Review: REPRESS ALERT!: The late Susumu Yokota's deep, linear, heady take on techno as Anima Mundi gets a reissue with remixes to boot. The title track of this eighth outing from Cosmic Soup is 'Hebula' and is the sort of grinding, unrelenting pumper that is subtle but high impact, especially mentally. It is also the perfect track for the remixers to tackle: first is Dax J who ups the ante with rugged percussive patterns then Japanese maestro Wata Igarashi adds two versions. One is an organic and heady affair with sustained pads and jumbled toms, the other is a psychedelic and colourful head melter

Review: Brooklyn is not often somewhere you think of when it comes to minimal, a sound more usually associated with European artists these days, unless of course, you're talking about early US originators like Dan Bell and Robert Hood. This release suggests that view is wrong with a trio of classy cuts. Mike Berardi's 'Helicopter Ride' is lively and jazzy and rides a nice broken beat. Samuel Padden's 'String Theory' is more icy and paired back to a minimal cosmic trip and Jay Tripwire's 'Floorboards' a wonky late-night charmer.

Review: Tabou 1 is on a roll right now and their latest offering features reggae icon Johnny Clarke teaming up with the legendary rhythm duo Sly & Robbie. 'Every Knee' is an archetypal roots reggae anthem that has everything you want in a tune. It demands to be played loud and proud and blends Clarke's soulful, spiritual vocals with Sly & Robbie's masterful bass and drum foundation. Review: There is plenty of experimental work at play int his new various artists' collection on Flash. Cloned Existence sets that tone with the brief synth exploration that is 'Wave 1' when Gael & Jolly take off with the much more punchy and thudding techno of 'Paradigm Shock' which is weird up with all sorts of synth designs, effects and layers of reverb. Under Black Helmet ups the ante further with one of those bulky techno grooves that locks you in the moment and Stigmata then brings big room 90s vibes with layers of tangled synth melting the mind. Florian Meindl brings things to a close with gritty, scraping bass, reverb-heavy kicks and pure warehouse techno heaviness.

Review: It's an oldie but a goodie; Patrick Cowley and Sylvester's 1982 electronic disco classic 'Do You Wanna Funk' receives another worthy vinyl repress featuring two timeless remixes. Review: Senking and DYL reunite after their notable collaboration back on 2020's EP Uniformity Of Nature, this time going long on their first full-length, Diving Saucer Attack. This new work spans a total of six tracks, two of which have been produced individually and so highlight their shared passion for dub-heavy and adventurous electronic music while also bringing out the subtle differences in their styles. Review: EC Underground is back with more inquisitors of low-end heavy sounds on Bass Scene Investigation vol 1 and again digs deep into the worlds of electro, techno, breakbeat and IDM. The compilation kicks off with the skittish percussive patterns of Illektrolab's 'Making Heads Dip', then heads into moody ground with ADJ, Pablo Funk brings some menacing synth work and Errorbeauty gets all weird and trippy with some mad electronics. Francois Dillinger offers a dystopian electro sound full of irresistibly jacked-up drums. A fine investigation indeed.

Review: So what happens when a European post-punk outfit meets an American 'ambient country ensemble'? The answer: A Nanocluster. In fact, three. This being the third. Immersion first met SUSS in September 2021, and the results were mesmerising. Three years on and the impact was no less staggering. Originally landing in September 2024, part tres takes us into the kind of musical places we're used to finding Spiritualized or Mogwai, and even then the references are misleading. For as many times as Nanocluster Vol. 3 sucks us into a thick soup of ambient and atmosphere, inviting us to get lost in opiate cloud formations, it also asks us to jump on board a stream train of rolling and driving rhythms, juggernauts gathering depth and complexity as they forge ahead. A stunning collection of highly evocative and incredible musical instrumentals.

Review: Roffa than ruff! Netherlands craftsman Mike Redman (AKA Deformer) unites local MCs Bigman Scep, Swift and Dart for this big singalong skank-out. Tailored for festivals, it pays homage to the roots with big party energy. Meanwhile on the remix front we're bombarded with an all-star cast as UK OGs Bizzy B and Ed Rush both get stuck in alongside Mike under his Deformer alias. Bizzy is all about the modern rave twist while Ed Rush gets an old Bad Company style and Deformer goes all-out breakcore. Elsewhere on this double 12" opus we see Mackadena get the breaks on, Rotterdam Terror Corps go full hardcore and Akira teasing us with a little twist of gabber. High grade Dutch business.

Review: Wah Wah 45s return to the world of reissues by offering up a fresh (and expanded) pressing of an overlooked acoustic soul gem from the early 1990s. SAM was a short-lived collaboration between singer-songwriter Sam Edwards and producer Alex Boyesen, who met while the was working for the Haringey Music Workshop community project, with the pair self-releasing a two-track single. You get both of those cuts here: the simply sublime, life-affirming acoustic soul-jazz brilliance of 'American Cars' and the even more jazzy 'Life', both of which feature staggeringly good lead vocals from Edwards. The EP also includes two fresh remixes: an extended, subtly beefed-up jazz-dance revision of 'American Cars' from Ashley Beedle's Afrikanz on Marz project, and a warming, colourful, synth-sporting take on 'Life' by Adam Scrimshire.

Review: Finder Keepers recently sent soundtrack lovers into orgasm when they reissue the rarest of them all, the Belladonna Of Sadness soundtrack, and now they score big once more. This one is another dive into the vaults of composer Masahiko Sato and upon returning to the surface we're presented with a bunch of the 13 lost cuts that never made it onto to Italian-only sound track album first time round. It makes for two tracks freaky fuzz, dense noise, post-punk rhythms and intense sonics that sound like nothing else.

Review: There are plenty of electro overtones to the brain of techno that Savtsenko kicks out here for his latest on Kinetic. 'Auto Pilot; is a raw, textural banger with corrugated basslines surging to the stars. 'Come Again' has hammering kicks and more slinky baselines this time with raw punk energy and 'Seductionizer' also brings great texture and a rather hellish vocal edge to slamming electro-techno low ends. Review: Scott Grooves is one of the quietly brilliant home artists. The US talent has done it all in his time and brings plenty of musicality to his work, which is mostly couched in-house but for this one-sided and limited edition 7" heads off into techno territory. 'Track 1' is a blistering cut with coarse hits and smeared pads all turbo-powered by some driving drums that are deep but direct. There is a great sense of machine soul to the synths that helps take it even further into the next dimension. Another vital release from this mainstay.

Review: 'Solitude' is a perfectly apt title for anything Sistrum label head Patrice Scott does. The US deep house master makes such introverted and introspective sounds that they have you utterly transfixed in the moment, locked into thought and gazing on at his gorgeous synth designs which are cosmic, meaningful and jazzy. The title track here does all that and more with some deft vocals laced in and gentle tambourine sounds. 'Inoffensive Dance' is another meditation of deepness with loose drums and lovely melodies all soothing mind, body and soul.

Review: Searows is the moniker of Alec Duckart, a Portland-based indie folk star who is signed to Matt Maltese's label Last Recordings On Earth. Searows is influenced by the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and Iron & Wine and his falsetto has a similar power and timbre to that of his formative influences. Opening track 'Martingale' is beautifully stripped down and pulls you as a listener close to his soul. Meanwhile, on 'To Be Seen' Searows comes across like he's lamenting the death of something and it is a proper tear-jerker. Contrastingly, 'Toothache' is brighter with percussion and delay-laden electric guitar showing his talent for rich, lush arrangements. Matt Maltese has struck gold here by signing Searows. Plus, they're well-suited as they each appear to enjoy delving into post-apocalyptic work. Searows' previous release (on the Last Recordings On Earth label) is called End Of The World and before starting this label, Maltese released his hit single as a solo artist: 'As The World Caves In'. They suit it all so well.

Review: Seekers dropped the still superb album What He Does last year that laid out their cosmic house dub and techno visions in technicolour detail. That good work is continued here on their own self title label with the Ancient Lands EP which comes with marvellous artwork which, like the music, manages to be both ancient and ritualistic yet futuristic and exciting. Synth modulations ripple throughout the smooth techno surges of opener 'Metamorphic Frequencies' then 'Evanescens Punctum' is more zoned out and dubby. 'Ancient Lands' and 'Touch' are two more psychedelic dancefloor escapes of the highest order.

Review: Shannon's debut single from her debut album, 'Let The Music Play', defined an era. It was a huge crossover hit and one of four number ones from the American singer and was the start of the huge dance-pop sound that dominated for many years after. The gated 808 drums are one of the most popular sounds of the time (also heard on the likes of Phil Collin's 'In The Air Tonight') and here they are paired with some spaced out reverb, crisp snares and big keyboard stabs. It's prickly and futurist even mow, and that vocal is always going to get any club going wild. Two versions are served up here next to the original on a slick purple vinyl.

Review: In 1969, Manny Campbell discovered a talented group in a showcase and promptly arranged a recording session. Their debut demos, 'Love is the Way' and 'Something Wonderful,' were recorded at Upper Darby Studios. Seeking a richer sound, they transitioned to Sigma Sound Studios around 1970 to produce 'Trouble Trouble.' Named by Campbell as Sharisma, the group embodied soulful charm. Unfortunately, their Vietnam-bound lead singer delayed the release so Campbell, inspired by his own son's troubles, penned 'Trouble Trouble.' Although shelved due to missing members, the tracks remained and now get pressed up to wax for your pleasure.

Review: Japan's Fourth Wave Record Factory sure does know how to serve up brilliantly beguiling sounds that ate you well out of your here and now. Next up is this, 'Dondon Bushi' 7" by Shoukichi Kina, Champloo and Tomoko Kina that explores a mix of Okinawan traditional sounds and modern grooves. The Mbira dance mix of the A-side jam is a bubbly rhythm with worldly percussion and soulful melodies that echo folk majesty and are topped with a wonderful weird vocal from Shoukichi Kina. On the flip, there is a more lazy and downtempo style dub rhythm, 'Tie Island' (No Man's Island mix) which is another worldly trip.

Review: We're big fans of what the Whiskey Pickle label has been doing over the course of its first few releases. This 10th outing from Silver City is another case a point. Across four fine cuts, it explores deep house and Balearic sounds with real heart. 'Atalaya' opens with dreamy and shiny synths up top sprinkling in some subtle cosmic energy and 'Nomad' then gets more down and dirty. 'Before' again casts you adrift under starry skies on a warm summer's night and 'Calisto' is for when the lights go down and the dancefloor is where you want to be.

Review: Skatman's sounds often merge different facets of different genres into something fresh enough to pique the interest. This new album on Cognitive Prophecy is another case in point. It is club-ready tech and minimal but with standout character such as the squealing lead and auto-tuned vocal fragments of 'Fresh' which make it sound super futuristic. There is a warm afterglow to the vamping chords of ageless house jam 'Feel It' and 'Dream On' very much gets you into that mindstate with its widescreen synth smears.

Review: German label Oonops Drops is ever more essential if you ask us and tidy 7"s like this prove why (as does their mission to focus is on "sustainability, climate protection and socio-cultural values".) Review: Flower Records fusion masters Masato Komatsu and Ryo Kawahara are Slowly and are adept at everything from dub to disco, soul to post-rock. They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Following a couple of standout 7"s in 'Tripping Out' and 'Let Some Love In' already this year comes 'Time Trip.' It is a lush bit of slow motion big beat and dub, with heavily treated Japanese language vocals over a fat, churning rhythm. An instrumental is also included on this crucial 7".

Review: Jorja Smith fans have been keen to hear from the contemporary r&b star since her 2019 debut album. Finally she returns with a fresh eight track offering that continues where that album left off. Be Right Back does develop the themes in different ways and ends up being a more broad and diverse collection of tracks that feature often paired back production. Some tunes are just her and a guitarist, others are late night slow jams with gentle beats. Her voice has matured since we last heard from Smith and seems to now have a bigger range and this record is all the better for it.

Review: While the Reflex was the first to forge a career out of multi-track re-editing (which would have been called remixing back in the disco era, since you are rearranging using the original parts), plenty of producers have followed in his footsteps in recent times - not least popular disco and funk party-starter Smoove. Here he serves up a ninth instalment in his excellent 'Multitrack Reworks' series. On side A he does a stellar job in reinventing Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' as a squelchy, synths-and-slap-bass sporting mid-tempo disco anthem, complete with spine-tingling vocal breakdowns. He opens side B with a stripped-back, dubbed-out take on Al Green classic 'Let's Stay Together', smartly emphasising the bittersweet beauty of the original version's orchestral accompaniment, before delivering a sweet, head-nodding take on the Emotions' 'Blind Alley'.

Review: Veteran Newcastle-based producer Johnathan Watson aka Smoove is back with the third instalment in the Multitrack Reworks, a new series that will be putting out limited edition, hand-stamped white label 12's that are made from reworked tunes constructed from the original multitracks. This one features the deep down and dirty P-funk of A-side cut 'Deep', while over on the flip Watson lends his Midas touch to a solid reconstruction of a certain deep funk classic by Slave, as well as a spruced up soul classic for all the heads out there on 'Superman'.

Review: Smoove is one half of the legendary edit duo Smoove and Turell from Northern England. He goes it alone here on the fourth volume of his Multitack Reworks series with two slices of the kind of grooves that we know and love and him for. A-side 'Live' and flip track 'Egypt' are both prime cuts of timeless funk with driving drum breaks and plenty of catchy and hooky melodic motifs. These limited edition, hand-stamped white label 12"s always do damage on the dancefloor so are well worth picking up.

Review: This is one of the most ambitious 7"s we've ever come across - it is an EP with 11 'tracks' that all play out like a beat tape with interludes crafted by SNDTRAK. It has everything a good beat tape should have - dusty drums, ill samples and a rich sense of soul and storytelling. It moves at pace through the different moods and grounds with gorgeous pianos, sunny vocals, lush strings and mellifluous melodies all grabbing your attention at various points as it plays out. A wonderful and cultural trip through sound.

Review: Nothing but gorgeousness seems to characterise the work of the Minimal Wave imprint over the recent years. It's a label that is both unpredictable and continuously elegant in its choice of reissues. This time, it's a wonderful unearthing of Soma Holidays cult-hit, Shake Your Molecules. The Franco-American duo was part of Brooklyn's clique of artists throughout the 1980's, and although their sound is firmly representative of that era, the tracks are still ridiculously fresh and seductive both in their melodies and vocals. The title track is a sort of synth-pop tune gone wrong in a good way, where drugged-up lyrics meets morphing synths and metallic drum machines, whereas the Dub cut could easily be played in most techno DJ sets these days. On the B-side, we have the charming, atmospheric glow of "Too Many People" and "Art Dimension", the top pick in our opinion and one which is screaming to be be remixed into a contemporary house tune.

Review: Japan is well known for doing things with a truly distinctive and often slightly out-there twist. Reggae and roots are no different and are sounds that have long been explored by artists in the Far East. Muffin is a new label from Japan that will allow us to Delbert into the scene's latest works and now they return with a second curious and lovely 7". It opens with Sonia's 'Cloudy' (feat Emi & Gel) which has angelic pop vocals and a nice earthy dub rhythm below next to bright synth chords. The flip features 2shanti with 'Bongo Dub' (feat Goja Bongos) which slows things down to a nice heady crawl.

Review: The Sorcerers usher in something of a new era here with Exit Athens, which is a further investigation of the worlds of Ethio-jazz and library music from the 60s and 70s. Now the group consists of Joost Hendrickx who has made his mark with the likes of Kefaya, Shatner's Bassoon and Abstract Orchestra, as well as Richard Ormrod on saxes, keys and flutes and ATA label head and bassist Neil Innes. The rhythms here are driving and funky with exotic percussion and plenty of vintage keys as well as great combinations of horns, flutes and vibes. It's a maximal sound but one drenched in soul and which immediately transports you to another world.
