Review: Stockholm-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Art Longo impresses here with Echowah Island, a new album sure to wind its way into your affections. It was crafted over years in his home studio and is "psychotropical pop" drawing deep inspiration from late 80s music and dub. The album's lush soundscape evokes orange sunsets and ocean breezes and is layered with spring reverb, space echo and wah-wah effects that smooth out the edges as the steady pulse of vintage drum machines moves things on down low. A standout feature is Claudio Jonas, whose ethereal vocals recall classic French femme fatale singers of the 60s. Her poetic, kaleidoscopic lyrics add to a nostalgic dream world that gently bends reality and makes his both escapist and thought-provoking.

Review: The classic sound of British library music is the inspiration for this third volume in ATA's The Library Archive series. It's another magnificently seductive and sophisticated collection of funk, jazz, spy-thriller soundtracks, late-night lounge moments and evocative atmospherics. Blaxploitation era composers such as Willie Hutch and Melvin Van Peebles and the genius of Roy Bud are particular preference points in this one and each cut is brilliantly authentic and lovingly crafted. This series started back in 2019 and four years later it is still going strong.

Review: Tropical is Brazilian samba legend Jorge Ben Jor's fifteenth album and it blends unreleased tracks with reimagined covers like 'Taj Mahal' and 'Pais Tropical.' This superb mix of tunes embraces more pop and Western influences than before and hints at his later shift toward the World-Dance sound of the 1980s. Review: The Birthday Massacre, hailing from Canada, command a bracing gothic blend of 80s electronica and aggressive guitar work. Formed in 2000 as Imagica, the band is led by vocalist Chibi and guitarists Rainbow and Michael Falcore. They debuted in London, Ontario, before moving to Toronto and rebranding, with the 2002 self-released Nothing and Nowhere inducting us into their horror-comedic sonic aesthetic, drawing on macabre cabaret and Grande-Guignol rock. Review: Landmarks remains among one of the most eminent ambient albums of our time, and this isn't the first time it's been reissued since its first release in 2018 either. Something in the way the album presents itself, and was formed and marketed - the easygoing simplicity of the artists' real names Will Long and John Daniel; the inspiratory inputs of Peter Weir and Paul Theroux; the visionary character of its track titles, such as 'The signs are everywhere', 'Indistinguishable from magic' and 'S-shaped isthmus' - have all likely lent to its enduring success. However, all these factors are but mere orbital ejecta around its core appeal, which is the soul-quelling ambient music at its center. Only occasionally peppered with the odd bosomy vocal sample - through which allusions to innovation, exploration and the dangers of inner contemplative adventure are heard - we are once again reminded of the boundless wells of beauty unearthed by the Japan resident maestro of chill and the ambient verderer, in combo.

Review: The Chicago Gangsters, a family-led group originally from Akron, Ohio, span multiple genres from gritty funk to smooth soul. Despite that name, their work largely embodied a mixture of raw disco grooves and emotive ballads. Their 1976 sophomore release, which includes a memorable rendition of Eugene McDaniel's 'Feel Like Making Love' and the title track 'Gangster Love,' stands as a key part of their legacy. This track, notably their first 12" single, hints at their influence in shaping the disco funk sound of the era. Review: In the late summer of 2019, DJ Rocca and Chris Coco spent time together at the intimate La Casella festival in Umbria, Italy, where they chatted about Italo disco, the Rimini/Riccione riviera in the 90s and classic Italian clubs. Inspired by their conversations and imagined memories of scenes they weren't part of, they set out to make the music which over time, evolved into CocoRocca DiscoTeca, an imaginary retro-futuristic club blending past influences with future possibilities. It draws on dub, house and disco and is now resented on this wonderfully escapist full length which starts slow and dreamy, raises the pulse then slows down to a nice emotive finish. A fine reimagine of some classic sounds.

Review: The cult favourite Dark Entries hits 15 in style here and celebrates in the only way it knows how - with more great music. This time it is the legendary synth-punk yahoos Crash Course in Science aka Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny who are in the spotlight. The group formed back in 1979 and set out to make music using toy instruments and kitchen appliances. Their punk-y, aggressive, angular sound soon found a hardcore fan base and gave rise to big tunes like 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns.' In 1981 they recorded Near Marineland, a full-length that never actually saw the light of day but does now and shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory.

Review: 18 years after making their debut on Paper Recordings, Jim Baron, Chris Todd and Danielle Moore show no signs of flagging. While it's been a while since their last studio album - the 2020 Vision released When We On in 2011 - they've hardly been shirking, complimenting a punishing schedule of live and DJ gigs with regular studio sessions. Walk Talk Dance Sing, the band's eight full-length proper, sees them in fine form, delivering warm, rich and hugely enjoyable blends of deep house, disco, boogie, soul and funk. There are few surprises, but you wouldn't expect any. Instead, the 11 tracks focus on what they do best, and few do it better. Not everything is quite as magical as recent single "Witch Doctor", but highlights are pleasingly plentiful.

Review: Mark Grusane presence on Disctechno brings with it a compilation of five unique house tracks from Chicago and Detroit-based producers, as you will probably have guessed from the title. The A-side features DJ Slush's synth-driven 'Memory Blank' and Deon Jamar's bass-heavy 'AYYYO' which offer different but both killer sounds. The B-side opens with Jordan Zawideh's reverb-drenched 'Axolotls' followed by Grusane's intense, atonal 'The Recoil' and concludes with Thomas Xu's groovy 'School Street.' All of these are the sort of off-kilter sounds you would expect of these revered and enduring electric hotbeds. Raw, stripped-down and authentic, this is the contemporary Midwest underground.

Review: Galcher Lustwerk is one of those artists who has a completely diehard fan base. And for good reason, he is an idiosyncratic producer who collides myriad different sounds. Rap, funk, blues, beatboxing, techno, electro and bass are all fair game to him. His fist ever mixtape was a stream of sonic consciousness that has never before been released on vinyl. But now Ghostly International step up and press it to two 12"s, with both black and coloured green versions as well as a CD version available. It was a fine announcement of his arrival back then and still stands apart today.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey broke into the common conscious with her unique and individual approach to alternative rock, and she's managed to maintain that aural autonomy throughout a storied career that has simultaneously found favour in the musical mainstream and refused to stray far from the leftfield. A difficult balance to strike, this, her eighth solo studio album, is indicative of that point. There's nothing here not to enjoy, but there's very little here you could predict.

Doing away with introspect, for the most part anyway, and refocusing attention away from pianos, it's a rousing indie collection that further cements the artist as one of Britain's national treasures.

Review: American Bobbi Humphrey is one of the most well loved jazz flautists. She turned out plenty of vibrant albums, none less so than this, Fancy Dancer, which was her fifth. It came on Blue Note in 1975 and is full of all killer no filler gold. It also saw her, along with producers the Mizell Brothers aka Larry and Fonce, come up with a fresh new largely instrumental funk sound. Weaving in everything from world music to soul-jazz to club music to pop, it's a widescreen sound that is packed with uplifting flute from Humphrey and lush production that reveals something new with each listen.

Review: Last year BBE released the latest project from nu jazz titans Jazzanova. Strata Records (The Sound Of Detroit Reimagined By Jazzanova) was an ambitious project which took the formidable troupe into new territory while doing great credit to the hugely important original works. Now we're being treated to a single pulled from the album with some additional remixes of 'Saturday Night Special'. The first of these comes from DJ Amir, who also served as executive producer on the album project, working alongside Re.decay, and on the flip you can hear Atlanta legend Kai Alce doing his thing with that high grade house sound that just gets better and better as the years go by.

Review: Female vocalist Sharon Jones continues to fly the flag for raw femme funk with her fifth album for US label Daptone, ably assisted by the labels in-house band - The Dap Kings. The new record is a collection of rare tracks and B-Sides going back as far as 2002. The only new track appears to be the Motown-esque "New Shoes", which, like the rest of the album, could be mistaken as a lost soul classic.

Review: From their early jazz roots to their pop picking party time peak via their late 70s dabbles with disco, Kool & The Gang have dominated airwaves and dancefloors en mass for over 50 years, and this is one of most comprehensive collections of their work ever curated. Obviously all the big hits are present and correct but it's the lesser spotted (but still just as floor poking) jams that really make this collection shine; the hip wriggling "Slick Superchick", the swooning mournful chord changes of "Too Hot" and the sleaziest bassline they ever laid down in the form of "Higher Plane" are but three stone cold killing examples. Good times...

Review: This release, which was recorded for Bremen Radio in 1971, features four extended tracks showcasing German pioneers Kraftwerk in a very different light from their later work. The short-lived lineup of Schneider, Rother and Dinger fused electric guitar with their then-signature electronic sounds and it gives rise to unusual, exciting and innovative music. Half of the tracks here, as hardcore fans will recognise, are drawn from their debut album, Kraftwerk 1, and the recording quality is excellent. This release also includes full recording details along with extensive sleeve notes that help offer a fascinating glimpse into Kraftwerk's early, experimental sound before their more iconic and pioneering electronic phase.

Review: The original Bridgit Mendler soundtrack to the citrine teen drama movie of the same name sees a full version on vinyl LP this spring. Notable not only for its inclusion in the contemporary musical film, but also for its chart-topping success, the ten songs that make up the many acts of this high-school drama were destined to charm the pubescent masses, coinciding with the film's overarching theme of the school's students transcending use of after-school detention to musical effect, in order to overcome their personal struggles. Imagine Glee meets The Breakfast Club; a cabal of songwriters including Ali Dee, Maria Christensen, Bryan Todd and Jeannie Lurie lay down an array of sure-to-be hits for Mendler to perform on behalf of the cast here.

Review: Sudden Records debut Les Hommes' latest LP Si Cosi, describing the record as a set of "pulsar-driven groovetronics, folky modalisms in waltz time; dreamvitations to the cine-lounge." The three piece combo known as The Men have been an active force on the easygoing London underground, having first made their debut in a tiny club in Soho in 1994. They've since occupied the proscenium of lounge and club, relaxedly dropping three LPs and four EPs since then. This fourth LP brings the latest face of lounge music to the fore, with a set of eleven more careful but languorous compositions. Deploying instrumentation from Lowrey organ to bass clarinet to electric piano, the sensibility throughout is one of disbarred ease, best felt on the most muted among the cuts, such as the cricket-chirping modal jazzer 'Veronique'.

Review: It would be fair to say that The New York Disco Orchestra's 1978 album Reverie - Get Up and Dance is not the most celebrated set around, though it has long been on the radar of many well-funded record collectors. The album was the work of brothers John and Rocco Giamundo and was originally released in miniscule numbers in the US, Belgium and Japan. If you dig high-quality orchestral disco, it's well worth a listen. Particularly impressive is jazzy opener 'Reverie', a solo-packed dancefloor interpretation of a Claude Debussy composition, heavyweight disco-funk workout 'Get Up and Dance' and epic B-side opener 'The Wat We Were', a wonderfully lengthy and over-the-top orchestral disco number that's just the right side of cheesy.
