Fat Joe - "What's Luv" (feat Ashanti) (4:26)
Nelly - "Hot In Herre" (3:58)
Review: Kiss Klassics have been producing some high-quality promo double singles for a while now, this double headliner of Nelly and Fat Joe being the eighth instalment in their archival series. Side A was the runaway standout from New York rap legend Fat Joe's 2001 titanic-sized album 'Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.)', 'Whats Luv' with the one and only Ashanti. This marked Ashanti's debut year as an artist, the Tina Turner sample hook becoming the soundtrack of the block party and becoming one of the biggest songs of 2002. Side B needs no introduction. "It's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes". No matter what you think of Nelly, 'Hot in Herre' continues to have the world in a chokehold over 20 years later.

What A Time (2:52)
92 (3:18)
Million (3:19)
IRL (3:25)
Finish Line (3:11)
Review: Applying what we're all thinking in February 2021 to a kind of Netflix & Chill parody, Fickle Friends are definitely the most thematically fitting band of the month. The Brighton outfit join a long and esteemed list of British pop groups that manage to marry scathing, sarcasm, and bare-boned honesty with sweetness, beauty and universality. Providing you like those keyboards with a No.1-style glitter coating, of course.

Opening on biggest of the lot, 'What A Time', the troupe opt to get the most inescapably positive out of the way first before rolling out real variety. '92' is an icy cool, emotionally scarred (or scarring?) ballad, 'Million' is a stepping, rave-rock workout, with 'IRL' apparently made for sunnier times than the current UK winter, and finale 'Finish Line' closing out on a calming and uplifting tone that's not a million miles away from what some would describe as Balearic chill.

Papi Pacify

Ultraviolet
Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Tu M'as Mise A Genoux (1:48)
Review: Fleur is a firm favourite with fans and now teases the new upcoming album with a new 7" single that is going to resonate well with fans of acts like The Kinks, Holly Golightly and The Remains. The A-side, 'Nous Continuerons a Marcher Ensemble' kicks off with a sharp guitar riff and builds into a catchy, powerful chorus. The B-side, an exclusive to this 7", is 'Tu M'as Mise a Genoux' a fast-paced punk track driven by fuzz bass. Both of them are superb retro indie-pop bangers and have been penned by Mark ten Hoor of The Kryng, and he also recorded the backing tracks for this release.

Review: Calling all locked-groove stickerers, needle twisters, and/or tonearm weight worriers, prepare your ears and needles for a wonderful trove of breakbeat bullion, ripe for the looping and the zealous hunching over. This modern rare groove emulation by Florence, 'Funky Song', lays down a phantasmically funky original breakbeat, fleshed out and swollen unto the most maximal of proportions. Then, don't forget, there's 'Let's Dance', which reworks Jimmy Bo Horne's 'Dance Across The Floor' for a rare and never-edited-before take on the perseverant, provocative hip roller of a track.

Review: This Record Store Day, Fo’ Clips Eclipse’s 1995 G-funk gem 'Just Be Thankful' resurfaces with a limited-edition 7-inch pressing on blue vinyl - the first time that the title cut and 'Can You Feel Me' have been on wax in some 30 years. Originally produced by Compton legend Tweedy Bird Loc, they blend smooth synths, soulful hooks and streetwise lyricism that epitomises the West Coast sound. 'Be Thankful' notably samples William DeVaughn’s 1974 classic to add a nostalgic touch and confirm the tune as a real bit of cult classic hip-hop history that remains influential decades later.

Review: This release delivers a nostalgic nod to classic hip-hop with its two tracks, both reflecting different eras of the genre. Side A, featuring Def Jef and Grandmaster Caz, revives the spirit of 80s park jams with a laid-back yet funky vibe. Fokis's production and DJ Grouch's cuts make this a true ode to old-school hip-hop, brimming with energy and authenticity. On the flip, 'Let's Be Clear' teams up with Staten Island's UMC's for a 90s-inspired posse cut, with Pro.Grade's uptempo production and rapid-fire rhymes delivering a dose of lyrical firepower. A solid release for hip-hop enthusiasts.

Love Is A House (radio version) (4:22)
Review: A timeless gem from the mid-80s, this ballad is a magical slow jam of its era with a soulful touch that remains irresistible. Produced and written by the legendary duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the song features their unparalleled ability to craft heartfelt melodies and lush arrangements. Its delicate piano-driven sound and tender vocal delivery immediately connect, making it an enduring favorite. Initially featured in the movie Krush Groove, the track quickly outshone its cinematic origins, climbing to number four on the r&b charts and breaking into the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. It introduced the group to a wider audience, transcending their early hip-hop and pre-new jack swing roots. Now released on heart-shaped vinyl, this edition feels like a perfect tribute to a song that's all about emotion and connection.

It features four short and superbly sweet tunes of autumnal instruemtals that will have you wanting to snuggle up by a fire and gaze at their delicate melodies and deep cut beats. The vibe is laid-back and melodic as pianos float by over warped synths and pensive groove worm their way deep into your cerebral cortex. The track details Ocean's memories of his youth and a time when someone close to him died - someone who had taught him lessons that stayed with him - and so naturally the theme of mortality features a lot. C K - E O M (4:25)
B S - K I G (4:26)
Review: 'Most Wanted Hip-Hop' is exactly what it says on the tin, offering two high-quality versions of hard-to-find and poorly ripped 90s rap tracks from the golden era. Ronnie Frazzle himself is undertaking work of the utmost importance, restoring and maintaining a physical archive of musical greatness - this being the follow-up to the 2022 disc 'The Doom Sessions', featuring a mix of MF DOOM tracks. Side A is Citizen Kane's 1997 track 'Elements of Mind (Black Rain Remix)', which can't be streamed currently so you are forced to either have it in your collection or scour YouTube for a rip. Sampling their 1996 cut 'Black Rain', Erf's production on this is like butter on a slope for the Canadian duo to slide straight down with these effortless flows. Side B cuts a little deeper, a high-quality pressing of Big Squig's 1995 hit 'Keep it Going', a combination of a Tribe Called Quest interpolation and a 1971 organ jazz number by Isaac Hayes.

Review: Two tracks off the legendary 1993 tape-only release 'The Rhyme Wrecka' EP by Manchester hip-hop Group Freakin' Inglish, featuring Red Venom, on vinyl for the first time. This is a raucous Britcore gemstone, and an important window into a style that should be known to many more hip-hop enjoyers than most mainstream vernacular histories have allowed thus far. Seguing through the interweaving, but toothy, flows of Venom, alongside crewmates Eric-T and Yozzer, using the half-American accents informed by the predominance of gangsta rap at the time, this is still a killer record with a distinctly Northern - Salford to be precise - sound. 'Wrecka' is an apt description indeed.

Review: The seventh in this series of 7" singles is by Bristol and Avon's Kinlaw and Franco Franco and it is a rare mix of sounds with R&B, Italian rap and twisted basslines all defining the tracks. 'Crocs On The Plough' is industrial and experimental in its production - earth-shattering bass, police sirens, and soot-black synths, but background chords bring light as the vocals are delivered with guttural rawness. On the flip, the OSVMVSM version slows things right down to a crawl and the distorted synths and crunchy textures take on even more otherworld character.

Review: Young Turks clearly believe that Tahlilah Barnett, formerly known as Twigs (hence the FKA Twigs pseudonym) is a star in the making. They plucked her from obscurity last year and have since released a number of highly regarded singles. This debut album expands on her EPs to date, showcasing her woozy, intricate take on post-R&B. Naturally, her vocals - fragile and evocative, sounding not unlike Kate Bush on occasions - take centre stage, riding a bed of layered-up head-nodding rhythms, post dubstep grooves, trip-hop soundscapes, fizzing electronics and bubbling synthesizers. It's an intoxicating brew, all told, and one that delivers further proof of Barnett's immense potential.

Review: A total departure from her last album Magdalene, Grammy-nominated British multidisciplinary artist FKA Twigs is firing on all cylinders on Eusexua. The slogan "Eusexua is a practice. Eusexua is a state of being. Eusexua is the pinnacle of human existence" can be found everywhere online and in London right now, even sprayed onto the pavement in places - what Eusexua actually is though is anyone's guess, which is half the fun I suppose. While 2019's Magdalene was a heartwrenching collection of string-led ballads covering extremely morbid topics, with the sensational and fun 'Caprisongs' in 2022 bridging the five year gap, Eusexua is going all in on techno sensibilities, helmed by Koreless, Two Shell and a host of other high-class beatmakers. The title track, released in tandem with a teaser for 'Drums of Death', is an Opus III style trance/techno slow-burn that erupts into a thumping bassline towards the hindlegs of the song. Twigs seems to be styling herself predominantly after Kirsty Hawkshaw during the 'Mind Fruit' era, both in the bold choices of hair and going so far as to cover 'It's A Fine Day' at a Vogue Word event. Garnering a cultlike status, Eusexua is a blend of eclectic influences with the finest talent at hand working on it, tied together with Twigs' personal experiences living in Prague and falling in love with an underground techno scene without borders. The only question remaining, really, is what does Eusexua mean to you?

Review: It's rare that an artist is able to craft a sound so unique that it feels like it's pulling from a completely different world. FKA twigs does just that on this release, where the beats are dark and hypnotic, underscored by her ethereal voice that somehow cuts through with precision. There's a cinematic quality to the production, a sense of space that makes each moment feel significant. It's both jarring and beautiful, her experimental approach pushing boundaries without ever feeling out of place.

Review: FKA twigs delivers Eusexua, her latest and hotly anticipated new album, and the latest to follow 2022's Caprisongs. A strong and determined directional shift away from Caprisongs' cutesy sensibility (we see it as no surprise that her last album was released under Atlantis, while Eusexua comes via home slices on her home turf, Young), Eusexua hears the artist formerly known as twigs take up a futuristic grey, suited, officiated and incorporated style, informed by a roundabout notion of "eusexua", her own coinage: "a feeling of momentary transcendence often evoked by art, music, sex, and unity." Themes of disconnected embodiment run rampant throughout the album, showing no signs of ambivalence where others might flinch in the face of greyness or techno-uniformity. Twigs' vision reclaims abundant but still currently dubious themes of hard work, grist and prosthesis, and as ever resounds in palates of glistening, glossy mecha-r&b, inheriting Bjorkish chameleonics and contrasting said spikiness with no less impassioned tales of her enjoying the underground techno scene in Prague, among other sources of inspiration.

Review: Florence Welch's globe-straddlingly successful epic-pop project has made its name largely through no-holds-barred emotion and rapturous melodrama, and although this third album has largely been trumpeted as a return to a more stripped-down and less over-the-top approach, long-term fans of the couture-clad siren needn't worry too much. 'How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful' remains true to her heart-on-sleeve approach and the cinematic splendour she's made her trademark. Crucially, even beneath the orchestral arrangements and the life-or-death vocal declamations, the songs on this record shone through as memorable and emotive enough to withstand the level of ornamentation around them, and fit to have Florence's fearsome pipes send them skyward.

Review: Warner Records has put together this special reissue of The Rising Tied as a limited-edition apple-red double album which includes four bonus cuts that are making their vinyl debut. It first landed in 2005 from Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and marked his first foray into solo hip-hop production. The album went platinum and is packed with big-name collaborations with plenty of the scene's biggest names sun as Como as well as pop heroes like John Legend. Those bonus tracks are 'Be Somebody,' 'There They Go,' and 'The Hard Way' which were on CD back in 2005 and 'Welcome' which was a standalone single in 2015.

Produced by frontman Mark Foster alongside bandmate Isom Innis, with additional contributions from Paul Epworth, Jack PeNate, Chrome Sparks, and Asa Taccone, the album was crafted in studios across London and Los Angeles, including the iconic Studio Three at East West Studios, where The Beach Boys recorded Pet Sounds. Paradise State of Mind features standout tracks like 'Chasing Low Vibrations,' 'Take Me Back,' and the infectious lead single 'Lost In Space,' blending elements of psychedelia, space-age sounds, 80s anthems and dramatic disco strings. The track's official music video, directed by award-winning filmmaker Rupert Holler, has already made waves online.

Review: English former glamour model and pop-dance singer of the 1980s, Samantha was one of the main faces of pop driven dance music in the decade. Her debut album marked her transition from a famous British Page 3 model to a pop icon with global appeal, which included a humungous and very vociferous following in India of all places. The album blends catchy 80s pop-rock, with its title track 'Touch Me( I Want Your Body' leading the charge, showing her sultry, bold stage presence. Fox's vocal performance stands out for its authenticity and commitment. The album's second track, 'I'm All You Need', highlights Fox's ability to sing about empathy and romantic devotion, capturing the complexity of human connection. 'Hold On Tight', with its rockabilly feel, is different than most songs in Fox's discography, while 'Do Ya Do Ya (Wanna Please Me)' embraces 80s pop-rock with powerful, seductive lyrics. 'Baby I'm Lost for Words' explores the feeling of awe when meeting a crush, and 'It's Only Love' gives a soulful nod to Motown. 'He's Got Sex' wraps up the album with a bold, provocative theme, rounding off Touch Me as a collection of catchy, empowering anthems.

Review: 2006 was a very different time in rock 'n' roll. We'd cast off the Britpop and nu metal of the previous century's finale and millennium turn, and things had moved onto sounds that were far more sentimental, sometimes self-pitying and always hyper-emotional. This was true both of the rise of emo and hardcore resurgence, and the more chart (and advert)-friendly stuff coming from the likes of Keane and Coldplay. Over in the US, The Fray were looking to secure membership to that Closer-soundtrack worthy club and on their debut LP made a strong case for it. How To Save A Life features a number of powerful tracks, from the titular lead single to the piano-vocal showstopper, 'Hundred'. Moving enough to become the best selling digital album of all time, at the time (only trumped by Eminem's Recovery in 2010), here it is in physical form.

Review: Fred Again's latest album Actual Life 3: January 1 - September 9 2022 is the third installment in a series of albums by the British artist which has received positive reviews from music critics and been praised for its experimental sound and emotional depth. The LP features songs that document his personal experiences and thoughts over a period of time. His musical style can be described as a blend of electronic, dance and pop with introspective and emotive lyrics, often incorporating samples from various sources, including personal recordings to create a unique and eclectic sound. Review: Like many of us, Fred Again keeps a diary. But rather than writing in a journal, pager or Notes app, his diary takes the unusual form of an intensely personal album series, 'Actual Life'. The second instillment in the series hears him once again weave through Londonized R&B, future garage and pop-electronic, charting an 8-month period looking into an intensely difficult period of his life, in which the artist was confronted with a complex case of grief.

Review: Is there any producer who has broken through as spectacular and made such an impressive mark in the last year than British producer Fred Gibson aka Fred Again? As well as producing plenty of high profile projects for other artists, his own diary-like albums have brought plenty of freshness to dance music. This was the first of them, back in April 2021, at the time an outlet for him to explore "a year of finding love and mourning its loss".

Review: Fred Again seems to be one of the most talked about artists of the year. Part of that centers around the astonishing Boiler Room set he served up, but also plenty of credit is due for the music he makes. A lot of that is summed up here on Actual Life 3, the third installment of his series after the previous two back in 2021 and recent collabs with the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Future. It shows off his mastery of a range of different sounds and scenes across 13 fun and fresh tunes that are backed with emotive beats and catchy hooks as well as some standout vocals.

For this new record on Mutual Intentions outta Norway he works with Sraw to hypnotic effect. Right from the off, the dusty vibes and lo-fi aesthetic is heartwarming and a perfectly laid back tonic to busy modern lives. Guess like Planet Asia & Waz, Pink Siifu and Blu November add their own character to this spaced-out and stoned late-night listening companion. It might be one of Fred's best yet.

The Canadian-Portuguese singer-songwriter stunned audiences with her breakout single 'I'm Like a Bird,' a dreamy, folk-infused pop anthem that soared to the top of the charts. Furtado's lyrical introspection and emotional delivery, combined with the production talents of Gerald Eaton and Brian West, created an album filled with heartfelt melodies and infectious rhythms. Tracks like 'Turn Off The Light' and 'On The Radio (Remember the Days)' further exhibit her versatility and knack for catchy hooks. Whoa, Nelly! is not only a commercial success but also a creative triumph, blending genres and showcasing Furtado's unique artistry. Now, enjoy the album reissued on beautiful vinyl.

This was his third full length and its packed with bumping and ice cold trap beats and a starkly futuristic yet dystopian sound. Reissued on teal vinyl for this year's Record Store Day it features all the original tracks. Review: Future and Metro Boomin's double-disc sequel, We Still Don't Trust You, is a revitalised exploration of their dynamic, pushing familiar ground into brighter and sappier spaces. Future swings between flexing his status and indulging in tear-soaked reflections, notably in tracks like 'One Big Family' and 'Mile High Memories.' Metro Boomin balances his brooding, maximalist beats with polished, r&b-inflected production, as heard on the synth-pop title track and the smooth 'All to Myself.' While the album is nearly 30 minutes more than its predecessor, Future and Metro shine when they venture out of their comfort zones, making the music both prettiest and nastiest. Standout moments, such as Kendrick Lamar's verse on 'Like That,' inject a sense of animosity and excitement. Overall, We Still Don't Trust You is an adventurous AAA rap album, focusing on heartbreak more than feuds.

Review: Contemporary American stars rapper Future and record producer Metro Boomin make for a great combination, as they proved with their debut collaboration. We Still Don't Trust You is their second such work and is an even more impressive work with guest appearances from the likes of the Weeknd, Chris Brown, Brownstone, Ty Dolla Sign, J. Cole, Lil Baby, and ASAP Rocky. It's a double album with the first half being r&b-centric while disc two leans more into hip hop- and trap-focused beats with plenty of memorable tracks.

Review: When asked in a 2023 interview why he hadn't contributed any production work to long-time collaborator Future's 2022 ninth full-length I Never Liked You, tireless hip-hop producer Metro Boomin revealed that he was aiming to save his beats for a potential collaborative album, which now appears to have been the plan all along. Marrying the aquatic, lysergic production style Boomin has helped to majorly popularise with Future's hazy, xanned out delivery, the duo deliver a trap opus weaving the most accessible and underground facets of the genre into one malleable set of fluid bangers, while the guest feature section boasts a who's-who of modern day hip-hop acts such as The Weeknd, Rick Ross, Playboi Carti, Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar. The project also would eventually be retconned as part one in their ongoing collaboration series with the follow up to We Still Don't Trust you dropping only three weeks later.
