Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

OR - "Hammock Beats" (4:15)
Ground & MAYUKo - "Liquidanz" (9:21)
Hutte Sound System - "Fire Fly" (4:54)
Review: Akira Arasawa opens up with psychedelic Balearic house on 'Panorama New Touch' while OR's 'Hammock Beats' is glitchy and low-slung downtempo. On the flip is the nine-minute head melter 'Liquidanz' with its rippling synth modulations and Hutte Sound System close down with the dreamy end of the night soother 'Fire Fly'. Thsi mproject sees Especial Specials joining forces ed up with Chillmountain Recordings - a label from Osaka, Japan - on a series of new EPs, this being the first of hopefully many. The idea is to show the world the talents the label has at its disposal. It's definitely a case of mission accomplished on this evidence.

Review: Rebirth kicks off its 2024 with a remix EP that serves as "a tribute to the Brescian music scene in its many facets and declinations." The full original project is a complete 12-track album that brings together many different sounds, scenes and generations, with the best bits now assembled on this new 12". The revered deep house master Fred P opens up with some texture spiritual synth depths, K-Lone brings some nice house swing to his version of 'Paline' and edit maestro Rahsaan also keeps it paired back and late night on his soulful take on 'Scent Of An Old Life'. A great reimagining of some moving musical adventures, then.

Review: Nunorthern Soul's fourth vinyl outing encourages you to sit back, relax, and sink into some truly horizontal sounds awash with Balearic bliss. James Bright kicks off the session with the warm glow of 'Amber' and its slowly percolating beats and painterly synths. Be.Lanuit's 'Nana A Leon' has a starry eyed charm that will get you gazing off into the night and elsewhere Norht Of The Island's 'I Feel' has a chugging groove and exotic synth work bringing plenty of colour. This is a high class EP of richly detailed downtempo brilliance.

Gerard Blanc - "Dis Tout Bas Dis" (remix club) (7:35)
Princesse Erika - "Calomnie" (club mix) (8:41)
Review: A La French 1987-1992 is a new series from long time dance veteran Dimitri From Paris. It finds him digging deep into his vaults and returning with some of his earlier edit work, often with a Balearic feel over deep house drums and 80s disco vibes. The first in the three part series is a real smoother, with sexy and steamy sax lines on 'Yuku Mon Ukulele' bringing a late night feel. There is a slow motion party tune from Alpha Blondy that runs deep, Gerard Blanc then gets a little more upbeat but still with plenty of soulful and loved up vocal vibes and Princesse Erika closes with lush piano stabs and synth strings that light up your heart.

Kunama (5:17)
Paradise Remembered (5:16)
Review: Some Paradise Forgotten has had a standout year with a bunch of superb releases and now comes another one, this time from Eddie Logix featuring Gabriel Oliveria. Right from the off, 'Kunama' strikes a perfect balance between horizontal grooves and gently persuasive Mediterranean rhythms. It's led by summery flutes which float up top over languid drums as the jumbled and organic perc helps smooth things along. 'Paradise Remembered' pairs more great win sounds with stringy melodies and chanting vocals that bring plenty of exotic vibes to this most humid and tropical of tracks.

Cero (DJ Harvey remix)
Review: Second time round for Galarude's "Cero", which first appeared on Japan's Locarno Records way back in 2004. Produced by DJ Kent, Hiroshi Kawanabe and Noriyoshi Sassanuma (Sly Mongoose), the original version is a near perfect fusion of heavy tribal drums, beautiful tropical melodies and darting Balearic electronics. It may be nine years old, but it still sounds wonderfully fresh. That Prins Thomas has selected it for reissue is no surprise. This time round, there's also a bonus remix from hairy legend DJ Harvey. The reclusive party-starter shuffles the pack impressively, adding some snaking saxophone action on a version that delights in bringing out the original's most positive elements.

Cero (Tuff City Kids mix 2)
Review: Both Tough City Kids and Prins Thomas supply two mixes each for Galarude's "Cero", released through Prins Thomas and Kai Fraeger Internasjonal imprint, but originally on Japanese label Locarno Records almost 10 years ago. PT's trademark "Diskomiks" burrows down hard on a vamped bassline adding Balearic electronics to the fray, whereas his "Ambiens" mix, as the titles track suggests, is devoid of beats and the bassline from his "Diskomiks". The first mix by Tough City Kids (Gerd Jansen & Phillip Lauer) re-rubs the originals synths and simplifies the tracks busy drums, opting for a Human League kick-snare routine instead. Their second mix boils down things even further with a remix that could have easily been labelled "bonus beats".

Review: Galathea is the new project by Massimo Napoli and title of his first album. Named after the Nymph Galathea, as a tribute to nature and sea, the album reveals a strong personality: a mix of spiritual sounds and African settings that lead the listener into a unique experience. From the meditative and trance-inducing deep house of 'Afrique'on the A side, through to the hypnotic and dub-laden polyrhythmicity of 'Sunset Dub' (alternative Vibe) on the flip, there's more spiritual and Afro house-inspired journeys into the aether as heard on 'This Is African Jazz'.

America (2:58)
Review: Grammy award winning sound engineer Chris Lord Alge produced the music that makes up this Acid Rain release back in 1986. It has been somewhat forgotten an or overlooked ever since, but now Thank You rightfully bring it back to the fore. The tunes have a real sense of character and include two versions of an oddball leftfield downtempo chugger. One is a wild flurry of machine sounds and occult synths and the other gets even more unhinged. As well as those is a patriotic America monologue that comes with a superbly overblown and emotional piano that is best taken with tongue firmly in cheek.

Review: Hell Yeah is a label that is right at the heart of the Balearic sound worldwide. It is studiously run by Italian Marco, who is also a deep-digging DJ himself, a part of the Balearic Gabba Soundsystem and also co-founder of much loved Berlin club night Buena Onda. The night's second compilation is coming soon but before that is this taster which gives you a great cross-section of the sounds to expect: leftfield disco, mature grooves, deep and slow acid workouts and plenty in between. Japanese master Calm really stands out here with his take on Gallo's 'Abysso.'

Review: Russian label Udacha are purveyors of dreamy and mysterious deep house. This new one by Gamayun is further testament to their current modus operandi. On the first side we have "Roundelay" with its warped and ethereal tropical vibe, assisting you in drifting away from it all just nicely. Next the soothing piano line of "All Tomorrows" backed by a wacky bassline and restrained rhythm section is equally as mesmerising. On the flip we have "Outlands" with its swirling, all consuming pads backed by sultry Latin style rhythms and that killer synth solo. Lastly there's "Oracle" with its sweet, late nineties deep house vibes that fans of Agnes and Quarion would be right into.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

Incantations (instrumental)
Review: G.A.N.G. was a short-lived studio project from Giorgio Giordano, Giorgio Dolce and Roberto Zanetti (Savage). In 1983 they released "Incantations", a plush cosmic disco burner that rides a slow tempo but hits heavy with its rich layers of synth and slick guitar licks. Best are giving it a fresh airing with this on-point reissue, bringing the chugging bass arps back into the fold of a sympathetic scene that celebrates just this kind of evocative, sensual slow-mo party fodder. The original mix elevates in the second half with a soaring vocal from Stefania Dal Pino, but if that doesn't appeal there's a purely instrumental take on the B side that focuses purely on the groove.

The work of producer Steve Coe and his partner Sheila Chandra as Monsoon, they combined elements of dub, dance and ethnic music, mainly released through their Indipop label. Their mesmerising and majestic track 'The Dream' is featured on this reissue by Emotional Rescue, as well as an edit of original B-side cut 'Meditasian' featuring a sublime sitar solo which will hypnotise you into submission, but cut down by a good 20 minutes compared to the original.

Sol Floresta
Review: Did Golf Channel boss it last year? Of course they did! How they gonna follow up in 2015 then? Keep on keeping on pal. Phil South's superb label prove they are not averse to the odd pun based contributor here with a debut for Cherry Garcia whose three track Vine Of Souls EP is perfect fodder to ease those out there still suffering from a New Year hangover. Sporting some artwork that looks like a discarded story board idea from The Mighty Boosh, the mysterious Cherry is evidently a talented soul on the basis of the sheer musicianship on display here. Golf Channel describe the title cut as "shapeshifting Brazilian dancehall-psych" and it sits well, bursting with a wonderful energy that will cause many to dance. Fans of Finis Africae are recommended to spend some time with the sumptuous closer "Sol Floresta".

Review: The Gardener is a new project from James Booth, a producer best known for his outings on 100% Silk and, most recently, Church. While he's renowned for making DJ-friendly club fodder, this new project has been designed as a vehicle for beautiful, nature-inspired electronic compositions fit for horizontal home listening sessions. He's provided a neat summary of what we can expect over coming months and years via epic A-side "Lilac Moore", a 19-minute journey into gentle drum machine bongos, squinting synthesizers, blossoming ambience and picturesque aural textures. It's rather brilliant, all told. The loved-up, lo-fi pleasantries continue on the flip, where the woozy deep house lullaby "Water Clock" and aural waterfall "Secret Trail" - all gentle arpeggio bass and cascading electronic melodies - stand out.

Review: The EBO label returns with Seaside Edits don Jean Claude Gavri sharing sides on a 12" with Italian contemporary Moplen that's slightly too vitamin D-infused in tone for the Winter months but will nice up any left leaning discotheque. Any self respecting disco scholar should have no issues IDing the source material here, Gavri taking on the Carly Simon classic "Why" and adding subtle Caribbean disco vibes to proceedings and occasionally dipping into the filters on this extended groove rendition. On the flip "The Riddum Slave" sees Luca Locatelli work similar magic, filling the Grace Jones cut of the near same name with all manner of dub fx, neat loops and hot breaks.

Review: First introduced to the wider world via the DJ Muscle series from WT Records, Parisian producer Geena has since found a welcome outlet for his music much closer to home in the shape of the excellent Antinote label. Last year's fairly unpronounceable Surowych Utworow EP was described as the label's "first DJ friendly record" by founder Quentin Vandewalle and subsequent Antinote releases have suggested they are comfortable with leaving Geena alone to occupy this space. Some six tracks deep, Mental DJ's Land equally suggests Geena is up to the task too with a brisk collection of floor ready productions that once again feature a playful reverence for straight up Chicago house classicism. The aptly titled acid laden monster "Watch Em Go Mental" is a particular highlight.

Begum
Review: Mehmet Aslan and Miajica represent some of the finest operators in Basel, and their Fleeting Wax label is on hand to represent what's good in the Swiss scene and beyond. On this latest release they turn to Eva Geist, who has previously been spotted on Macadam Mambo and Elestial Sound with her beautiful mix of synths and vocals, striking a chord between noirish synth pop and heads down club music. "Blumareciano" is a wonderfully seductive, slightly spooky stew of a track which San Proper then injects with his usual freaky energy to make for a more uptempo party version. Then Geist's "Begum" stretches over the B-side in a bubbling blend of delayed voices, tribal percussion and general outernational surrealism.

Review: Astonishingly, 11 years have now passed since Genius of Time (AKA Swedish duo Alexander Berg and Nils Krogh) broke through with their second single, the now revered 'Drifting Back' on Clone offshoot Royal Oak. While their output has been sporadic since, the pair continue to deliver occasional collections of quality deep house like this one on Oath, which marks their return to action after three years. Title track 'Sunswell' more than ives up to its title, with yearning electric piano motifs and sustained, starry chords riding a breakbeat-house beat and a toasty, warming bassline. 'Taurindo Shuffle' is a driving, organ-rich tribute to classic US deep house with a sub-heavy electro twist, while 'Purple Motus' is a colourful, rubbery and sun-soaked slab of retro-futurist deep house loveliness.

It presents a reissue of Nu Ambient Grooves by Chris Zippel aka Genuine, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its release. The productions were originally released on Bavarian imprint Ninetysix Sounds back in 1997 and is full of quality downtempo, IDM and acid sounds. Now the label is revisiting the material with a couple of finely selected versions, the first coming from Emotional regulars Woo, who dutifully inject "Marine" with their effervescent, otherworldly expressions and create a glistening masterpiece in the process. Felicia Atkinson then tackles "AA Cleo" and sends it out onto the horizon in a haze of reverb romanticism, muffled percussive rumbles and murmuring vocals.

You honestly would be hard pushed to know this was from all the way back then and now right now such is the richness of the sound design and the freshness of the rhythms. G.F.X. is an alias of Geoff Waterston, a producer and engineer from Whitley Bay on the North East English coast who spent his youth messing with electronics. Here he mixes up techno, dub, IDM and plenty more into a cosmic exploration with alien vocals and brilliantly synth craft. This is a cult record amongst those who know and rightly so.

Review: Jo Wallace's Ramrock label has always proved adept at blending reggae, dub and lovers rock with elements of jazz, soul and Balearic beats. You'll find a similar blend of sounds at the heart of the label's latest 12" - a fine, roots reggae style cover version of Aaron Neville's much-loved rare groove jam 'Hercules' by Asian Dub Foundation singer Ghetto Priest. His version (side A) is effortlessly soulful, with warming horns, clipped guitars and his own sublime vocals rising above a languid reggae riddim. Arguably even better is Darren Morris and Ashley Beedle's flipside remix, which adds bluesy pianos, hazy horns, vibrant Clavinet riffs and Ghetto Priest's vocals to a faithful rendition of the swinging, bumpin' groove that made Neville's 1973 version so addictive.

Now Thank You has put together this 12" package with three different versions of 'Don't Leave Me Alone.' The original dropped in 1987 and was an instant euro-pop classic. An OG copy on wax is tough to find these days so often fetches three figures. Soon as you hear the tune though you know why - it's effortlessly catchy with mounting tension and super creative vocals.

Review: Artless Cuckoo has coaxed a second release out of Ghia here and it's another stunning following the highlight collectable and sold out first offering. This one delves into Ghia's past and presents a super limited 7" with two unreleased recordings from 1985: At The Hilton. The group was made up of Lutz Boberg and Frank Simon and they later joined with singer Lisa Ohm and these tunes are taken from an old archive of tapes. They are brilliantly delicate and unassuming, with lo-fi drum machines, wispy chords and deep celestial pads all taking you on a gentle cosmic jazz trip.

I Keep On Making The Same Mistake (7:30)
String Reprise (3:00)
Review: A double A-side featuring 'RESIST!' and 'I Keep on Making the Same Mistake', Ghost Assembly's latest offering is less a release and more a protest on wax. Abigail Ward, the force behind Ghost Assembly, has crafted two distinct yet complementary tracks that pulse with raw energy and emotional depth. 'RESIST!' (Extended 12" Mix) is a primal scream against the injustices of the world. This 111bpm acid track is a visceral call to arms, primed for ALFOS and Optimo crowds. Think of it as a sonic Molotov cocktail: squelching 303s intertwine with a driving 707 beat, while unexpected bursts of Arabic melody add an intriguing layer of texture. It's like DJ Pierre jamming with Omar Souleyman in a Berlin basement. A fragmented vocal sample adds to the urgency, culminating in an icy string coda. The 'Utter Kunt Mix' of 'RESIST!' takes a detour into dub territory. It's a stripped-down, bass-heavy reimagining that draws inspiration from Sleng Teng rhythms. It's a hypnotic, almost meditative experience, where echoes of the Mission Impossible theme collide with the playful energy of Les Negresses Vertes and the raw sampling aesthetic of 'Duck Rock'. It's unexpected, yet strangely compelling. 'I Keep on Making the Same Mistake' (120bpm), on the other hand, explores the darker recesses of the human heart. It's a cinematic journey through heartbreak and regret. A glacial breakbeat provides the backdrop for a mournful bassline that tugs at the heartstrings. Hazel Grove's haunting vocals are fragmented and distorted, adding to the sense of unease, before being consumed by a wave of melancholic strings. A fleeting French voiceover adds a final touch of poignancy. The release concludes with a stripped-back string-a-pella version, a haunting reminder of the track's emotional core.

All The Way
Review: Active since 2007, Citizen Kane's Ghost Town label has put out some memorable disco edits for the dancefloor over the years from the likes of The Beat Broker, Jose Manuel and the Citizen himself; Bicep's take on "Strawberry Letter 23" by Brother's Johnson is worth digging for. The label's eighth release finds Body & Soul resident Andi Hanley laying down two Balearic nudgers on an African vibe on the A Side, with "Zulu" a particularly potent delay heavy cut. Our favourite however is "All The Way" from Citizen Kane which is the sort of grinding, disco sleaze that you can imagine DJ Harvey playing.
