Review: This third volume of instrumentals continues the faultless Isle of Jura label's deep dive into dub versions and beyond. Side one takes in references from UK street soul and reggae and features two late-'80s tracks by Howard Hill with machine-led rhythms, rudeboy reggae skank and soulful pads. Protek's 'I Love to Dance With You' is a proto-house gem featured in a Jura Soundsystem mix and here it gets a loving re-edit by The Nightlark. Side B includes an instrumental-driven track with spacey FX from The Cool Notes' and Ilija Rudman's 'Dub 4 Love' which is a knowing nod to acid house's golden era.

Ride guitarist and singer Andy Bell has been busy in recent times, to put it mildly, as plans to release three EPs and an album between April and June 2021 prove. All set to be put out under the series title 'Ever Decreasing Circles', The Indica Gallery EP is the first in that set, and suggests we're in for a very, very interesting time when the next instalments follow.
The release comprises five remixes of tracks from Bell's 2020 solo outing, The View From Halfway Down, with reworkings completed by Martin Jenkins' Pye Corner Audio project, and the sixth piece here coming in the form of Bell's own edit of a PCA remix of his work, here credited to his GLOK alias. Name-dropping done, the record is a dense electronic trip into psychedelic cosmic disco slo-mo territories, dream-like ambient beauty and loose, baggy-trousered, nostalgic elec-indie fare.

Review: With over 50 years of experience dating way back to the early 70s with the progressive outfit Zebra, Joan has left quite a discography that is still being discovered and enjoyed. This EP - Joan Bibloni's second appearance on the label in total - features three versions of 'Badia Onirica', two of them being language versions and then the instrumental. Overall, the song is a track fitting for the Cafe Del Mar sound - a mix of folk, electronica, house with a Latin and folk influence and versions in Spanish and Catalan. An EP for watching the sunsets, dreaming on the beach and remembering life's great time with friends and family. NuNorthernSoul continues to honor the chill out legacy.

Review: Goats In A Hypnotic State is one of those deep, moving explorations of ambient soundscapes that smudges together ethereal drones, field recording, and mesmerising synth textures. The three-track work evokes a sense of surreal calm as delicate melodies and subtle rhythms build hypnotic atmospheres and each piece unfolds slowly, with layers of sound intertwining to create a vast, meditative space. The organic sounds of nature, such as distant goat calls and wind, ground the work, while the synthetic elements elevate its dreamlike quality. Overall there is no way you can hear this and not be invited into a tranquil, introspective world where time and thought dissolve into the music itself.

Review: Pais Tropical are perhaps not one of the best-known Italian house outfits from the "dream house" period of the late '80s and early '90s, but their sole release - 1990's 'Melodya'- is certainly one of the finest "overlooked gems" of that loved-up era. Sound Metaphors has spotted this, hence this welcome reissue on their reissue focused THANK YOU imprint. The A-side 'Club Mix' offers a perfect balance between Sueno Latino/Keys & Tronics Ensemble style melodious deep house and, thanks to (mock) acoustic guitar solos, Balearic house from the period. Over on the flip, the 'Manaus Mix' is a chunkier, more percussive take full of sustained chords and tropical noises, while the 'Shockout Mix' goes bigger on the piano motifs and New Jersey-influenced Italo-house vibes. Saucer-eyed perfection.

Review: A salient classic dub / roots tune that first surfaced in 1982, 'Joker Smoker' lies among singer Triston Palmer's earliest and most formative tunes, making for the star cut on his eponymous album from 1982. 'Joker Smoker' muses on the habit of fair-weather smoking from a heavyweight puffer's perspective, and casts scorn on those dopey dilettantes who dabble yet don't devote. In Palmer's own lyrical words: "To give away, I don't feel, no way / But everyday you a come with the sensi / Mi a beg you a spliff, sir / Mi a beg you a cigarette, sir /Mi a borrow your lighter / 'Cause dem are joker smoker!" Seemingly innocuous, the song nonetheless reveals the libidinal reality of smoking from an on-the-ground POV, one heavily bound up in ideas of excess, machismo, economy and the keeping up of airs (whether tinged with that sweet sensi pong or not). And here comes a full forty-years-on reissue of the original riddim, including its dub version and censorious acapella.
