Vortexual (Element One)
Review: On Vortextual (Element One), Echospace's Stephen Hitchell once again dons the Variant mask for a trip into the "realm of sonic mysticism". It was composed and produced for Detroit's Movement Festival, where Hitchell delivered a typically spacious, dubbed-out live performance. This recorded version is in the form of an hour-long exploration of dubbed-out ambient textures, where cyclical chords and melodies - drenched in delay and produced in a typically minimalist way - slowly rise and fall. They're occasionally joined by bouts of pulsating rhythm, with subtly ricocheting hits riding a watery, outer-space bassline. For the most part, though, it's a beatless and hypnotic excursion.

Vortexual (Element Two)
Review: According to Echospace's Stephen Hitchell, the second part of the Vortextual series, under his Variant ambient alias, was designed as a "soundtrack for traveling alone in the outer depths of space". In other words, it's another continuous, hour-long journey, where soft focus dub techno rhythms and echo-laden textures rub shoulders with misty-eyed chords and slowly evolving melodies. While effectively a variation on a theme, it packs a little more percussive punch than its' predecessor, whilst still drifting from the speakers in an impressively weightless manner. As usual, it's a limited CD pressing, so grab it while you can to avoid disappointment.

Auroras Dream (Solar mix)
Auroras Dream (Polar mix)
Review: Stephen Hitchell's Variant alias has long been a reliable source of overwhelmingly dense and dubbed-out experimentation, with a catalogue of drone-influenced, largely beatless albums stretching back to 2008. Even so, there's still something wildly ambitious about Auroras Dream, an album of fuzzy, dub techno-influenced ambience smothered in distorted white noise, drawn-out melodies and distracted, stargazing chords. Although a two-disc outing, it contains just two tracks - near hour-long variations on a theme that in turn offer drowsy, sun-flecked warmth (the Solar Mix on disc one) and icy, windswept bleakness (the Polar Mix). In some ways the brief clips don't do either track justice, as they both slowly unfurl over two hours of spellbinding sound design.

Auratia (part two)
Review: Even by the usually epic standards of Echospace - who are, after all, no strangers to long, drawn-out tracks - Auratia is particularly grandiose in concept and introduction. Inspired by one of the worst blizzards in Michigan's history, and containing sounds and textures that started out as field recordings, this latest missive from Stephen Hitchell's solo Variant project is made up of two tracks, each around an hour long. While hard to get a handle on from short clips, it's as beautiful, intoxicating and immersive as anything he's produced to date. Sat somewhere between drone, ambient and dub techno, Auratia is at times becalmed, intense, picturesque and, predictably, rather chilly.

The Setting Sun (live version)
Review: Second time around for Echospace man Stephen Hitchell's debut full-length under the now familiar Variant alias, which originally surfaced back in 2008. On its' original release, The Setting Sun saw Hitchell abandon the dub techno rhythms he's most famous for, turning instead to the world of texture-led, dubbed-out ambience. In some ways, it's Echospace without the grooves, though given the sense of atmosphere that envelops those productions, that's no bad thing. It was apparently created using field recordings and vintage analogue gear, and recorded straight to reel-to-reel tape. This approach is best exemplified by the 23-minute title track, which remains one of Hitchell's most spellbinding compositions.

Review: Echospace man Stephen Hitchell has been devoting much time to his Variant project over the last couple of years, releasing no less than nine, straight-to-tape explorations in 2015 alone. Here, he continues his seemingly endless voyage into the deep space where ambient, sound design and dub techno meet. Sequential Sleep is a double-disc affair, with each CD boasting one long take on the fluid, spacey, becalmed and hazy title track. The differences between the two are subtle, but certainly noticeable: the slightly longer Granular Mix (hosted on disc one) feels more fluid and spaced-out, while the Modular Mix (presumably titled in honour of Hitchell's chosen production method) is bolder and louder, with more distinctively layered electronic textures.
