Review: Tramp Records prove their specialism in rare soul funk, jazz and soul reissues with yet another star salvaging in the vein of late 60s Louisianan garage rock. The Offbeats was the short lived project of one Roger Hallmark and company, and yet only three 7" singles through Frontier Records, Crown Records and Fairday Records ever appeared in his career lifetime, of which 'The Hump/Louisiana' was the second. Now Tramp do a bang-up job of reminding us with this slap-around-the-face twangoff, 'The Hump' being a Hallmark of salacious, rip-roaring rock & roll, and the latter channelling a roomy live feel backed by female screams and unflappably played electric solos.

Review: The Oscillators say they are not a band but instead "an experimental recording collaboration that turned out swimmingly." Back in June they dropped a brilliantly psyched-out soul and funk album that represents their native Seattle scene and was as deep and raw as you can imagine. Now they are back on Tramp with a potent 7" featuring two more super tight cuts. Led by drummer oLLi kLoMp with other members from bands like Rippin' Chicken, the Pulsations, Lucky Brown, the Trueloves and 45th Street Brass, this debut 45rpm features the horn-led heavy funk of 'Cosmonaut' and more percolating and deep cut sounds of 'Off The Clock'.

Review: Shuggie Otis delivers a delightful blend of rock 'n' roll with a twist in Ice Cream Party. Review: The latest addition to Night Dreamer's series, Direct To Disk Sessions, sees Turkish downtempo specialist, Islandman, iconic percussionist and Don Cherry collaborator, Okay Temiz and contemporary saz player Muhlis Berbero?lu joining forces for the very first time. Recorded in just one take, the session captures a one-off melding of the trio's distinct styles. Islandman's signature balearic sound gives new force to Temiz's fiery percussion, reframing Berbero?lu's Anadolu folk influences into a distinctly dance-ready sound. Stand out track 'Fidayda' eases us into the trio's expertly improvised soundworld with an alluring, oscillating saz riff. When Temiz's percussion enters the mix, it arrives with a controlled unpredictability capable of leaving listeners in a trance. While Islandman's production subtly centres the piece, mapping out a pathway from which the organic instrumentation can unfurl. Future-folktronica at its very best

Review: Opa's Goldenwings returns to vinyl after 50 years, offering a remastered take on the 1976 fusion masterpiece that has long been a coveted gem among jazz-funk collectors. Released by Craft Recordings via Jazz Dispensary's Top Shelf series, this album showcases the legendary collaboration between the Fattoruso Brothers, Airto Moreira, and Hermeto Pascoal. Goldenwings blends Latin rhythms, intricate synth work, and lush vocal harmonies into an exhilarating fusion experience. Tracks like the funk-forward title track and the cosmic 'Totem' highlight Hugo Fattoruso's mastery of layered keyboards, while 'Corre NiNa' and 'African Bird' bring a joyful and folk-inspired energy. The album's centerpiece, 'Tombo,' features an impressive suite that leads into the dancefloor-ready closer, 'Groove.' With all-analogue mastering by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, this reissue offers a pristine listening experience, complete with the original album art. Goldenwings is a fresh discovery for a new generation of listeners so this reissue will be a much needed one.

Review: Opa's Back Home was first reocrded in 1975 but not released until 1996; it was the fourth and final album by the esteemed Uruguayan fusion band, whose preferred admixture was usually some melted pot of funk and samba, making for an impressive heuristic building on their intuitive recalling of their mutual upbringing in South America. Mysteriously (for reasons unknown to the band), Opa's debut was shelved and remained so until the mid-1990s. But the story goes that it was recorded after renowned label producer and owner Larry Rosen heard the band playing in a Brooklyn nightclub; with this in mind, Back Home makes for an ironic title, since the sonic turn expressed by the band is not one of homesickness, but rather that of an immersion in New York's metamorphous music scene ('Brooklynville' has an instant proto-hip-hop vibe, if not for its original urban field recording, then certainly for its bulbous broken funk twang). Now reissued on vinyl and CD via Far Out, you won't want to miss this round trip.

Produced by Sergio Rios (Neal Francis, Say She She), Chimera is an electrifying, dream-like odyssey, tripping through the hazy swamps of New Orleans, weaving textures of entrancing voodoo soul, thrumming Afro-funk, and stoney psyche-rock. On Chimera, the Los Angeles-based outfit carves tough, gritty, infectious grooves into heady dance rhythms. Taking its name from a mythical beast with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent, Chimera conjures a state that is at once trance-like and heart-poundingly exciting. The album opens like a heady puff of smoke in the face with 'Hallowed Dreams,' drawing the listener into a state where reality blurs and the music takes control. The focus track, 'Zum Zum,' is a hooky Afro-funk dance floor heater that synchronizes your heart rate to its propulsive percussion, the hypnotic rhythm building into a raucous, psychedelic climax. Here the legendary singer and vocalist Nora Orlandi joins iconic jazz drummer Franco Tonani for a masterpiece of 1960s-early-1970s production that really encapsulates the ambience of a bygone age which feels dreamlike today. Fittingly, much of the music similarly invokes a sense of surrealism and psychedelia. You can almost feel yourself descending into the depths of a strange and beguiling night filled with weird and wonderful characters as these arrangements play out with pin point precision. A trip to another era, but also a trip into the mind's eye and all that may live there. Exquisite, masterful, but most of all utterly inimitable and difficult to countenance.
