Watarase (Joe Claussell remix) (16:00)
Watarase (feat Yuki Kaneko Symphonic Poem) (13:15)
Review: Some expansive, cinematic, orchestral spiritual jazz for you here, from the trio of talents that Fumio Itabashi, Kuniyiki and Henrik Schwarz. While the latter two are generally better-known for their deep and sometimes tech-tinged house and ambient productions, the original mix of 'Watarese' (featured here on side B) is a dense, immersive jazz soundscape laden with evocative Japanese vocals, improvised piano, moody orchestration and definite nods towards vintage free-jazz. Spiritual Life supremo Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell provides the remix and, somewhat predictably, steals the show. His take is gently rhythmic, sun-splashed spiritual jazz full of hand percussion, fluid piano motifs and rubbery double bass.

Sweet My Ear (4:40)
Sweet My Ear (instrumental) (4:38)
Review: Berlin based Afro-Soul duo Jembaa Groove consists of bass player and composer Yannick Nolting and singer-percussionist Eric Owusu. Backed up by a further five players to form a septet, their music aims to cement the reputation of West African musics like highlife with the frenetic pace of Berlin's underground music scene. 'Sweet My Ear' is their latest single, packed with a steady Ghanaian funk, muted horn section, and multi-layered rhythm section, effecting a casually shuffly sound. With the instrumental in tow too, you can expect this heater sate all ears around, and to deliver on its intention to encourage spontaneous romantic encounters.

Eventide (14:12)
Introduction (4:42)
Happy Gamma Ray (15:13)
Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Kaoru Iiyoshi & The Whip - "Soul Tripper" (3:20)
Alberto Baldan Bembo - "Abat Jour" (2:35)
Review: For the second missive on his Jazz Room Records imprint, legendary London DJ Paul Murphy has chosen to reissue two quality - and, we should add, obscure -slabs of Latin-fired dancefloor jazz. For us the real highlight is Kaoru Liyoshi and The Whip's A-side cut, "Soul Tripper", a breezy, sun-kissed chunk of lazy and hazy boosa-jazz that features some superb organ solos. If you want something a little more energetic, Alberto Baldan Bembo's "Abat Jour" ticks the box. It was originally released on the soundtrack to an obscure Italian film and fully deserves a single release - it's a jaunty Latin jazz delight!

Review: NuNorthern Soul take a brief respite from their BJ Smith series so boss man 'Phat' Phil Cooper can indulge his love for Ryo Kawasaki. Focusing on the period that the '70s met the '80s, Selected Works pulls together five delicious slices of Kawasaki bliss from a boundary pushing discography that spans writing, arranging, producing and playing. For an introduction to Kawasaki, this release is near perfect, taking in sublime jazz through heaving slabs of funk to out-there electronic vibes. Extra context is provided in the extensive sleeve notes from Marc Rowlands that pull from his 2015 interview with Kawasaki. Despite being five tracks long, this still feels like a generous rifle through the Ryo archives.

Thunder & Sea Gypsys (Medley) (12:36)
Review: Last year, Nunorthern Soul unveiled the first part of their Ryo Kawasaki retrospective. While that focused on selected works created by the Japanese jazz guitarist between 1979 and '83 - including a couple of strong nods towards disco - this follow-up looks at material recorded and released between '76 and '80. There's plenty to enjoy, from the Abbey Road-era Beatles-meets-Courtney Pine vibes of "Snowstorm" and George Benson-in-space trip of "Quasar Infection", to the freestyle, synth-laden jazz-funk madness that is "Nogie". Arguably best of all, though, is "Thunder & Sea Gypsies (Medley)", an impossible-to-pigeonhole journey that moves from krautrock style looseness to cosmic jazz via some thrillingly psychedelic wig-outs.

Review: Kaymany & Asestar hail from Rome, a city where many musicians spend most of their days producing sounds for the television industry and even shopping malls. That's part of the reason the country has such a reparation for great jazz-funk sounds and now adding to that cannon are Kaymany & Asestar. 'Effimera' is glossy and feel good disco with retro future chords, while 'Digressione' has a Bob James style energy to it with its high speed funky bass and incidental chords. 'Capao' closes in Latin fashion with manic keys and more plucked and funky bass slaps making you shake every limb.

Review: Jally Kebba Susso has already released two albums as a solo artist and both took him to new heights. He is a master kora player and afro-fusion pioneer who is base din London but brings the birch musical heritage of his Gambian homeland to all he does. His newest EP, Freedom, is "a heartfelt shout expressing the newfound joy of an African musician whose working conditions, despite his long-standing roots in the London music scene, have sometimes been precarious." He plays with accomplished band members and cooks up four fiercely funky pieces of world music with spiritual vocals.

Review: Glasgow's Ewan Kelly aka Al Kent returns to Swedish label G.A.M.M. for another nice bunch of disco goodies. On the first side, you've got the lo-slung psychedelia of 'Stranger Danger' which makes for a proper dancefloor heater right at the peak of the evening, followed over on the flip by the mellowed blues of 'Galaxy 21' that's perfect musical accompaniment for a Balearic sunset, and the delay drenched dub antics of 'Sugar Trip' closes it out.

R U Kidding? (2:59)
Am I Kidding ? (3:36)
Review: A warm welcome to the world of deep funk to Kidding, a relatively recently formed combo from Hamburg, Germany, whose debut single 'R U Kidding' is one of the heaviest, wildest and most energetic organ funk workouts we've heard in a while. Organist Andreas Paparrousos is undoubtedly the star of the show on the A-side title track, with his jammed-out riffs and solos riding high-octane drum-breaks, infectious, Meters-style guitar licks and a weighty bassline. The band's other players - drummer Lucas Kochbeck, bassist Tim Ertl and guitarist Legbo - get more of a chance to strut their stuff on flipside 'Am I Kidding?, a more laidback affair full of loose-limbed drum solos, flanged guitar licks and fast-fingered bass. As debut singles go, it's a stunner.

Am I Kidding ? (3:37)
Review: Hamburg quartet Kidding have yet to play live and at present only exist as an occasional studio band, but on the back of this killer debut single - available in limited quantities in this stunning purple vinyl version - we expect that to change. The A-side title track is a genuinely breathless and brilliant workout that adds layers of grit and freewheeling Hammond organ intensity to the deep funk sound made famous by the Meters. While the whole band performs admirably, it's organist Andreas Paparrousos who steals the show. More laidback (but no less heavy) B-side 'Am I Kidding' flips the script, with the band's other members - talented sticks-man Lucas Kochbeck, guitarist Legbo and bassist Tim Ertl - stepping up to showcase their undoubted musical skills.

Basil Kirchin & Jack Nathan - "Viva La Tamla Motown" (3:50)
Alan Parker & William Parish - "Main Chance" (3:05)
Review: KPM Music might just be one of the most expansive music libraries out there, boasting a whopping 30,000 exclusive music tracks for licensing. Some of their earliest pieces are being reissued by Measured Mile, the latest of which appears here in the form of a split 7" by four of the label's most treasured contributors. 'Viva La Tamla Motown' helms up the A-side with wonky, laboured drumming and an excitable rock n' rolly guitar and harmonica. 'Main Chance' brings up the B with a more loungeified flutey strutter.

Onyeabor 80 (4:03)
Review: The influences of Incredible Bongo Band loom large over this new one from The Kitchen II Allstars. 'Bongo Grove' is an upbeat tune driven by big horns with Mitchum Yacoub on bongos. It is super short at under three minutes but that is enough time for its potency to really hit home. On the flip, William Onyeabor and Isaac Hayes are the reference points for 'Onyeabor 80'. It is a more steady groove that looks you in and then draws your wonder with its lush flute lines and great contributions from members from The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble and Mestizo Beat.

New Morning (3:08)
Review: Over the last few years, we've become accustomed to Dynamite Cuts plucking gems from killer soul, funk and golden era hip-hop albums. They've thrown in a bit of a curveball here, ignoring those styles to instead mine one of the most sought-after European bossa-nova/vocal jazz albums of all time, Kitty Winter Gipsy Nova's 1978 debut, Feel It. Interestingly, the A-side title track is not a Latin jazz dancefloor burner, but instead a warming, rubbery and sunny slice of jazz-funk perception filled with tasty electric piano keys, loose-limbed drums and sublime female vocals. 'New Morning' on the other hand is a very special bossa-nova excursion, with more life-affirming lead vocals riding a killer groove and samba style acoustic guitars.

Chroma (Alex Attias edit) (7:28)
Review: Greek bass player Petros Klampanis has his 'Chroma' tune reworked by tow contemporary talents here on the Visions Recordings (formarly known as Visions Inc) label. Jon Dixon gets fist with a nice rough edged but punchy rework built on bulky and rickety beats. The lush chords are draped over the top to bring melancholic feels and are sure to work the floor into a lather. The Alex Attias edit is more manic, with wild jazz keys, tumbling drums that feel like they may collapse at any moment and a symphony of chords that rise out through them to take you into the next dimension.

Spirits Of Mauronoros (5:12)
Kolida Hymn (5:35)
Review: Jazzman's Jazz 45 offshoot has proved to be surprisingly eclectic to date, offering up not only more traditional jazz releases but also some worthy and entertaining experimental fare. This release from Greek duo Kolida Babo (AKA Sokratis Votskos and Harris P) fits into the latter category, combining traditional acoustic instrumentation (duduk, alto sax and double bass) with vintage Moog and Roland synthesizer sounds. While the results definitely fall into the jazz camp, there are distinctive nods towards Greek folk music and, more obviously, early 1970s, synthesizer-fired Krautrock releases. As a result, both 'Spirit of Mauronoros' and 'Kolida Hymn' are cosmic, otherworldly and hard-to-pigeonhole, but also hugely inspiring and entertaining.

That Good Thing (4:57)
Review: Spanish reissue label Rocafort present this wonderful slice of highlife from Konkolo Orchestra, this time on nice blue wax as well as a plain black version. It's not exactly clear where, or indeed when, exactly the band came from, but their sound is all you need to worry about. 'Blue G' is a lilting, shuffling message of love and support for future generations, and from the message to the effervescent musicality, it's a no-brainer. On the flip, 'That Good Thing' is an instrumental that spirals outwards on the sweetest keys, joyous brass and dreamy guitar, driven by a pattering drum section to radiate good vibes wherever it's played.

Each the three scalpel jobs leaves the core part of the source track intact and then does a subtle job extending key bits and extracting the fluff. Krewcial is a master of this and here covers a wide range including jazz dance, Caribbean funk, ghetto styles and plenty in between. 'Jazz Salsa' is a playful number that flits about on nimble double bass while the impassioned sax leads, 'Bahama Drama' is straight up dance floor fire that pounds away relentlessly and 'Slums Drums' harks back to a raw 60s soul vibe with angular guitars and a vocal Mick Jagger would be proud of.

Review: This bold project from Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 captures the world's most prominent afrobeat musicians in the midst of a world tour, entering the studio for a one-shot blast that captures the raw, unpolished talent of a mammoth ensemble locked into a groove. Kuti brought his band to the Artone Studio in Haarlem, Holland, and without rehearsal they laid down this album of effervescent afrobeat grooves in one take, cut direct to disc on the in-studio lathe in a true capturing of the moment. Every vibration in the room going through the cutting lathe's needle, now forever immortalized on this record. What's not to love about that?

Review: Seun Kuti has released his highly anticipated album Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) via Record Kicks to great excitement. This album, executive produced by Lenny Kravitz and featuring Fela Kuti's original engineer Sodi Marciszewer, marks a significant milestone in Kuti's career. Following his Grammy-nominated album Black Times, this release showcases his evolution as both an artist and activist. The album features six powerful tracks, each embodying themes of resistance, resilience, and revolution. The track 'Dey,' featuring Damian Marley, emphasises self-empowerment, while 'Emi Aluta' pays homage to revolutionaries, featuring the innovative Sampa The Great. 'T.O.P.' critiques societal values, promoting empathy and a connection to nature. 'Love and Revolution' highlights Kuti's belief in love as a catalyst for change. Kuti expressed gratitude for Kravitz's brotherly support and Sodi's guidance during the production process. He continues to uphold the legacy of his father, Fela Kuti, using his music to inspire social change. This album promises to redefine contemporary Afrobeat while staying true to its roots. Fans can expect an album that entertains, inspires and ignites activism.

Review: Kyoto Jazz Massive's most recent album, the critically acclaimed Message From a New Dawn, was packed to the rafters with highlights, with their surprise collaboration with jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers, 'Get Up', arguably being the best of the lot. Here the track gets a deserved single release, albeit via two 45-friendly re-edits from Japanese scalpel fiend DJ Kawasaki. He subtly snips and chops the track on the A-side '45 Edit', finding room for both the various instrumental solos and vocal sections while keeping the original's focus and energy in-tact. Over on the flip he chooses to showcase Ayers' superb vibraphone solos, jettisoning the original version's vocals on an all-instrumental revision that's a genuine jazz-funk-goes-disco treat.

This time the cascading, Latin rhythm and frenetic horn leads of "Rising" are given the midas dancefloor touch by none other than Ron Trent. Mission (unreleased take) (7:00)
Review: Since coming together earlier in the decade, the Kyoto Jazz Sextet - nu-jazz outfit Kyoto Jazz Massive's "proper jazz" partner project - has provided us with a string of brilliant and beguiling records. This is another. It sees them join forces with Fertile Ground singer Navasha Daya and regular collaborator Tomoki Sanders to cover Pharoah Sanders classic "You Got To Have Freedom". Their version is brilliantly breezy and life affirming, adding layers of summery solos and extra soulful flavour to one of jazz's most positive and awe-inspiring vocal numbers. On the flip you'll find a previously unheard recording of the sextet's best-known (and possibly best-loved) original composition, "Mission". It is fantastic, and sounds like it would get jazz dancers particularly hot under the collar.
