Review: DJ Mitsu The Beats summons up a mellow, jazz-tinged spin on Norah Jones' early classic 'Sunrise', following a plucky piano-studio sesh shared with Takumi Kaneko of Cro-Magnon. After a cannonballing digital release, the "instrumental chill" track now takes shape as a 7" single, suturing Mitsu's laidback bop to Kaneko's smooth, sunspot piano lines. Review: American label Deep Bow makes a notable vinyl debut with this heavyweight 10" featuring King Stanley and Prince Jamo, both voicing over a thunderous riddim crafted by producer Dub Sev?. This roots-driven slab stars with King Stanley's passionate cries over sleek drums with shiny digital synths and neat guitar licks. It stays true to the deep, meditative spirit of sound system culture and becomes much more roomy and spaced out in the hands of Dub Seva. Prince Jamo's 'Joke' has a cleaner vocal and some natty keys, and also gets dubbed out by Dub Seva. A strong introduction from Deep Bow that showcases talent from both sides of the Atlantic.

Review: Rock A Shaka continue to wring out their apparently exclusive tenancy of Prince Buster's so far unissued reggae and rocksteady works, this time dropping a fresh 7" one with the instrumentalist Determinations on dubbing duties, 'Ten Steps Ahead'. Buster's final recording before he died initially went by the name 'One Step Beyond', and it has here been renamed in requiem, perhaps to differentiate it from the repopularised Madness cover. Lodged behind the vault door for years, you can be sure that Rock A Shaka thanked their lucky stars when they re-found it: "why must I suffer so much on this land?" Buster's voice is unusually lonesome and spectral, revealing in the late artist a rarely obviated forlornness.

Review: Virginia-raised singer Lucy Dacus' profile has been overshadowed by the gargantuan success of Boygenius bandmate Phoebe Bridgers, but this sounds like the album that's going to change all that overnight. The single 'Ankle' is a case in point: the string-laden number is a hypnotic, emotionally charged epic full of temperature-raising double-entendres. Elsewhere, on the tender ballad 'Limerence', Dacus sounds timeless, like we're in the company of a songwriter who's going to be around doing this music making thing for the rest of her life. An extraordinary talent.

Review: In 1995, Portland hipsters The Dandy Warhols made tentative steps towards gatecrashing the mainstream by signing a major record deal with Capitol Records after their indie debut Dandys Rule OK caught their attention. But it wasn't until this album, their second on a major label though, that things really started to kick off for the Courtney Taylor-Talor fronted icons. And it's easy to see why it was such a hit, Dandys could conjure pure beauty with their psychedelic indie pop melodies. The single that became their definitive hit and likely haunts them to this day is 'Bohemian Like You, who some of you will remember from that Vodaphone advert. But it's an album that doesn't rely on a single hit, it's one to whack on, go through the looking glass and see the world through their artfully fantastical vision.

Review: Following on from 2021's Motorheart, Lowestoft 21st century hard rockers The Darkness return with their eighth full-length studio LP, the absurdly titled, very British - Dreams On Toast. While for the casual listener who remembers the band's explosive 2003 debut Permission To Land and the bevvy of major singles that record produced such as 'Growing On Me' and 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love', have likely long allowed the band to dissipate into the ether of their musical memory banks, those who still like their rock cheesy, camp and packed to the brim with Slade-style fret mangling solos, will find so much to crunch on here with bangers such as 'Rock and Roll Party Cowboy' and 'I Hate Myself' still delivering the "What year is it?!" retro-swagger that's becoming more difficult to replicate with each passing year. It also helps that frontman/primary songwriter Justin Hawkins has seemingly injected a booster shot into his own project thanks largely to his successful YouTube channel Justin Hawkins Rides Again, while for easter egg time, actor Stephen Dorff (known for is roles as the villain in the first Wesley Snipes Blade film as well as True Detective) makes a spoken-word appearance on the closer 'Weekend In Rome'.

Sony were easily knocked off their high horse, however, when the band later signed with Atlantic, after which the album would top the US Albums Chart, peaking at number two. Review: Here's a timely re-issue that reminds us all just how quickly time flies. Already alternative rap OGs by the time this first saw the light of day back in 2004, De La Soul brought together the hip-hop elite to collaborate on their seventh studio album. Featuring cameos and production from the likes of J Dilla, Madlib, 9th Wonder, Supa Dave West, and MF Doom, the LP was met with critical acclaim when released and continues to stand up nearly 20 years later. Nostalgic yet forward-thinking, the well-formed album includes plenty of high points. 'Shopping Bags' offers a cautionary tale flow over dusty beats with a mightily hooky chorus, 'Rock Co.Kane Flow' demonstrates the group's ability to evolve with the changing times, while the feel-good flex of the title track is a standout, hands-in-the-air classic.

Review: Decca and CAM Sugar present the complete edition of Francois de Roubaix's historic La Scoumoune score, contracting unreleased tracks, demos, and alternate takes. The 1970 thriller, directed by Jose Giovanni and starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, witnesses a small-time crook entangle himself in a torrid torsion of crime and fate, themes mirrored in de Roubaix's palpating score. Roubaix blended barrel organs, synths and unconventional sounds like rattles and springs, inculcating in the viewer the thrill of the chase, while the formal strategy to use entirely different instruments for each track went on to nail its touchstone status. Now a well of versatility, it comes regularly sampled in hip-hop and electronica; remixes by Alessandro Baldessari, Jean-Michel Bernard, and Benjamin de Roubaix, doing justice to a record whose very being seems to beg out loud for the remixing.
