Review: For those who appreciate the harder, more twisted side of D&B, no label can match up to the stature of Renegade Hardware. It's been some time since the legendary imprint let fly with some wax, but they've kicked off the From The Vaults series to go back over some of the most important releases in their massive catalogue and give the most worthy a fresh moment in the sun. Following on from landmark EPs from Chase & Status and Total Science, here's a VA disc featuring absolute devastation from Absolute Zero & Subphonics, gnarly acrobatics from the imperious Noisia and The Upbeats, an icy stalker from Digital and Spirit and classic 'Horn Track' sampling hi-jinx from Gremlinz and Overlook.

Review: Wake up and smell the breakbeat! Transmute return with another absurdly good collection of tracks from friends old and new. The mysterious Army Of Ghosts set the scene with the breezy, deep and beautifully Good Looking-esque 'Dreaming'. Greenleaf and Ornette Hawkins follow with some of the wildest drums you'll hear this season. Cosmic jazz right down to the twinkling keys, this will fry minds! Finally Latent Notion closes on a deep space stepper vibe with 'Lapse'. Timeless time travelling... Sleeping is for winners.

Planetary Reboot (5:21)
Review: Here's a tag team you'd be proud to take home to your parents: polite civilised gentlemen by day Sam and Om are unruly, uncompromised club crushers by night, slapping ears happy with their unique jungle, hip-hop, bass melt-ups. Here we find them doubling their sonic muscle and creativity on their own Bunit venture: "Windmill Kick" is the ultimate finishing move, all clattering drums and classic jungle motifs. From here we get darker and starker with every track.... "Big Kev" is a big juicy rolling halftimer, "1000 Cats" is a bewitching brew of acid and underwater footwork while "Planetary Reboot" presses the beatless reset button on all your preconceptions.

Decoy
Review: Whether they hooked up as like-minded souls or they were paired up by Horizons, the tag-teaming of Cern and Overlook is a stroke of genius. Cern's industrial undertones and Overlook's sense of spaciousness complement each other consummately, fusing to create two dark slices of minimal brutal beauty. "Nevada Ghost" pummels with strategic kicks and unnerving textures and far-away cries. "Decoy", meanwhile, takes the power factor up a notch with stuttering breaks and an immovable spine of iced out pads that flurry and flicker with subtle menace. Seriously heavy.

Optiv & Cza - "Sub Surface" (5:19)
Disprove, Signal & Audeka - "Ritual" (5:16)
Review: Methlab: the agency behind some of the biggest names in tech D&B and innovative events around Europe continue their pact with Vegas & Maldini's Bad Taste imprint with the second instalment of in-house creations. As you'd expect, it's an all-out assault as Current Value leads the charge with a sizzling neuro racer "Pelham 212", the ever-innovative Billain tumbles behind with "Metal Jaws", a loose and frantic cut with drums that really shouldn't make sense, but definitely do. Elsewhere Optiv & Cza get gritty and abrasive on "Sub Surface" while Disprove, Signal and Audeka shove their middle fingers up at the space/time continuum with "Ritual". Brutal.

Review: Heavyweight Dutch neuro-troupe Blackout switch back to the tail end of 2015 and handpick four of their fieriest slappers from the vaults for this four-track V/A 12". Mindscape takes the lead with the electrifying seizure-inciter "One Sound", Current Value's "Rocket Science" reminds everyone why he's in a league of his own while newcomer Pythius's "Driveyard" reminds us why he was nominated as Best Newcomer in the Drum&BassArena Awards on the basis of a very slim (but growing) repertoire. Finally Optiv & BTK close the show with the shred-tastic bass riot "Dark City". Four essential cuts from Blackout's ever-developing chaos collection.

Review: Noisia team up with tech-stepping neurofunk originators Ed Rush & Optical on the A Side of this release on their very own Vision imprint. Cue a tense thriller movie style intro, punishing drum kicks and heavy sci-fi SFX. Flipping over for another killer collab, the Dutch trio get tech-y with Lifted Music's poster boy, Spor. Rippling synths, crisp breaks and a murderous b-line make this one a stand out, with super tight production - rather reminiscent the Conquerors & Commoners EP but with a noisier (!) edge. This is everything you could expect and more from all parties - a quality 12".

Review: After plenty of chatter, the highly anticipated Method To The Madness is almost upon us! To tease us furthermore the duo present two sizzling rollers that tick all manner of D&B boxes. "Murmur" is the prize fighter of the two. A collabo with equally respected D&B star Break, it switches and gurgles as we ride through more minimal grooves into a full fledged bass riff that mutates for the third time when a chilling vocal sample makes it way into the mix. Meanwhile on the B you'll find "Red Mist VIP", a collabo with Subterra and MC Gusto. A cool update on their 2010 banger, this will shred any discerning dancefloor.

Spine Chiller takes us right back to the roots of the label; ice cold jazzy spectral sparkling in all directions. Think a deep Krust or a jazzy Paradox. Review: Om Unit returns after the summer's techno session on Idle Hands, hitting hard with his second "Torchlight" EP of the year. It's every bit as deep, diverse and experimental as you'd want it to be. And it features none other than Krust as the lavish 80s synths and dense layers of "Underground Cinema" ensure the EP's soul truly is in motion. "Fuzzd An Soup" retains a certain sense of classic jungle magic with its tight infectious hang drum patterns and textures. Finally "Lightbody Transfer" is the complete switch with its sedate, torpid kicks and underwater atmosphere. Immaculate.

Adventures In Eden (7:52)
Review: Cosmic Bridge builder Om Unit continues to demonstrate near-Calibre levels of proliferation and precision. Nine months and two singles have passed since his first "Torchlight" EP and he returns with more deliciously unclassifiable slo-mo, halftime heaviness. If you're instantly won over by the deep throaty gurgle in the slurring bass on "Connector", then you'll definitely be elevated by the deep dream twinkles and arpeggios of "Adventures In Eden". If you're not shaken and stirred by the rim-shot breakage of "Mothership Riddim" then you'll definitely be buried deep in tubular bass bliss of "Transformation" or, indeed, tripped out by the growling bass and cavernous space of "Angry Buzz". Yet another immaculate creation that defies the standard pigeonholing.

Review: More fresh behaviour from the Cosmic Bridge builder Om Unit. This time focusing his energies on the 150-ish section of the BPM scale, across five tracks 'Flux' takes us to some exciting places. We're disarmed by ambience ('Process'), massaged by dubby uptempo shakers ('Angels', shuffled up steppy, spacious techno ('Ramp'), twisted by contemporary electro translations ('Rubberneck') and sent back home to bed with more wonderfully abstract and ambient synth washes that bring everything together ('Autumn Shadows') Highly recommended.

Review: Make hay while the sun shines... Binga and Unit's Bunit collaborations are rare - both in volume of pressings and in the fact they're only doing one collabo a year. Lucky for us there are four tracks to chow down on and they're all as remarkable, rich and alluring as you'd want them to be. "Optimus Prime" is almost Italo in its synth silkiness and rare groove, "2000 Dogs" is the dancehall your great grandkids will be dancing to while "Up & Under" is an all-out bubbly jungle brock out and "Baby Steps" winds down on a cinematic, emotional sci-fi finale. Beautiful stuff... Bun it at your peril.

Review: Already a surefire 2016 shatter-fest via its January digital release, Optical & BTK's double-A finally enjoys a vinyl release in all its heavyweight glory. "Infection" is an unfettered neuro heads-down roller with bass textures that sound like they're made of pure electricity. Flip for the truly schizophrenic "Let It Go" where a jump-up dynamic is carried by a frazzled bass, truckloads of FX and drum rolls that teasingly go on for longer than they really should. Properly mental.

Review: Neuro legends old and new: Optiv & BTK lead the charge with "Antimatter", a loose, funky example of toxic funk. Whether you focus on the extensive, tub-thumping rolls, the psy-like arpeggio or the twenty tonne bassline, there's so much detail in here you could get lost for days. Flip for a lesson from Ukraine duo Agressor Bunx as "Burn" shakes with a reece that's reminiscent of early Bad Company, drums that nod towards Misanthrop's methodology and a breakdown that guarantees some serious rabbit hole action. See you on the other side.

Echoes (5:46)
Review: Since its relaunch in 2017, Deep Jungle has been killing it by serving up previously unreleased tunes from the 90's next to represses of select rarities and new tunes in the vibe of the classic 93-96 era. Here we have Orca ensuring we all have a whale of a time (hey, hey) while lost in the precision-tooled breaks and snares, hits and lunging basslines of 'What Kind Of World.' 'Camyx' is a more trippy sound with liquid synths shimmering and raga vocals during the beatdown. 'Echoes' is a driving and physical workout with high seed loops and minimal pads.

One of Kosheen co-founder Decoder's earliest projects, Orca's ripples date back to around 92 and seminal labels like Lucky Spin. Here we have a few reloads and few unreleased moments from that era. Highlights include the wonderfully rushy 'Spacetek' with its bellowing pads and springy beats and the didge-blasting wobbler 'Skylab' but the whole EP is fantastic. Have a whale of a time.

Review: If we're going to talk about seminal jungle records they don't come much more important than this one, right? Origin Unknown, aka Andy C and Ant Miles, defined a new darkside direction for breakbeat hardcore and jungle when they committed 'Valley Of The Shadows' to wax. The iconic samples, the looming sub bass, the tight as you like break edits - it's just the perfect track. Most people forget it was originally paired up with another tune though, and 'The Touch' deserves some praise too. It feels more in line with the general wave of hardcore that was prevalent when the record dropped in 1993, not least thanks to the gnarly synth lines and vocal slices, but it's still a totem of the genre at its best. Remastered, repressed and ready to destroy the rave all over again.

Previously considered lost in the midst of DAT time, they were recently recovered, remastered and rewarded with the life they've always deserved: "Voyage To The Future" continues that rolling percussive, dark groove vibe of their breakthrough hit while "Second Sight" bounces with a lighter touch and big breezy pads that wouldn't have gone amiss in Bukem's sets around the time. The relentless label have invited the legend that is Johnny Osbourne into the fold for this swinging slice of authentic jungle in cahoots with Marcus Visionary that is fully primed for the dancehalls. Harmonic, sweet-toned and warm as toast, Osbourne's ode to the raving crew is crystalline and, with enough air time at the raves, will be very easy to sing along to. Here are two examples; 'Goodbye' says hello with oceanic waves of disarming pads, bellowing subs and spacious breaks while 'In The Dark' brings a little more 1990 unity vibes thanks to the sensual vocal and subtle piano charm. Outrageously good.

Both 'Follow For Now' and 'Alright' capture that transition from hardcore to jungle with big vocal samples, dubby bass and rattling breakbeats. Developing the pedigree established on the likes of Renegade and Samurai, here we find him telling two wholly different tales; "False" pays homage to the uncompromising foundations laid by Metalheadz while "Everything Counts" takes us down a much darker, shadowy path. Full force dynamics, uncompromising drumwork and a pressure heavy enough to flatten the seabed. 'Detour' goes a little deeper. Swaggering like a Jilted Generation offcut, densely processed and stretched to fit the modern pranged era, this is industrial strength breakbeat at a tempo that will relate to all corners. This time taking a side apiece, the theme remains bleak, tense and very old school Metalheadz. Overlook's 'Video Nasties' rattles with cavernous echoes, chiselled two-step and wheezing pipes while Karim's 'Dimensions' adds a whole raft of drama with its distorted one-note growls, tense synth line and rattling breaks. Review: Respectfully honouring one Dillinja's finest tunes in their name and respectfully honouring our ears in their short-but-super-sweet output so far, DJ Slap's WOC imprint is kicking with serious statements of intent. Following Saxxon's launch, US firebrand Dave Owen takes over with three equally on-point compositions; "Breaking Through" sits somewhere between Utah Jazz and Need For Mirrors with its rushy pianos and wasp-like electrified bass sizzles, "Twin Stars" takes us deeper into a more soulful introspective thanks to its ghostly vocal moans and weeping strings, "Run The Jewels" shuts down the show with the biggest weapon in the cabinet... A gully, swampy tech funk roller with heavy halftime sensibilities. All bases covered, all shots fired... Bring on WOC3!

Deeper again Out Of Fuel provide the most junglistic cut of the EP with echoes of Photek in the drums and spatial dynamic. Review: Bryan Gee's Chronic imprint continues to act as a rejuvenated outlet for those seeking heavyweight, bass fuelled junglist riddims, with the label's first release of 2014 taking shape in that most appealing of formats - the double pack. The Warehouse Music sampler precedes the release of a 24 track various artists compilation that is described by Chronic as "an ode to the more stripped back, raw sounds of D&B's past - all with the unmistakable edge of 2014 production power". The four tracks here certainly live up to that billing, commencing with one of Roni Size's most vicious productions in some time in the shape of "Blind Alley". This sets a dark tone for what follows from Capone, Optiv & BTK and Serum, whose closing track "Energy" is likely to test the facial muscles and gun fingers of dancefloor attendees across the globe, such is the screwy nature of the bass line.

Review: Serious remix vibes abound on this long-awaited double 12" from Renegade. InsideInfo initiates proceedings with an absolutely foul remix of "Killa Bees". Making it even more elastic and funky than it was before, it's an absolute beast. Maztek's take on "Inception" follows similar suit thanks to a cool array of percussive elements and a unforgettable guttural bass groan. Optiv & BTK then return the favour and take Maztek's "Limber" into an old industrial work yard and strip it down to its bare industrial components. Finally Verb takes on Future Cut's classic "Whiplash" and boosts it up to planet 2013 with some of the heaviest drums you'll hear all year. Insanely massive.

Review: Jim Coles' decision back in 2010 to implement a swerve in his sonic trajectory away from his hip-hop past as 2tall in favour of a more all-encompassing approach that touches on various strands of bass culture as Om Unit has paid off and then some. Subsequent releases on Exit, Autonomic, Civil Music, Metalheadz and his own Cosmic Bridge imprint have all shown Om Unit eminently capable of tempo shifting productions that appeal to fans of Bass music, Drum & Bass and footwork alike. The latter has been explored further while the Dream Continuum collaboration with Machinedrum on Planet Mu and his Philip D. Kick alias where the link between Chicago's juke heritage and UK Jungle was explored. All this and more is included on Threads, a debut Om Unit LP for Civil Music that deftly collates various strands (or threads) of his production career over the past fifteen years for a cohesive 15 track set that veers through of hip hop, dubstep, jungle and even house.

Review: It's the moment we've been waiting for! Every single one of Optiv & BTK's singles since they hooked up a mere 18 months ago has been, without argument, a killer. Ed Rush was a wise man when he signed them for an album; and, naturally, they've delivered. Too much to talk about in one small review but one particular highlight is "Don't Need You"; acknowledging the scene's current movement towards to more vocal methods but maintaining all the filth and gritty gusto they've become synonymous with, it sums up just why these guys are respected by fans and fellow artists alike. An epic debut LP.

Review: Zero T's 4th album is a conceptual Drum n Bass marriage with legendary high-tech pianist ONJ, who has been on the cutting edge of music equipment for over 20 years. The 2 are returning once again for another release on The North Quarter, expanding the pair's 2 track EP 'Everyday Struggles' into a full-length project. Zero T pulls once again from Jazz influences, paired with his bright and expansive breakbeats. The amen breaks on tracks like 'Twenty Three' and 'Some Type of Way' meld with the jazz piano and saxophone riffs perfectly, broken up by lo-fi interludes, even a lounge piano portion on side D with 'Expendable'. Kilburn is an authentically British union of two polar opposite genres, and yet it just works so well. It's got to be heard to be believed.
