Review: Last year, Brian Eno served up his latest critically acclaimed album in the form of FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE. Now he follows it up with the much anticipated instrumental version. Despite his advancing years and the sheer scope of what he has already accomplish dint he ambient world - not least devising the genre in the first place - Eno still manages to excite and intrigue here. The artwork alone is beautiful, and the music inside is similarly lush - widescreen cosmic soundscapes with subtle melodies and shifting timbres, pregnant empty space and a knack for sounds designs with meaning few others can match.

Review: A true enigma, an artist that represents all that was fascinating and romantic and alluring and intriguing about 20th Century sounds, Brian Eno was always going to need a feature length documentary, when the time was right. Premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Eno, Gary Hustwit's ode to the man, myth and legend, wowed critics and blew audiences away. Not least because it uses a computer programme which selects footage and edits the movie so a different version is shown at every screening. Innovation befitting Eno, removing the visuals and focusing on the sounds readjusts our vision to bring Eno into greater focus. The breadth of what's on this soundtrack is remarkable, from upfront indie on 'Stiff' and the weird folk-pop of 'Spinning Away', a John Cale collaboration, the ghostly post-rave of 'Cmon' with Fred Again, spectacular pianos of 'Motion In The Field', ethereal ambient vocals on 'There Were Bells', the angular punk dominating 'Third Uncle' - we could go on, and on, and on.

Marking their eighth full-length LP, Eunoia proves testament to the sextet's enduring legacy with its dexterous marrying of cathartic screamo and post-rock serenity. Throat-shredding howls are subdued under mercurial waves of ethereal crescendos, pulling from cavernous quiet to utter bombast, whilst melodious intricacies weave a hypnotic tapestry of aquatic, abyssal despair. Boasting a tenure spanning multiple decades, the collective's latest endeavour serves as yet another accomplishment that consistently places them in their own lane, admired from afar by the countless acts they continue to influence yet simultaneously eclipse.

Review: Benjamin Epps sharpens his craft with L'enfant sacre de Bellevue, the successor to La grande desillusion, amounting to the second of two records to excavate the French rapper's history and personal growth through self-reflective, fine-tipped lyricism. This is a record driven by ambition and vulnerability, tracing the contours of personal struggle, pride, and purpose; Epps balances tight productions with a fierce bravado, one not considered counter to introspection or emotive soul-bearing. Epps operates with clarity and control, further solidifying his status as one of the most technically gifted voices in French hip-hop today.

His Your Love Is My Desire encapsulates the essence of smooth 70s sound and came in originally in 1980. Now newly remastered, the album radiates infectious grooves and heartfelt lyricism with its silky vocals and the tight, funky instrumentation all full of undeniable charm and timeless appeal. Standout cuts like the titular track and 'Just Me and You' showcase his band's impeccable musicianship and knack for crafting irresistibly catchy hooks. With its lush production and soul-stirring melodies, Your Love Is My Desire is a quite gem in the realm of classic soul.

Review: Ernie Story's Meditation Blue is a catnip record for serious collectors. Many have longed for it to be reissued and made more readily available and now they get the wish thanks to Japan's Groove Diggers series on P-Vine. This was originally a private press record which explains its scarcity after it was recorded in 1997 in Minneapolis as the one and only album by the singer-songwriter and producer Ernie Story. It's a seamless fusion AOR meets modern soul with laidback grooves and a hint of gospel to really elevate it. A must-own record for soul collectors with plenty of emotional high points.

Review: Eroya is a Lagos-based collective bridging generations of musicians who trace Nigerian music from the 1940s to today's Naija grooves. Their sound weaves so called styles such as palm-wine, agidigbo, juju, highlife, Afro-funk and Afrobeat traditions. Key members include Sina Ayinde Bakare, son of juju pioneer Ayinde Bakare, juju legend Fatai Rolling Dollar, Afro-funk saxophonist Prince Eji Oyewole and Afrobeat pianist Duro Ikujenyo of Fela Kuti's Egypt 80. Highlights on this album include Alaba Pedro's soulful 'Ekaete', Tejebaby's hypnotic 'Africa', and Oyewole's flute-led 'Experience'. With its bubbling jazz textures and deep rhythmic energy, Eroya is a perfect tribute to Nigeria's enduring musical contributions.

He has served up similar here before alongside the likes of boss man zake and this time goes deeper than ever into slowly shifting soundscapes that are pregnant with emotion, grey in scale but with a real sense of melancholic beauty. Review: This special The 35th-anniversary reissue of Come Away with ESG celebrates the groundbreaking debut album by the Bronx sisters. It's a proper genre-defying classic that shaped hip-hop, house, and post-punk with its signature minimalist funk. ESG's stripped-down sound is built on raw drumbeats and hypnotic bass lines and defies traditional labels with a more groove-driven, horn and organ-free alternative to funk. Their influence spans decades and has inspires artists across several genres which is why Come Away remains a classic and one that proves that true rhythm lies in the spaces between the beats.

As any funk lovers will know, Come Away with ESG is the Bronx sisters' pioneering debut album and a genre-blurring masterpiece that is accepted to have very much helped shape hip-hop, house, and post-punk with its signature minimalist funk. Decades later, their influence remains undeniable and has inspired countless artists across multiple genres. French label Favourite now presents a first ever reissue of the eponymous LP that was recorded in Caracas by a number of talented musicians. It has strong Latin and funk overtones. Squelchy synth sounds and is a must-have for anyone interested in this fine fusion sound. The band started off playing jam sessions that grew ever more refined to the point that they eventually lay down this enduring masterclass.

Review: Resonance is the superb new album from Essa and Pitch 92. Essa is something of a veteran who back in the early part of this millennium was putting out tunes under the name Yungun. He is a Londoner and lawyer who played a key part in the UK's golden hip-hop era and picked up props for his work from dons like Nas while also working with De La Soul, Wu-Tang Clan, Guru, Slum Village and Pharoahe Monch. This record taps into that time with its soul-drenched, low-slung and late-night beats, specially and politically aware lyrics and gorgeous samples. A contemporary classic steeped in authenticity.

Review: Lora Logic, co-founder of UK punk legends X-Ray Spex, was famously ousted before recording their 1977 debut, Germ Free Adolescents. Undeterred, she formed Essential Logic, a post-punk outfit celebrated for angular sax lines and distinctive vocals. Their 1979 debut, Beat Rhythm News (Waddle Ya Play?), reached number 11 on the UK Indie chart and now arrives on CD to mark its anniversary. Logic reunited with X-Ray Spex for Conscious Consumer in 1995 and revived Essential Logic with 2022's Logically Yours boxset and 2024's Rekalibrated, featuring a diverse array of remixers. This Deluxe Edition includes the original album, a compilation of 1978-1983 recordings and new sleeve notes penned by Lora herself.

It is his fourth long-player in all and shows off his knack for rolling drums and majestic melody while serving up some sweet vocal collabs. Next to the timeless drum &bas sounds come a wealth of influences from rock, indie-pop, techno and downtempo, with lots of lush ambient designs and plenty of hummable top lines. His own vocals also feature on tunes like the heartbroken Fall Awake, while legendary mic man DRS is in fine flow on 'The Current' where he muses on self-medication and more. Neon Dust is another complete album from one of the scene's finest.

Review: Leonard Dillon aka Ethiopian is a bonafide reggae legend who was backed by a top shelf selection of musicians for this previously unreleased album. Omnivore Recordings have acquired Nighthawk Records and Blackheart Music Publishing which is what has made this possible, and they do a fine job with it. The original album was recorded in 1987 when Leonard had already penned two great albums. This one was inspired by hearing tales of a Jamaican drummer on tour who talked of playing with a hot studio band. Leonard wanted to recreate that, and so followed this all-star session band.

Review: It's not often that a previous unheard recording of a giant of jazz is found loitering in the depths of someone's personal collection, but that's the case here. These recordings of legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans, laid to high-quality tape in 1964, were discovered last year in the personal archive of jazz musician Ole Matthiessen. Now fully mastered, it's a genuine unheard "Holy grail" - a set of recordings that show the versatility and quality of Evans' playing. Basically, it's a fantastic collection of piano jazz numbers, with Evans either playing solo, or accompanied by little more than a drummer and a double bassist. If you love jazz, you need this in your life.

He fled Brazil in 1974 and settled in France which explains why this one came on the Free Lance label in 1979. It is his one and only album from that time before he moved to the USA and was recorded with Parisian artists plus fellow expatriate Manduka. Packed with gorgeous songs from front to back, this reissue has been reissued and remastered from the original mastertapes.

Review: A third album of wonderfully intimate, idiosyncratic songwriting from multi-instrumentalist Stephen Gilchrist - formerly the Stuffy in the much loved Stuffy & The Fuses - in his Stephen EvEns guise. The name may be singular, but from the choir of voices singing the opening tune 'A Song For Europe' to the child's voice at the end of seafaring epic 'Hello Salty Salty', this is very much a community effort and feels like it, with Stephen's core collaborators Jimi Scandal (guitar) and Crompton Whesp (drums) joined by guests like former Curve/Echobelly bassist Debbie Smith, longtime Cardiacs keyboard player William D Drake and Hurtling/My Bloody Valentine guitarist and keyboard player Jen Macro. The mood palate is on just as grand a scale as the personnel list, from the Nick Drake-style acoustic guitar/strings interplay of 'Firefly' to the beefy hip-hop backbeat of 'BBQ Head & 7 Bells', a two part track, the first half dedicated to the joys of cooking in the garden, the second about paranoia and the threat of violence. Elements of psychedelia, some gorgeous analogue synth tones, a penchant for a quirky time signature and/or arrangement all add to what's already a very tasty concoction that anyone with an ear for a tenacious earworm or two will love.

Review: Icelandic pianist and composer Eydis Evensen's sophomore album The Light is a further expansion of her sound that not only offers her arranging and playing skills but also for the first time her lyrical creativity. The artist herself cites the theme of the rough and rugged landscapes of her native Iceland and how they have shaped her personality as a big influence on the record. It is one of hope that brighter times are ahead even though life might be dark right now. The album was written while she was going through a period of closure and relief and that really shines through.

Review: Back in 1984 music bible NME ranked Eden 20th best album of that year. Skip forward nearly 40 more and it has lost none of its unique charm and intoxicating sense of personality, bringing in an array of elements that weren't par for the course in those days and largely still aren't.

Everything But the Girl's first album, it arrived four years before 1988's groundbreaking Idlewild - by which time their acoustic instrumentation fully shared the space with dance synthesisation - and was considered part of a long-since almost-forgotten sub-canon, sophisti-pop. Bringing elements of jazz, bossa nova, and jangly indie together, it also aimed a sucker punch at the eyes of critics with lead single 'Each & Every One', in which Tracey Thorn focuses anger from being frequently ignored and patronised for being female into a volley of poetic, deceptively laidback lyrical fury.

Review: Since turning his hand to music production midway through the last decade, XL Recordings owner Richard Russell has delivered a couple of predictably hard to pigeonhole, guest-packed albums as Everything is Recorded. Russell, of course, has an admirably bulging contacts book and as deep a knowledge of British music - be it hip-hop, grime, rave, jazz, experimental electronica or otherwise - as anyone. The depth of both is naturally evident on third album Temporary, with Russell and a dizzying list of guests delivering atmospheric, sample-rich fusions of head-nodding, hip-hop leaning grooves, field recordings-heavy sample collages, woozy dream pop, sub-heavy nods to UK bass, slow-motion neo-folk, blunted trip-hop, contemporary UK jazz, hazy Americana and much more besides. That it works as a coherent and sonically adventurous album is testament to Russell's increasing skill as a producer and standalone musical artist.

Review: Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora became known as "the barefoot diva" because, well, you guessed it, she often used to perform on stage with no shoes on. Her sounds are often classed as world music and she often sang in her native Cape Verdean creole but also on occasion in French and Portuguese, always with a certain melancholic aura. Her Distino di Belita album was a second studio long player with Jose da Silva and it includes a mix of her signature acoustic mournas and electric-coladeras as well as her most popular tunes, the superb 'Nova Sintra' and moving 'Distino di Bilita'.

Review: Originating in 1979 from the squatting movements of Amsterdam and Wormer, The Ex are one of the most dynamic, experimental and longest serving punk acts of the original Dutch scene, known for their anarcho-punk ethos, seamlessly blending elements of noise-rock, jazz, noise, no wave, free improv and traditionalist folk stretching from Hungary to Turkey, Ethiopia, Congo, and Eritrea. With over 20 full-length LPs to their succinct moniker thus far, If Your Mirror Breaks is the first album from the collective since 2018's 27 Passports, continuing their fearless sonic expansion with a ten-part series of surrealist daydreams, calls to action, ominous warnings and bursts of vitality tapped into the pulse of time.

Review: The Excursion's 1968 album Night Train, led by organist Jerry Allen, fuses jazz, mod and beat influences into a distinctive sound that has stood the test of time. Featuring a cover of the evergreen gem 'Green Onions,' the record epitomises the musical energy of its era and though relatively obscure at the time, it has since gained cult status among collectors. Original vinyl pressings are now rare and highly prized as its unique blend of styles and period charm make Night Train a standout release in British jazz history, which was ever shifting in the 1960s.

Review: Following on from 1987's Death Before Dishonour which saw Scottish punk legends The Exploited stray from their long-established street punk meets Oi! style and begin embracing a much heavier crossover thrash direction, 1990's sixth full-length The Massacre would double down on this venomous new approach. Drawing on elements of speed metal and hardcore, not only is the material on display the most ferocious of the band's seminal discography, but statistically (like that means anything to true punk lifers) serves as their most successful release to date. Breakneck pace, frenetic riffage and even by standard definition, a notably pissed off performance from incomparable frontman Wattie Buchan, combine to make The Massacre an essential latter-day contribution to the heinous realms where hardcore and thrash make the ugliest of bedfellows. Repressed on blue vinyl by Nuclear Blast, this 2xLP edition also features the four bonus tracks originally included on the 2014 reissue.

Review: The Butcher Basement is a reimagined and blood-soaked rebirth of Extermination Dismemberment's 2010 debut album, which is dripping with gore and heavy with brutality. The wholly re-recorded release captures the grotesque atmosphere of its original conference but with added detail worked into the sounds. With these revamped compositions of fresh material rooted in their early style, plus sharpened production, these metal sounds hit harder than ever and thrive in morbid theatrics. Rather than just a simple reissue, The Butcher Basement is a whole new resurrection.

This record is a life-affirming romp with their famous hybrid sound tasing in all manner of different styles, eras and scenes. Some high-profile features from Sampa The Great, Kojey Radical, Emile Sande and Nao bring extra goodness to this record which is certainly a product of the current London scene but also owes a debt to the sounds of southern Africa. It all adds up to a real doozy.

Review: Ezra Collective has described their hotly anticipated second album, 'Where I'm Meant To Be', as "a thumping celebration of life". As with their previous work, it's rooted in the band's love of on-stage improvisation - call-and-response instrument solos abound throughout - and peppered with contributions from guest vocalists including Sampa The Great, Emeli Sande and Nao. Musically, it's undoubtedly joyous, blurring the boundaries between contemporary UK jazz, afrobeat, hip-hop, dub, Latin rhythms and soft-touch electronics. The plentiful highlights include steppers-powered dub-jazz workout 'Ego Killah', sparkling opener 'Life Goes On' and the Afro-Cuban brilliance of 'Victory Dance'.

The record transforms their fine live performance into a rich, immersive home listening experience with Hainbach's signature use of nuclear research gear, tape loops and vintage electronics weaving haunting, ever-shifting textures throughout. As such the pieces pulse with a sonic spark that captures the spirit of experimentation and collaboration and is taps into plenty of avant-garde thinking in its approach to drone and ambient.

Review: This iconic bossa nova album is essential for anyone exploring Brazilian music. Featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim (the 'Tom' in 'Elis & Tom') arranging and performing alongside the remarkable Elis Regina on vocals, the album's arrangements are elegantly minimal which means Regina's vocal prowess is left to shine. Klimt is behind this new reissue on orange vinyl which sounds as good as ever. The grace of the vocals and the sunny melodies are truly escapist no matter your milieu and help make this a standout record from two of Brazil's greatest stars.

Forever regarded as 'The Godfather of House' it is now almost a decade since his passing. In his prolific career he hooked up with Eric Kupper many times as Director's Cut and this is a collection of their best works. The album delves into improvised jazz grooves and features longtime collaborators Anna Butterss on upright bass, sax from Josh Johnson and Jay Bellerose on drums. The compositions are carefully crafted to capture the essence of a single night's setlist and reflect the unique atmosphere of the now-defunct Enfield Tennis Academy. Review: Following years of notable collaborations with some of jazz's leading voices, saxophonist and band leader Walter Smith III finally broke through in 2023 via a first headlining album for Blue Note. On his return to the label, Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben is Not, Smith pays tribute to the Texan city of his birth in the company of Jason Moran (piano), Eric Harland (drums) and Reuben Smith (bass). It's a pleasingly breezy, positive and expertly crafted affair, with the quartet running through a series of ear-catching Smith compositions and a radical (and rather good) interpretation of an old Sam Rivers number. A wholehearted tribute to the rarely discussed cultural richness and diversity of Smith's home city.

Now they are putting out the results on this superb double pack. This project started back in 2016 as a live experimental jam and is now an annual tradition made on loads of analogue gear on the banks of a canyon that was formed many years ago by a melting glacier. The locale provides inspiration - from the fresh country air to the meteor showers often visible overhead - for the music making which is strictly "no preparation, no pre-programming - hardware, friends and live improvisation only."

Originally premiered to a full ovation at the 2017 Molde International Jazz Festival, this six-part suite finally sees release, recorded between Oslo's Rainbow Studio and Ora Studio in Trondheim. Berg furthers his rep for rhythmic complexity and emotive depth to a 14-piece ensemble featuring standout artists Daniel Herskedal, Rob Waring, and Hayden Powell, while vocalists Kirsti Huke and Sissel Vera Pettersen ensure a graceful vocal topline. Echoes of Pat Metheny and Kenneth Dahl Knudsen waft through the compositions, but Maetrix stands firmly in Berg's own voice, radiating the sense of a collaborative effort years in the making.
