Review: Wasia Project are a South Croydon-raised sibling duo - Olivia Hardy (vocals, guitar) and William Gao (keyboards, piano, vocals) - who strike a nice balance in sharing the limelight. This is only their second EP but you can tell they're going to be massive. They've already toured in support of Tom Odell and Laufey and they clearly have the quality to go the distance. 'Somebody Come Through' is as good as anything Sharon Van Etten has released. 'Track 6' brings back memories of listening to Beach House and 'To Get Better' is reminiscent of Matt Maltese. Underneath all the indie references there's a really strong classical training and we hear that on the closing track, with a masterful piano crescendo dimming the lights, but leaving us wanting for more.

Review: Tamara Lindeman was at a real transition point in life when What Am I Going to do With Everything I Know was first unveiled. A six track strong EP, here the moodiness and tangible sense of isolation, loneliness, and hopelessness that had once emanated from her voice dissipates into equally tender and gentile thoughts on an impending marriage and all that may come with it. For some, an equally troubling time in their lives, for others something to truly work towards and - when it finally arrives - celebrate, either way it's a subject ripe for emotional songwriting.

But in actual fact, Lindeman, her fiance and troupe treat the concept of matrimony with something close to apathy, or at least lackadaisical 'might as well'-ness. The culmination of this record, 'Almost Careless', sees her ask the question 'what if', but in a way that's neither excited nor nervous, but simply filled with inquisitiveness and a matter of fact consideration.

Oblique Fantasy (part 1) (3:48)

Review: Talk about being in it for the long-haul. Jane Weaver lays claim to an on-stage history stretching all the way back to the Britpop era, forming Kill Laura while still at sixth form college and managing to bag some releases on Polydor in the process. That achievement should have told us what was coming, after the Misty Dixon band project, but some might still need telling. A northern English tour de force, as a solo-ist Widnes-born Weaver is the kind of artist that defines enigmatic. Her sound is this varied take on electronic pop with elements, or at least moments, of acoustic bliss or sorrow, alternative rock guts, and psychedelic oddness. Oblique Fantasy, her latest two-tracker, is a case in point. Divided into 'Part 1' and 'Part 2', it may or may not make you think of Long Blondes hitting the studio with Goldfrapp.

As a breakout hit from his mixtape era, it showcases his seductive charm and magnetic presence, drawing listeners into his world of late-night escapades and hedonistic pleasures with infectious beats and smooth vocals that exude confidence and swagger and set the stage for his meteoric rise to fame and influence in the years to come. Review: It was always a pretty weird idea for Weezer to turn their attention on Vivaldi's violin concertos, The Four Seasons, and release a four-part EP series inspired by those classical landmarks. An out of the blue concept given this Rivers Cuomo-led outfit aren't exactly famed for waxing lyrical about the legendary work.

Nevertheless, fans should not be put off, nor should they expect to find a collection of tracks that look to rework Vivaldi via geek surf rock. Well, OK, maybe two of the songs here do exactly that - 'Opening Night' and 'Lawn Chair'. Or at least they both have string and guitar movements that look to pay homage to the master composer. But, for the most part, this is Weezer doing what Weezer do: sounding very much like Weezer.

Review: The 40th Anniversary Edition of this holiday classic offers a delightful blend of nostalgia and fresh takes. The original version remains as timeless as ever, with its catchy melody and bittersweet lyrics that perfectly capture the essence of love and heartbreak. The 'Pudding Mix' offers a playful, slightly altered version, adding a new layer of festive charm while still staying true to the original's spirit. A live rendition from Wembley Arena in 2006 brings a burst of energy, with the crowd's enthusiasm amplifying the track's warmth and excitement. For those who appreciate the finer details, the instrumental version removes the vocals, allowing the lush synths and intricate production to shine. This holiday classic never gets old. With these different versions, you can enjoy the song in many new exciting ways.

Review: Fronted by Dane-dame Sannie Carlson, Whigfield was backed by various producers and engineers over the years, main among whom was the towering Larry Pignagnoli. *The* song to commemorate Whigfield by, 'Saturday Night' is a Europop and Eurodance trailblazer, harking back, perhaps, to a more glamorous time, where fashion designers rubbed shoulders with models, PR girls and riviera DJs for Italian and Danish upper crusts. Carlson would record 'Saturday Night' after meeting fellow DJ Davide Riva, who was also part of a music production duo. In three days, an (in your mind-) sticky, bubblegum-popping opus would be written, with a nursery-rhyming refrain and a jaunty na-na-na hook epitomising the notion of a "hair-dryer song", a term coined by Simon Cowell in reference to the song as a precursor to Rebecca Black's 'Friday': "the kind of song girls sing into their hair dryers before getting ready to go out."

Review: Ashaine White's third EP, Cause For Concern, showcases her undeniable talent and solidifies her presence in the UK soul scene. The EP leads with 'White Flag,' a track already generating buzz for its soulful depth and Ashaine's commanding voice. Her vocal prowess, coupled with emotionally charged lyrics, makes this a great example at an artist who is being heralded as a true and unique artist in black music. The EP offers tracks like 'Hotel,' a smooth, introspective number, and 'All My Wrongs,' which delves into themes of regret and self-reflection. 'Brace Yourself' adds another layer of intensity, while 'The End' brings a haunting close to the collection, highlighting Ashaine's ability to evoke powerful emotions. A live version of 'Hotel,' recorded at Studio 13, provides a raw, intimate glimpse into Ashaine's live performance energy. With Cause For Concern, Ashaine White continues to establish herself as a rising star, blending soulful melodies with heartfelt storytelling.

Review: Jack White's Third Man Records are among the best in the business in turning people onto vinyl records and countering the model presented by streaming giants. Perhaps it's partly down to the White Stripes legend's early years as a restorer of vintage furniture, but whichever product appears with his Third Man brand on it has the look and feel of real craftsmanship, with a meticulous and stylish eye for detail. This new one-sided etched 7" - who needs b-sides? - is a real gem to have in anyone's collection as it oozes with Jack White's punk rock spirit and makes a real case for affordable single production. This loud, banging instrumental track originally came out on streaming services only in 2017 and was White's first track in three years at the time. White is at his viscerally entertaining best when he's at his heaviest, with the distortion cranked. And the signals emanating from his amp here sound like an indie-rock banging of the war drum, making for a fun yet furious two-and-a-half minutes.

Say You Love Me
Review: First released on streaming platforms last summer, Wilco's 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud' EP was uniformly praised by critics. Much more than a stop gap between albums (it arrived roughly 12 months after the outfit's lauded 13th studio full-length, Cousin), the six-track set bristles with inventiveness while flitting between styles and tempos. So, opener 'Hot Sun', a sticky slab of Americana-tinged jangly indie brilliance, is followed by the reverb and solo-laden alt-rock squall of 'Livid' and the gentle, string-laden swoon of 'Ice Cream'. And so it continues, with the fuzzy positivity and weary vocals of 'Annihilation' being joined by the pleasant, impossible-to-pigeonhole experimentalism of 'Inside The Bell Bones' and the twinkling, heartfelt melancholia of 'Say You Love Me'.

Review: While Wilco has often regarded EPs as secondary offerings, their latest release, 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud', defies that trend by presenting a cohesive artistic statement reminiscent of a full album. Unlike previous EPs, which were typically promotional in nature, this six-song collection embraces the format's potential, showcasing the band's versatility and depth. The opener, 'Hot Sun', blends sensations of pleasure and existential anxiety, as Jeff Tweedy questions his role in the face of climate change. Each track feels intentional, flowing smoothly into the next while exploring various facets of the band's identity. The two-part structure features instrumental pieces that punctuate the vocal tracks, showcasing a mix of melody and dissonance that reflects their eclectic sound. From the reflective 'Ice Cream' to the energetic chaos of 'Inside the Bell Bones', Wilco exhibits an impressive range, seamlessly blending elements of rock, country and experimentation. 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud' not only stands as a remarkable addition to their discography but also redefines the possibilities of the EP format in their artistic journey.

Review: Wolf Alice's evolution from a duo to a quartet has been nothing short of meteoric. Over a decade since Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie first joined forces, the band has soared to remarkable heights. Their decision to repress their third EP, Creature Songs, on white vinyl for its ten year anniversary, highlights their commitment to honoring their roots while embracing their future. Wolf Alice's Creature Songs EP is a vibrant ode to '90s grunge, but with a distinct 2014 twist. The EP showcases the band's ability to seamlessly shift between raw, angst-filled tracks like 'Moaning Lisa Smile' and 'Storms,' to more melodic and atmospheric tunes such as 'Heavenly Creatures' and 'We're Not The Same.' While their aesthetic may nod to a bygone era, their sound is undeniably contemporary and powerful. With Ellie Rowsell's commanding vocals and the band's expertly crafted hooks and riffs, Creature Songs proves that Wolf Alice is not just a nostalgic throwback, but a force to be reckoned with in the present music scene.

Cellar Door (Spiritbox Cover) (2:28)
Review: Chelsea Wolfe's latest album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, is a haunting and emotionally charged masterpiece. Known for her shadowy blend of Gothic industrial, doom, and folk, Wolfe delves deeper into electronic soundscapes with this release, while maintaining her trademark dark, atmospheric style. The album explores themes of severing toxic ties and the cyclical nature of grief and healing. With ten tracks that seamlessly blend industrial textures, eerie vocals and ambient layers, it's an immersive journey from start to finish. Tracks include the opener 'Whispers in the Echo Chamber', where Wolfe's hushed vocals and industrial beats create a brooding atmosphere, and 'Everything Turns Blue', a track full of lyrical power and electronic drive. The closer 'Dusk' is a breathtaking finale with a casual yet explosive climax. While the middle sectionifeaturing 'The Liminal', 'Eyes Like Nightshade' and 'Salt'islows the album slightly, their deep atmosphere still shines. Other highlights like 'House of Self-Undoing' and 'Unseen World' elevate the record to new heights with their driving rhythms and haunting melodies. Overall, this is a powerful, deeply personal album that fans of darkwave, industrial, and ambient metal will adore.

Minsky Rock Megamix II (23:03)
Review: Are Working Men's Club the best band to have emerged from northern England in the past decade? We'd say there's a very, very good chance. Catch them live on stage and Sydney Minsky-Sargeant, Liam Ogburn, Hannah Cobb and Mairead O'Connor are utterly captivating, and their combination of post punk, rock, electronica, and acid house transfers very well onto record too. Their DJ sets, for which 'Syd' leads the charge, are also nothing short of quality. Informed by genre-less masters such as Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe and Erol Alkan, as this latest Megamix goes to show, the idea is to create these deeply immersive cosmic soundscapes that aim directly for the dance floor, taking phrases and sounds from their songs, reworking, rethinking and rearranging them into something fresh and high energy. Impossible not to make an impact.

Review: If you've been keeping an eye on the COVID-19 musical landscape a few things will be clear by now - much is in pieces, and Working Men's Club's debut album, arguably this year's most anticipated, has been postponed until October. You might also have picked up on the fact they made this pandemic party megamix available to stream for free for one week over summer, meaning it's probably scored a few living room moments already.

The release is basically 21-minutes of seamlessly melded synthdom taken from a full record which, as yet, hasn't really been heard save for a few tasters. And the result is perhaps the best example of the intensity, energy and drive that defines every one of the band's fabled live performances. Synth-punk-elec-indie packing huge sounds, finely tuned details and an overall forward atmosphere.

It is 30 minutes of well rounded sound files with narrative that takes and more nuanced, personal approach than his breakthrough, anti-gentrification anthem 'South' and much loved LP, LOGGERHEAD. The big energy of those is replaced here by a series of diary entries that all take inspiration from growing up in Brixton. Review: It only seems like yesterday when Nick Cave delivered his wonderfully captivating joint piece with fellow-Australian Bad Seed Warren Ellis. In fact it was early March, and since then we've all likely been through the kinds of highs and lows this record reflects so accurately. There's a lot of space to Carnage, but it's also an album of intensity, in a refined and sophisticated way.

Packed with incredibly cinematic, theatrical and dramatic moments, at its loudest 'White Elephant' is bordering on a genuinely euphoric religious experience, one rousing and hugely emotional crescendo of chorus and big stage notes after another. At its quietest, 'Shattered Ground' sounds like one man alone with a piano and eternal sadness. Meanwhile, the title track is classic troubadour business. In summary, a grand, mesmerising and personal voyage.

Review: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis returned to Australia for sixteen shows last year, taking their 2021 album Carnage on the road, along with songs from the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds catalogue. Three performances at the Sydney Opera House on December 16-18 were the climactic shows of an emotional trip, captured for a new live album, Australian Carnage - Live At The Sydney Opera House. Cave himself said of the project: "Every show was moving and unforgettable, from the intimacy of playing in theatres and arts centres, to the vast and uplifting nights at Hanging Rock, through to our final three nights at the inimitable Sydney Opera House."
