5 Borough Breaks Vol 35
Cat: 5BB 034. Rel: 02 May 25
Blahzay Blahzay - "Danger" (3:43)
Gwen McCrae - "Rockin Chair" (3:20)
Review: .5 Borough Breaks are back with another essential slice of 90s hip-hop nostalgia. Their latest 7" revives a 1995 Hot 97 favourite-a gritty, golden-era banger that once ruled the NYC airwaves. Handily pressed for both DJs and collectors, Blahzay Blahzay's 'Danger' captures the raw energy of East Coast rap at its peak. As always with this label, the flip side features the original sample source: a soulful gem 'Rockin Chair' from recently departed legend Gwen McCrae whose legacy shaped generations of soul fans and hip-hop heads. As such, this 7" combines deep digging with authentic hip-hop flair and pays tribute to both the beatmakers and the soul pioneers who inspired them. Essential wax.

General Soria - "Too Many Worries & Problems" (dub) (3:28)
Review: Rain A Fall returns with more of its lovely roots goodness on a new and crucial 45rpm that pairs General Soria with Brother Wildman. The latter kicks off with 'Too Many Worries & Problems' which is a heavy, hard-hitting digital roots tune with tough lyrics that do not pull any punches. It's perfect for all roots and sound system enthusiasts, as is the flipside dub from General Soria which rewires it with extra heavy low ends and cavernous kicks for summer fun.

Teddy Charmer - "All In My Life" (2:48)
Gregory Isaacs - "Dancing Floor" (2:18)
Review: The magical 'All in My Life' is an unreleased and heartbroken lovers rock steady track sung by a humble figure over a smooth rhythm. While missing the glamour of a horn section, it's driven by a lilting organ reminiscent of Buster Allstars. The B-side, 'Dancing Floor,' is the only song Gregory Isaacs recorded under Buster's production and so it is a rather rare gem. It features a melancholic melody and Isaacs' signature sweet voice that very much come from the golden age of early reggae. Both tracks showcase a raw side of the genre and as they are lesser known, they are sure to make a big impact whenever played.

Never Give Up On Jah

Johnny Clarke - "Never Give Up On Jah" (3:50)
Green Cross - "Style Ah Weh We Love" (3:35)
Review: Johnny Clarke is of course, a roots reggae legend with a vast, and high-quality, discography that has contributed to the evolution of the genre over many years. For this one he teams up with Green Cross on 'Never Give Up On Jah', a heavyweight drop on Heartical in France. Clarke's unmistakable voice delivers a message of perseverance and spiritual strength, and it serves as a fine reminder of roots reggae's enduring power to move you in more ways than one. The riddim is deep, warm and dubwise and on the flip is the flaky, wobbly, Green Cross cut 'Style Ah Weh We Love.'

Review: Following the likes of 'A Journey Into Abstract HipHop' and 'Snap Your Neck Back', the Gasoline collective continued their early legacy with 'Fuck You I'm 21' which arrived digitally in 2023, 21 years after the debut EP. It comes now as a 7" with all the original cuts included. The opener is an old-school blend of raw beats, scratching and smart samples, 'Human Sucks' then pairs moody spoke words with eerie late-night boom-bap and 'Zattar' is a short beat interlude that oozes atmosphere. 'Dark In The 46th District' is the final short but pithy beat sketch which is a great example of experimental hip-hop and beat culture from the turn of the millennium.

General TK - "How We Love Reggae Music So"
Scientist - "How We Dub Reggae Music So"
Review: One of the emblem-bearers of reggae digging in Japan, Ninjapan now turn their hands to two of the foremost Jamaican originators of the genre, Scientist and General TK. Extremely difficult to track down, 'How We Love Reggae Music So' and its corresponding B-side might as well have never before seen a release, only having cropped up in a handful of DJ mixes and unofficial tapes so far. Produced lovingly by the legend Hopeton Brown aka. Scientist on the version, TK's vocals glide with determined confidence over staunch horns and echoic effects, producing only the best of hypnotic effects on this new 7".

Review: Ghost Dubs aka. Michael Fiedler returns to pile on the Pressure. Following recent acclaim-gatherer Damaged, this extension of the LP further serves to distend the dub, surveying and excavating fossil-rich terrains of soiled bass and coarse texture. Six reconstructed dub reformations, only two tracks, ';Chemical Version' and 'Wired Version', were previously available digitally; both introduce the record as warped yet unassuming undercuts, ripe for the meditating-to. 'Thin Dub' dissolves the mood into an echo-drenched texture; the track is marked by an up-down, contradistinct set of tuned impacts. 'Dub Craft', meanwhile, snatches the crown for most subby tune of the year.

Review: Brooklyn-born street soul artist Martine Girault was an epitomal artist in the genre, and her extended stopover in the UK would prove instrumental in its development, despite her American origins. She was fittingly also a favourite of many international label staples from Eskimo Recordings to Opaz; while in the UK, she collaborated with producer Ray Hayden of Opaz for her standout single 'Revival'. A significant underground hit, 'Revival' veers on the aspirated side of the downbeat street soul sound. Girault's style is both angelic and hoarse, and riffs on the temporal bubbles of the contemporaneous genre new jack swing, while getting at something much higher than either style alone can peg. This reissue reproduces the song in pristine stereo, and brings out the ghost-noted piano hook to extra pop-out effect.

Eisbar (4:47)
FILM 2 (3:38)
Ich Lieb Sie (3:15)
Review: Few tracks capture the icy allure of early 80s electronic experimentation quite like this underground classic. Originally released in 1981, this Swiss post-punk/coldwave classic has transcended its era, becoming a cult favorite across underground scenes and DJ sets of various genres. Now reissued on limited blue vinyl, its influence remains undeniable. 'Eisbaer' is a track that bridges stark, minimalist electronics with the raw energy of post-punk. The hypnotic bassline and cold, robotic drum programming lay a foundation for jagged guitar stabs and eerie synth flourishes, creating an urgent, mechanical pulse. The disaffected, almost mantra-like vocalsideclaring "Ich mochte ein Eisbar sein" ("I want to be a polar bear")iheighten its existential detachment. Echoes of Throbbing Gristle's industrial edge and Cabaret Voltaire's abstract electronics blend seamlessly with the emerging synth-pop movement, helping to push new wave into more danceable, electronic territory. Side B's 'Film 2' takes a more abrasive approach, a pounding, near-industrial instrumental that pulses with motorik intensity. 'Ich Lieb Sie' is more restrained but equally unsettling, its sparse arrangement and ghostly atmosphere reinforcing Grauzone's unique ability to evoke emotion through minimalism. Timeless and still chillingly modern, this reissue ensures that Eisbar and its B-sides continue to inspire. A crucial document of coldwave's evolution, reaffirming why this track remains a DJ favourite decades later.

Review: Following the success of last year's Walks, Group Listening returns with a new 12" for PRAH Recordings. The title and artwork both explore themes of decay, expiration and musical renewal and the music was in part inspired by a small DIY festival in Bristol. Paul Jones explains the title represents a radical, open call for change while 'Tell Everyone Everything' is a layered, intense synth soundscape with destined pads and nimble chords that lock you in the here and now. The release also features remixes by Ancient Plastix and Loggsplitter who bring sub-aquatic dub and mind-melting rhythmic intricacies.

Review: This collaborative EP brings together two Australian artists, blending their unique takes on progressive house, techno, trance, and chill-out music into a seamless collection that transports listeners back to the laid-back vibes of the early 90s. The result is a stunning journey through balearic and downtempo landscapes, with each track offering a nostalgic yet fresh twist. Side-A opens with 'Zephyr', a gentle, early 90s Balearic track that recalls the atmospheric essence of William Orbit's 'Water From A Vine Leaf'. With its hip beat, soothing piano and urban edge, it immediately sets a reflective tone. 'Liana's Cove' follows with a slow groove, deep bassline and mystical ambiance that invites you to get deeper into the music, evoking the tranquil isolation of a hidden bay. On Side-B, 'Perfect Harmony (feat. Sa+ga)' introduces a chill-out urban style with its downtempo breakbeat and smooth, laid-back flow perfect for winding down. Closing the EP is 'Spindrift', a funky chill-out gem, light and floaty with an aquatic atmosphere that feels like drifting along calm waters. Together, these tracks create a rich, cohesive sound that bridges the past with the present. Bring back the chill out rooms!

Review: A rare gem from the golden age of early reggae, this 1970 cut by Justin Hinds was originally released on a Duke Reid 7". It gets a welcome reissue here but still has plenty of lo-fi aesthetics, vinyl crackle and dusty sound that keeps it authentic rather than overly polished. Hinds' soulful vocal delivery and signature rhythm style shine as they capture the spirit of the era with subtle flair. On the flip side, a slinky, instrumental organ version by Gus McIntyre adds serious depth and makes this an irresistible double-sider or cracking up nice and loud through some towering speaker stacks.

Review: Cute 7" here featuring two very different but equally fantastic soul sounds. Lisa Stansfield's 'Eight Three One' is a sleek outing full of her signature smooth vocals over a gentle but compelling groove. It embodies an effortless mix of pop and r&b while Stansfield's rich tone elevates it to another level. On the flip side, Gloria Gaynor's 'This Love Affair' brings the energy with her famously powerful delivery and disco-infused sound making this one a real dance anthem. Its combination of catchy melodies with a heartfelt narrative of love and longing means it delivers on more levels than one and together, both tunes offer a fine balance of danceability and emotional depth.

Back in 2018 Leaving Records first released this low key gem from Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes, which blended the natural lull of live saxophone and bass guitar with considered FX processing to create some spellbinding grooves somewhere on the outer periphery of soul jazz. It's totally fresh, totally chill, and bursting with soul thanks to the impeccable playing from Gendel and Wilkes. It's gone through a number of iterations including previous tape issues and a white label private press run of 50, and now it's finally getting a repress so the latecomers can cop a wax edition and shirk the scalpers. Music this warm and fuzzy deserves to be heard on wax.

Review: This release saw Genesis balancing their progressive rock origins with a more radio-friendly sound when it hit in 1983, creating a seamless fusion of complexity and accessibility. Tracks such as 'Mama' - the first single that heralded the album's arrival - bring an eerie edge, with Phil Collins' emotive delivery matched by brooding synths and steady percussion. By contrast, 'That's All' offers a buoyant, piano-led melody that feels both light and intricate, showing the trio's knack for crafting memorable hooks without losing their musical depth. The instrumentation remains sharp and purposeful throughout, highlighting the group's ability to adapt their style while maintaining a sense of innovation.

Review: Prog rock giants Genesis caught in live action in London in late 1973, a mere month after the release of their Selling England By The Pound album. This is what many claim to be the band at the height of their powers, with their highly celebrated Foxtrot album not long behind them, hitting their experimental, quirky time signature peak and with Peter Gabriel still commanding the microphone. Opening with the thrusting 'Watcher of the Skies', Tony Banks' keyboard stabs almost rave-like in their stabbing power, they hurtle through tracks from the latest offering ('The Cinema Show', 'Battle of Epping Forest' and the anthemic 'I Know What I Like') alongside Nursey Cryme album fan favourite 'The Musical Box' and a version of the epic 'Supper's Ready' that stretches to nearly 24 minutes here. 'More Fool Me', meanwhile, which sees drummer Phil Collins step forward to sing its folksy, almost Bee Gees-like pop strains, points to where the band would be in a handful of years' time.

The vision of Tobias Forge, renowned for his charismatic vocal cadence and immense range, but more so for his undertaking of different characters and monikers for each album cycle, the Papa Emeritus IV delving into empirical fallacies on their previous outing has been usurped by Papa V Perpetua, who promises to deliver his band of Nameless Ghouls' "most unflinchingly introspective work to date" while showcasing "distinct individual emotional vistas", touching on "demonic possessions" and the allure of succumbing to "dark forces". Review: Skeleta marks the sixth full-length from Swedish theatrical goth rock entity Ghost, following on from 2022's retro stadium-goth swing for the fences Impera. Known for their high-concept aesthetic solely credited to mastermind Tobias Forge, who undertakes differing mantles and characters pertaining to each era and project, Papa Emeritus IV who fronted their preceding work has now been replaced by Papa V Perpetua, and while his predecessor was said to have been driven by ruminations on empirical reigns, the latest leader of the band of "Nameless Ghouls" is more concerned with "demonic possessions" and succumbing to "dark forces", with the album promised to be their "most unflinchingly introspective work to date" while showcasing "distinct individual emotional vistas". With big riffs, soaring hooks and a lead single as brazenly titled as 'Satanized', it's time for yet another era of overtly gothic and purposefully cheesy occult-rock.

The Revelations - "I Love You For All Seasons"
Review: Ghostface Killah's 36 Seasons, first released in 2014, plays out like a gritty graphic novel; we follow Ghostface's maskless alter-ego Tony Starks as he returns to Staten Island after nine years in solitary. Expecting to reunite with his old life, he instead finds his community in disarray, friends turned enemies and betrayal lurking around every corner. So, fuelled by revenge and a broken heart, Starks becomes a reluctant antihero, navigating a grave landscape of corruption, street politics and lost love. The album unfolds over soul-drenched production from The Revelations, creating a cinematic backdrop for the narrative's descent into movie violence and moral compromise. This reissue through Salvation keeps true to the album's original totting of 14 tracks, eschewing the extra ten on the deluxe edition.

Review: Celebrating its tenth anniversary, 36 Seasons remains a unique album, combining gritty storytelling with soul-driven production. With a compelling narrative written by Matthew Rosenberg, the album immerses listeners in the life of Tony Starks, a streetwise figure navigating betrayal, revenge and redemption. The collaboration with The Revelations brings a fresh, live-band sound that elevates the classic Ghostface energy, blending sharp lyricism with rich, retro-soul instrumentation. Guest performances feature Kool G Rap, AZ and Pharoahe Monch further enhance the storytelling, adding layers of character development, while tracks like 'The Dogs of War' and 'Homicide' showcase sharp lyricism and dramatic tension, while the album's emotional depth, especially on 'Love Don't Live Here', offers a more intimate side of Starks. This reissue brings out the full range of the album's soulful grooves and cinematic narrative. Whether revisiting 36 Seasons for its narrative or its production, this anniversary edition invites both new listeners and longtime fans to experience it in a fresh, vivid light.

Review: Ghostface Killah, legendary Wu-Tang Clan member, invites us to relive the cinematic brilliance of 36 Seasons, his tenth studio album and a conceptual death blow. The record chronicles the journey of Tony Starks (not an uncoincidental Iron Man reference), whose return to Staten Island after nine years, after a lengthy stint in the slammer, finds him only a further embroilment in the seedy underworlds and ganglands of New York. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the album is reissued here in special editions and with exclusive bonuses, including an original graphic novel booklet and poster, diving deeper into a gripping saga of personal redemption and street resilience.

Review: Reconnecting through their shared musical heritages, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson present What Did the Blackbird Say To The Crow, a mesmerising collection of fiddle and banjo tunes tied to North Carolina's many oral and digital traditions. After their late mentor Joe Thompson bequeathed them a trove of recordings to work with, the already esteemed, torch-bearing duo breathe new life into 18 handpicked rethinks and honorific originals, some sung, others purely instrumental. Recorded outdoors at sites meaningful to Thompson and Baker, their sessions were joined by the rare, overlapping calls of two cicada broods, unheard together since 1803. Giddens calls it "music made for your community's enjoyment and for dancing."

Review: Originally released in 1981 via Bronze Records, Hit & Run would serve as the sophomore full-length from London's Girlschool. Reaching No. 5 in the UK Albums Chart with the title-track charting at No. 32 in the UK singles, the album was the band's biggest success, even landing them an obligatory mime performance on Top Of the Pops. Returning to London's Jackson's Studios to work with producer Vic Maile, who handled desk duties on their 1980 debut Demolition, the project saw the group ramp up their speed and melody, ultimately cementing their place as somewhat retrospectively overlooked pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWBHM). Reissued or rather "revisited" for Record Store Day 2025, this lush, limited red wax pressing features cuts such as the iconic opening banger 'C'mon Let's Go', which appeared in the Gemini Award winning 2005 documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, as well as their much adored rendition of ZZ Top's 'Tush'.

Review: Roots Natty offers a treasure trove of rare tracks from one of reggae's favourite trios, The Gladiators. Recorded during the genre's formative golden era, from 1977 to 1979, the period proved fruitful for those in the orbit of reggae giants like Culture and Burning Spear, The Gladiators following among them. This battle-scorn group - Albert Griffiths, Clinton Fearon, Gallimore Sutherland, et al. - would wield piercing arrangements in reggae stadia from soundclashes to Kingston studios, complementing penetratively deep lyrics with sharper productions; long-tanged beats, atomic, needle-point drum transients. The majority of the tracks on Roots Natty are rare Jamaican singles, mixing rawer, heavier, dub-fusions than their Western-readied album counterparts. Originally released in limited quantities in Jamaica, these ones have been carefully remastered, preserving a relatively authentic energy.

Review: Seattle-raised, New York-based singer and pianist Eliana Glass releases one of the most arresting debuts of the year, finding her own nuanced style after years training as a jazz vocalist and being in steeped in records by Nina Simone. Glass' love of more indie influences, such the ethereal Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins means she fuses technical excellence with a more emotional led timbre that, in turn, brings you closer to her soul. 'On The Way Down' is a great place to start as it's a stunning marriage of piano and vocal but when she just plays piano the hairs stand on the back of your neck, too. Check out 'Song for Emahoy' and try not to cry.

Review: Lotti Golden's debut is a fearless dive into the chaotic, electric world of late-60s New York, where countercultural misfits and street prophets populate her genre-warping narratives. Opener 'Motor-Cycle Michael' sets the pace with its freewheeling energy, while 'Gonna Fay's' drifts into bluesy psychedelia. The sprawling 'A Lot Like Lucifer (Celia Said Long Time Loser)' shifts between swaggering rock and theatrical storytelling, mirroring the unpredictability of its characters. 'Who Are Your Friends' leans into funk-driven introspection, while 'Get Together (With Yourself)' and 'You Can Find Him' push her vision further, blending soul and gospel-inflected harmonies. Golden's distinctive approach, combining raw honesty with a complex musical palette, firmly establishes her as an artist who reshapes the boundaries of pop and rock. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Golden was drawn to music from an early age, nurtured by her parents' passion for art and culture. At just 16, she caught the attention of Bob Crewe's Saturday Music, signing as a staff writer. But Golden's vision reached beyond writing for othersishe was determined to tell her own story. With vivid lyrics that captured her experiences in New York City, her debut album chronicles youthful defiance, introspection and transformation.

Review: To say there's a meditative quality to Golem Mecanique's third album would be like saying air is something we breathe. The nom de plume of French multi-instrumental Karen Jebane, the album title directly quotes the final comments made by Pier Paolo Pasolini in his last ever interview, given just days before his body was found on an Italian beach after being brutally murdered. "We are all in danger", he quipped. From what, or who, we are still trying to figure out, 50 years on. Siamo Tutti In Pericolo doesn't look to answer the great mystery of what happened to the great filmmaker and auteur. But it does look to feelings of tension, quiet unease, and opaque mystery for its incredibly atmospheric tomes. This is deep dive stuff, reliant on a combination of refrained notes, echoes, and sombre, spiritual voices inviting us to push through into some other state of consciousness. Whether that will shed any light on anything is, of course, the real question we need to answer.

I Said I Love You First is a perfect example of Blanco's signature production style which mixes soft beats with smooth melodies, while Gomez's vocals portray both vulnerability and confidence. The tracks explore themes of love, heartbreak and personal growth while balancing upbeat anthems and introspective ballads. Highlights include the emotionally charged title track and the infectious rhythms of songs like 'I Can't Get Enough.' The chemistry between Blanco and Gomez is palpable here.

Not just a clever name, At Issue takes its title from the Brooklyn venue this incredible album was recorded in, namely Issue Project Room. For those who don't recognise the musicians involved, Kim Gordon is an icon of discordant, white noise-y rock 'n' roll, best known as a member of Sonic Youth - one of the most iconic guitar acts to emerge in the 1980s.

That might be a red herring in this context, though, because at the New York address in question Gordon was joined by legendary blues minimalist maestro, Loren Connors. The result is a hybrid work that's patient, sophisticated, utterly mesmerising and - for want of a better, less fawning word - close to perfection. Profoundly moving, and masterfully arranged, we guarantee this is one for the lifetime honours list.

Review: Grand River's (Aimee Portioli's) fifth studio album (her first after the brilliant In uno spazio immenso, her debut for Caterina Barbieri's label Light-years label) began as an installation in 2022. Having since evolved into multi-channel, 4DSOUND, and stereo formats, the record has bridged every hurdle to live performances it could possibly face. The 36-minute composition is divided into two parts: Portioli recorded various winds and transformed them via layering and pitch adjustments, fashioning the wind itself into an instrument. Going so far as to align the gusts to a 440hz reference and tuning particular instruments to windward passages, Portioli went with the wind, yet still wound up more alive than ever. Wind and synthesizers merge seamlessly, erasing the line between natural and human-made sound; silent until it meets an object, air currents produce an array of tones, from whispers, to roars, to melodies.

Review: A year on from initial release, eternal sunshine remains a powerful and introspective exploration of heartbreak, growth and the aftermath of personal upheaval. As Arianna Grande navigates her Saturn return here, she transforms her very public divorce into an emotional, musically rich concept album. Inspired by the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, she confronts the lingering pain of a breakup with a mix of raw vulnerability and clever humour across tunes that blend her signature r&b sound with new, bold experimentation, including Y2K-inspired tracks like 'the boy is mine.' While her lyrics occasionally lean on familiar phrases, Grande's restraint and vocal artistry shine through and prove the fine singer-songwriter is not done evolving yet.

Although slightly delayed, this is a special tenth-anniversary edition that reminds of its charming mix of pop, r&b and EDM influences. The album is mostly defined by Grande's powerful vocal range and emotional depth while belting out hits like 'Problem,' 'Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart' and 'Break Your Heart Right Back' all of which remain bangers to this day. Plenty of top-tier guests also feature like The Weeknd, ASAP Ferg and Childish Gambino. As a celebration of her breakthrough era, My Everything remains a modern pop milestone.

A dynamic personhood of pop, dance, and club culture compacted into singular singer form, Rose has made a sustained impact so far, be this through her hit collab with TSHA ('Girls'), performing at Glastonbury with Shygirl, or launching her own club night, Rose Presents Gray. True to its name, Louder, Please is a fortissimo statement, Rose stepping into her full artistic identity while still bridging extant worlds of mainstream and underground, and linking collaborators from pop powerhouse Justin Tranter (Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan) to club innovators like Seda Bodega, Uffie, and Alex Metric. "This record is the rave, the ethereal, my friends, and our stories," Rose exults. "It's pop with underground roots, made for the club, the beachianywhere. Just play it LOUD."

Review: Formed in 1981 under the name of Green Jello, before being forced to change it following legal pressure from the actual owners of the Jell-O brand, 1993's Cereal Killer Soundtrack would be the comedy-punk collective's final album with this original moniker before rebranding as Green Jellÿ, with all subsequent reissues (such as this one) featuring the updated (no lawsuit required) name. Originally released as the video-only album movie Cereal Killer, both the film and this subsequent soundtrack would equally go Gold in the US according to the RIAA, while the single 'Three Little Pigs' would become the biggest hit of their career. Spanning over 100 members since their inception, all revolving around lead vocalist and all-around mastermind Bill Manspeaker, the collective are infamous for their juvenile humour, purposefully crude musicianship and chaotic yet theatrical live performances, although they're also noted for being one of the early creative stops for both Maynard James Keenan and Danny Carey, who would both later go on to form Tool.

Having built a steady beatmaking operation initially from Studio Ghibli thematics and other anime associations, the group now continue to turn their hand to originals, furthering your capacity to wind down after many a long, protracted cramming sesh. Review: Michael Grigoni and Pan•American's latest collaboration is a series of contemplative reflections on the isolation, fractures and uncertainties that define today's world. The album delves into the emotional landscape shaped by political divisions, personal solitude, and the lingering aftereffects of the pandemic. Through its fusion of folk, country, bluegrass, and blues elements, paired with a modern, ambient atmosphere, the sound is both rooted in tradition and forward-looking. Tracks like 'Sun Morning Sun' and 'Silver Streams' carry a sense of quiet introspection, while 'Black River Song' and 'Mirage/Afternoon' showcase the duo's ability to merge organic instrumentation with spacious, textured soundscapes. The album's exploration of personal and collective experience creates a reflective space, asking listeners to pause and engage with the complexities of modern life. A musical journey that speaks to the heart of the American experience, offering an emotional response to an uncertain future.

The record now sits up there as one of the rarest and most desirable albums from the Cuban musical canon as it is such a sublime fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, funk and disco. The musicianship throughout is exceptional with mesmeric synths and evocative horn solos all tethered to the sort of grooves that will either chill you out or heat you up depending on the setting.

'Woodstock's Medley', features pianist David Benoit with original Guaraldi sidemen Seward McCain (bass) and Mike Clark (drums), recorded fifty years later at the same Hyde Street studio in San Francisco. Guaraldi's score, with its elegant title theme, playful take on Beethoven and the infectious 'Woodstock's Dream', is something for all listeners. Prominent ambient and experimental artists such as Hollie Kenniff, Rafael Anton Irisarri and Pole all show their class while newer names like Abul Mogard smears synths into a misty wonder on 'Scope', Galan/Vogt layer in angelic vocal tones to 'Valenz' and Leandro Fresco brings a lightness of touch that fills with optimism on opener 'Apastron. Guentner and Spieth themselves provide two alternate versions of their originals that bring new emotional and sonic depth.

Review: Gunna's Wunna's chart-topping sophomore album was originally released in 2020. This Record Store Day it marks its fifth anniversary with a deluxe reissue celebrating its commercial and cultural impact long after it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and cemented Gunna as a defining voice in melodic trap. The project features standout collaborations with big-name peers such as Young Thug, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch and Travis Scott, while the deluxe edition adds Future, NAV and Lil Uzi Vert. Hits like 'Skybox,' 'Wunna' and 'Dollaz On My Head' are perfect examples of Gunna's smooth flow and atmospheric production and this edition helps reaffirm him as a core part of modern hip-hop's evolution.

Review: Mille Plateaux and Raster hero Andreas Tilliander meets Fire! Orchestra's Goran Kajfes somewhere deep - and we mean DEEP - in the jazz cosmos. The farthest reaches of a universe far, far away, but one that still seems to understand how joyful vast can sound when pierced by the haunting yet strangely alluring sound of brass. But simply defining this as jazz misses a point, then throws us well beyond the pale. In Cmin would be nothing without the electronic tricks and gadgetry that first made us feel as though we'd space-walked off the edge of the known galaxy, out past the Milky Way's stardust. Echoes, tape delays, things that add mood and timbre without necessarily shouting their presence. There's magic at work here. And, contrary to the 21st Century's obsession with under-the-hood, not knowing the how is the reason why you want this.

Review: "One might thus regard the Welsh rarebit as a Machine in which a process is applied to the conditioning and perception of the world of bread and cheese." Suffice to say, John White might not have had the same ideas about what constitutes Machine Music back in 1976 as you do today. This is also the first time we've ever managed to get a reference to Welsh rarebit into the first line of writing about a record, so everyone is learning something today. "The Machines" White refers to are the individual tracks themselves, all recorded between 1967 and 1972 and all comprising different combinations of a thing. Six pairs of "bass melody instruments" made 'Autumn Countdown Machine', different permutations of "the articulations 'ging, gang, gong, gung, ho!'" comprise 'Jews Harp Machine'. And 'Son of Gothic Chord' is crafted from the sequential chord progression of four keyboard players, spanning an octave. Conceptual experimental and wildly imaginative stuff on the borderline of electronica, abstract, mathematical and something otherworldly.
