Review: Released 35 years ago, The Cactus Album marked a significant moment in hip-hop, presenting a unique blend of styles from its members, Pete Nice and MC Serch. Unlike their contemporaries, the duo expressed their identity authentically, sidestepping exaggerated stereotypes often associated with white rappers. Their chemistry is palpable in tracks like 'Steppin' To The A.M' and 'Words Of Wisdom', where intricate samples and sharp lyricism shine through. The album's standout, 'The Gas Face', shows their ability to tackle complex social issues, addressing racism in a way rarely seen among white emcees at the time. Tracks such as 'Brooklyn Queens' and 'Monte Hall' illustrate their knack for catchy yet thoughtful content, while DJ Richie Rich's contributions on the turntables enhance the album's overall sound. Despite the group's eventual split due to personal differences, their influence remains significant. The lasting legacy of The Cactus Album lies in its authentic representation of hip-hop culture, paving the way for future artists like Eminem. Even amid interpersonal strife, the duo's collaboration produced a timeless work that resonates even today.

Review: If you like your techno slung at you in emotive waves, look no further than Alarico's latest LP. Releasers Primal Instinct speak as if to restore to techno its very essence by describing an asymptote of techno, one that must be held fast to or lost: "complex and groovy patterns generated by advanced, yet organic sound design, unifying the two antipodes that create the essence of techno: primitivism and innovation." Alarico's record is an exemplary egg of this principle, hatched from within the PI hutch: over the span of two years, many of these tunes come culled from the Milanese producer's live performances, and prefer reams of wavy emotion amid hard pummellings. Unlike many of his peers, Alarico is unafraid of varying the tonal centre, interceding stark and heavy drum design with moving progressions, yet not indulging overt tranciness, as on the drowned world of 'Mezcal & Sangre' or the opening vibe-promulgator 'Iruka'.

Review: Blue Foundation returns with another lush and immersive album that deepens their signature blend of dream pop, shoegaze and ambient electronics. Crafted over three years by the much loved Danish duo Bo Rande and Tobias Wilner, Close to the Knife explores themes of melancholy and introspection through layered textures and haunting vocals from Wilner and Nina Larsen. Guest appearances from Scarlet Rae, Helena Gao, and Sonya Kitchell enrich its emotional depth, while contributions from Chinese experimental noise band Wang's Xie Yugang and drummer Federico Ughi add complexity to this shapeshifting soundtrack.

Hamsa & Luca Piermattei - "Mystic Perc" (6:05)
Roberto Manolio - "Blue Yes" (6:40)
Review: Musek return for another V/A release, flaunting their artists' variegated hitmaking capacities. Fronting the release is a wonderful rework of Stockholm trio Art Fact's 'Rain In The South' from 1989, to which Francesco Farfa and Hamsa bring extra electronic-bodyweight to an originally dripping synth tune. A mystical mood is continually proferred across 'Mystic Perc' through to 'Blue Yes' by Roberto Manolio, traversing chime tinglings, acid breaks and dreamy vocals: "pretty blue eyes... you're mesmerised... don't look to hard... you may never come back from that..."

Review: A stunning journey across musical landscapes, courtesy of Ayers' diverse artistic vision, the album opens with the expansive and orchestral 'There is Loving/Among Us/There is Loving,' a progressive epic that sets a grand tone, followed by the dreamy and affectionate 'Margaret,' a psychedelic ode to Ayers' girlfriend at the time. 'Oh My' sees proceedings taking a playful turn, infusing New Orleans jazz influences into a catchy singalong track that exudes charm. 'Song From The Bottom Of A Well' ventures into psychedelic territory with its haunting atmosphere and experimental soundscapes as Ayers pushes the boundaries. Whatevershebringswesing, the title track, unfolds beautifully over its eight-minute duration, featuring the soulful vocals of his Soft Machine comrade Robert Wyatt and stellar guitar work by Mike Oldfield. It's a highlight praised for its laid-back vibe and intricate musicality. 'Stranger In Blue Suede Shoes' injects a dose of old-fashioned rock 'n' roll energy with infectious piano riffs and memorable lyrics. 'Champagne Cowboy Blues' offers a nod to country-western music, enriched by Mike Oldfield's evocative guitar solos and subtle fiddle embellishments. The album closes with 'Lullaby,' a serene and enchanting piece enhanced by Didier Malherbe's flute and soothing piano, creating a perfect conclusion to Ayers' musical narrative.

Review: Spain's Tensegrity Records makes its debut with a release that locks together rhythm and atmosphere like well-fitted joints in a wooden lattice. Founded by Babu, the label takes its name from the concept of tensegrityistructures held in equilibrium through tension and compression. That same principle underpins these five tracks, where restraint and release shape the groove. 'Tensegrity' sets the foundation, interlocking elements with a patient, tensile flow. 'Erase una vez' nods to electro and new wave, its synth lines tinged with nostalgia, while 'Meritocracia' stretches out into lush, contemplative territory. On the flip, 'Romi' leans into shadowy, percussive minimalism, its tribal pulse threading through negative space. 'Structural Stress' closes with a rawer energy, drawn from personal upheaval yet channelled into something direct and resolute. With only 200 copies pressed, this first transmission from Tensegrity Records feels not just meticulously crafted, but necessary.

Review: Deeper shades of a finely sifted pedigree. Irish label Appian Sounds, helmed up by Al Blayney, champion only winnowed techno sounds, not threshed. A welcome international team huddle in, with these six artists from locales as far-flung as Amsterdam and Valencia contributing the likes of 'Tsuneo' and 'Persist'. The tunes verge melodic as they move through and beyond jankiness, distending die-cut acids and subtly synthetic humanisations, especially in the percussion department. 'Fuego' is the zen roshi's choice, its gaffered, glass-smithed pads topping off a naturalistic percussive surging forward, one best experienced with your eyes closed.

Review: Tropical is Brazilian samba legend Jorge Ben Jor's fifteenth album and it blends unreleased tracks with reimagined covers like 'Taj Mahal' and 'Pais Tropical.' This superb mix of tunes embraces more pop and Western influences than before and hints at his later shift toward the World-Dance sound of the 1980s. Originally aimed at international markets, the album wasn't released in Brazil until 1977 but ably showcased Ben Jor's immense talent as he skilfully revitalises familiar tunes with fresh arrangements that capture the spirit of the times. This era-defining record from Brazil is yet another must-have.

Review: From the fast-rising Midlands duo that sit somewhere in-between The Sleaford Mods, Idles or even the soulful tones of Rag 'n' Bone man, this is a debut album that provides coherent, emotional and sometimes intimate moments that will give the listener goosebumps and the temptation play on repeat until the sun goes down.
Heartfelt subject matter provided by Joe Hicklin with beats and samples provided by Callum Maloney are the basic ingredients that make this 15-track album many peoples favourite release of 2024 and one that complements their live shows that many have been fortunate to witness in the buildup to this release.
Switching between spoken word, angry outbursts of shouting and soulful vocals, backed by some smooth bass lines and big pounding beats the journey the listener travels through during this album is an emotional one that's at times light-hearted yet its thought-provoking approach makes it an enjoyable listen. Serious subject matter is covered here such as mental health and being stuck in a job you may hate and cannot escape from. Butchers Bin is about class awareness, lives being trivialised like pieces of meat in a shop window. Shithouse boasts one of the best opening couple of lines any song could ask for and is brutal in its delivery. Dig is an anthem to end the album that is joyous, contains various degrees of tension and by the time this is over one realises that it sits perfectly with every other album you may have purchased over the past decade.

Review: Billy Idol, one of the most iconic figures in British rock history, has returned with his first full-length album in over a decade. Known for his punk roots as a member of Generation X and subsequent MTV-era persona, Idol has constantly evolved, blending his early rebellious spirit with a more reflective, mature approach to life and music. This latest release captures that transformation, offering a blend of punk rock energy and introspective storytelling. Idol's partnership with longtime guitarist Steve Stevens continues to define his sound, while collaborations with rock legends Joan Jett, Avril Lavigne and Alison Mosshart further solidify his place at the forefront of rock's new generation. Having emerged from the early days of British punk, Idol's legacy spans decades, and this new record marks both a personal reflection and a return to form.

Review: Towa Bird's latest album, American Hero, blends aggressive guitar riffs and smooth, low vocals that transcend genres from rock to pop. Towa describes the album as an honest exploration of love, yearning, and vulnerability, aiming to create music she longed for in her youth. In 'Sorry Sorry', Towa navigates the insecurities of falling for a close friend, with lyrics reflecting the fear of altering their relationship. 'FML' delves into the depths of attachment and anxiety, with powerful lyrics as she grasps on to her emotions in this challenging time. The closing track, meanwhile, 'A Party', is a slow acoustic song speaking about the nuances of love themes. American Hero balances the fluidity of pop and the edge of rock expertly.

Review: The Birthday Massacre, hailing from Canada, command a bracing gothic blend of 80s electronica and aggressive guitar work. Formed in 2000 as Imagica, the band is led by vocalist Chibi and guitarists Rainbow and Michael Falcore. They debuted in London, Ontario, before moving to Toronto and rebranding, with the 2002 self-released Nothing and Nowhere inducting us into their horror-comedic sonic aesthetic, drawing on macabre cabaret and Grande-Guignol rock. Though little light but fan speculation has been shed on their new album Pathways, this purple detour has sparked rumours of a fresh direction and stylistic tangent for the band, coming helmed up by the pre-released streamer single 'Sleep Tonight', lighting up oneiric stadia worldwide with their mega-metal shreds and huge electronica arrangements.

Review: This essential metal album captures Black Sabbath at their most raw back in their formative years. It features their now-legendary April 1970 session for DJ John Peel and some visceral performances from Germany's Beat-Club in May of the same year. With early live renditions of era-defining tracks like 'War Pigs,' 'Iron Man' and 'Paranoid,' these tunes offer a gritty and unique glimpse into the band's rise as pioneers of heavy metal. With Tony Iommi's sludgy riffs, Ozzy Osbourne's haunting vocals and a rhythm section that redefined heaviness, it's easy to see how Black Sabbath's genre-defining legacy got its start.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

The evolution of Justin Vernon from the broken-hearted, falsetto-voiced troubadour who emerged from his cabin to deliver his debut eight years ago to the here and now may seem downright implausible, yet the facts of the matter are this - '22, A Million' is proof positive that he is one of the most multi-faceted and enigmatic and inscrutable artists we have at our disposal, still capable of delivering heart-rending beauty in song form yet also of marrying it to wilful abstraction in a way that not only offers emotional resonance yet reflects and refracts its surrounding era to offer succour and salvation. Sing it from the rooftops, this is little short of a complicated modern masterpiece.

Review: In the late summer of 2019, DJ Rocca and Chris Coco spent time together at the intimate La Casella festival in Umbria, Italy, where they chatted about Italo disco, the Rimini/Riccione riviera in the 90s and classic Italian clubs. Inspired by their conversations and imagined memories of scenes they weren't part of, they set out to make the music which over time, evolved into CocoRocca DiscoTeca, an imaginary retro-futuristic club blending past influences with future possibilities. It draws on dub, house and disco and is now resented on this wonderfully escapist full length which starts slow and dreamy, raises the pulse then slows down to a nice emotive finish. A fine reimagine of some classic sounds.

Review: Some 20 years on from the acclaimed Nicola Conte presents Rosalia De Souza album Garota Moderna, it now gets a full reissue across double vinyl on Schema out of Italy. It is a high class debut record that has more than stood the test of time and has always been of great interest to fans of artists like Patricia Marx and Bebel Gilberto. The singer's sunny vocals soar over the lush Brazilian rhythms with samba, bossa, broken beat and new jazz all thrown down and blended together. Instrumentals are rich and authentic and take you to a beach, sipping a cocktail under a beaming sun.
