Let's Go Dancing
Let's Go Dancing
Review: Layton Giordani reigns as one of the thing-pins of "techno's new school", and his latest collab with Tiga and Audion is a neat testament to this fact. 'Let's Go Dancing' indeed does make clever use of breathy effects and rising reeses, but the track's main message - its exhortation to go dancing with us - is best conveyed by its vocal message, which, by the sheer power of repetitiousness alone, grabs us by the arm and corrals us into the dance whether we like it or not. A rabble-rousing, slick new techno rumpus, you won't be allowed out of the nightclub for as long as this one plays back.

Still So High (6:39)
First Blood (6:45)
Review: The Kompakt affiliated Kolsch presents the second release on his new Ipso imprint. A collaborative project, his recent club residency in Cologne took the same name and he's back with a brand new collaboration with Turbo head honcho - Tiga. Said to be recorded in a couple days in Kolsch's Copenhagen studio, the pair present three surefire cuts that are ready to burn up any dancefloor - at all hours. From the evocative dancefloor drama of "HAL" with its powerful and catchy analogue melody, some surging adrenaline on the fierce and functional "Still So High" and "First Blood" on the flip: a pounding peak-time weapon that's jam packed full of driving bass and trippy synth textures galore.

Blondes Have More Fun (Tiga Elevation mix) (6:11)
Blondes Have More Fun (instrumental) (6:20)
Review: Those who copped Tiga's recent album, No Fantasy Required, should recognize "Blondes Have More Fun". A deep and dreamy slice of contemplative synth-pop, it offered a fitting conclusion to the well-received set. This second 12" of remixes contains a handy instrumental of the ear-pleasing original version, plus headline grabbing rubs from Tiga and The Black Madonna. The latter's Immaterial Girl Remix is particularly good, and sees the Chicagoan re-inventing the track as a fine chunk of synth bass-fuelled analogue house warmth (albeit with more dancefloor energy than your average Larry Heard track). Tiga's own Elevation Mix, which contains all of his evocative vocal performance, is also something of a bittersweet, floor-friendly treat.

Pleasure From The Bass (Subb-an remix)
Review: We're more used to seeing Tiga in full-on electro mode but this time he's taken a shot at the techier side of the spectrum with his first release for the UK's Crosstown Rebels. Title track, "The Picture" is very much a surprise, where we see Tiga enter a thumping parade of raw-as-hell drums and masterfully executed bass lines - BIG! Subb-an takes care of remixing "Pleasure From The Bass" - actually the more electro-inclined of the two, adding some funky, late-night vocals to the groove.

Love Don't Dance Here Anymore (C2 remix 1)
Love Don't Dance Here Anymore (C2 remix 2)
Review: Turbo impresario Tiga rounds off his ambitious remix project for 2009 album Ciao! with a 12? boasting two remixes from Detroit don Carl Craig. In the past 12 months both artists have explored new ground, with Craig remixing/re-editing acts as disparate as Zero 7, Hot Chip and Ramadanman & Appleblim, while Tiga has called on the likes of Martyn, Adam Beyer, Matias Aguayo, Efdemin, Mathew Jonson, Motor City Drum Ensemble and more to rework tracks from Ciao! Unsurprisingly, Craig's two remixes of "Love Don't Dance Here Anymore" offer a suitably throbbing take on the original. The first version retains the vocal and lays down a pounding 5am warehouse techno kick drum beneath it, while the flipside offering sees Craig on a more progressive dub tip. In a word, huge.

Woke (Justin Cudmore remix) (7:22)
Review: Turbo boss Tiga is up next for his esteemed imprint with new single "Woke". As you've come to expect from the man, this is yet another perfectly pop-inflected experiment in dance music, which employs a moody/electro influence and an all round neon-lit arrangement. Add to this his cheeky/risque vocal style and noir attitude. It also receives a bunch of killer remixes too. Portland based newcomer Vakkuum (who appeared for diffusion imprint Twin Turbo earlier in the year) delivers a dry and guttural lo-fi techno rendition, Spanish legend Eduardo de la Calle serves up a typically tripped out and tunnelling rendition plus New York City acid freak Justin Cudmore installs a much welcomed retrofit for the track. This is the Montreal legend's third release so far in 2017 and was recorded at Lost Star Studios before he returned to Ibiza for the summer. All killer, no filler!

Crushed By Meditation (8:29)
Review: Techno heavyweights Tiga and Matthew Dear team up again to follow up 2013's massive anthem "Let's Go Dancing" and the terrific 'Nightclub' EP from a few years back. Their new collaboration "This Is a Dream" is a tunneling and low-slung trip, which according to Tiga the Turbo chief is 'an epic poem, an immunity passport to the boundless dimensions that lay beyond the veil of slow wave sleep'. On the flip, "Crushed By Meditation" has Audion all over it on this strobed-out and psychedelic stomper that calls to mind the same vibe as his mid noughties hits such as "Mouth To Mouth" or "Kisses" - totally massive!

Review: Tiga and Boys Noize have been in and out of each other's productions for years now, and if you cast your mind back to 2006 you'll find Alex Rida's epic remix to Tiga's "Move My Body". Boys Noize has appeared on various Turbo compilations over the years too, but now comes the collaboration we've been waiting for: "100". Naturally Tiga's semi-ironic vocals are laced throughout the track, while acid synths, throttled by a beefed up and jacking bassline, rock out to clashing hi-hats. And for some extra pulsating warehouse techno action, check out "Jam#1". Make some noise.

Review: Tiga's stripped-down electronic funk and Hudson Mohawke's bold beats share a common threadian idea Tiga dubs "hardcore romance." Recorded in Los Angeles, their collaboration evolved across various tracks that ultimately shaped their debut album, L'Ecstasy. Turbo revisits the project with a series of club-ready remixes featuring Keinemusik's Reznik, Montreal duo Priori & Patrick Holland as Jump Source and Berghain regular Quelza. These hard-hitting remixes are pressed loudly on a striking 12" picture disc featuring iconic imagery from renowned photographer Wolfgang Tillmans.

Feel The Rush (Johnny Aux remix)
Review: Tiga and Hudson Mohawke team up for a decided collaboration with rapper Channel Tres, for an intense back-of-the-club sonic laser show in the form of 'Feel The Rush'. First surfacing in Tiga's recent Boiler Room set, Feel The Rush sparked a full-on ID frenzy prior to release; the original track harnesses a signature Tres vocal over a low-slung LMZ groove, while the three ensuing retakes from Honey Dijon, Mr. G and Johnny Aux of Paranoid London provide extra selective, serious fleshings-out, making especially stark use of Tres' laid-back, hip-house vocals.

The Cocoon anniversary celebrations continue with a fourth special EP serving up some big techno sounds. Two real heavyweights pair up on the opener with Tiga & Roman Flugel going hard on their rugged analogue workout 'Look To The Sky.' Luke Slater aka Planetary Assault Systems then layers up his signature synth sounds into a sleek and futuristic exploration of outer space on 'Raww.' Last of all, Polish mainstay Jacek Sienkiewicz amps up the energy levels with his intense, rolling techno pulses and molten synth lines with 'Digitavi,' making this another fine representation of what Cocoon has always stood for.

Review: The creative partnership between Tiga & Hudson Mohawke expresses a mutual love of "hardcore romance," a liminal state where the bounds between euphoria, melancholy and the raw power of friendship disintegrate completely. Recorded in Los Angeles from 2019-2023, these commonalities ebbed and flowed through various recording sessions, culminating in their debut album - L'Ecstacy - the sounds in which "all come from the same place, the same musical universe," in Hudson Mohawke's own words. Referencing the album's locus of bouncy elasticity and cinematic gloss - "we're building a particular kind of zone where it all fits together. A place lost in time." With guest appearances by luminaries like Abra, Channel Tres, and Jesse Boykins III, as well as album artwork by Wolfgang Tillmans, the result is delivered with "no apology, no cynicism, no irony, no winking."

Review: HudMo is on rampant form at the moment, firing off collaborations left, right and centre and, as usual, never missing. That said, this project feels like something very special indeed, as he doubles down on kinship with Canadian techno legend Tiga to make an album in thrall to the surge of feelings that hit us when we submit to the possibilities of the night. It's a romantic kind of techno that comes on like early B12 or Artificial Intelligence-era techno in places, but there's also some crafty hooks and flamboyance as you would rightly expect from such a heavyweight studio pairing.
