I See A World (3:33)
GIve Me Love (Always) (3:44)
Review: Get your hips and heart around this bit of L.A. boogie by the elusive Ben White and you cannot help but feel better. It is a highly sought-after rarity that disco collectors have been fawning over since forever. It was originally reissued as a 45 by the great Athens of the North and now comes this 7" version which was sourced from Andy Noble, who has often helped the label out before. It features two sides of exceptional modern soul and boogie that blend rhythm and grove in magical ways that are never going to age. 'I See A World' has lovely and tender falsetto vocals and 'Give Me Love (Always)' is more of a party starter.

Your Love Makes Me Crazy (6:27)
Review: A vault of formerly unreleased Don Blackman material recently surfaced via the Chicago DJ/producer/digger Marc Davis, who in recent years struck up a relationship with the children of the mysterious New York pianist and songwriter. Now this wealth of jams finally gets released: 40 years' worth of unheard Blackman - cassettes, CDs, discs, reel-to-reels, paperwork, even VHS tapes - inevitably once more reignites the obsessive fan interest in his music, which sprang from its already-mystical cult status in the rare funk and soul-digging world.

Shady Lady (4:25)
Review: Bloco & Soul Essentials are back with their smooth, feel-good vibes with their 7" There For You. Side-1 features the title track, a joyful slice of soul with a fantastic horn section and classy vocals. It captures a warm, 70s mood with smooth strings and an overall laid-back groove that's perfect for fans of classic soul sounds. On Side-2, 'Shady Lady' offers a slower, funkier groove. The track's funky bassline and gentle piano keys create a relaxed, sultry atmosphere, while the rich blend of guitar and smooth vocals tie everything together beautifully. There For You is an essential pick for anyone who enjoys soul music with a touch of Japanese funk and jazz influences, delivering timeless grooves with a modern edge.

Rhythm's Got Soul

Rhythm's Got Soul (Lose Control) (4:11)
Rhythm's Hot (Afro instrumental) (4:13)
Review: Rhythm's Got Soul is a sonic trip back to the fever-pitched disco era, where Asabi Goodman's powerhouse vocals and Geoff Boardman's dynamic production converge to create an electrifying dancefloor experience. Bursting through the stratosphere with all frequencies blazing, the track treats listeners to pitched horns, filtered drums, and sultry vocals, reinforced by Andrew 'Bigfoot' Leslie's everlasting bass. Momentum builds with Dave VHS's rhythm guitar and vamp keys, accompanied by hectic percussion, culminating in a groove that's both syncopated and loose, thanks to the MPC4000 sample treatment by The Soulicitors. On the flip side, 'Rhythm's Hot' (Afro Instrumental) takes listeners on an Afrocentric trip, with a relentlessly persuasive percussion groove reminiscent of Midnight Marauders chords. Well-timed transitions spread smooth like butter, weaving elements like A Taste Of Honey basslines into an instrumental strut that builds to a disco-fever crescendo. It's a monster cut that keeps the energy high and the dancefloor moving. Asabi Goodman's vocal versatility, effortlessly shifting from sweet and soulful to commanding and powerful, adds depth and emotion to each track, while Geoff Boardman's production shines through, blending samples and live instrumentation into a resonating dynamic disco experience. 'Rhythm's Got Soul' is a standout collaboration that begs to be checked out.

Rhythm's Got Soul (Lose Control) (4:11)
Rhythm's Hot (Afro instrumental) (4:13)
Review: 'Rhythm's Got Soul' is the highly anticipated collab record between singer-songwriter Asabi Goodman and producer/arranger Geoff Boardman aka. Blunted Stylus. A testament to the enduring efficacy the mixture of belter vocals and powerhouse production, 'Rhythm's Got Soul (Lose Control)' and its contrapuntal 'Afro Instrumental' make for raunchy, impudent soul-dance divinations, with booming kicks n' claps, felt-out breaks, and longing harmonies making up their effusive bulk. The B is particularly great, making use of spare components and one-off vocal injunctions to "come and dance with me."

Oh My (3:57)
Review: British multi-hyphenate James Alexander Bright is soon to return with his third album and ahead of that you can get a taste of what to expect in the form of this irresistible electro-boogie banger. 'Straight Line', says Borght, "started out as a wonky homage to 80s & 90s radio" and is "based on the memory of meeting someone you want to stay up all night listening to music with". His voice takes the lead with LinnDrum beats and wispy synths, lithe pads and a slapping bassline. It's sultry, steamy and sure to get temperatures rising. 'Oh My' is a superb jazz-funk workout in a late-night Theo Parrish style.

Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. I Know You I Love You (bonus beats version) (3:18)
Review: This, ladies and Gentlemen, is big news. After a break of 12 years, pioneering West London broken beat collective Bugz In The Attic have reunited to deliver a brand new, ultra-limited 12" containing fresh revisions of 1981 Chaka Khan classic "I Know You, I Live You". The A-side "Chakattic Mix" is particularly wonderful, layering Khan's ultra-positive, life-affirming vocal above the crew's trademark bruk-up beats, jazzy bass and sensational jazz-funk synths (provided, no doubt, by original crew-member Kaidi Tathtam). Over on side B, they up the spine-tingling "end of night" factor via a version containing just music and vocals, before once more proving their immense drum programming skills via a delay-laden "Bonus Beats" DJ tool. In a word: brilliant.

The groove, crafted by percussion, bass and keyboards, is infectious, while the horn ensemble's arrangement is a testament to Central's unique style. They were part of an exciting and emerging scene that fused funk, soul, jazz and more and their catalogue continues to get plenty of attention even now, decades on. Backatcha last served up their Visions EP back in February and now they look to their This Is Your Woman 12" which opens with the title track complete with its brilliant female vocals and low-key funky disco beats. Review: The dazzling Star Creature label has an impossibly feel good future retro disco-funk gem on its hands here courtesy of E Da Boss. E has been turning out killer jams for many years and this time joins forces with Ishtar for 'Fool 4U'. It has funky-ass bass slaps down low, with plenty of jazzy and cosmic keys up top and boogie grooves that make you move. The vocal is acrobatic and brings sultry soul on the E live remix. On the flip the original is a little more upright with 80s chord vamps, noodling guitar licks and the vocal still bring the soul. Two gorgeous cuts for cosy dancefloor vibes.

Review: Unsung funk and soul septet Freedom Force only released one single, 'What I Feel', in 1980. A testament to real obscurity, it made up just one of five releases to ever grace the catalogue of one Sundown Records, based in Greenville, South Carolina in and around the early 1980s. Now reissued by the tireless diggers at Mad About, we now get to hear the song, alongside its complement 'Stop Running', in all its freshest glory, flaunting the synergetic falsetto harmonies of Dennis Cannon, Eric Blackmon and co., as they implore the listener to stop running and embrace their love.

Sparkle (1985) (4:21)
Sparkle (2014) (4:26)
Review: Greenwood's 'Sparkle,' originally recorded in 1985 and long forgotten, found a second life thanks to Tokyo's DJ Muro, who included it in his Hawaiian Breaks mixtape in 2009. This unexpected resurgence of interest prompted Greenwood to return to the studio, resulting in a full-length album in 2014 that featured a newly polished version. Aloha Got Soul brings both the original 1985 and 2014 versions of together on a 7" vinyl, now available in a stunning 'sparkling' gold variant. The track, a brilliant English adaptation from the city pop master Tatsuro Yamashita's For You album, is pure 1980s city pop with its shimmering production and infectious groove. Greenwood's newfound success with "Sparkle" has reignited their passion, leading to the release of their sophomore album, Music Book, which continues their exploration of city pop with more Tatsuro Yamashita covers. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the band, this single is a delightful piece of music history, offering a perfect blend of nostalgia and timeless charm.

Have A Little Faith (2:48)
Review: This reissue of The Jungle Rat is the second in a series from Names You Can Trust. The first was a doozy, as is this one, and suggests their Panama Gold Series is going to be totally essential. This is the first time this particular holy funk grail has ever been reissued. It's raw, expressive funk with big rhythms, bigger horns and impassioned vocals with plenty of florid melodic motifs. On the flip, things slow down and get more deep and pensive with 'Have A Little Faith.' The belting vocals are repacked with real power and backed with talkative horns.

Pearly Gates (3:58)
Review: Rick James Dwells In The Abyss is the debut release from the London based outfit, The Kanpai Quartet. It comes on their own label and combines everything they are known for - the rich musical melange of late 60s and early 70s library music with plenty of louche jazz grooves and subtly funk drumming. The title track is a real doozy - a subtle mix of soft melodies and persuasive groves that you feel you could listen to for days. On the flip, 'Pearly Gates' is deeper, quieter, and just as beautiful. The Heliocentrics's veteran drummer and producer Malcolm Catto engineered and mixed the record so it sounds superb.

Review: Fingier Records is a new Acid Jazz sub-label that is back with a brand new 7" from The Kevin Fingier Collective. It's a real dance floor heater that is perfectly aged and authentic as it mixes up Northern Soul and r&b with driving guitar rhythms and steamy piano chords. The horns are killer but the vocal is the icing on the cake. On the flip things get Latin flavoured with the bossa-tinged mod jazz of 'The Great Akerman' which is defined by lush flute and organ vamps. Review: Mamiya Takako cut her teeth in late-'70s Japanese girl group Pao before striking out on her own with 1982 debut album Love Trip. Full of sweet, sugary, synth-laden pop songs that drew on then contemporaneous jazz-funk and soul sounds, the album sold relatively poorly at the time but is now considered something of a classic. This seven-inch single offers up two of the set's more sought-after cuts: the glossy, glassy-eyed and undeniably loved-up title track, 'Love Trip' - think FM synth sounds, soft focus sax solos and bubbly jazz-funk bottom-end -and the slightly more up-tempo, funk-flecked sunset breeze that is 'Midnight Joke'. Tokyo Sniper (4:36)
Review: CMT hits its tenth release and serves up a super sweet 7" featuring a fascinating fusion of sounds from Ryusenkei. The A-side here, 'Spring Rain' is a mix of jazz funk, city pop, disco and plenty more, with lush instrumentals and her own delicate vocals sung in Japanese, though she appears to sing the title in English. On the flip is 'Tokyo Sniper' which is a more slow and sentiment soul sound with neat keys and riffs, lush arps and plenty of rich pianos that frame the vocals - which pair off Ryusenkei with a male response - perfectly.

Review: Sangre Joven was originally a side project that was set up to release covers of international disco and funk hits for Discos MAG. The collective was started in Peru in 1974 by sax player Nilo Espinosa who also assembled the Nil's Jazz Ensemble after spending years playing in a jazz quintet in Berlin. 'Zamba Zamba' is a tsingle from 1974 that is a true-to-the-original cover of 'Samba Samba' by Colombian brothers Elkin & Nelson. It brings plenty of exotic sounds with uptempo Latin vibes, elements of descarga and boogaloo and more all served up with a funky rock twist.

Say She Sh - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love" (3:42)
Jim Spencer - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love" (4:03)
Review: Brooklyn-based psychedelic soul group Say She She have exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and multiple TV performances, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Organic and authentic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 track 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' didn't get much attention at the time - his attempt at doing disco wasn't well received - but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is expressive and powerful against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This single has both Say She She's cover - as well as the original - on a 7" disc.

Review: Say She She is the psychedelic soul group from Brooklyn that's exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and the pleasure of touring Europe and North America, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Authentic and organic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 attempt at foraying into disco 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' wasn't received amazingly at the time, but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is zany and expressive against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This 7" contains both Spencer's original track and the interpretation by the trio, pressed on white vinyl.

The Light (feat Ronnie Foster) (3:54)
Geno's Discotheque (3:56)
Review: Smoove & Turrell return with a killer single, which opens with the gospel backing of label mate Izo FitzRoy before John's incredible voice and social lyricism and Smoove's unmistakeable production lift us up into 'The Light'. Legendary US Blue Note keyboard genius Ronnie Foster joins the party as only he can; one of the very few instrumental guests Smoove has ever wanted (or needed) beyond his own band. With frontman John Turrell repurposing the cynicism towards the powers-that-be - be it the media or parliament - to positive ends, this is a veritable paean and urgent call to "rise above it and let the light shine in", in his own words.

I Believe In Miracles (3:52)
I Believe In Miracles (instrumental) (3:51)
Review: Back in 2010 composer and Latin jazz specialist Claudio Passavanti put together a scaled-down ensemble of Latin musicians and percussionists to record a salsa cover version of the Jackson Sisters disco classic "I Believe In Miracles". The seven-inch single was a riproaring success, with jazz and Afro-Latin DJs around the world turning it into a bona fide scene anthem. Happily, Passavanti has decided to reissue it on red vinyl to celebrate the track's tenth birthday. It's a superb cover all told and, somewhat surprisingly, "I Believe In Miracles" actually works really well as a Salsa record. Full of fiery horns, sing-along, Boogaloo style vocals and infectious percussion, we actually prefer it to the over-played Jackson Sisters take. Recommended!

T Funk Collective - "Since I Fell For You" (feat Mali) (4:01)

Review: The story goes that T Funk Collective were formed during lockdown after the wealth of time offered by the anti-pandemic measure allowed Manchester DJ T2Funk to hone and streamline his crate-digging chops - leading naturally to the formation of a collective of producers and turntablists, who now contribute their own modern funk bits to their very own label. 'Since I Fell For You' is a quality, hi-fi instrumental funk number suited for DJs and dancers alike. You'll be hard-pressed to find anything less inhibition-melting for some time.

Review: This one is such an evergreen summer classic that it sells out whenever it reappears and gets reissued on a regular basis. Last time was last summer but now the rays are back in our lives we're glad it is available one more. Brazilian jazz vocalist Tania Maria is a true icon with a huge back catalogue of music behind her. Here, Soul Brother look back to her 1983 album Come With Me and lift a pair of pearlers for this vital 7". 'Come With Me' is a sundown slinker, with Maria's airy tone gliding over the sprightly piano chords while on the flip 'Lost In Amazonia' is a joyous, scat-powered slice of jazz funk with incredible slap bass flex. Essential summer grooves.

Review: Brazilian jazz vocalist Tania Maria is a true icon with a huge back catalogue of music behind her, but of course it sometimes helps if a diligent digger weaves a path through the reams of albums and pulls out a couple of the best. The Light In All Of Us (3:59)
Review: On The Line features Vancouver producer and keyboardist Jonny Tobin while Maya Killtron is featured on vocals and the result of the collaboration is a smooth, soulful and AM radio.song that captures a genuine 70s pop sound of a bygone era. Jonny shines throughout the piece and especially on the solo. For the second side of the 7", 'The Light In All Of Us' is a slick instrumental that hits all the right notes. This 7" is pure class.
