Desert Rose (3:46)
TNT (4:06)
Review: Indonesia-based Babon was founded in 2023 by longtime friends Wahyudi T. Raupp and Rayi Raditia and craft instrumentals addressing environmental issues. Their sound fuses Melbourne's vibrant music energy with dangdut rhythms, gamelan percussion, and melodic keroncong folk styles. Here they debut on Batov Records with the wonderful 'Tropical Desert Music' which blends Indonesian traditions with Afro-Latin funk, Morricone-inspired grooves, Bollywood breaks and blues. It's the sort of sound that is perfect for fans of Khruangbin or Sababa 5. The A-side 'Desert Rose' is a spaghetti blues anthem, while the flip 'TNT' tells a miner's tragic tale through cinematic, explosive instrumentation.

Tema De Batman (3:01)
Tema De Onibus (2:33)
Review: While Celio Balona's lengthy recording career focused on Brazilian popular music style MPB, this once-rare outing now given a long overdue and much welcome release is about as far from what most would consider 'popular' as you might imagine. Not that the sounds don't reflect what was en vogue at the time, but more to point out the fact that chart-friendliness is married to a real sense of surrealism.

As the cover and title might suggest, inspiration is found, to some extent, in the original Batman series, and specifically its instantly recognisable theme tune. Here, that track is ripped apart, its motifs borrowed and repurposed to craft something that's altogether out there and yet strangely familiar. A great example of how to experiment without making us realise there's a daring experiment going on.

Review: Bamma Gamma returns with a sizzling slab of funk in the form of 'Omelette' via Detroit's renowned Funk Night Records. This one is a digger's dream, raw, gritty instrumental funk with break-heavy drums, tight guitar licks and basslines so greasy they practically drip off the record. True to Funk Night's underground sound, Omelette is unapologetically retro and authentic and serves up irresistible dancefloor heat that feels like a lost '70s cut that has been newly rediscovered. For DJs looking to inject some analogue soul into their sets, it's a no-brainer.

A year after release in 2003 it got recognised with a Mercury Music Prize nomination and spawned some big singles. Now, 20 years on, it arrives once more but in an all-new and dubbed-out fashion. The six cuts include three which have never previously been released in any physical format and bring a fresh dimension to the originals.

Come Back (2:26)
Review: Not to be confused with the contemporary songwriter Belles, 1960s Canadian soft rockers The Bells, 1980s British pop rockers The Belle Stars, or the seminal Detroit techno anthem by Jeff Mills, Numero Group invite you to step back in time and experience one of the best under-referenced 'response songs' of all time. Taking a lead from Them's 1965 hit 'Gloria', The Belles rework the format to sing about a guy they like. "M-E-L-V-I-I-I... M-E-L-V-I-N, Meeeeelllvviinn" the chorus kind of goes, backing track set to a lackadaisical, classic, jangling, looped rock 'n' roll stomp. Backed with the B-side, 'Come Back', which sets a lighter but brisker mood with its up tempo vocal quartet, delicate snare rolls and catchy six string chords, this is quite the trip to and through another era.

Come Back (2:25)
Review: First came the digital exclusive, then the 7" repress. This newly reissued Numero version of The Belles' 'Melvin' is a throwback to the 1966 garage rock riffer by the all-girl group, known for their releases on two released Tiara Records around that time. A monologuing, excitable song, 'Melvin' hears the girls pine after one local stud, Melvin, who visits the narrator at midnight. The track is flanked by 'Come Back' and 'Unchained Melody', an instrumental jumper and a waltzing paean for Melvin's love, respectively.

Top Brass (Bare Essentials mix) (3:41)
Review: Composer Matt Berry aims to mimic the classic iconic Library Music label KPM with this new outing on Acid Jazz. It is the first in a series of such releases and it does a fine job of following in the label's tradition of providing the musical bedrock for classic British TV series and international movies. KPM used composers such as Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield and Berry proves he is right up there with this 7". 'Top Brass' is a funky instrumental with dramatic strings that add a sense of tension to the rude boy swagger of the rhythm. On the flip is a more stripped-back 'Bare Essentials mix' which is just as good and a little more menacing.

Review: Having played a slew of inimitable and unforgettable television comedy characters over the past decade or so, from Toast of London's Stephen Toast to Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd, Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh and Todd Rivers in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, you could be forgiven for expecting Matt Berry to use songwriting and music as another form of hilarious release. That's definitely not the case. There's plenty of release on I Gotta Limit, but this is anything other than satire. The first new music to come from Berry's 2025 album, Heard Noises, the two tracks here are pure joy, authentic and genuinely impressive on a technical level. Exchanging lines in a duet with Kitty Liv for the titular number, the vibe is part Northern Soul, part psych rock, and pretty much all completely captivating.

HIs 2019 album Gelin Aysem on Arsivplak is a gold standard from the genre and one of its key singles gets serve dup on its own 7" with a special insert. Carried on the ever trustworthy Wick Records, this 7" leads in with the organ-charged big beat of 'Time Is Not On My Side', which channels the 60s to perfection. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to tell it's not a curio from six decades prior. Review: Blackwater Holylight sacrifice their latest EP 'If You Only Knew' to the Suicide Squeeze gods, providing an intermezzo of cosmos and sludge. A chthonic dark psych explosion if we've ever heard one, we hear metal, shoegaze, and psychedelia culminate to an iconoclastic crunch point, as strange auraic statues of Cthulhu shatter before our eyes, evoking the god beast in actuality, not just representation. Lead track 'Wandering Lost' hears the band tear up constellate skies, as producer Sonni DiPerri shapes the track's many shifting structural tides, evoking the many emotional turmoils and stretching-thins of life; Sunny Faris (vocals, guitar, bass) further emphasises its point, that is, to embrace the inequitable unknown.

'Postcard's' light, jaunty melody is irresistibly catchy, earning comparisons to Paul McCartney's Beatles work. Baby Never Say Goodbye (2:36)
Review: Formed in Harrow in 1964, The Bo Street Runners were a short-lived r&b blues-hued garage rock band that reflected the signs and sounds of the time. Standing up to their peers pretty well, it's a case of instability killing the cat rather than a lack of ideas, with nine members going through the lineup in the two years the group were officially active for. Among them were future Fleetwood Mac drummer, Mick Fleetwood and vocalist Mike Patto, who some may remember from outfits such as Spooky Tooth, Patto and Boxer. Bo Street Runners is one of just four singles the troupe did for Decca, a brief back catalogue that culminated in a single extended player. This is a small but insightful introduction to their sound and a clear sign of just how good they were.

Review: Fresh instrumental Afro-funk-disco magic from LA-based quartet The Bombillas, once again emerging from their post-LP slumber with the complementary 'Kidi Bloom' and 'Hatif'. In no rush to release again since 2022's 'Nac Nac/Senebi', this new 12" is suitably taciturn and unaffected; the A-sider riffs on distinctive Arabian folkloric music styles, its brand of funk closing in on a harmonic minor key, as David Michael Celia and Tyler Nuffer digitally riffle the electric keys and vintage-amped guitar respectively. 'Kidi Bloom' is a similar pre-car-chase scene complement, bringing cluing vibraphones and mod-wheeled synth work to a relative slow jam.

This trio of artists take cues from the label's co-owner Leon Michels and his work interpreting the Wu-Tang but with this own energy. They dropped a first EP back in 2014 and since then have looked to jazz, hip-hop old and new, soul and cinematic opulence for their inspiration. This new 7" comes as the outfit is finishing off its second full length and is a fine taster of what to expect with a show stopping two-sider that will soon find its way into you heart.

This classic of the genre has never been available on 45rpm before now and is sure to fly off the shelves as a result. It's a sax laced - obviously - seducer with a funky rhythm and steaming hot organ chords doing a busy dance. Where Do We Go From Here? (4:06)
Review: The 60s Liverpudlian rock quartet are famed for their song '6 Day War', which has been sampled from the likes of DJ Shadow in Tokyo Drift and Pusha T on his album released earlier this year. This track is undoubtedly a classic, written in the aftermath of the ongoing Arab-Israeli war of 1967, '6 Day War' is one of the best anti-war tracks of all time. The slow jam-rock ballad comes from the band's album 'Oh What a Lovely War!' released in 1973 which has not been released in Britain until now, making this a landmark pressing. The record is a psychedelic soft-progressive rock LP with emphasis on heavy guitars like in 'Lay it Down' and even pulls from folk rock in 'Dirty Delilha Blues'. Colonel Bagshot were almost criminally overlooked, though their music seems to consistently stand the test of time and it's easy to hear why. The sound is quintessential Liverpool rock, even down to the naming conventions being evocative of The Beatles.

The majority of their music has come out thanks to Gabriel Roth's sublime Daptone Records, which also seen a vast number of incredible reissues land on its catalogue. "Maelstrom" is the lead tune on this fine 7", an instantly seductive psych track who electric guitar will have you shivering from head to toes from the very first verse - a total killer of a tune! "Avalanche", on the flip, isn't as visionary or grandiose in sound, but it is still perfectly capable of making you shed a tear thanks to its driving horns and hazy flutters of FX-laden guitar flying around like UFOs. Warmly tipped.

Traffic Sound - "La Camita" (2:48)
Black Sugar - "La Camita 78" (4:27)
Review: Peru has enjoyed a thriving and exciting music scene since the mid-1960s. Bands such as Los Saicos, Los Shain's, and Los York's, to name just a few, released a number of brilliant records that drove young fans crazy and set an example for many to follow. The end of the decade brought about an evolution in sound and new music, as Peruvian bands kept an eye on the groundbreaking British and US artists. One of them was Traffic Sound, founded in Lima in 1967. Over a very short period of time the band managed to successfully develop their career, and by 1971 their Latin influences had overpowered the psychedelic prog vibe of their previous records. The song became a local hit and several versions were recorded by different Peruvian artists. On the other side of this single we find Black Sugar, a Peruvian band considered to be a pioneer group in Latin America in mixing funk influences with rock and Latin rhythms. In 1976, following their gig at Coliseo Amauta in Lima, opening the night for the legendary Spanish band Barrabas, they started to show a growing interest in disco music, resulting in some line-up changes with members leaving the project due to their lack of interest in the new sound and new ones joining in. Their own take on 'La Camita' was released in 1978, and adds a modern twist to the original song.

Review: Byron Bay 60s-psych revivalists Babe Rainbow are the first band to be signed to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's newly created p(doom) Records. When they announced this album at the end of 2024, with the release of single 'Like Cleopatra', it was the label's inauguration. The mystery in all of this, though, is how one earth does King Gizzard find the time to run a label when they release album as quickly as Mo Salah scores goals? Anyways, they clearly have a great ear as they've done the right thing in putting out this album of psychedelic acid pop, with its lysergic jams 80s synth-funk workouts. For all its nostalgia, there are parallels to more modern neo-psych bands that are really appealing, too. 'Aquarium Cowgirl' could have been a great release for the now disbanded London-based band Childhood, thanks to the reverb-y transcendental falsetto and floaty layers of dreamy guitar. Ultimately, this is a great, uplifting mood antidote to all the post-punk and shoegaze that's cornering the market at the moment.

Review: Harvest, the fourth album by BALTHVS, released via Mixto Records, features the Colombian psychedelic funk trio's innovative fusion of Middle Eastern sounds with chill, surfy vibes and nods to their Colombian roots. Named to reflect the band's growth and creative synergy, Harvest marks the first album composed collectively by all three members: Balthazar Aguirre, Johanna Mercuriana, and Santiago Lizcano. Recorded amidst the lush tropical hills of La Mesa, Colombia, the album's creation was deeply influenced by its surroundings. Over a month-long retreat, the trio crafted 16 songs, blending harmonised vocals and tranquil grooves. Tracks like 'Like Coconut Water' and 'Mango Season' captures the vibe of a tropical escape, while 'Anouk' pays homage to their recording sessions' feline guardian. 'Aguacero' and 'Sun & Moon' reflect the diverse inspirations and emotional depth of the album. Harvest signifies a period of profound artistic and personal growth for BALTHVS, showing their dynamic, boundary-pushing approach to music. Known for electrifying live performances, the band continues to impress international audiences.

Review: Balthvs' second album, Cause & Effect, marked a significant evolution from the chill psychedelic vibes of their 2020 debut, Macrocosm. Rooted in Colombian rhythms, the album explores deep house, Turkish music, Vaporwave, trip-hop and disco, all while maintaining the band's signature psychedelic essence. This eclectic mix takes listeners on a dynamic journey through time, space, cultures, and eras. The songwriting and production are praised for their excellence, making Cause & Effect a worthy successor. Tracks like 'Turkish Coffee' and 'Light It Up' are standout favorites, with listeners highlighting the album's dreamy, Latin-infused psychedelic sound. The music of Balthvs resonates with those who appreciate a nostalgic yet fresh vibe, reminiscent of the lost sounds of the 1970s. The band's unique blend of cool grooves and shoegaze elements has created something truly special, earning accolades for their accomplished musicianship and strong, hopeful vibe.

Review: Often compared to peers like Khruangbin and El Michels Affair, BALTHVS stands out with a unique take on psyched-out funk. Their second album Cause & Effect once again blends funk, soul, disco, Middle Eastern melodies and Latin American rhythms into an intoxicating and worldly brew. that comes here limited to 500 copies worldwide and pressed on "Cosmic Forest" coloured wax. The album marks BALTHVS as Colombia's premier eclectic and psychedelic world funk trio following 2020's equally brilliant MACROCOSM. This record evolves their initial chill and psychedelic sounds and infuses them with deep house, Turkish music, vapourwave, trip hop, and disco, all anchored by their signature rhythmic elements.

Review: In 2023, psych-funk and soul specialists BALTHVS embarked on a transformative journey to a remote Colombian region and converted a mango tree-surrounded home into a creative sanctuary. In this enchanting setting, they were accompanied by a mystical feline named Anouk who added an unexpected dimension to their immersive experience. The result of this journey is HARVEST, the quietly prolific BALTHVS's latest musical opus and an evocative testament to their artistic growth. The record marks a new era in their evolution as it captures the essence of their time in Colombia and makes for another profound connection to their surroundings.

Review: After two well-received albums, BALTHVS comes out with their third, titled Third Vibration. The Columbian rock band plays a unique blend of exciting music, with songs often touching on psychedelic, funk, rhythm and blues and Latin, soul and rock music. Take their first song on the album 'All is One' for example - a cornucopia of influences mixing with a shimmering and crisp production that gives off a great 70s vibe to it. Whether you are relaxing by the pool, on vacation or you having a mellow get together at your house, Third Vibration is the perfect audio soundtrack and background music for a nice time.

Review: BALTHVS is a collective of musicians from Colombia who have drawn comparisons to the likes of Khruangbin and El Michels Affair for their laidback, colourful and psyched-out funk and soul sounds. They have put out several well received albums and many of them have all dropped on wax this month. This one, one available on vinyl for the first time, they say, is "a celebration of life, a deep respect to the power of music." It is a brilliant mix of funk, psychedelia, Turkish music, Krautrock, cumbia, north African grooves and Latin vibes that enriches the soul while also making you contemplative life deeply.

Review: Bananagun's long-awaited follow-up Why is the Colour of the Sky? reflects the upheaval and transformation the band experienced in the four years since their debut. Released during Melbourne's strict lockdowns, the group was scattered, making it impossible to rehearse or record as they once did. However, that tumultuous period also led to a new creative process. Gone are the meticulously pre-planned tracks of their debutithis time, the songs were jammed, written, and recorded on the fly, capturing raw energy and spontaneity. The result? An album brimming with bold, jazz-infused freak-beat experimentation, groovy rhythms, and spiritual overtones. It's a departure from the sunny afrobeat of their debut, showcasing a more adventurous and human side of the band.

Review: There's a point in Sit, Sleep where you don't know whether to sit up and listen intently, or close your eyes and enjoy some time on the brink of slumber, that ambient place where realities and fantasies seem to drift into one another. Bardo Pond's lasting legacy will always be the kind of tracks that seem to blur lines between worlds, both stylistically and in terms of form. At times abstract, in other moments the perfectly formed solid wall of white noise.

This, Volume 1, was the first in a series of eight EPs that span 18 years, starting out in 2000 and then opting for one in the saga each year through to 2005. At which point things got much more sporadic. Timelines aside, the tracks here are a great introduction both the outfit themselves and the Volume concept - basically experimental improvisation that pulls you between acid rock, noise, shoegaze, and space.

It brings the recording into sharp focus which means you can delve deep into its hallucinogenic charms, as initially recorded in Philadelphia back in 1993. The rather unique band's influences were said to be Black Sabbath, free jazz and no wave but you can also hear shades of early Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 too. The band was a quartet when this was recorded and cooked up some dense garage and psyche-rock sounds with plenty of wax noise and explosive energy.

Bardo Pond, the American psychedelic rock ensemble formed in 1991, continues to captivate with their immersive soundscapes. Their music blends elements of space rock, acid rock, and shoegazing, often drawing comparisons to Pink Floyd, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine. Their work is characterised by droning guitars, heavy distortion and enveloping feedback and rooting in ecstatic jazz and avant-garde influences, creating a dreamlike experience that transcends conventional understanding. Review: It's a strange magic that's driven Bardo Pond in their quarter century as a band, yet it's one that effortlessly separates them from any other band operating in similar shoegaze, drone or psychedelic worlds - the drifting, languorous soundscapes, jammed-out abstractions and Neil Young-style guitar workouts of 'Under The Pines' coalesce into a glorious soundworld of trippy rapture and trance-inducing transcendence, steered by Isobel Sollenberger's radiant and reflective voice. One might argue that Bardo Pond have a certain style they've rarely deviated from in their life, yet 'Under The Pines' is as vivid a transmission as we've yet received from this otherworldly institution.

Bardo Pond's extensive archive recordings series opens up once again with Volume 9, an incisive journey into their hypnotic sound. Recorded in the early 2000s, this one's a heady mix of acoustic ambience and menacing distortion. Infamous purveyors of longform stoner rock, Bardo Pond embrace their sludgestorms with graceful nods to Hawkwind, Earth and My Bloody Valentine. For anyone uninitiated with the band's tranquilizing sound, Volume 9 leans into their mesmeric practise with reckless abandon. Featuring two tracks recorded with ace percussionist Michael Zanghi and the seminal two-parter 'War Is Over', a lilting Floydian strum that's invaded - quite literally - by unreconstructed noise. The Zanghi collaboration, meanwhile, is an Eastern-facing mantra with percussive flurries and distorted modal shifts.

Review: Matador has released the long awaited reissue of Bardo Pond's iconic 1999 album Set and Setting, remastered and pressed on striking purple vinyl. Known for their expansive and immersive sound, Bardo Pond's Set and Setting remains a standout in their discography, featuring the epic eleven-minute opener 'Walking Stick Man' and the intense single 'This Time (So Fucked)'. This album captures the band at a peak moment, blending heavy psychedelia with sprawling sonic landscapes. Set and Setting might not be Bardo Pond's heaviest record, but it's certainly among their fuzziest. With the fuzz dialed up to eleven, the album teeters on the edge of sonic overload, creating a swirling, sludgy atmosphere that's a dream for those who love their rock dense and gritty. Bardo Pond's music can be challenging to categorise, with their discography swinging from focused psych-rock to sprawling, loose jams. In the 90s, they didn't capture the mainstream attention of bands like Sonic Youth or Mudhoney, but they carved out a unique niche, blending shoegaze, desert rock and Krautrock influences into a potent, heady mix. Set and Setting, though perhaps not the easiest entry point into their catalog, encapsulates the band's distinct approach. While it might lack traditional hooks or radio-friendly tracks, it's rich in the droning, psychedelic explorations that define their work. For those who crave unfiltered, immersive jams, Set and Setting stands as a prime example of Bardo Pond's enduring appeal.

Review: First-time vinyl pressing for Bardo Pond's 'Volume 3', one of the many self-released CDs in the 'Volumes' series from the Pennsylvanian psych-rock-gazers, first released in 2002 after a period of flirtation with Matador Records. The six tracks on this EP are the product of various rare, raw jam sessions, many of which last over 15 minutes long, after the period in which the band defected from songwriting and went full drone. Save for the lucky few that got to cop the CD when it first came out (in all likelihood, it circulated among the most rabid of fans and confidantes only), most of us haven't heard the album in its entirety until now.

Leave no doubt though, this is still the band fans have come to know and adore with their reliable brand of fuzzed out psychedelic guitar solos, crushing riffs and catchy hooks. Just one spin of lead single 'Last Word' should be more than enough to dispel any concerns whilst signalling a gloriously grim and captivating new era for the group.

It takes in music he wrote while a part of the legendary British prog rock outfit Pink Floyd as well as material from his solo career in the years after. Newlyeemastered and remixes also make up the original tracklist, which was overseen with the watchful eyes and sharp ears of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. The album didn't chart so well but still serves as a superb overview of the career of one of Britain's great singer-songwriters.

Here they reissue their iconic 1967 album 'Beat Of The Earth', fusing Lou Reed-y rock n' roll with East Asian elements - and a lo-fi, mono palette to boot.
