Be Great 2 (4:01)
Review: Qu'ran Goodman, Taji Goodman and Tarik Dawson are Da Youngsta's, a hardcore hip hop outfit active from 1992 and central to the genre's development through the nineties, most often on EastWest Records America. 'Be Great' is a brand new 2020 single that has lush piano work bringing warmth and soul, and slow motion, gently rotating and spacious drums sinking you into a stoned groove. The rhymes are slowed and stretched to match and the whole tune has an aspirational mood that permeates you're being. 'Be Great 2' is continuation that seals the deal.

Review: London trio Damos Room serve up their take on dub-inspired bass music on this new EP which emerged from a rare collaborative session in Elijah Minnelli's loft. 'Commencement' opens with a deep, droning bass groove that's topped with a stream of conscious muttering to create a moody and hypnotic sound. 'Mineral Blend' brings a laid-back dancehall vibe with dreamy echoes of past sessions and remixers Gonjasufi, Lewi Boome, Dome Zero and Polyop individually infuse the tracks with dub techno, acid and experimental twists best highlighted by Gonjasufi's haunting transformation of 'Commencement' into a misty, immersive bit of sonic menace.

Wish (Deepest dub) (5:25)
Review: Dangerous Goods bring fresh energy to I Travel to You with 'Wish,' reshaping a 2001 r&b track through the lens of street soul. The A-side thrives on a punchy bassline, crisp 808 drums, and a newly recorded vocal, giving it a sleek, modern flair. For the Deepest Dub mix, the track slows down, cut to tape and drenched in the bass-heavy influence of late 80s and early 90s breaks. It's a dual homage, blending nostalgic grooves with bold, contemporary production.

Review: The exact backstory of this one is hard to pin down but suffice it to say if you haven't heard Darondo's 'Didn't I' before then as soon as you do you will fall in love. It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

Review: Omar S does what he wants, so we are often treated to some surprises on his FXHE label that come seemingly out of nowhere. If they come with his stamp of approval, though, that is enough for us to find them intriguing, at the very least. This one is from Dastardly Kids aka Sonny Dulphi and Pat2Dope and they bring hi tech styles to hip-hop. The sounds are raw and twisted, with spoken-word bars over dense layers of synth and drums on opener '4 Every Day Dastardly'. There is a metallic feel to the icy cold and sleazy beats of 'Bu$$ The Bank', more depth to 'Pesos' which has a cloud rap vibe and more stoned and late night vibes to 'Dastardly Love Song'. A fresh double 7" for sure.

Review: This long-lost De La Soul gem, originally a promo-only release from 1994, finally sees the light of day. Featuring four tracks from their acclaimed Buhloone Mindstate album, this 12" also boasts two exclusive cuts showcasing De La Soul's collaborative spirit. The real magic of this release lies in its ability to transport listeners back to the golden age of alternative hip-hop, where Tracks like 'iN tHe WoOds' and 'i aM I bE' showcase the group's signature blend of jazz-infused beats, playful lyricism and socially conscious themes. And few tunes the American hip-hop group put out are as great as this one - 'The Magic Number' is their signature hit, a happy mix of flower-power verses, colourful rhythms and captivating hip hop grooves laden with funk. But it was worth the wait. The opener 'Cover Me' features Ruff's, well, slightly rough - or at least gravelly - vocals over a rhythm and bass instrumental. Both tracks, 'Requiem for Doom' and 'Stoneferry Morning,' were crafted during lockdown like so much good music of recent years. Review: 'Debes Llorar' is the second of two super limited 7"s being dropped by Dez Andres on the fledgling Future Rootz label this month. Like the other one, this 45 pulls out plenty of the Cuban influences Dez is known for. A-side 'Debes Llorar' is all life-affirming chords that fans of his classic 'New 4 U' will recognise, but stitched over ticking and raw drum beats with a Latin shuffle and Spanish vocals. Review: The latest dinked 7" single on Tim Zawada and Ben Van Dyke's essential Star Creature label comes from Diamond Oritz, AKA boogie and '80s soul revivalist Jeremy Diamond-Oritz. While there are many overlooked gems in the producer's back catalogue, there's little as rush inducing as "Make Me Wanna". A slick, soulful song with authentically rubbery and kaleidoscopic '80s soul/boogie production, it sounds like a long lost classic. The breezy, slap bass-wielding instrumental B-side, "Wait Up", is arguably even better. Like the A-side, it boasts some serious good synth action and a groove that you just have to dance to.

Rapture (remix) (4:33)
Review: Aussie mash-up maestro and re-editor DJ Agent '86 first made his mark two decades ago and has periodically delivered killer cuts ever since. Of those, the most celebrated is undoubtedly 'All About The Money' - a cannily constructed party jam that first dropped digitally at the tail end of the noughties. Here it finally makes it to wax. It's a simple idea, expertly executed, with the Australian producer peppering a jaunty reggae-disco groove (built mostly from a late 70s disco cover of Pink Floyd's 'Money') with a variety of cash-money related rap samples. Over on the B-side he works his magic on Blondie classic 'Rapture', adding in subtle elements from other cuts early on before building energy via the familiar groove and well-used effects.

Review: DJ Bacon's new edits LP Super Disco Raps takes two forms: firstly as a full-length 16-track LP, and secondly as a selectors' single edition, the latter of which you see here. 'Vol. 2' hears two extra remixes that did make the big disc's cut, but Bacon decided they also suited a limited edition 7" release for good measure. Playability is the implied reason: on the A we've a glossed-out disco scratch-tool remix of Wu Tang Clan's 'Gravel Pit', on which ghostly rap acapellas are laid to a lackadaisical funk beat, and on the B there's a similar version of Ultramagnetic MC's's 'Moe Luv's Theme', which loops and skips about an unmistakable four-beat, wax-scrubbing hook.

Review: This is an interesting 7" from Japan's Lawson Entertainment that blends vintage soulful vibes with cutting-edge beats. Grooveman Spot is behind the A-side remix and is a revered name in the Japanese underground scene who reimagines 'Mygem' with his signature touch by layering jazzy chords, funky basslines and crisp percussion for a groove-infused trip that merges classic hip-hop with contemporary techniques. On the flip is a low-slung and sun kissed sound, 'Mirror Ball (feat Chico Carlito & Kiki Vivi Lily)' with lush melodies and innocent vocal sounds.

DJ LBR - "Let Me Clear My Funk" (4:35)
DC'S Finest - "Can I Have It Like That" (4:56)
Review: UK-Irish label Battle Weapons do exactly what their name suggests, releasing slab after slab of proverbial sonic weaponry for use on the dancefloor come warground. Here the outfit welcome two seasoned names, DJ LBR and DC's Finest, for 'Let Me Clear My Funk' and 'Can I Have It Like Wack'. The first is a hilariously hung slab of cutup goodness, mashing up a live recording of DJ Kool, Biz Markie and Doug E. Fresh's 'Let Me Clear My Throat' with the central lick-groove of Cheryl Lynn's 'Got To Be Real', among other crowd-jeering follow-ons. Then the B moves bustlier and heavier on the ride cymbal sizzle, with vocal sampleage from Pharrell Williams' 'Can I Have It Like That' together with some super-real big band bravado.

Nah Gun Nah Heat (3:43)
Feel Like Standing (3:21)
Review: The figurative "battle weapon" is a kind of warring sonic heuristic; a dirty, up-your-sleeve musical "tool" made expressly for the MVP DJ to use in times of soundclash-y trouble. The Battle Weapons label know this all too well, and here they welcome new trainee assailant DJ Maars to demo his skills in the colosseum, bridging a fine line of recognisability and productive sample-flippage. 'A Nah Gun Nah Heat' brews Snoop Dogg's 'Drop It Like It's Hot' and Doug E. Fresh's 'La-Di-Da-Di' to delicious acapella effect, whilst 'Feel Like Standing' smashes Ludacris and Marcia Griffiths in an almost fated blend. Why didn't anyone else think of these before?

Sunrise (Beatless version) (3:19)
Review: DJ Mitsu The Beats summons up a mellow, jazz-tinged spin on Norah Jones' early classic 'Sunrise', following a plucky piano-studio sesh shared with Takumi Kaneko of Cro-Magnon. After a cannonballing digital release, the "instrumental chill" track now takes shape as a 7" single, suturing Mitsu's laidback bop to Kaneko's smooth, sunspot piano lines. With cover photography by surf documentarian Atsushi Kumano, the single was in turn singled out for the surf music compilation Salt Meets Island Cafe: Sea of Love 2, curated by new lifestyle magazine Salt. Balancing beachside ease and unsurpassable musicianship, this track hankers at the title for next best surf-chill anthem.

Daily Meets (3:06)
Daily Meets (instrumental) (3:07)
Review: A new song by the acclaimed DJ Mitsu The Beats (a member of Sendai's hip-hop crew Gagle) and rapper Sorane, 'Daily Meets' is a chillaxed, fluid lo-hi-fi hip-hop tonic for those whose ears require polishing, refreshing and/or full-blown aneling in the morning. Getting at a quotidian "everyday life" themes - bleary eyes, coffee shop hissings, cutlery tinkles, long gazes out the window - this jazzy track blends sharp lyricism with repetitious slice-of-life themes, finding joy in those life periods that the less patient among us dare to call groundhog days. Backed up by the instrumental too, you're more than well equipped for both DJ and home system play here.

Review: As the man behind so many of the beats for Jurassic 5, not to mention an in-demand producer in many other places, Nu Mark has got chops for days. Roaming free on his own Hot Plate label, last year's Run For Cover was loaded with crisp, seriously funkified gems, and now two of the best have been pressed up as a tidy 7" for all those who love their platters compact. On the A side, 'Everybody Everybody' throws some tropical tones and exuberant organs into the blender with tough boom bap and plenty more besides, making for one sunny blast of a tune. On the flip Danny Drive Thru pops by to add some irreverent vocal madness into the mix on 'Break Ya Neck'.

Review: DJ Rude One's latest 7" single, 'Murder Paragraphs,' featuring Roc Marciano, sets the stage for his upcoming album, Upper Space. With gritty production and Roc Marciano's smooth delivery, the track exemplifies the underground hip-hop aesthetic that both artists are known for. The original and instrumental versions included on the single provide a complete listening experience, while new artwork by Spectacular Diagnostics adds visual intrigue. Roc Marciano's contribution to the underground hip-hop scene is undeniable, and his collaboration with DJ Rude One on Murder Paragraphs is an example of their creative chemistry. As DJ Rude One prepares to drop his official follow-up album, Upper Space, this single serves as a tantalizing preview of what's to come.

Review: DJ Ryow aka Smooth Current is a Japanese DJ and producer known for his hip-hop and r&b remixes. 'Re:Strain Of Stairs', as the title suggests, reinterprets the song 'Strain Of Stairs' by Japanese rock band The Pillows on the A-side, bringing a loose-hipped drum workout to the ordeal. On the B, meanwhile, Ryow goes all out on a new original featuring Kim Hill, 'Ain't Even Like Me', a song which first debuted online a least four years ago - it's an impressively-made production in contemporary r&b, with exquisite harmonies from Hill.

Review: DJ Slugo is a legendary producer who very much helped to define the sound of the equally legendary Dance Mania label back in the day. Now Subterranean Playhouse has put together a collection of his most influential works across the juke and footwork spectrum on one vital 12". 'Bang Dem Walls' kicks off in signature style with hard-hitting rhythms and ghetto vocals. 'Like It Raw (feat DJ Deeon - 2002 remix)' is another hardcore dancefloor banger with jittery rhythms and turbocharged stabs and 'On The Low (feat Double AC & DJ PJ)' is exactly the sort of short but sweet and impactful jam that DJ Slufo is such a master of.

The artist is well versed in subtly reworking the classics, bringing them up to date and adding his own unique flavour. Here they welcome DJ Spinna and J Rocc for the very latest edition in their Wrecka Stow Edits series, which hears two further majestic remixes of classic r&b reelers. First up is Spinna's version of Prince's 'Starfish & Coffee' with the renamed 'Maple Syrup Jam', which strains and thins Prince's already prickly granules to provide that extra ophiuroid zing. Then J Rocc follows up with 'Re Purple Music', also a remix of a Prince cut, 'Purple Music', providing ever further filtrated disco-funk panache.

On Side-1, the Racked Mix of 'Lowrider' reimagines Cypress Hill's classic into an underground groove, infusing it with a darker, more rhythmic vibe that keeps the original's essence while bringing something entirely new to the table. On Side-2, the Cracker Mix of 'Vanilla Bop' takes Vanilla Ice's 'Ice Ice Baby' and transforms it into a lively jam band groove. It follows on from the well-received 'Feel Like Home' 45rpm last month and this time offers more well-conceived and carefully sought-out fusions. The a-side 'My Energy' features Eva Lazarus. After his super sweet 7" with Nubya Garcia he now joins forces with Joel Culpepper. This most sublime vocalist croons over laid back and jazzy beat work from Yoda. Deep, tumbling bass adds weight to 'London Fields' while Culpepper's soulful and pained vocal really hits the mark in some style. An instrumental is included on the flip which is just as blissed out, but allows the noodling sax more room to breathe.

Review: The dream team Dogger & Mindstate return to TNQ wax with this hearty package of soulful, hip-hop-influenced D&B flavours that was originally unleashed digitally last summer. Representing both their pathways into this music, from north to south, the duo recruit the likes of London's Verbz and Manchester's Sleazy F Baby to vocal and narrate their delicate, subtle but ultimately heavyweight rhythms. From the deep jazz of 'Different Roads' to the symphonic dynamics of 'From The Concrete', this is one of the hardest hitting and emotional records Dogger and Mindstate have made so far.
