Review: The pinnacle of original-visional femme rap, Bahamadia quickly dominated the Philly hip-hop scene at the age of 30 with the release of her independently-made LP Kollage in 1996. But she'd been active on the scene at least two years prior; 'Total Wreck' was her first ever single, and preempted the record alongside 'Uknowhowwedu', 'I Confess' and 'Biggest Part Of Me' in a two-year drumroll that would eventually set the Penn state capital slowly afire. Now fab flippers 45 Kings provide a furtherance of Bahamadia's original offering, with 'Total Wreck' and 'Uknowhowwedu' appearing in calmly reedited form here, making no bones of sampli-fying the complementary 'Street Version' of the A-side, which preposed the original record on 12".

Review: Casquiat and Controller 7 have united on DATUM Recordings for this high class new 45rpm which works as a fine weapon for your record bag or equally well as some superb home listening. Casquiat goes first with 'Set It Off' which has raw drum breaks and direct bars delivered over some wild guitar riffs, slamming hits and old school vocal chops. Controller 7's 'Dope On Plastic' is a percolating funk joint with old school hip-hop energy and some evocative bars that recall the likes of Beastie Boys. Four disinhibitors - we mean it, as these tracks are incredibly loose in feel - 'Track 1' and 'Track 2' pump and sway through unholy garage house swings and vintage hauled, shoop-a-doop sample oddities; it's only at the point of the B-side when we reach a whistling version of Ciara's '1, 2 Step' set to clinching electro, and 'Track 4' befuddles further with tense, materially informed exercise in soulful bruk. Review: Dynamite Cuts continue in their mission to share jazz, funk and soul deep cuts with the world, this time pulling a timeless gilded funk rabbit out of their hats. Gregory James Edition took on the collective mantle of "Prophets Of Soul" at the moment of their 1973 debut, which would only then be followed by the 1979 record Gonna Grow Some Gold before an eventual disbandment. A shame, since 'Ain't No Sunshine' and 'Changing Things' stand out as the record's finest offcuts; the first track uses its various clavinets and Farfisa Combo organs to estrange an existingly capricious funk sound, rendering it rather odd, alien, spacious. 'Changing Things' contrasts with upswells of gushing piano set to a funk backbeat, which come yet measured by an admirable key change control, again held down by lead player Gregory Bibb.

Review: In a rare backwards castling and killer checkmate, Friendly Records boldly re-press one of J Dilla's most beloved cuts, 'Geek Down', which appeared on his landmark Donuts LP. Known for its sample of the 2001 dark funk tune 'Charlies Theme' by The Jimi Entley Sound, this indelible, ringed hors d'oeuvre was essential for the critics' collective assessment that the 2005 LP was his magnum opus. Trailing pink sprinkles behind it, 'Geek Down' made Dilla's name. Sadly, the title would seem predict the artist's death just three days after the record's release. Dilla was a true productive geekazoid, and it shows in this track, with its untameable, above-the-law Western guitar wahs and tense, lilting strings keeping the goosebump hairs stood aright. The originally sampled track appears on the B, still only part-revealing the magic trick.

Review: A one-off reissue on Brooklyn's Finest - whose name in turn takes after one of B.I.G.'s many nicknames - Biggie Smalls' 'Sky's The Limit' set out Christopher Wallace's verbal message in piercing tones: go big or go home. The third and final single from B.I.G.'s second album Life After Death, this is the kind of song that obsessive fans might conclude portended his sticky end: not only was it the flagship song from the album, it also contained ominous sound design and sample work, and the music video features children dressed up as and imitating B.I.G., P. Diddy, Busta Rhymes, Faith Evans, and more, in a farcical pantomime of the rap game.

Review: A chance to own this much loved pre-album classic from King Kruke aka Southwark-raised Archy Marshall on a neat 7". The track, originally issued in 2012 on the Rinse label, has all the hallmarks that would make Marshall famous, namely a lilting, emotionally direct vocal performance, some rather nifty guitar work and some rough cut breakbeats with a lovely whiff of bedroom production about them. The flip, meanwhile, is adorned with an instrumental version, making this quite the all round desirable item.

First up is Suckaside with an improved remix of Ghostface Killah, Jadakiss and Comp's 'Run', which originates from Ghostface's Hidden Darts 2 mixtape from 2003; Suckaside underlays the track with a fresh instrumental composed of the Rocky Balboa theme tune, to unsurprisingly rousing, sumo-flooring effect. 'Electric Relaxation' and 'Check The Rhime' are blown out across a two-side jazzstep liquescence, while 'Cool Like That' and 'All Night Long' make for finer-brushed summer steps.

Review: The mighty Dez Andres has hooked up with Parisian digger Victor Kiswell for a sublime new double album on Spot Lite that finds a perfect sweet spot between both men's sound. It stems from a party that explores Arabic grooves from Northern Africa and the Middle East and pairs that with low slung deep house beats and hip-hop inspired joints. It's woozy and warm, packed with killer melodies and hooky riffs and is right up there with some of Dez's best work. Review: After receiving a Swedish GRAMMY nomination for her 2023 album Be Free and maintaining a busy tour schedule, trombonist, songwriter and producer Ebba decided to try and challenge jazz's rigid boundaries for her next project. The result is When You Know, a smoky, melancholic brew that swirls jazz, alternative r&b, indie, hip-hop and ambient sounds into something pleasingly fresh. Co-produced with Berlin-based producer Lucy Liebe, the album was recorded in a cabin outside her hometown during the harsh winter and reflects Ebba's direct, driven nature. It's a record that excites the imagination as well as warming the soul and this version comes with superb original artwork designed by illustrator David Burnett on a lovely splatter-coloured vinyl inspired by its own cover.

Review: Virginia collective Butcher Brown flaunt their lapidary, multifaceted flair for transversal jazz on their new album for Concord Jazz, via a seamless blend of funk, r&b, soul, bossa nova and much, much else. Through the collective persona of Butcher Brown - an imagined philosopher jazzmaster king, whose grasp of music is said to owe much to legacies of garage punk and jazz funk - the smooth quintet say this "joint" was recorded with the intention of recreating the kind of music one might find oneself dancing to in a club in New York and the UK, attesting all of the band members' compounded skills as music producers. Chopping up samples whilst performing on the fly, the record takes its name from the fact that all members were "pulling samples from across the Atlantic", building their grooves around them.

Review: Fresh from releasing a swathe of conceptual full-lengths, Los Angeles threesome Clipping have returned to their hip-hop roots via a mixtape style album reflective of their hip-hop roots. Of course, this is not hip-hop in the classical sense. According to the accompany sleeve notes, Dead Channel Sky is a collection of cuts focused on the present, dually inspired by the histories of cyberpunk and hip-hop. In practice, that means fast-flowing and lyrically dextrous rhymes, of course, but also beats that variously sample, chop up or reference everything from 90s rave classics, the rock-rave big beat antics of the Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails stail industrial grit, to TB-303-laden acid house, the dark and doomy trip-hop of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack, drum and bass and experimental electronica.

Review: Polish producer Latarnik and American vocalist Anthony Mills collide on this new album for Polish label Astigmatic to explore lo-fi hip-hop, soul, dub and experimental electronics. Mills's falsetto vocal brings great Neo-soul warmth to Crack Rock with emotionally charged tones soaring over the production which ranges from sugary and 80s-tinged disco and boogie on 'Crack' to deep, seductive and gooey on 'Passive Lover' which is a more romantic sound. Latarnik's work is often minimal yet immersive which creates space for Mills' voice to shine and is delivered in equal parts spoken word, chant and soulful croon. The hypnotic, slow-burning soundscapes that result are both intimate and confrontational, ready to make you dance but also often just to feel. Unapologetically raw and deeply human, this one lingers long after the final track ends.
