Conjunto Media Luna/Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos - "Bogotokio" (feat Hydro As BNJ) (3:20)
Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos/Conjunto Media Luna - "Cumbia Teriyaki" (3:30)
Review: Conjunto Medialuna's latest album on Little Beat More is a direct trip to the heart of Bogota's rich cumbia scene. The record blends traditional rhythms with psychedelic influences driven by the Colombian accordion and ecstatic percussion that is so strongly associated with this style. These are two of the jams from it, but frankly you should also check out the full LP. It's a tribute to the guacharaca and the lively street parrandas where each song explores new interpretations of classic sounds. Featuring collaborations with N. Hardem, Mismo Perro, Son Rompe Pera, MC Hydro and Japanese-Latin percussionist Muupy, Noches de Medialuna, it transcends cultural boundaries and joins the dots between traditional and modern urban Latin music which is now so hugely popular around the world.

Jorge Ivan Martin - "Yo Tambien" (feat Frank Santiuste - Born74 & Fradinho remix) (4:57)
Fradinho - "Iberica Latina" (4:59)
Review: Eclectic Beats Music is building up a fine head of steam and the sixth outing is a tidy 7" featuring two red-hot Latin broken beat cuts. The opener is a collaborative remix from Born74 and Fradinho who do a superb job of flipping Jorge Ivan Martin's original gem 'Yo Tambien Baile La Conga' into something more contemporary with fresh broken beats, plenty of steamy Latin flavours all finished off in electric fashion with Frank Santiuste's trumpet solos. Flip this one over and you will find Fradinho unearth an easier cut and again update with some compelling broken beats and funk as well as a rich bassline and silky synth solos.

Ce Bon Comme Sa (Dancefloor edit) (5:38)
Review: Dominican band Midnight Groovers was founded back in the early 1970s and went on to become known as one of the best around at what they did. They have a unique sense of sway and swing and cadence to their music and that is well exemplified by the A-side tune on this new 45 rpm. It makes for a double pronged attack on both body and soul. The flip side 'Ce bon comme ca' features an edit by Dominique Panolm, a singer-songwriter from Guadeloupe who keeps the energy but updates it with a more modern touch that is sure to ignite dan floors. Another superb offering from Atangana Records.

Review: This six-track release from the Musci archives offers up sounds that blend traditional instruments with synthesisers and electronics. It comes with remixes by Cut Hands and Nokuit and highlights the work of Roberto Musci, an Italian ethnomusicologist who has been active since the mid-80s. Musci's music gained renewed interest following the 2016 Tower of Silence compilation and got praise from legends like the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. It's dense, challenging, and unlike much else you will hear this year.

Spirit Of Love (Phil Asher Restless Soul Boogie mix - DJ Kawasaki 45 edit) (5:26)
Spirit Of Love (Mano Ariba remix - Ryuhei The Man 45 edit) (5:00)
Review: The ever on point Japanese label At Home Sound is back with another blistering brace of brilliant edits. DJ Kawasaki steps out first with a special 45 edit version of a Soul Boogie mix by the late great Phil Asher, who himself was reworking the Root Soul original 'Spirit of Love.' It's the sort of lush and feel good disco tune that comes laden with a ton of great synths and guitar riffs as well as the all important vocal. The ever green Ryuhei The Man then turns in a bossa tinged, Latin flecked edit of a Mano Ariba mix of the same tune that is packed with sunshine.

Review: Recorded in Essaouira, Morocco, Pedro Vian and Maalem Nabob Soudani present an exercise in melding the traditional and unorthodox, the old and new, the abstract and the direct, the exotic and, well, something even more exotic. Rooted in the Gnawa sound, but leaning heavily into deep electronic worlds, EMS AKS Synthi and buchla meet the qrebeb and guimbiri, everything contrasting yet complementing. The result is this intoxicating brew that transports you to the North African coastline on which this collection was conceived and captured, and then onto somewhere that's almost beyond the terrestrial. Close your eyes, allow the hypnotic looped musical phrases and organic aesthetic of the recording itself to wash over you, through, and around your body. Something to truly get lost in and a fantastic example of cross-pollination done properly.

Review: Sitar and Sistrum tessellate wildly on this fusion album from Baligh Hamdi, the prolific composer and hitmaker behind many Arabic chart-topping songs. 'Indo-Arabic Variations' hears him break from his focus on pop music for an instrumental album that consciously blends the musical traditions of India and Egypt, bringing together Indian sitar player Magid Khan and Abdel Halim Hafez's orchestra in re-reading some of the former's compositions - overall, sitar and tabla dance together with arghoul, ney and other Arabic instruments to produce a strikingly beautiful pandemonium.

Review: Strangelove Music's latest vinyl-only outing dips into the infrequently explored archives of American multi-instrumentalist Frank Harris and collaborator Maria Marquez, a pairing that previously released a couple of sought after "ethno-wave" singles in the late 1980s. "Echoes" gathers together unreleased music made in 1985, presenting it as an unheard album that oozes off-kilter quality from start to finish. Most of the tracks were made using Harris' custom Synclavier synthesizer station, with his humid and breezy new age melodies and dreamy chords working brilliantly with Marquez's folksy, multi-lingual vocals, a variety of world music inspired rhythms and some seriously atmospheric field recordings. It's a formula that guarantees unusual but inspired results from start to finish.

Review: Disco-edged Afro funk by way of Milan, M'Bamina - comprising members from Congo, Benin and Cameroon - enjoyed a 12 year run from the early '70s to the mid-'80s, working with and supporting some of the biggest names possible from James Brown to Manu Dibango. Experimental is their second album (1978) and shows them really finding their groove and some incredibly tight musicianship. Prime examples of their unique funk melting pot include the sudden switches between epic Afro horn blasts and lolloping disco bassline of "Mosi Zole", the glistening universal folk-soul of "Mambu" and the frenetic guitars on the sweaty party blazer "Mamy". All of which still hits hard almost 40 years since it was first recorded.

Review: Tunde Mabadu & His Sunrise released only two albums, and this was the first of them in 1978 with a second to follow two years later. It's one of those brilliantly unique records that mixes sup folky, world, reggae, soul, Afrobeat and jazz into just five potent cuts. An original will cost you a pretty penny so this reissue is likely to go fast. The opener is bonkers frankly as Tunde receipts the alphabet before cracking out the sax. Other jams like 'Bisu-Omi' offer an Afro perspective on reggae while 'Red Jeans' is primed for some dance floor fun.

Review: Nigeria's Tee Mac has been a digger's favourite ever since his tunes came out in the 1980s, and alongside the likes of Willian Onyeabor, he has been one of the driving forces behind his country's afro-rock and afro-beat mania. France's Hot Casa have masterfully put together a compilation containing his best tunes, originally out on the Party Fever LP. This is all quality, but just to give you a little taster, you have the inimitable funk destroyer that is "Nepa",Tee Mac's notorious "Talk To Me" bombshell - a tune that verges closely to proto-house - the sublimely washed-out "Stay On Me", and the painfully hummable swings of "Wake Up". Recommended.

Review: A fresh album from Maga Bo, the Rio producer has seen 20+ years of experience in the electronic music game, and has translated this experience to world-class Afro-Brazilian fusion club music. Since the project's inception, Bo's mission has been to search for "rhythmic common denominators with an Afro-Brazilian-centric focus", manifesting as crystal-clear bass music fusions of styles including samba, dub and cumbia. Through a relentless 19 tracks, there's both ancestral respect and future joy contained therein - not least thanks to contributions from an array of collaborators including Baianasystem, BNegao and Russo Passapusso.

Let It All Hang Out
Review: Brazilian funk and MPB master Tim Maia was brilliant at making music, but less good at coming up with titles for his many great albums. Plenty of them come under his own name - often suffixed by a year - and in all there were 30 albums right up to the year he died in 1998. This self-titled one Mr Bongo is now reissuing on limited apple red and brown vinyl. It packs a real punch and exudes real heat across 12 tracks that fuse his sung-spoken lyrics and funky rhythms with sunny strings and jazzy melodies. Slower songs like 'Sem Voce' are for the romancing hours while plenty of others are pure dancers.

Review: Recorded in New York in 1966, Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata" - her first for the legendary Reprise Records imprint - has long been considered one of the most important and influential South African albums of all time. Strut certainly thinks so and has offered up a "definitive version" that contains both mono and stereo mixes of the album, alongside new sleeve notes that tell the singer's remarkable story in vivid detail. Musically the set is rooted in jazz, but also incorporates sounds, rhythms and instrumentation not only reflective of Makeba's home country, but also nods to American soul, Latin rhythms and calypso (the latter showcasing the influence of her mentor, Harry Belafonte).

The members Joseph Guigui and Laurent "Isaac" Cohen first came together to organise their own weekend parties before deciding to link up to make their own music. They have been joined by vocalist, bass players, trumpet men and sax, drums and keys playing talents and have turned out six albums before this one. Review: This is the cult classic and historically important debut album from Malombo Jazz Makers, a group that was formed in Mamelodi township near Pretoria. It came in 1966 after they had become a well known and loved band who toured across Africa with the second iteration of their line up. It featured Mamelodi-based guitarist Lucas "Lucky" Ranku who was brought in to replace the troubled and erratic genius that was Philip Tabane who had become chaotic on tour. With that lineup change came a change of name from their first years as Malombo Jazz Men. The album fused South African tradition with new jazz thinking and for that reason remains classic.

Review:  Niger hip-hop innovators Mamaki Boys put out this album of head twisting rhythms and bars in 2007, and only on CD. This first pressing showcases their ability to layer traditional and hypotonic percussion with naive melodies from the Nokia 5110 ringtone era and syncopated flows that are our fire. Each beat is based on a Nigerian traditional dance and defines the band's cultural identity. The lyrics are, we're told, even more tightly interwoven and complex as they take down colonialisation, demand to regain control of resources and call to their fellow people to stand together as one. It is a vital and visceral record unlike anything else you will hear this year.

Here is one such story featuring Manrico Mologni and Nicola Calgari, who collaborated around 1990 on a series of rich, accomplished recordings with a highly musical, multi-instrumental backbone and the swoon of chanson in its heart. Due to Manrico's serious illness, these recordings were buried on a DAT and forgotten for 30 years, only to be recalled, recovered from DAT and given their chance in the sunshine. It's very much in line with Archeo's tastes - lush, dreamy pop with a Balearic tint, lovingly mastered and presented with the serious collectors in mind.

Review: Marewrew, a female vocal group specialising in traditional Ainu songs, takes centre stage in Pingipung's exploration of the music of northern Japan's long-suppressed people. Produced by Oki Kano, who is known for his work with Ainu artists, Marewrew's a cappella renditions offer a fresh perspective on these age-old tunes. With voices familiar from their backing vocals for Umeko Ando, Marewrew's harmonious canons create captivating, trance-like experiences. Nature's whispers and birdcalls add depth, while tracks like 'Little Sea God' weave hypnotic tales. The album, Ukouk, curated by Andi Otto, showcases Marewrew's enchanting melodies, including unexpected cumbia and pop-inspired moments, accompanied by percussion and the Tonkori harp.

Released on CD by Scubidu Music, it's now getting a vinyl pressing thanks to Equinox in Australia, getting the music further afield, which it thoroughly deserves. Zwarg's group deals in a modern, sprightly kind of jazz led by her own joyous vocals and flute flurries, but there's also a sense of the deep heritage of Brazilian jazz hanging behind everything she does. It's a vibrant album bursting with kinetic energy - just the kind of revitalising tonic to lift the spirits through long winter months in the Northern hemisphere.

Everything from Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western to the electrified belly dance sounds of Omar Khorshid via homemade 90s bedroom psychedelia colour his groves, which are enchanting and mystic. The artist hails from Belgrade, spent World War 2 in a German work camp and after escaping managed to live out his days in North Hollywood. He made his own guitars in the 1970s, which lends this music its charm, and taught himself to play in order to pay homage to his ancestral home of Yugoslavia.

Review: London's foremost Brazlian music label Far Out reissued Jose Mauro's debut album Obnoxious in 2016. Rumors circulated that he was long deceased, but on the contrary he was alive and well, retired on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. After years of trying to track him down, they present the long-awaited release of A Viagem Das Horas, featuring three previously unreleased and unheard tracks from the original studio sessions and entirely approved by the artist himself. Made during Brazil's military authoritarianism, Mauro and his songwriting partner Ana Maria Bahiana explored concepts of traditional West African religions and Roman Catholicism with Musica Popular Brasileira, psychedelic folk and orchestral music.

Review: Far Out Recordings have long been masters at unearthing and reissuing long-lost Brazilian masterpieces. Jose Mauro's 1970 debut album, Obnoxious, undoubtedly falls into that category. It's long been a favourite with committed diggers such as Gilles Peterson, Madlib and Floating Points, all of whom appreciate Mauro's distinctively melancholic take on the samba sound. Drenched in atmospheric strings and with the singer's bittersweet vocals to the fore, the album sounds like it was informed as much by the Walker Brothers ad Rotary Connection as the sun-kissed sounds Mauro would have grown up listening to. It's not exactly psychedelic per se, but it's certainly impressively atmospheric and occasionally refreshingly dark. File under: "essential listening".

Review: From the bones of Staff Benda Bilili, Congolese misfits Mbongawna Star arise to make their debut. And it's clear their intention to turn African music completely on its head. From the hip-hop style chants and processed vocals of "Masobele" to the punk-like fury and frenzy of "Nganshe" via the soft, yearning bluegrass slides and soul of "Coco Blues", From Kinshasa fuses, amuses and at points confuses. Most importantly it keeps you coming back for more. Genuinely an album like no other.

The opener "Sweet Julu" is now a London two-step classic, while other tracks like "Nomalizo" or "The Village" are more on the disco side, all of them filtered with a distinctly tropical edge! A top reissue!

Review: Afrique Victime is the long-awaited new album by Mdou Moctar. The talented Tuareg guitarist and songwriter is bold in his work here as he makes a new fusion sound where contemporary Saharan music and classic rock meet with field recordings, poetic meditations, full on noise and coarse guitars. Topics that get touched on along the way include love, religion, Western Africa's exploitation at the hands of colonial powers and women's rights inequality. It's a devastating record that makes s powerful and inedible mark.

Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Highlights in the latter category include the hazy Afro hip-hop of Aquil, a tasty Afro-house dub of River Ocean's cover of Timmy Thomas' classic "Why Can't We Live Together", and the lazy, sun-kissed glory of Kutiman's "Bango Fields".

Review: Charif Megarbane is a prolific producer and instrumentalist from Beirut and he is back once again with Marzipan, a first contemporary full length on Habibi Funk. It is a deep trip into his musical universe which mixes up influences from Lebanon and the Mediterranean and artists such as Ziad Rahbani, Ahmed Malek and Issam Hajali. All 17 tracks show off his mastery of composition as much as antigen else - freewheeling grooves from gypsy jazz to ethno-funk that draw on the energies of a bustling market, the lush atmospheres of a sun beach resort and various other of his surrounding soundscapes. It is hugely transportative and excellent escapism.

Review: It was way back in 1984 when Jeannine Sifflet released her sole, self-titled album as Meliza. Amongst collectors of zouk records, it has long been regarded as something as a slept-on classic, and as a result original copies have been hard to come by. The good news is that we've been treated to a much-needed reissue, which presents the re-mastered album in a facsimile sleeve. It's in many ways typical of the Guadeloupe style of zouk from the period, with colourful synth sounds and Sifflet's sweet vocals riding typically tropical backing tracks rich in Juju style guitars, calypso-influenced rhythms and warm, toasty basslines. It's the kind of album that will make even the stoniest of hearts sing.

She eventually played with various bands in her hometown, the inland city of Goiania, and related her debut EP in 2014. Two years later came her head turning debut album and it picked up critical acclaim. Now comes the follow up, which brings in a wealth of electronic sounds, textures, moods and grooves. There are soul, r&b and hip hop stylings to these tracks, which are always most notable because of Mendez's superb voice. It is delicate and soft yet meaningful and strong enough to stand out amongst the lilting grooves and captivating melodies.

Rooted in a musical epicentre renowned for gaita, cumbia, bullerengue, son palenque, son de negro and accordion styles like porros and pajaritos, the initiative celebrates and preserves the region's rich folkloric life. This album documents festive gatherings, knowledge exchange and co-creation inspired by composer Andres Narvaez, a social leader and land-rights activist. A rich mixture of poly-rhythmic afro-soul, jazz, highlife and afrobeat it has an undeniable Ghanaian flavour with Joe's arrangements, keyboard-playing and vocal style adding an extra sophistication to proceedings. This album, one of West Africa's very rarest, was recorded for the Decca label in Lagos and only ever released in tiny numbers in Nigeria in 1975. Two of the tracks previously featured on the Ghana Soundz compilation from Soundway but this is the first time it's been officially reissued in its entirety.

Review: Mi Latinoamerica Sufre is a concept album that seeks to explore the electric guitar's potential in tropical Latin music. Inspired by African highlife and soukous, it reflects the vibrant sounds of Colombian pico sound system dances. The Meridian Brothers are led by Alvarez and embrace a clean, distortion-free approach that pays homage to 70s Congolese rumba, Ghanaian highlife, and Nigerian Afrobeat. The album blends cumbia, champeta, tropicalia and psychedelic rock while remaining centred on Afro-Latino rhythms and through the character Junior Maximiliano the Third, the album humorously explores ego, identity and self-discovery with Alvarez's vocals adding extra charm to what is a sonic and psychological journey.

Though not released in its original sequence, this album is a stunning showcase of Kenyan funk-inspired music. Each band member contributed to the songwriting process during the making of the album which means it has resulted in a diverse and unique collection of tracks where each has its own distinct character. So are, in fact, that its first reappearance came about in 2015, with a single from the LP coming out through the Voodoo Funk label, but Austria's PMG have done us the courtesy of re-releasing the entire album. There is no other way of describing this wonderful music apart from saying that it's a wonderful collection of deep, psychedelic funk bombs of the highest calibre and, while many unearthed albums of this time have gained notoriety in recent years, this particular piece of work has remained in the shadows; once a digger's privilege, it is now available for you in its complete form, as raw and mystical as the day it was first conceived.

Review: This 44-minute solo long player is a striking fusion of European influences and Armenian traditional music all woven into long, hypnotic proto-house grooves. Born in Tabriz, Iran, in 1940, Minassian studied at the Tehran Conservatoire before expanding his musical horizons in Europe and the U.S. At first he wrote chanson-style songs and later gained recognition in film scoring and orchestral arrangements of Armenian folk music. This album emerged from the repression of the Khomeini era and is a rare glimpse into the Middle East's forgotten dance music culture, while also being an evocative, otherworldly work that stands alone.

Now BBE are reissuing this highly prized piece as part of their continuing J Jazz Masterclass series, shining a light on some of the finest jazz from the Far East. Mayamoto started out dancing at Tokyo disco Mugen before embarking on a career as a soul singer, ending up scouted by Suzuki and joining his band. Push captures Suzuki's band in full flow, all fluid bass lines, swooning strings and gossamer keys creating a luxurious bed for Mayamoto's deep, soulful singing style. This record has never been released worldwide and unsurprisingly has been highly prized amongst Western collectors of Japanese music, so you can imagine how long this will stick around for given BBE's reputation for high quality reissues.

Review: Nigerian singer, songwriter, and guitar legend, Mdou Moctar should need no introduction if you keep an ear to the ground of sub-Saharan African music. Then again, the vague region covers a vast area - land in all four hemispheres and around 15% of the Earth's walkable surface. So you could be forgiven for missing out on an individual artist if, for example, you weren't already looking for them specifically. Or relied on Western culture media for tips on what to hear next. That said, problematically tunnel-visioned as the North Atlantic-hegemony of commentators can be, Moctar has been something of a darling to UK, European and US musos for a while now. On Tears of Injustice he presents a convincing case for their continued adoration. A master of Tuareg, a style of music also known as desert blues, it's an intoxicating sound that easily transports and invokes, even if the predominantly Tamasheq language he sings in remains a mystery - arguably another factor in the powerful mythology surrounding his legacy.

The band compose their material in Arabic, Italian and Romani languages and their first release on Zephyrus Records oozes a soul soothing calmness and plenty of colourful folk sounds. The musicianship is second to none as saxophone, clarinet, double bass and trumpets are all blended into one smooth and beautiful soundscape as Serf's voice adds another layer of magic. Whether jazzy and upbeat such as 'Kai Zhas Seka' or slow and mournful like 'Adame' these are all essential sounds.

Review: Original first LP release by legendary Mombasa band: Deep afro funk & jazz by Lou Blackburn and his group recorded 1975 in Germany - original release on the rare German Spiegelei label, contains the most wanted DJ-Spins "Nairobi", "Kenia" and "Shango". Remastered 2006, original cover artwork, re-released for the first time, in memory of Lou Blackburn who passed away far too early: 100 copies limited vinyl edition include a special Mombasa art card donation, cards are handmade by the people of Option Care Centre, a non profit organisation in South Africa to help aids victims and abused women. This is a classic and sought after afro funk LP. One of the best recordings in the genre. Pulsating African rhythms with funk bass and heavy brass sounds. Essential and ultra hard to find album with tons of true killer afro funk breaks. A sure killer set for collectors and DJs! Some also call it "a stripped down Fela Kuti sound", the re-release for the following cult classic "Mombasa - African Rhythms & Blues 2" is already scheduled for 2007 on Sonorama Records. From original liner notes 1975: In describing the music of Mombasa which is a mixture of rhythm, jazz, folklore, blues, spirituals and worksongs, Lou Blackburn would prefer not to use the word jazz. "Many people ask us", he says, "how one describes our type of music. To this I can only answer that I leave it to the audience because I don't want to give it a label, for me it is simply ours, Mombasa's music."

Review: There's rather a lot of mystery surrounding Fortuna Records latest release, which comes from a previously unheard (and decidedly publicity-shy) producer known only as Moontribe. The album itself is intense and otherworldly, with the mystery man or woman dousing heavy African tribal rythms with intoxicating Middle Eastern instrumentation, off-kilter organ lines, mind-altering Jew's Harp motifs and copious amounts of 1970s style type echo. The resultant cuts veering from dense, percussive workouts (wild opener "Moontribe") and jaunty, intergalactic jams ("Technology", "Bottles"), to deep space soundscapes ("Moon's Moon"). It's very impressive and immersive stuff, all told.

Review: For their first full-length reissue, Canopy Records brings new life to Oppressor, a rare 1987 album by Nigerian artist Myke Moul. Long a cult favourite due to its genre-blending style and hard-to-find status, this remastered edition corrects past audio issues and gives the album the sound quality it always deserved. From the opening notes of the title track, Oppressor sets a tone that's both breezy and politically aware, a mid-tempo groove riding on synth-reggae rhythms with a soulful message woven in. The album, shaped in part by reggae icon Majek Fashek and later reimagined in France with a roster of versatile session players, stands out for its seamless mix of styles: island-leaning reggae, glossy boogie, and moments that feel like they could have soundtracked a Mediterranean sunset. "Shadows in the Rain" dips into an 80s synth-funk groove, while "Heading for the Top" is a shimmering, bass-forward boogie cut, setting the tone for a collection that flits back and forth between reggae, funk and boogie.

Review: Magic happens when Mr Thing hits the crates. His ability to unearth recordings you're guaranteed to never have heard before, and join the dots in ways you'd never have thought before, his "Strange Breaks" series is legendary. Long since off-press, to celebrate their 20th anniversary BBE have repressed this seminal 2009 sophomore. From the turbo blues fusion of Roy Head and the speeding Mancini feels of Val Marrall's Orchestra to the more sedate, slinky funk of Johnny Griffith and sunny-side roots of Tinga Stewart, Mr Thing's odyssey remains as inciteful, intriguing and as full of treasure as it did seven years ago.

Review: Mustafa's masterfully crafted new debut album is called Dunya which translates from Arabic to "the world in all its flaws." The Sudanese-Canadian artist digs deep into religious devotion, childhood trauma, gang violence and romantic intimacy in hugely personal ways throughout the record and showcases his superb songwriting ability. His blend of genres from hip-hop to soul and r&b comes with novelistic details, lasting hooks and raw and earnest words. It features appearances from collaborators such as Aaron Dessner, Rosali?a, Clairo and Nicolas Jaar but amongst all that Mustafa's confident, distinctive voice shines bright.

Review: Kampala's Nyege Nyege is no longer a niche name in electronic music, having risen to become Africa's most prominent stable for experimental synthesised tracks, carving out not necessarily a sound - artists and albums vary pretty wildly - but a kind of aesthetic which, once recognised, can usually be identified in most output. Of course, there's a problem there, with so much light now being shone on Uganda and the label itself, meaning so much else is missed from nearby countries, let alone this vast continent. Nevertheless, all that attention is not without good reason, and this collaboration between Durban, South Africa-based gqom futurists Phelimuncasi and abstract sound system crew Metal Preyers is a case in point. At once rooted in authentic African dance genres, and yet staunchly determined to reconfigure them, it's pretty much unlike anything you'll hear this week/month/year.

Review: Evangelion Finally is a collection of vocal songs performed by Yoko Takahashi and Megumi Hayashibara from the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance - marking the 25th anniversary of the series' debut. It is also just in time for the release of Shin Evangelion, coming soon to cinemas this year. Features Takahashi's theme song 'The Cruel Angel's Thesis' as well as a new cover of 'Fly Me To The Moon' (2020 Version) featured in the show's ending credits. A new original track comes in the form of 'Thanatos - If I Can't Be Yours' - the theme song for the new feature film - performed by Loren & Mash (formed by British singer Lorrain Briscoe with Martin Lascelles and Evangelion composer Shiro Sagisu) in addition to the legendary masterpiece 'Come Sweet Death, Second Impact' - which is reworked as a jazz arrangement featuring Hayashibara on vocals.
