  7. Four Lonely Words (CPUB dub) (4:20)
  8. Strong Like Nature (CPUB dub) (5:12)
Review: AKSK is the collaborative project consisting of Adda Kaleh and Diego Herrera aka Suzanne Kraft. They present their debut LP on Running Back entitled 'Things We Do' which was recorded over the last several years between Kaleh's hometown of Bucharest, as well Los Angeles and Amsterdam - where Herrera divides his residence. His neon-lit and mysterious mood music that's typically awash in FM synthesis creates the perfect backdrop for Kaleh's captivating vocals on tracks like "Breaking", the sensual slow burner "Work" or the low slung and balmy balearica of "Special Times & Places". Coober Pedy University Band (Tornado Wallace and William Paxton) also provide remixes of the tracks "Four Lonely Words" and "Strong Like Nature".

  3. Manuelle (7:12)
  4. Robodancer (6:46)
Review: Greek DJ and producer Bodj links with his pal and frequent musical sparring partner Roksi for another of their buttery smooth minimal house EPs. This outing is their first time on the fledgling OGE label and it finds them in fine fashion. 'Futurama' is the tightly woven opener, with bass plunging deep down below the frictionless house drums. 'In The Meantime' is powered by a bigger, more prominent bassline and icy hi hats that glide up top and get you in a trance, while 'Manuelle' is another dreamy late night number perfect for close knit dance floors and cosy basements. 'Robodancer' brings the Millsian melodies for a fantastic finale.

Not Complicated
Cat: ATA 020. Rel: 19 Jun 19
  1. Peeped Booths (8:56)
  2. Klezmorim Telepathique (10:23)
Review: Pepe Bradock's recent album "What A Mess!" might have been a cut-and-paste collage of weirdo track fragments, occasional rhythms and spaced-out ambient aesthetics, but the veteran Parisian producer is still capable of crafting killer dancefloor cuts when he feels like it. This weirdo deep house two-tracker proves as much, with A-side "Peeped Booths" offering a near perfect fusion of hypnotic bass, locked-in grooves, ultra-deep riffs, angular electronic noises and strange vocal samples that have been manipulated within an inch of their lives. It's more than a bit good. "Klezmorim Telepathique" sees Bradock raise the tempo and intensity via a bumpin' fusion of panicked electronic motifs, paranoid bass and fizzing synthesizer flashes.

  1. Roy Keane (6:49)
  2. Space Dub (8:06)
  3. Club Orange (6:29)
Review: To kick-start 2018, Spleandor and Squalour owners and sometime Dirt Crew Recordings artists Brame & Hamo serve up and trio of high-grade deep house treats. They begin with "Roy Keane", a chunky hybrid of tech-tinged deep house heaviness and celebratory orchestral disco that hits home harder than one of the Irish midfielder's two-footed tackles. The track that follows, "Space Dub", brilliantly joins the dots between throbbing Detroit techno futurism and intergalactic deep house bliss, while closer "Club Orange" is a shimmering slice of peak-time deep house complete with sampled party atmos, swirling strings and throbbing analogue bass.

  4. Stevn Aint Leavn - "Spiff" (7:11)
Review: Berlin deep house heroes Cinthie and Stevn Aint Leavn are back on their ever reliable Beste Modus imprint for its ninth edition and they aren't messing around on this one. Quality classic house vibes all the way - a timeless Windy City vibe dominates the A side courtesy of Cinthie, who serves up the sultry and swing-fuelled late night groover "Everything I Say" before taking it back to '94 with the dusty and soulful "Good For You & Me". On the flip, Stevn Aint Leavn is in fine form, too, particularly on the moody and bass-driven back room dub "Quins".

  1. The 90's Generation (8:56)
  2. Cold Touch (8:08)
Review: Priku's Atipic Lab turns to local Romanian artist Cosmjn who returns in a fine vein of form. He makes no bones about his intentions and influences on the opener 'The 90's Generation' which is a dark, stark, cold tech beat that is albeit inviting. The hi hats spin endlessly and the bass is blippy and bleepy. 'Cold Touch' then heads off into the cosmos with roomy pads and an airy groove that is tinged with electro goodness. Both of these are timeless cuts that will work on a wide range of dance floors.

Break Up To Make Up EP
  1. The Break Up
  2. The Make Up
Review: After a break through 2012 with EPs on Dirt Crew, Murmur and Freerange, Detroit Swindle take a second bite out of their 2013 cherry with the Break Up to Make Up EP on new label Heist. The A-side is "The Break Up", a sidechaning rollercoaster of sampled, looped and filtered vocals that bounce of bit-staccato Rhodes, silky hats and tight drums. On the B-side is a deeper "The Break Up" featuring breathy, feminine vocals similar to Australian and Third Strike act The Tortoise. Deep and flowing house music for the dancefloor.

Down (12")
Cat: PERLON 125. Rel: 26 Jun 20
  1. Vormlock (12:03)
  2. Down (16:02)
Review: Disordered Rhythm Metronomy may be a puzzling (and, let's face it, rather strange) artistic alias, but the two men behind the project, Ricardo Villalobos and Edward, have produced some of the most distinctive leftfield techno of the last decade. As a result, you'd expect their first joint EP to be a killer... and it is. A-side "Vormlock" is a rubbery, off-kilter treat, with the experienced duo peppering an elastic synth bassline and sparse, skittish drums with glitchy stabs, tipsy lead lines and all manner of wonky, out-of-this-world noises. Over on the flipside you'll find title track "Down", a deeper and dreamier chunk of spacey minimalism in which typical Villalobos style percussion and softly squelching bass comes cloaked in some suitably intergalactic synthesizer chords.

Cat: PAMPA 031. Rel: 18 Apr 18
  1. Pick Up (12" extended disco version) (9:57)
  2. The Love Truck (9:47)
Review: When it comes to crafting lengthy, disco fired dancefloor treats, DJ Koze has previous form. His "Extended Disco Version" of Lapsley's "Operator" quickly became a White Isle anthem in the summer of 2016, and we fully expect "Pick Up" to be one of the disco-house hits of 2018. Based around spine-tingling samples from a heart-felt, orchestrated 1970s disco treat - think Tom Trago's "Use Me Again", and you're close - the veteran producer slowly builds the pressure before really letting loose in the closing stages. B-side "The Love Truck" is an altogether deeper, dubbier and dreamier affair, seemingly designed for leisurely warm-up sets and gentle, early morning shuffling.

  1. Architects Design (6:44)
  2. Si (6:08)
  3. Rhode Island (7:50)
  4. Dynamics (8:01)
Review: Rising UK artist Jake Flory impresses with this new EP on Animal Crossing. It is an EP packed with club-ready tech house cuts, but each one overflows with charming sonic details and a playful sense of charm that elevates them way above merely functional fodder. Importantly, the drum programming is tight, slick and futuristic on all four offerings, with 'Architects Design' also doused in trippy late night neons and waif-like pads. 'Si' is all about the tech funk, and 'Rhode Island' is a resales, kinetic rhythm with freaky vocals and more woozy pads. 'Dynamics' closes out in deep and heads down fashion, perfect for the afters.

Review: Frankey & Sandrino are long time Watergate regards but have somehow not landed on the Berlin clubs own label yet. Now that changes with Nova, three tracks of dark and innovative tech house that come with a remix from Tiefschwarz. All the tracks stay low and subtle, with "Chimes" lead by a mysterious lead, "Nova" laced up with some soft, undulating acid and "Black Hole" getting a little more freaky with trippy bleeps and colourful synth chords. For their part, Tiefschwarz offer the most driving version complete with some dusty breaks

Vick Lavender perfectly embodies the label's sound with timeless grooves and lush melodies that will make people groove at any time of day or night. The 11-plus minute opus "Shifting Gears" is a real trip in the mould of Ron Trent thanks to its spiritual synth workouts, while "Here In Spirit Sid" picks up the pace with more prickly drums but plenty of golden layers of colour that will light up your soul.

  1. Track (8:17)
  2. Track 2 (6:48)
  3. Track 3 (6:48)
Review: The Mountain People have a cult status amongst minimal house heads for good reason - their approach feeds the scene's finest parties, but they always retain a certain kink in their tracks that deviates from formulaic genre studies. So it goes on this latest drop on their own label, which leads in with a stunning long form track that packs a nuanced groove into the low end and plays with a limber acid line over the top, holding the filter down low and only opening it up at the choicest of moments. There's also some bouncier, swinging monosynth machine funk to be enjoyed, all executed with originality and subtlety - essential ingredients for the best minimal house.

  1. Swimming In Sound (6:24)
  2. Say When (7:04)
  3. Word On The Street (6:53)
Review: The House Puff label started out as a vehicle for founder DJ Steaw's on-point productions, but in recent times he's used it more to showcase the work of other like-minded artists. On this EP, he introduces us to a new member of the extended family: Manhattan-based debutant Coral O'Connor. The New Yorker sets out his stall successfully via A-side 'Swimming in Sound', an undeniably funky tech-house roller rich in spacey synth sounds, swinging beats, oddball vocal samples and undulating bass. 'Say When' sees him move further towards a slicker, smoother, tech-tinged deep house sound, while closing cut 'Word on the Street' is an expertly crafted exploration of the deep and melodious end of the contemporary tech-house spectrum.

Review: Under the now familiar Octo Octa alias, Brooklyn-based Maya Bouldry-Morrison has been one of the key artists in defining the 100% Silk sound. After three albums and a clutch of 12" singles for Amanda Brown's label, Octa Octa brings the breezy, feelgood take on vintage house to Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint. Those familiar with their style will find much to enjoy; from the chiming melodies, feelgood breakdowns and swinging drums of 'More Times', to the piano-driven revivalist Italian house rush of 'Fever Dream', and deliciously deep 'Take Me To The Dark'. Best of all, though, is 'Dresses', a thrillingly humid workout full of dreamy chords and pitched-down, rave-era breakbeats.

Review: British producer Gerry Read returns with some roughed-up soul/disco workouts on this new one for Pampa, all reinterpreted via his idiosyncratic, lo-fi style. We're loving infectious, dusty opener "It'll All Be Over" with its sweet soul vocal samples, jazzy guitar licks, blocky Rhodes chords. That's not all, label chief DJ Koze contributes another misty-eyed disco-house remix on the flip, careful not to deviate too much from the original, but injecting it with just the right amount of dancefloor dynamics. We're also loving Read's second cut, "Satyricon", with its intoxicating and hypnotic melody, driven by a deep mid-tempo groove peppered with sultry Spanish phrases.

Niv Arzi & Dori Sadovnik seek to discover new grounds and sounds, inviting local musicians, showcasing indigenous instruments and presenting workshops for youth music schools. Previous editions have taken them to Africa in 2018, Vietnam last year and now to explore the exotic sounds of India. Tablas, pan pipes and unique string sounds collide on the mesmerising slow burner that is 'Pad Yoga Raga', trance out to the tunnelling and cerebral 'Mumbai Syndrom' and get deep into the groove on the hazy desert campfire vibe of 'Little Prince' (Bangalore Rave Version).

Their new offering 'Sandpaper' is a proper serving of funky soul power, featuring Lidell's unmistakeable vocals, creamy Rhodes keys and swing-fuelled beats. Review: Hot on the heels of her first appearance on Kai Alce's NDATL imprint, Roberta returns home to Night Moves. It's another quietly impressive collection of warming, immersive deep house cuts from the Brooklyn-based producer all told. It sees her cannily combine organic and electronic instrumentation on a quartet of groovy, sumptuously produced workouts. Check first the bongo-rich, Rhodes-laden vibe of deliciously hazy opener 'Nothing More', before bathing in the chunky, locked-in grooves, spacey synths and raw Clavinet stabs of tidy loop jam 'I Want Cha'. Over on side B, 'You Don't Say' sounds like a classic Soundstream disco-house number with added percussion and electric piano stabs, while 'Because I Can' is another languid, Ron Trent influenced number that sports some seriously good freestyle vocals.

Versatile veteran I:Cube is arguably the star of the show. Not only does he deliver a deliciously saucer-eyed take on "Today" - think spacey, left-of-centre synth-pop fused with dream house aesthetics and lolloping electro beats - but also a slightly more tribal-sounding "Beats" version full of dub delays that's equally as inspired. Elsewhere, Move D provides a darker, thickset deep house version of "Today", while Scandolearic overlord Prins Thomas turns "Trance Encounters" into a bubbling, otherworldly epic rich in bustling acid lines, descending melodies and sun-kissed guitars.
