and, at genuinely life-affirming, with the assembled cast doing a superb job of joining the dots between spiritual jazz, soul-jazz, horizontal jazz-funk and deeper, more sun-kissed flavours. Highlights are plentiful and include, though are no way limited to, the breezy 'Juneteenth', the languid dancefloor shuffle and sustained electric piano motifs of 'The Avenues' and the morning-fresh wonder that is 'Daybreak'.

Review: The Jazz Is Dead series finds Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad calling on a cast of collaborators to go deep on an album's worth of contemporary jazz. Past projects have featured Jean Carn, Brian Jackson and Gary Bartz, and now it's the turn of breakout LA collective Katalyst. Katalyst operate as a communal endeavour in the tradition of Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan People's Arkestra, with all members pooling their compositions and ideas and helping each other grow as artists. Between them, the various players have been linked to MNDSGN, Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar to name but a few, so you should have some idea of the quality at work on this latest entry in the crucial series.

Review: Contemporary jazz heroes Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have impressive pulling power. Since inaugurating the Jazz Is Dead series, the multi-instrumentalists-turned-producers have been able to entice a string of jazz, soul and jazz-funk greats into their Los Angeles studio, including Roy Ayers, Azymuth, Jean Carn, Marcus Valle and Phil Ranelin. They've done it again on volume 17, with all-round legend Lonnie Liston-Smith bringing his spiritually-enriching, sun-soaked jazz-funk sound to the table. His soulful, life-affirming voice soars above bustling jazz breaks, twinkling piano parts, smooth bass, flanged funk guitars, spacey synths, hazy horns and sonic translations of the Californian coastline at dusk. As brilliant as you'd expect it to be, all told.

It reads like a who's who of contemporary jazz players and opens with none other than broken beat maestro Kadi Tatham. His take on Marcos Valle's 'Gotta Love Again' is a real joy, while there are low fi beat delights from Pink Sifu, chopped up sounds from Cut Chemist and a gloriously sunny and upbeat version of Doug Carn's 'Windfall' by Natureboy Flako who produced Fatima's excellent last album.

Review: Since launching the Jazz is Dead series two years ago, Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muuhammad have released eight studio albums - each a collaboration with a different figure from the jazz and soul spectrum - and a compilation of instrumental takes. It makes sense, then, that volume 10 is a remix album, with a variety of producers putting their stamp on cuts from the pair's expansive joint catalogue. As you'd expect, it's packed to the rafters with killer hip-hop, downtempo and broken beat reworks, with highlights including Cut Chemist's head-nodding, cinematic hip-hop take on Gary Bartz hook-up 'Soulsea', Shigeto's contemporary spiritual jazz revision of Brian Jackson co-production 'Nacy Wilson', and DJ Spinna's squelchy, house-not-house rub of Azymouth collaboration 'Rendor Do Samba'. Review: Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad share the 21st volume in the 'Jazz Is Dead' series, the LA-based "love story" founded by the pair in the fallout of the latter's involvement in A Tribe Called Quest. Jazz Is Dead is a longstanding series committed to unearthing and re-sharing the jazz artists who, after initial releases, found continual success in the continua of hip-hop and pop, especially by way of being sampled by other artists. That said, all the artists featured share new contributions to the series, rather than reissued goldies. A new eight-track record, this is yet another LP, one that multiplicitously celebrates and continues the legacies of the greats: chief among them this time is Ghanaian highlife and afrobeat pioneer Ebo Taylor - whom at 88 years old contributes the jolly synth-sonic rivulet 'Obi Do Woa', a sagacious modernising of his originally 70s and 80s psycho-beat sound - and Antonio Carlos e Jocafi, who updates, in the label's own words, "some of the sweetest samba-soul of the 1970s by way of Salvador, Bahia," Brazil.
