Review: Following the tragic passing of frontman Chester Bennington in 2017, many presumed the natural end of nu-metal turned alt rock giants Linkin Park. Rattling their fanbase with news of a resurgence with Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong, as well as new drummer Colin Brittain (replacing Rob Bourdain who opted not to join the reunion), From Zero nods to the band's original moniker of Xero while also ushering in this new era for the group, whereas sonically, the band do their best to simultaneously pay credence to their heavier origins whilst naturally progressing towards their newfound vision. Their first full-length since 2017's pop-oriented One More Light may come as a shock to many devout to the Bennington era, but the earnestness in composition sees a retrospective embracing of nu-metal motifs yet modified and extrapolated to embolden this entirely new compositional framework. Attempting to compare to prior releases is naturally par for the course yet won't do much to alter this new musical trajectory, as From Zero swells with the breath of an entirely fresh project that owes humble countenance to the Linkin Park of yesteryear. At 11 tracks clocking on at just over a half-hour, the mission statement is one of succinct brevity and urgency, but whether it truly fills the Bennington shaped void is down to each unique set of ears.

Review: While Swedish garage-tinged hard rock heroes The Hellacopters made their bombastic return with 2022's excellent Eyes Of Oblivion; their 2008 predecessor Head Off was originally envisioned as the band's swansong project. Review: 1984's Powerslave is often referred to by the members of Iron Maiden as the album that made them "really famous", as the fifth full-length from the iconic metal heroes saw them filling out larger arenas than ever previously imagined, while the World Slavery Tour would ultimately lead to their longest time ever out on the road. Featuring the iconic hit single '2 Minutes to Midnight' as well as the galloping 'Aces High', the album is most noteworthy for its epic near fourteen-minute musical re-telling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner', with the band even confessing to it being their favourite song to play live. Review: Oklahoma City noise-rock/sludge metal merchants Chat Pile caved the underground extreme metal and punk scenes into the skull with 2022's horrific debut full-length God's Country, where industrial-tinged pummelling grooves underpinned frontman Raygun Busch's spoken word/shrieking diatribes centred around the homeless and opioid crises of middle-America. In those two short years, the band have ballooned from relative unknowns to garnering praise from the type of outlets that usually would never even breathe in the toxic air Chat Pile call home, yet all eyes are now set on their Cool World sophomore endeavour, where the narrow scope of their home country has been expanded to lay waste to the utter shameful world that might think it got away from Busch and his cohorts the first time around. Marrying more grunge-laden melodious swagger into their increasingly abrasive tonal heft while throwing venomous barbs in every direction, no one makes it out this world unscathed. Review: Richmond, Virgina theatrical horror-punk legends GWAR initially made their debut in 1988 with their jagged, raw, rough around the edges yet expansive in concept first LP Hell-O! Inspired by likeminded peers in Misfits and Butthole Surfers, the collective sought to herald and praise debauchery, violence, scatological humour and almost every envelope corner worthy of pushing with this feral collection of artsy "of-the-time" scum-rock, taking inspirations from the likes of Pussy Galore and Ween yet also nodding to the snarky avant-punk of Dead Milkmen and Angry Samoans as well as hardcore acts such as Dead Kennedys. While pre-dating the more metallic bombast and expert precision that would come with the band's later material and ascent to monster stardom, efforts were already being made to lay the foundation of the Gwar world building lore, complete with the introduction to their arch nemesis Techno-Destructo.
