Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Kuvio (12" version) (6:02)
Scene 1 (original version Of Shk Movie Soundtrack Scene 1) (9:02)
Review: A minimalist masterpiece, this 12" captures the raw, uncompromising spirit of the early days of Sahko, the Finnish label which brought us Pan(a)sonic, Jimi Tenor and many other greats. On Side-1, 'Kuvio' pulses with hypnotic precision, its sparse yet resonant bleep pattern unfolding with a mechanical elegance that defines the label's aesthetic. Stripped to its essential elements, it's a study in restraintievery kick, every frequency shift carefully placed for maximum impact. Side-2 ventures into more atmospheric terrain, offering an extended take on an excerpt from the Sahko Movie soundtrack. Dubby electro textures intertwine with eerie space-age sonics, creating a sense of vastness and isolation. There's a weightless quality to it, as if floating in some abandoned industrial zone, the echoes of machines long dormant still humming in the background. Originally from the Metri album, 'Kuvio' distills the essence of its eraiwhere techno, ambient and experimental electronics blurred into something both cerebral and deeply physical. It remains a timeless document of innovation, showcasing a singular vision that continues to influence artists across genres. Essential listening for those who appreciate the purity of sound design and the art of reduction.

Review: Artificial Owl Recordings welcomes aboard New Yorkers Satoshi Tomiie and Naotake Gunji for the label's fifth release; a recording of their collaborative A_A project and live show, which first came to light at the Fridman Gallery in Manhattan. A_A, an ongoing audio project, explores the visceral tension between floor-centric ambient electronica and improvised sound/audio performance. Here, found and object-activated sounds fire a collective dub trigger, producing a distinctly somatic regrounding across five original works.

Kulmamomentti (Jimi Tenor edit) (5:11)
Kulmamomentti (Timo Kaukolampi edit dub) (6:37)
Review: A aka Mika Vainio's 'Fermionit' is a significant release from the late Finnish producer, who passed away in 2017. Originally featured in a Belgium Detuned 6x12 boxset just before his death, the track received critical acclaim from collectors and fans. Now, it returns to Mika's own Sahko label for a well-deserved 12" release. 'Fermionit' embodies the essence of Finnish techno with its minimalistic, cold and stark sound. The track's passive-aggressive edge showcases Vainio's signature style, blending raw, unfiltered textures with a profound sense of depth. This release not only honors Vainio's legacy but also offers a chance for new listeners to experience the pure DNA of Finnish techno. An essential listen for fans of minimalist and avant-garde electronic music.

Mathys Lenne - "Error" (5:14)
Review: Welcome to the Slippery Yard, a new label out of Spain which is sure to turn heads with this fine first release - a psychedelic blend of techno from various artists. A Morgan's 'Air' is urgent and cosmic a la Jeff Mills, Dc11's 'It's All An Act' layers up deft synth details with sleek linear rhythms and Judy's 'Bide Luzea' is a hurried, pulsing, late-night mental techno trip. A further deep and heady trio of tunes features on the B-side with Bassywax's sub-aquatic sound world on 'Amona Left Us Overnight' taking the headlines for us.

RIYL Failures (9:32)
Review: While the name may be new, A New Line (Related) is supposedly the work of an already established musician, although Kimochi was never a label that cared about hype. The music stands just fine on its own, digging into the kind of dusty and dusky house and techno formations that the label has forged its hand-sprayed identity on. There's plenty of ambient techno twirls to be enjoyed on the likes of "Dancing On Soft Borders", while the beats melt away entirely on "After A Short Illness" and grandiose EP closer "RIYL Failures". Once again Kimochi comes up with the kind of meaningful variations on the 4/4 framework that keep our record bags full and our souls enriched.

Review: Knotweed welcomes back a label regular in A Thousand Details here and he once again delves deep into groovy machine funk. His high-impact sound is always intense but is never short on style. 'Hammersmith Conjunction' is up first and races out of the blocks on some surging, serene and Detroit-style techno. 'Ashbourne Grove' is a more heads-down affair for the dark of the night with paranoid synth patterns looping tightly over the cantering drums. 'Colorious' ups the ante with bristling percussive loops and 'Pimlico Astor' shuts down with some edginess that will keep you on your toes.

Meringueatang (7:12)
Review: A Trifle Too Far, the collaboration between Essex natives Simon Ward and Tony Grimley, crafted this forward-thinking duo of tracks, inspired by their explorations of the acid house scene and rave culture. Catch Your Ear and Meringueatang embody the innovative spirit of early 90s prog-house. Engineered by Evren Omer of Strategy Records and Matt Clayden of X-Gate Records, respectively, these tracks remain a rare and exhilarating find. Mint Condition is reviving the essence of classic house and techno with their latest reissue: the elusive 1992 EP 'Catch Your Ear/Meringueatang' from A Trifle Too Far. This release is a thrilling addition for collectors and DJs, rekindling the excitement of a bygone era.

Rei III (8:41)
Review: A_X opts for electro at 140bpm on this subdued new one, harkening to a pre-Millennium era when broken beat, electro, drum n' bass and proto-dubstep all coalesced into one nice primordial stew. 'Ceramic City' whirls and sloshes about, hardly differentiating between drums and synth, and basking in pads that sound not far off from whale song. 'Rei III', meanwhile, goes weird halftime, piercing the ears with echoic hi-hats and brittle glass sonics. Music for headrushy halls of mirrors.

Gone Full Circle (7:14)
Review: Oslo's A:G has been doing his thing successfully for some time, side-stepping expectations of music from his home city by delivering music that's frequently heavier and more mind-mangling. Here the Norwegian delivers the debut release of a new label, Nocturnal Expeditions, beginning with the restless acid lines, deep bass, vintage progressive house motifs and semi-bleeping lead lines of 'Beyond The Veil'. He opts for more stomping beats and LFO-inspired bass on the similarly psychedelic 'Patient Paradox', before reaching for rave piano stabs on the nostalgic excellence of 'First of 22'. Best of all, though, is closing cut 'Gone Full Circle', where ethereal melodiesm spacey pads and squelchy TB-303 tweaks ride a psychedelic house groove.

A2 - "Year 2010" (5:54)
A2 - "Waldawf" (6:25)
Stopouts - "Stopping Around" (6:12)
Review: Mass turns its attention to the cult OG tech house crew orbiting An Alien Recordings and names like A2 and Stopouts. There are a mixture of heads involved in these projects tracking back to the late 90s, amongst them the late Andy Panayi aka A2 and Rob Collman, Panayi's partner in Stopouts. You can instantly hear why some of these tracks would be coveted by the modern minimal and tech house crew, given the stripped back, deep-trucking quality to these tunes. 'No Streets Here' has a sultry, late morning mood, while 'Year 2010' more than delivers as a melodious acid workout with that unmistakable 90s flavour. It's the dubby delights of A2's 'Waldawf' which are the standout here, sporting a timeless quality which holds just as much weight in the current scene.

Sub Spark (6:01)
Review: Aa Sudd shows off a grasp of heady rhythm like few others here on a new EP for Midgar. Fusing dub, techno, minimalism and stripped-back drum & bass, 'Pselum' is a magnificent opener that is tightly woven and tense yet fluid and hypnotic. It's densely packed with drums, bass and synths and sounds ancient yet futuristic. 'Menodice' is more twitchy as it darts about the stereo field with underlapping bass and skittish claps then 'QPP' is a booming double-time wonk-out. Last of all is a tripped out and hallucinogenic mind fuck that is the sensational 'Sub Spark'. A brilliantly original and well-crafted EP.

Review:  Given its title, you might expect Aaron K's second vinyl outing to be filled with forthright, sub-heavy sleaze. While there's some weighty low-end pressure to be found - especially on the sparse, dubbed-out delights that are 'Superbass 1' and 'Superbass 2' - for the most part the EP delivers blends of atmospheric, analogue deep house and jacking acid house that prioritise mood and melody over significant bass-weight. It's a fusion that works really well throughout, with highlights including the subtle electro influences and deep, spaced-out riffs of 'Transphat', the picturesque, arpeggio-driven melodies of 'Folding Arps', the jaunty deep acid of 'Everyone in the Pool (Filtered Mix)', and the cosmic late night hypnotism of 'Walls'.

The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

Review: Russian techno producer Abdul Raeva returns for 'Age Of Infinity', flaunting the artist's "hyperelastic" wiggly techno style. The eponymous A-sider sounds like gazing into a self-affirming reality tunnel with an unusual level of confidence and glee, while the following 'Alpha Track' does just the same, albeit with ultra-energized "go" samples and robotic synth grunts intstead. The suggestive 'Speed Dance' follows, with amplified bass zaps knocking around the left and rights like fireflies, while the Hard Dub of former Be Told Lies heater 'Mercury' rounds things off with impressive moodiness and largesse.

Sharing production duties on each side, Aber and Kashpitzky bring experience gleaned from prior releases on the likes of CLR, Drumcode, and BPitch Control - dropping clout like bombs - to this ultimate moment, on whose A-side we now hear 'Immersive' fusions of broken beat and far-flung techno atmospheres amount to a tittilating 'Saga'. The B-side's 'Rust' and 'Bazement' are equally as synthetic yet also hear the EP grow increasingly crazed, with the former indulging an entrained trance despite an equally adamant kick-drive, and the latter moving pure tweezy and swirly.

Review: UK artist David Duncan recorded only one EP as Ability II but it is one of those which has become an utter cult classic and much sought-after 12". The story goes that the bassline on this one was so deep the mastering engineer had a problem cutting it. There is no evidence of it on this reissue though - that bassline powers the tune perfectly as the plunging kick drums and dancing synths get you moving your body. Perfectly deployed vocals bring heart-aching soul as this most warm and dubby cut drowns you in timeless deep techno. Next to the gorgeous original mix is an extended dub for even more drawn-out late-night dance floor pleasures.

Review: I9M is back with a new old release - what we mean by that is that this tune was actually first recorded back in 2002 by Ability II (aka David Duncan), but you wouldn't know it from listening. They are still future-sounding cuts from the producer who had forgotten about them for many years but who says that lyrically they are even more relevant now than two decades ago. The drums are dubby, the FX are cosmic and the synths bring sleek ambient flow to the energetic low ends. Outta Attercliffe aka the talented Luca Lozano, alongside associate DJ Steve remixes and ups the dub quotient while slowing the groove a touch. Last of all is a tripped-out Underground Dub Mix full of glistening FX and melon-twisting reverb.

Abduction (5:33)
Wireless Talk (5:24)
Xtra D (6:59)
Pattern Recognition (4:51)
Review: Slapping up-down tech house via techno from Lviv producer AC130. His debut for the Parisian label Griffe records - 'Destination Unknown', which came out last year - now sees a few more copies hit our shelves. We're bowled over by the Todd Terry-like swing on the A, 'Abduction', while the techier, bell-chimingly charming tones of 'Wireless Talk' and 'Xtra D' zap us with surplus energy, leaving us with a boundless motivation to dance by the time the EP's coldwavey sci-fi closer, 'Pattern Recognition', rolls around.

Apex (7:02)
Anaesthesia (4:16)
Learned Behaviour (5:47)
Forella (6:03)
Reorientation (3:20)
Review: Portal ends the year with a delightfully well-crafted and deliciously deep techno long player from Acaera. It opens up in dubbed-out and stripped-back fashion with supple rolling rhythms way down below the most deft of pads. 'Anaesthesia' brings some fizzing static electricity to the mix but the mood remains foggy and bleak in beautiful ways then 'Learned Behaviour' brings a little more thump to the low end but the atmosphere remains sparse. 'Forella' is a dub techno cruiser that floats on airy breaks and 'Reorientation' shuts down with three-plus minutes of eerie ambiance.

Givers & Takers (4:51)
Eat Dirt (4:55)
A Moment Lost (4:44)
3PM (6:44)
Review: Valerie Ace solidifies her rising status in techno with her third vinyl EP, 'Givers & Takers', on her Hardwon imprint. The title track sets an ominous tone with a slow breakbeat and interlocking percussion, building tension before a heavy bass climax. 'Eat Dirt' lives up to its name, switching between breaks and straight sections to pound the floor with relentless intensity. 'A Moment Lost' wastes no time, charging out of the gates with rapidly evolving snares and filtered bass punches driving the track over atmospheric background sounds. The afternoon or afterhours vibe of '3PM' is enhanced by seasick synth layers contrasting against malignant drums, creating a sense of uncertainty. Each of the four tracks offers a hard-hitting techno experience, showcasing Valerie Ace's skill in crafting intense workouts. Givers & Takers confirms her premier place in contemporary techno and this EP is a great example to her ability to push boundaries and keep the energy high on the dancefloor.

Strass & Stress
Cat: SKIN 006. Rel: 29 Feb 24
Taking A Risk (5:03)
Slay (4:58)
Anxious Not Afraid (5:23)
How To Fit In (6:08)
Review: Valerie Ace - great name - returns to Intrepid Skin with her latest EP, Strass & Stress, following a series of well-received releases. Blending hard dance and techno, the Berlin-based producer showcases her signature style on four powerful tracks. With a background in DIY rave culture and a dedication to community-led electronic music, Valerie's sound is a contemporary fusion of genres. 'Taking a Risk' sets the tone with hard kicks and distorted leads, while 'Slay' delivers acid-infused energy. 'Anxious not Afraid' explores a hazier psytrance vibe, and 'How To Fit In' concludes with industrial-inspired chaos. 'Strass & Stress' is a final relentless display of Valerie's artistry.
