Upsetters - "My Girl" (3:14)
Review: Busty Brown's early reggae cover of the Temptations' smash hit "My Girl" from 1964 is presented here in all its glory. It's a glorious makeover that has soaring trumpets filled with optimism, deep cut drums that wriggle and rumble nonstop, as well as Brown's buttery, authentic vocals up top. Legendary dub outfit The Upsetters then take care of an instrumental on the flip side that goes a little slower and more purposefully about its business. It's not often that a cover outshines the original but in the case of this one, that might be what's happening here.

Lifestyle (Donut mix) (3:26)
Lifestyle (Serious mix) (3:31)
Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

A Minute Too Late (7:34)
United Spiritual Singers - "Not A Minute Too Late" (Tom Noble mix) (6:50)
Review: Since 2020, Athens of the North's in-house band, East Coast Love Affair, has been serving up increasingly impressive slabs of retro-futurist brilliance. Previously, they've turned their hand to spacey jazz-funk/house fusion ('Don't Be Afraid'), deep vocal house ('Without You'), disco-funk ('Confrontations') and lovers rock (a superb cover of Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain'). This time round, they join forces with veteran gospel-soul choir United Spiritual Singers to deliver an incendiary disco-funk cover of the outfit's obscure (and recently reissued) 'A Minute Too Late'. The scorching, club-ready original mix comes accompanied by a superb Tom Noble rework that re-images the track as a Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style proto-house heater full of reverb-laden vocals, echoing drum machine percussion and addictive synth-bass.

The Highest Bidder (3:20)
Hard World (3:33)
Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

Review: Izipho Soul is a gold standard of high quality and heart aching soul music. JDs Time Machine ft Cleveland P Jones is another great mix of indie soul and Jazz in animated picture sleeve. Both of these magnificent versions of this lovely track are a few years old but are making their vinyl debut here. 'Kiss Of Freedom' is a grand affair with golden, high class production with noodling bass, sunny chords and a soaring vocals backed with some great harmonies. The long version draws the whole thing out for even more extended bliss.

I Hear Music In The Streets (LV Classic Boogie mix) (6:33)
Review: Anyone with even the smallest interest in disco and boogie will have heard Unlimited Touch's 1980 classic 'I Hear Music In The Streets'. It's a stone-cold killer that should be approached with caution. Louie Vega, of course, is respectful, and these versions are not remixes but rather re-makes, with the Masters at Work man being joined in the studio by all manner of guest musicians and vocalists - including original members of Unlimited Touch. The standout version is the near 11-minute A-side 'Touch Mix', an all-live post-disco version rich in classic disco bass, guitars, electric piano keys and spacey chords. The short-ish 'NYC Expansions Dub' cans the vocals and emphasises the various instrument solos, while the 'LV Classic Boogie Mix' is an almost note-for-note remake of the 1980 original.

I Hear Music In The Streets (LV Classic Boogie mix) (6:33)
Review: It would be fair to say that post-disco outfit Unlimited Touch's 1980 single "I Hear Music In the Streets" is one of the greatest boogie/electrofunk records of all time. Louie Vega clearly agrees, because late last year he decided to gather together the remaining members of Unlimited Touch and record a fresh 2020 version. The A-side "Touch Mix" is the bomb. It features a more organic-sounding disco-boogie groove than the 1980 original, with delicious guitars, bass and electric piano/organ underpinning seriously good group vocals from the sometime Prelude-signed outfit. Over on the flip, Vega serves up an electric piano solo-laden dub mix, as well as a "Classic Boogie" take that naturally sounds very similar to the band's much-loved original version.

Review: Marlui Miranda's dedication to native Brazilian music goes four decades and one doctorate deep and right now Optimo are paying homage. Celebrating her 1995 album Ihu: Todos os Sons, a collection of tribe songs from northern Brazil, the Jaboti tribe's "Tchori Tchori" is a shimmering, reflective trip laced with staccato, bird-like vocals and chiming harmonic percussion. Enticing, beguiling and ripe for remix extension from Rio's Joutro Mundo on the B. Beautiful.

Review: Mukatsuku presents the second volume of killer Ghanaian highlife/afrofunk monsters this time focusing on two artists legendary in the genre. First up first time on a 45 from 1980 is '' What Is Life '' from the Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu album ''Conflict Nkru! ''. Amazing brass, flute and afrocentric rhythms lay the path for the track once heard never forgotten. On the flip first time ever on a 45 Pat Thomas who features on volume 1 of the series comes correct with possibly the best version (and there are a few ) of ''Gyae Su'' . With its jangly african guitar licks and infectious chorus lines the feel good factor is set to maximum. Another dope afro burner on Mukatsuku and sure to sell out fast. 500 hand numbered copies and no repress. As supported by DJ Koco from Japan and Jonathon Moore (Coldcut )

Review: Super Spicy celebrates getting to five years old in the best way it knows how - with a new release, of course. This one comes on translucent re wax and brings together a blend of seasoned and fresh talent including Hotmood, Shalvoy, Diana Swan, Musta, Adam Nova and Uptown Funk. These tracks do a fine job of reflecting the label's dedication to innovation right from the off. Musta's 'Fresco' is a nice jumbled percussive disco funker, Hotmood's 'Ayaaa' rides on some electric synth waves and Shalvo's 'Dancin' is a smooth cruise for the midnight hours. On the flip side are three more vibrant and vivacious disco dancers for good times only.

Ulysses Crocket - "Funky Resurgence" (3:44)
Review: There's a mild Latin theme running across both sides of the latest Big Crown 45". First up Paul Ramous covers cult Latin funk band Mandrill's "Fence Walk" with a surging, urgent sense of soul while on the flip we're taken back to the Bay Area late 60s/early 70s as Afro Blue Persuasion's Ulysses Crockett lays down a laid back, slightly fuzzy freeform vibraphone jam in the form of "Funky Resurgence". Sprightly, light-touched and primed for spring, Big Crown have spoilt us big time here.

Review: Those Scandinavian merchants of mischievous beats known as GAMM turn to the Catalonian sun for their latest twelve inch excursion, as Pablo Sanchez adds to his production CV with two cuts. The A Side sees "Yes We Can Can" from Pointer Sisters tuned inside out and embellished with some mid tempo bombastic disco dub sensibilities that further demonstrates the Barcelona based producer's skill at chopping samples. On the flip Sanchez melds some of Thelonius Monk's finest jazz flourishes to a classic jeep beat bump which should satisfy anyone who is down with the likes of Keepup! Records.

Unknown Tape - "Familiar Time & Place" (Detroit mix) (7:09)
Review: The shadowy Edit & Dub crew don't talk about their releases, so it can be difficult to ascertain whether the tracks they're showcasing are long-lost originals, or new edits of ridiculously rare records. Either way, the label's latest EP features versions of some seriously hard to find treats, starting with a fine 'extended disco instrumental' of Sanctuary's 'Disconnect', a fine disco-boogie jam from 1980. They then deliver a (we think) previously unreleased 'extended disco' mix of Willie J & Co's killer 1976 disco-funk gem 'Boogie With Your Baby'. On the B-side we're treated to two takes on the mysterious 'Familiar Time and Place' by Uknown Tapes: a 'Chicago Mix' which sounds like late 80s Windy City acid house smothered in spacey deep house chords and intergalactic electronics and the mid-80s techno-tinged 'Detroit Mix'.

Hey DJ (feat Shiro Schwarz) (5:01)
Tell Me If You Still Care (feat Lee Wilson) (6:06)
Review: Saucy Lady's last collaboration with fellow Japanese native U-Key (real name Yukihiro Kanesaka), 2018's 'It's All Here', remains one of the standout cuts in the Star Creature catalogue. Given the label's incredible track record, that's no mean feat! Hopes are naturally sky-high then for this belated sequel, which sees them switch to Star Creature's sister label Tugboat Editions. Shiro Schwartz joins in the fun on A-side 'Hey DJ', a typically boogie-fired chunk of melodious city pop revivalism that ticks all the right boxes. Lee Wilson makes a guest appearance on the similarly glossy - and arguably more city pop-inspired - flip-side 'Tell Me If You Still Care', an eyes-closed male/female duet of the kind that were all the rage in the 1980s.

Review: Mastered by the legendary Didier from Finnish label Timmion, Detroit's Funk Night bangs out another highly limited dinked 45 for the dirty funk lovers among us. Once again it's another 7 inch from the Fun Shingaling night in Russia. 2 Good 4 Me (2:22)
Almost Man (3:22)
Review: U makes his 7" debut for Where To Now, and offers a great example of why the MPC machine should never be limited to MPC-sounding beats. It's a versatile instrument in the right hands, and there's no question in our minds that the producer in question here has the right hands. Offering three snapshots of a mind evidently packed with far-reaching, varied ideas, the musicality is surprising considering the process and the concepts at play utterly breathtaking.

From '2 Good 4 Me''s manipulated-yet-deep drum patterns, reversing in and out in a playful way while being cast in the dim light of a rainy, moody overhead arrangement, to the stepping, shuffle-inducing 'Almost Man', and its jazz-infused, candlelit vocal sections, this is quite possibly the most sophisticated electronic music you'll hear in some time.

Got To Make Sure (Minister mix) (6:41)
Review: Those who frequented Manchester clubs in the early 90s - particularly those where local hero Hewan Clarke plied his trade - will have danced to 'Got To Make Sure', one of a handful of killer street soul records made by Lancastrian vocalist Hughie Crawford as U-Bert. It is considered by some knowledgeable collectors as one of the greatest street soul records of all time. It's certainly been hard to find - hence this much-needed reissue from Backatcha Records. Happily, all three essential versions of the track are present. The original A-side 'Pablo Mix', a smooth, seductive and effortlessly soulful affair rich in loved-up dreaminess and fluttering synth sounds, comes backed by its original B-side, the jauntier and more dubbed out 'Minister Mix', and the more up-tempo, dancefloor ready 'Remix' (originally remixed under the alternative U-Bert & Co alias). Simply essential.

Review: First released on green vinyl in 2008 and almost impossible to find since, "Synthetic Substitution" is an instrumental cover version of a celebrated Melvin Gill tune by The Undercover Brother, AKA Kenny Dope collaborator Victor Piagneri. The A-side "Instrumental Mix" re-creates the original version's famous groove, layering it with Clavinet lines, fluid pianos and spacey synth solos not evident on Gill's early '70s original. Arguably even better is the "Melody Mix", which adds in some fine George Benson style jazz guitar solos while retaining the familiar breakbeats, bassline and pianos. If you missed out first time around, we'd recommend copping a copy.

Impeach The President (UB instrumental mix) (4:19)
Review: Nubian Crackers member The Undercover Brother (AKA veteran Queens, New York-based beat-maker Victor Piagneri) fires up his U.B.'s project and delivers another taster for the forthcoming "Ultimate Covers w/Breaks" LP. On the A-side you'll find his instrumental interpretation of Frederick Knight cut "Uphill Peace Of Mind", a heavy, stripped-back revision rich in killer drum breaks, Red Hot Chili Peppers style funk-rock guitars and life-affirming piano solos. Turn to the flip for Piagneri's vocal-free version of The Honey Drippers' 1973 anti-Nixon anthem "Impeach The President". He allows the track's much-sampled opening drum break a little more room to breathe, before carefully layering up Hammond organ riffs and a snaking saxophone solo that effectively replaces the original vocals.

Nosy Boraha
Review: Kyoto crew UCND (which comprises of bassist UCON, producer KND and a rotating cast of contributing musicians) lay down a marker for their upcoming Terra Incognita album on Japonica with this EP that features a rather fine DJ Nature remix! The album version of "Morondova" sets the tone nicely, with supple double bass from UCON driving the groove and a taut breakbeat lead rhythm encouraging your hips to slip into action. The title track leads the listener into more abstract hi tech jazz territory which will appeal to fans of Archie Pelago whilst DJ Nature engages head nod mode with his rugged beat down take on "Morondava". A similar loose vibe runs through UCND's final track "Nosy Boraha" which is perhaps the most noodly cut here.

Review: Whether or not this label is named in reference to long-life semi-skimmed milk, we do not know, but the tunes on it are certainly fatter than the 2% you get with UHT. 'Set Your House In Order' is the sort of raw, from-the-heart soul sound that will bring any floor to rapture with its gospel influenced lyrics, big horns and neat organ chords. It's a real dancer, while 'Lego Brick Road' is more of a funk-strutter with moody bass and upright kicks embellished with some warped vocals and playful licks. Two gems.

Review: Remarkably unrestrained, original funk from the UHT label and alias. 'No Love Lost' and 'FM' proffer two draggy jazz-funk heavyweights, both of which plod forth blithely with the insouciance of a blinkered teenager. Said to have been made somewhere in the North of England, these two cuts - resting somewhere between edit and well-polished sound collage - are worthy of their description: "ultra heat treated for maximum punch" (we're drunk).

Review: Uhuru Republic is a collaborative project which brings together a quartet of trio of experienced Italian musicians and producers - including serial fusionist FiloQ - and a wide range of Tanzanian musicians and vocalists. The results, as set out on the Muda EP, are undeniably impressive, fusing traditional Tanzanian singing and instrumentation with 21st century electronics and dancefloor-ready rhythms variously inspired by deep house, tech-house, post-dubstep and high-octane techno. It's actually quite tricky to accurately describe each of the four tracks, but they're all well worth a listen and genuinely deliver something new, fresh and inspiring.
