Mike Gao - "Hubris Produca"
Mike Gao - "Loving Night"
Tokimonsta - "Alive"
Tokimonsta - "Last Night''s Blurry Memories"
Tokimonsta - "Park Walks"
Review: All City round off a superlative year of premier beat delivery with the eighth in their series of LA beatdown ten inches with Tokimonsta and Mike Gao at the helm! Naturally a staple of the LA beat scene - if you don't know Gao for his production work as part of the Galapagos4 label, then it's likely his name will flutter across your radar after his ingenious beat boxing app for the iPad sees the light of day. His contribution to this stellar series is a more than exemplary introduction to a producer with plenty of beat swagger in his arsenal with "Babylon Child" particularly appealing. On the other side Brainfeeder beat gal Tokimonsta impresses just as much with a grainy hue of atmospherics running through "Alive", whilst "Last Night's Blurry Memories" remains true to the title with some decidedly dreamlike melodies engulfed in warm fuzzed out bass frequencies. The neck snapping best is left till last with the straight vocal stutter boom bap drama of "Park Walks" the finest example of Toki's ease on the MPC.

Review: Gatekeeper drops "Let Go", an underground anthem on Bristol's Punch Drunk Label featuring a familiar refrain and a melody that just won't leave your consciousness. "Tense Past", on the flipside, is in more familiar Gatekeeper territory. Dark brooding atmospherics swell over Berlin-esque chords and machine drum percussion. Support comes from Mary Anne Hobbs, Appleblim, Peverelist and RSD.

De Nim E Le Fant
Review: Nottingham-based producer Geiom returns with his third release. The a-side, "Feel So Bad", is a full vocal reggae/dubstep track featuring the microphone talents of Terrible Shock. The track rides on a smooth deep b-line and some lush drifting keyboard parts, driven along by a distinctive cowbell pattern and some massive dub snares. "De Nim è Le Fant", on the flip, is a more electro style instrumental dubstep tune, as 808 kicks and snares get pitched all over the place to create a real bass assault.

And Again
Review: With loads of pleasing nods to the old-school, you can instantly hear the founding fathers of breakbeat in Gella's production. He's not afraid to use classic sampled breaks on "Force Feedback" and there's a classic breakdown that instantly reminds us of Shut Up and Dance or even Orbital. Not that it's a retro-fest by any means, it still kills it big time in 2010. "And Again" is another smart tune that juggles D&B and dubstep rhythms in brilliant harmony, and uses hip-hop vocal shots in the mould of Zinc & Hype in their prime.

Dark Dundry
No 1 Stunners
Review: Bristol heavyweight Gemmy seems to have lately reserved his finest work for the World Of Wonders imprint he dominates, with the Tales Of The Deep EP, the label's third release delivering a walloping statement of intent and precision bass dynamics in the title track alone. Those who've been captivated by the countless free .zips and EPs from the Butterz stable would do well to take note of "Tales Of The Deep" whose 1950s style cinematic warnings over the opening bars don't really prepare you for the sharp, swinging South London bass drama. Alongside this "Freq Factory" adopts a gnarlier mechanical snap, whilst those wanting something a bit rowdy will swarm for the in-your-face business of "Dark Dundry".

Stop Dat (3:46)
Review: More inspired work form one of dubstep's most influential producers appears again on World Of Wonders - a label devoted almost entirely to the work of Gemmy since 2011. Gemmel Phillips is a producer and DJ from Bristol, UK who has released previously on tastemaker labels such as Punch Drunk, Pinch's Tectonic, Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu, Soul Jazz and Earwax before forming his own imprint in 2011. This new three-track EP here follows on from his Bamboozled EP for the label last year, and shows off Gemmy's keen talent for crafting 'purple wave' influenced bass music. From the wonky grime attitude of "Nah Tek Bk Chat" on the A side, to the booming speaker rattling B side cut "Stop Dat" - this whole release is a killer!

Gemmy - "Roll On Tips & Toes"
Oatz - "Untitled"
Boofy - "Since When"
Breen - "Hooded Up"
Review: Following two rounds of heavy hitting platters from label bosses Kahn and Neek, the third Bandulu plate sees them step out of the spotlight and invite a new set of artists into the fold. 003 in the canon is an essential purchase for the presence of Gemmy's mythical swaggering West Country basement anthem "Roll On Tips And Toes" in fully remastered form and the Bristol grime veteran is complemented by three equally crucial cuts from the city's new school. Oaty lines up alongside Gemmy with "Untitled" a vicious 8-bar anthem in the making, whilst face down Boofy and Breen duke it out for prominence with the latter's "Hooded Up" a particularly rugged concoction of recycled strings and gut punching drums. Screen printed, signed and numbered by Joshua Hughes-Games. Limited to 500.

Track 2
Review: Erstwhile D&B'ers Genetix have nailed the dubstep sound recently. Applying their strong-arm sonic knowhow from their previous trade, it's given their cuts a distinctive edge. "Track One" is the bolshier one of the pair with its swaggering half steps, well-placed MC vocal snippet and bear-like bass. "Track Two" is a much deeper, rolling percussive cut spiked with chilling pads and paranoid tick-tock shakers shuffling deep in the darkest corners. Both are bolstered with the bulletproof beef their D&B was known for too.

Review: Little is known about Gent1e Soul besides the fact they have been on Fast Castle before (with the exemplary 'Silk Armour' EP), they make remarkably addictive, super-gloopy, trippy, funky beat based music and that they're probably quite nice and considerate, considering their alias and all. Generous, too. Each of these five cuts tickles a different corner of the breakbeat/dubstep/club hinterland as they guide us from the old school Benga-like pushes and swagger of 'Siege Ram' to the WNCL-flavoured percussive hypnosis of 'Woads' via the pounding technoid rolls of 'Fortified Walls' and beyond.

Review: St Petersburg dubsteppers Giant make a welcome return to H.E.N.C.H. with two speaker shattering mid range tear outs. The sub bass crunch and squeaking synth stabs on "Herbert" achieve a fine balance of thump and dancefloor friendliness with the cartoon samples a nice touch. On the flip "Collins Booster" squeezes rave keys and vocals through a grinding dubstep rhythm which builds towards a mammoth drop.

Review: This is some half-speed dubstep joy that has a pleasing wonky vibe, as well as some crazy futuristic melodies that make this the perfect choice to soundtrack the next Moon landing. The fun demented vibe carries over onto "Oreo", which sounds like ghosts are trapped within the beats, and are desperate to get out. As crazy as it all sounds, it's so fresh it's hard not to listen again and again.

IRL (DVA's HI Emotions remix)
Shade On
Review: Despite having a moniker which sounds like an all-female pop outfit from the 90s, you'll be glad to hear that Girl Unit, is, in fact, nothing of the sort. A house aficionado of the highest calibre, the South London based producer blends elements of UK funky, 2-step, house, garage, Chicago juke and shades of dubstep with an iconoclastic irreverence for genre boundaries. Appearing on Bok-Bok and L-Vis 1990's label, Night Slugs, the I.R.L EP marks the third release for the burgeoning young imprint, which was established earlier this year. The EP - incidentally one of the most hotly tipped records around at the moment - begins with the title track. A dramatic, cinematic intro (rather reminiscent of D&B producer Rockwell's "Noir") initiates the proceedings with a thumping statement of intent and screechy, sliding synth embellishments. A hollow, clip-clop beat underpins the track, moving from dark, moody moments to more mellow, Mount Kimbie-style sections with masterful ease. DVA takes things down a tougher, rougher street with the tapping, grinding synthetics and raw industrial edge of his 'Hi Emotions' remix, whereas Young Gunz crew member, French Fries tunes in to a funky vibe, with shuffling rhythms, a nod to soca and lashings of sun-drenched tropical exoticism.

We Can Make The World Stop
Palace Og The Innocents
Review: It's been an immense year for TGM as they unleashed their long-awaited second album Love Death Immortality and toured the world with it. Here we find them taking a step back to 2011 with this between-album EP that's never been pressed to vinyl before now and shows how the trio morphed sonically and creatively from the deeper, more home-listening Drink The Sea to the Prodigy-level dancefloor slammers they have become. "We Can Make The World Stop" is a dirge-like kerb-crawling sleaze-bass stomper that's charged with thick triumphancy. "The Palace Of The Innocents" is more like their earlier material with its industrial strength hip-hop breaks, distorted arpeggiated riff and dreamy flutes. Both kill it.

In Tha Trap (5:38)
Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

Ovale
Review: With world-conquering tracks from Deadboy, Jamie xx and Mosca already under their belts this year, the latest release from the Numbers stable sees Belgian duo GoldFFinch take centre stage with a double header of acid-tinged bass tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor. "Red Mask" sounds like the kind of raw analogue jam Boddika is becoming legendary for, with 303 flecks intertwined around its ghettotech influenced staccato vocal samples and bone dry percussion. B-Side "Ovale" is less furiously paced, but similarly bass heavy, utilising simple 808 beats over its huge low end, accented by some pitched down cut up vocals and oddball melodies which are particularly reminiscent of Claude VonStroke's tongue-in-cheek approach to house music. Another huge release from one the year's most consistent labels.

Review: Weighing in with some monolithic dubstep styles on Mala's ever excellent Deep Medi Musik imprint, Japanese producer par excellence Goth Trad proves that there can be some give in big room ravey dubstep, and though the track may primarily lurch around aggravated mid-range synth grind, the moments of calm creep in with control that comes from a diverse and adaptable producer. On the flip "Cosmos" takes the deeper approach, using inter-locking percussion and devastating sub bass for a classic exercise in proper dubstep. Whichever kind of set you're plumping for, this release is definitely for the purists.

your ear, cue the harsh bass stabs and the hard head-rocking until a swoop into an almighty 4/4 bass-driven monster. The DJ
Distance mix strips down the elements of the original and gives it an absolute distance-weighted bass portion that has been rattling

Review: Bringing his melodically wholesome vibes to Vase, ace Canadian producer Jacques Greene has crafted an all-out future pop cut in the shape of "Flatline". Ango provides some wholly smooth crooning over the track, making this a jam primed for chart consumption. Elsewhere a diverse selection of grooves abound, from the stripped UK funky stylings of "These Days" to the more streamlined and mildly trancey "Clark". Fittingly, this is some high-powered bass gear, and "Intimate" couldn't be more of a hybrid track, where fluttering swarms of stop-start drums collide with choppy vocal samples and sporadic hits of low frequencies. Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

Review: Yuku come correct with this special blue vinyl remix 12". Two vibes per side, both Traka and Granul go under the knife. On one side we have Serbian crew Traka under scrutiny as Commodo flips 'Yosai' into a menacing slab of tension while Muqata takes the Killa P-fronted 'Start Taking Note' into a brutalist sonic rainbow. Flip for two remixes of Turkish maverick Granul; Jtamul turns two-step inside out with stacks of eerie space on 'Deformity' while Iskeletor turns 'Interconnected' into the twisted, halftime heaver of your dreams. Stark sermons!

Review: Having spent the last decade offering up occasional albums on a variety of imprints, grime veteran Ghetts now finds himself signed to a major label. Warner Brothers has high hopes for Conflict of Interest and listening back it's easy to hear why. Ghetts is at his lyrical best throughout, spitting rhymes that are far more mature, thoughtful and arguably impactful than he would have been capable of earlier in his career. Musically, the grime rhythms are punchy and weighty, and the synth-heavy backing relatively sparse and ghostly. Throw in guest appearances from some seriously heavy hitters - Stormzy, Emeli Sande, Ed Sheeran, Dave, Giggs and Skepta included - and you have a seriously good set that could well propel Ghetts further towards international superstardom.

Review: Ghetts is undoubtedly amongst the top tier of British MCs - a grime legend famed for being a genuinely dextrous lyricist. As On Purpose, With Purpose proves, he's also an artist whose output has evolved considerably since he emerged in the late 2000s. While his raps and rhymes are as sharp as ever, the beats he's working with are far more diverse, polished and - whisper it quietly - deeper than many may expect. For proof, check the r&b and hip-hop-soul influenced of 'Double Standards (featuring Sampha)', the sub-heavy punchiness of 'Laps (featuring Moonchild Sanelly), and the jazzy, head-nodding hip-hop warmth of 'Twin Sisters (featuring Skrapz)'. Throw in nods to Afrobeats and Amapiano, and you've got a set that will surely feature in many 'best of 2024' lists later in the year.

Review: Ghetts presents a new album, On Purpose, With Purpose, which follows 2021's epic Conflict Of Interest and continues the ongoing artistic evolution of one of the UK's foremost rappers. Ghetts returns sounding sharper, more unflinchingly honest and boldly confident than ever before, expanding his sonic palette by reaching out beyond rap and incorporating wider genre elements such as soul ('Double Standards'), r&b ('Mine'), gospel ('Hallelujah'), Afrobeat and amapiano ('Gbedu', 'Blessings', 'Tumbi'). With every contemporary stylistic box ticked, Ghetts' purpose is made abundantly clear: to please.

Review: Ghett's Conflict Of Interest album late last year was one of grime's finest. It now makes its arrival on wax and still hits hard. There are plenty of hugely evocative and biographical stories in this record that make it all the more real and impactful, from tales of street life to memories of his childhood to worries about being a parent. Those many different sides to Ghett's personality are reflected by the artwork which shows him at different ages all at once. The dark production makes for long and shadowy moods but guest spots from the likes of Emile Sande and Ed Sheehan bring a lighter soul sound that will have you singing along.

Review: Oskar Allen and Luke Barnett are Glume & Phossa, but beyond that we dot know much about them, Musically this superb album shows that they bridge the gap between electronica, trap and hip-hop with plenty of slick and sleek minimal rhythms and glistening synths. There's a psychedelic edge to these sounds - hyper real melodies and warped vocal sounds - that makes it otherworldly and futuristic at the same tie as having the sort of nostalgic chords that remind you of a time you probably never actually lived. Brilliant stuff for either home listening or the dance floor.

Review: The buzz has been building for fledgling Chelmsford producer Gold Panda for a while now, and after lauded remixes for the likes of Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco, HEALTH, and Lemonade (to name a few), as well as the release of some quality singles, Gold Panda has dropped his debut album Lucky Shiner on the cusp of autumn. For those of you unfamiliar with Gold Panda's sound, an immediate reference point could be imagining the gifted lovechild of Four Tet and The Field. But this is not to imply that Gold Panda sounds too much like either of these artists, just that his music evokes them. Therefore, beatier tracks like "Vanilla Minus", "Snow & Taxis", and "Marriage" will no doubt remind listeners of The Field's knack for hypnotic loop-based techno. Yet what makes it different is Gold Panda's talent for adding a distinct emotional element to his songs, one that is quite strong but doesn't fully reveal itself until repeated listens. There really is something infectious with Lucky Shiner, which simply comes down to the fact that it invokes an introspective yet warm mood in the end one that seems to correspond snugly with the beginning of the autumn season. Lucky Shiner is a solid and diverse debut, and worth every bit of anticipation and hype bestowed upon it. Check it.

Review: Japanese producer Goth Trad is an interesting character. Some years ago, he single-handedly tried to introduce a form of music called "mad rave" - an intense and really quite insane fusion of D&B, hardcore, break core and dubstep. There are occasional echoes of that period on New Epoch - his first full-length for bass music hipsters Deep Medi - but for the most part it's a fairly careful and considered set. Mostly built around variants of dubstep rhythms, it fuses chiming melodies and clanking industrial sounds with hand-picked samples, skittering percussion and subdued, sub-shaking grooves. In parts, it has more in common with IDM than hardcore, but that's no bad thing. It's certainly his most grown-up album to date.

Review: Finally! Grove's exceptional debut EP from last year sees the vinyl light of day. Sitting somewhere between breaks, drum & bass, hip-hop and IDM, their powerful delivery and black, queer perspective fires up an incredible cauldron that's visceral, physical and loaded with positivity. Highlights range from the subverted jungle head-twister 'F-I-U' to the bulldozer techno stepper 'Intent' with all kinds of flavours in between including a collab with Griz-O, a remix from Ur Worst Nightmare and exceptional life truths like 'Fuck Ur Landlord' and 'Ur Boyfriend's Whack'. Get sticky.

Review: Juicy jams galore: ZHA's White Peach return with their sixth "Bits" instalment where Peach pals old and new collide with their freshest, most vitamin-enriched cuts. First up label newcomers Neffa-T and Patrick Brian get rowdy with a space-aged grime stepper "Sabertooth". All staccato fire and rubber-ball bass it sets the tone for Gundam & Jook's grimey snare-smacking hybrid "Tactical Espionage" and some obese bass ripples from Modelle, who was last spotted on the label earlier this year with the awesome "Paladins" EP. Finally ZHA makes a rare appearance with the wonked out melter "Running VIP". Yum.
