Review: Some magical – and ridiculously limited – Prince remix action here, as Athens of the North house band East Coast Love Affair give their take on the Purple One’s 1984 song ’17 Days’ (which, fact fans, originally appeared on the B-side of ‘When Doves Cry’). They’ve done a great job, too, taking Prince’s original vocals and piano and wrapping them around a rolling groove that sits somewhere between disco and the more organic side of deep house. It’s basically a club-ready take that (rightly) treats the late, great musician’s original with due care and reverence. It comes backed by a handy acapella for those who’ve always dreamed about getting busy in the mix with Prince’s wonderful vocals. There are only 200 of these around, so don’t sleep!

Review: Bowie is a new label that says it intends to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past." The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. 'Golden Years' has lovely live drums and meandering guitar licks for some carefree listening, while 'Fame' has a deep cut groove that rises and falls in dramatic fashion with more neat and tidy riffs adding the detail next to the big licks.

Review: Since starting out as a studio engineer in his native Essex back in the late 1990s, Michael Gray has been one of British house music's most prolific producers. In recent years he's spent much of his time reworking and tooling up old disco and boogie hits. He's on that tip again here, putting his spin on Raw Silk's 1982 boogie classic 'Do It To The Music'. Gray delivers three versions, each of which combine familiar elements of the original - the duo's vocals, the squelchy bassline, the swirly effects and colourful synth sounds - with rolling house beats and subtle new musical flourishes. They begin on side A with 'PeeGee870', a fine version of a low-slung, synth-sporting Italian disco chugger from (we think) the turn of the 1980s, before moving on to the eyes closed disco bliss of 'understanding', where heady lead vocals and sweeping orchestration catches the ear. Review: Supernature Disco main man James Greenwood has been using the Semi-Skimmed Edits alias since 2020, serving up a series of high-quality rework EPs packed to the rafters with tasteful, tried-and-tested rearrangements of largely overlooked cuts. He's at it again on volume seven. On the A-side, he delivers a tidy extension and rearrangement of Graffiti's seriously sought-after blue-eyed soul/yacht rock cover of Ned Doheny classic 'Get It Up For Love', emphasising the picturesque wooziness and saucer-eyed warmth ('Down4Love'). He ups the tempo on 'Satisfactory', tidying up a gorgeous and sun-splashed slab of orchestrated disco joy, before doffing a cap to the Unambombers' 'Electrik Souls' series on the quirky and life-affirming disco-funk of 'Jump 4 It', a light-touch re-wire of an early 80s jam by Aretha Franklin.

Review: New York's P-Sol steps up to the PS7 label in soulful form. 'Brooklyn Interlude' opens up with some brilliantly buttery vocal harmonies over a lazy and seductive deep funk and soul groove. The drums have hints of hip-hop and neo-soul and are sure to warm through any Autumnal dancefloor in style. Flip it over and you will find the distinctly festive-sounding 'Sad Party' which has some warming drum breaks and lush feels, swirling wordless vocals and glowing melodies that all give off a rather Christmassy feel. Review: Who knew that the Austrian underground of the 1980s produced some genuinely brilliant - and some would say unlikely - records? Well, Editions Hawara crew members Julian Horn, Jonny Nemetz and Fabio Wolkenstein did - hence this fine, perfectly formed compilation. Starting off with the shuffling, jazz guitar laden sunshine of "Love is a Game' by Crumbs - a genuine blue-eyed soul treat - the trio showcase an enticing blend of proto-Balearic excellence (Will Sanders' 'Secret Love'), utra-deep alternative synth-pop ('Zonenzeit' by Anonym), eccentric electrofunk (Surprise's 'Wow'), German-language boogie badness ('Die Reise' by Appendix), smooth dancefloor jazz-funk (M-Convention's lightly proto-house tinged 'Glaserne Mouern') and big production numbers that offer nods to the early 80s work of Cologne outfit Dunkelziffer (She and the Band's 'Too Much Too Soon').

In fact, leave it to us to do the talking: Netherlands outfit XXX deliver four new disco and new wave edits for their restless eponymous series (don't be fooled, this isn't their 333rd release, though it is their third). Welcoming Pete Blaker, Correlations, Dr. Dunks and AM to the form - and lending them a track title each to their own monikers - every edit here is especially saunified, vapours wafting off the acid thermos; the likes of 'AM' and 'Correlations' are of indeed identifiable banger fodder, though their capacity to shift dancefloors as such is heard not directly, but rather through much haze and vaporous artifact, lending the whole experience a special ambiance.

Review: Contemporary dark disco-dance collective Leng have their fingers in many pies, one of them being the San Francisco Bay Area. Said connection comes to the fore once more on the imprint's latest release, which hears Odin join forces with fellow San Francisco resident Marshall Watson, a long-serving producer, engineer and live performer known globally for his Balearic-minded productions. 'Voyager' is a stultifying and forward-driven track, one whose whirling plucks and funky basses leave the listener with no other choice but to strap in and give in to an imminent whisking-away. The extended Guitar mix on the B-side amps up the splashy tom-tom fills and proffers an extensible bass guitar focus, madding the mix further. Review: Disco Mind is a young but already standout label and now it is back with Feijao Amigo, another must-have EP featuring Brazilian gems expertly reworked by two of Brazil's top edit maestros in Joutro Mundo and Bernardo Pinheiro. Pinheiro kicks off with 'Fogo' which is big on funk and brass and perfect for peak time, while his second cut 'Diga Amor' is a lively rework guaranteed to move you. On the flip, Mundo offers 'Santos Da Guine' which has been sourced from an ultra-rare record and elevated by a subtle touch-up. The EP closes with 'Dia Lindo' which is a collaboration between Joutro Mundo and Pasternak and is full of sunshine, funk and bold hooks.

Review: Dark Entries has assembled a superb collection of covers celebrating 60s garage and soul music by the one and only Patrick Cowley. This LP showcases another side of the great producer's diverse influences, in particular his psychedelic San Francisco roots which can be heard in most tracks. They were mostly written between 1980 and 1982 when he was in prolific form and highlight his virtuosity while paying respects to the music that shaped him. The collection features a reimagined version of Loverde's 'Iko Iko,' a hi-NRG cover of The Doors' '20th Century Fox,' and a haunting take on The Who's "Shakin' All Over." It concludes with a swinging rendition of the Four Tops' 'Baby I Need Your Loving' and is another essential one for the collection.

Review: It's a welcome reissue on 2xCD for this lovingly curated collection of full-length and 12" versions of Disco Classics - Disco Boogie - originally released as part of the Demon Music Group's Disco Discharge series in 2010. Disco was always a broad church. As a genre it brought in elements from Motown and Philly, pop, Latin, African, musicals, classical and even rock. Even so, arguably the longest-lived iteration of disco came from the blues-originated 'boogie' genre. Boogie was a flame that both provided the very basis of the disco groove and outlasted the genre's staggering late-70s mainstream global takeover. With its blend of soul, jazz, funk and r&b, and with its name descending from street slang for - ahem - sweaty lovemaking, boogie lasted well into the 1980s and beyond. It was was disco in the raw: boogie was more fundamental. Gathering together 20 exemplars of the sound, Disco Discharge: Disco Boogie provides a one-stop shop to boogie heaven and it features some of the biggest names of the genre, alongside some heinously forgotten classics.

Review: Legofunk's 12" series is back in action with this fantastic two-track EP from Da Lukas and Massimilliano Troiani. Extending outwards from Afrobeat and into sunny house dance-realms, 'Voodoo Bongos' comprises 'Bad Duna' and 'Afro Panda', the first of which exorcises any traces of bad juju with a righteous, shimmying shindig, through hand-drummed ascensions and chanted revelations against solid kicks. The sax line over and above predominates, though at times it blends back into the ensconcing euphony, at which point a retrofusion of white noise fallers and jaunty male verses displace the limelight. 'Afro Panda' moves similarly, unveiling another carnivorous piebald prance.

Review: This EP marks a sixth outing for the always fresh Stereo:type which deals in soulful house and disco fusions with a timeless edge. Risk Assessment is behind plenty of them, including this lovely 12" which opens with the deep house throb of 'The Way I Feel'. A dub version strips out the soulful vocal hooks then the flip opens with 'Do U Love Me' (feat Vanessa Freeman - The DJ mix) which is a proper bit of house music songwriting with US garage drums and soaring vocals. Last of all is 'The Party' (feat Hannah Khemoh) which is more upright and intended to get the floor pumping.

Review: UK artist Risk Assessment is back once again with some potent sonic weaponry that is designed to make a big impact in the club. All four of the disco cuts are peak time sounds starting with 'Something New' which is awash with some crystalline synths and gloriously lush pads. 'Party People' is nice raw and live-sounding disco with lo-fi drums, slapping hits and a James Brown-style funk vocal. 'Like This Like That!' brings some funky little guitar motifs and a jumble of percussion while last of all, 'Girl At The Disco' shuts down with a more sensuous sound and slinky grooves that worm their way into your affections.
