Review: French label Good Morning Tapes welcomes Paris-born electronic innovator and 70s GRM alumni Ariel Kalma New York-based trio Asa Tone for some serious deep ambient soundscapes. The wellness movement has never been more polar than it is now but if you ask us, nothing could be better for your mental health and sense of self than sitting a dark room with this one nice and loud so you can soak up its high fidelity designs, the microscopic pads, the whimsical melodies and slowly shapeshifting sounds in all their glory. A tremendous work.

Review: Svaneborg Kardyb, the award-winning Danish duo of Nikolaj Svaneborg (keys) and Jonas Kardyb (drums), masterfully blend minimalism, jazz, and Scandinavian folk influences into a stunning album. Their forthcoming album, Superkilen, draws inspiration from the vibrant Superkilen Park in Copenhagen, a symbol of diversity and unity. Much like the park's transformation from wasteland to communal space, the duo's music evokes serenity amidst the chaotic backdrop of modern life. Following their acclaimed debut Over Tage, Superkilen continues their exploration of lush melodies, subtle electronic textures, and intricate rhythms, into a calm yet dynamic energy. The duo's compositions offer a fresh, Nordic take on jazz, drawing comparisons to artists like Nils Frahm and Esbjorn Svensson, while retaining their own distinct, organic interplay. While less psychedelic and more digitally nuanced than their American counterparts, such as the Benevento/Russo Duo, Svaneborg Kardyb's music remains engaging and playful, with an infectious groove. Their 2024 release is an authentic, refreshing listen, perfect for those seeking tranquility with an undercurrent of joy in an otherwise fast-paced world.

The set includes previously unreleased music and remixes from artists like Madonna, Lewis Taylor, and Count Basic. Originally released in 1999, Sessions compiled Kruder & Dorfmeister's masterful remixes and original tracks, defining the "mood music" genre with its rich blend of dubby downtempo, drum & bass and Brazilian sampladelia. The compilation's subtle complexity and cinematic allure remain as influential as ever, capturing the essence of its era with a smoky, introspective vibe that continues to resonate. Review: To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The K&D Sessions, Kruder & Dorfmeister present a stunning limited-edition box set, available on 6xLP. Mastered by renowned engineer Bernie Grundman, this edition promises an audiophile listening experience. The set includes a newly added 6th LP featuring previously unreleased material, including remixes of Madonna, Roni Size, Lewis Taylor and Count Basic. The lavish packaging boasts gloss finishes, metallic gold Pantone details, and clear UV varnishing on the sleeves. Additionally, it includes a 40-page booklet filled with rare, unseen photos from the original era and extensive liner notes by Max Dax, Robert Menasse, and Werner Geier. A hi-res A2 poster is also part of the package. The standout tracks on the sixth LP include Kruder's 11-minute remix of Madonna's 'Nothing Really Matters', along with K&D's interpretation of Roni Size's 'Heroes' and U.F.O.'s 'L.O.V.E.'. Lewis Taylor's 'Lucky' appears in two remixed forms, one dubbed out and the other vocal-driven. This deluxe release elevates the original The K&D Sessions, which became the soundtrack for countless late 90s afterparties and lounge sessions, to new heights with a beautifully crafted presentation fitting for its enduring legacy.

Review: Jessica Lauren is a cornerstone of the UK jazz scene who has spent decades enhancing recordings and performances for legends like Jean Carne, Dexter Wansel and The Heliocentrics. As a core member of Emanative, her talents are well-known and her latest release, Film, affirms her status as a forward-thinking artist. Originally recorded in 1997 and released on CD in 1999, Film has been remastered and is now reissued on gatefold vinyl. The album's fusion of modal jazz, electronica, library music and field recordings feels remarkably current and blends acoustic and electric pianos, harpsichord and synths in a beguiling fashion. As such, Film cements Jessica's place as an innovative musical visionary.

Review: Steve Leach's Ocean Potion, set for reissue on Be With Records, is a hidden gem of Balearic beach-funk from 1976, featuring Leachiknown today as Seasick Steveiin his earlier incarnation. Originally released exclusively in France on Philips, this LP is a funky AOR and blue-eyed soul masterpiece, brimming with vibrant, pop-funk energy. Recorded with the Crystal Grass Orchestra, the album boasts a lush orchestral sound that perfectly complements Leach's smooth vocals and the rich harmonies of a stellar ensemble of backing singers. The supporting musicians are legends from the French music scene, including Don Ray as arranger and synth player, Marc Chantereau on percussion, Slim Pezin on guitar, Andre Ceccarelli on drums, Christian Padovan on bass, and Pierre Halation on flute. Their combined talents create a groove that is both immediate and infectious, making it hard to believe this record has remained relatively obscure. The reissue by Be With Records has been carefully remastered by Simon Francis, ensuring the sound quality is impeccable. Cicely Balston's expert cutting preserves the record's integrity, while the original sleeve artwork, featuring a topless Leach reclining on a piano-laden flatbed truck at the beach, has been beautifully restored. This long-overdue reissue brings Ocean Potion back to the spotlight, where it rightly belongs.

This eclectic collection features seven tracks showcasing Leonardi's diverse musical range. Kicking off with the unexpected 'Suzi Wong' which blends reggae and dub influences with mutant disco vibes and captivating vocals, it then takes in tracks like 'Anti Narcotics Police,' 'Both,' and 'Rrrrrrr' with uplifting house beats with a quirky pop twist. 'Wonder Girls' and 'Wondering' evoke rhythmic echoes of Stefan Schwander's new work, while 'Deadline' brings funkiness and magical melodies. 7 is a unique sonic journey that brightens any day with its playful coolness and raw charm.

Review: Sudden Records debut Les Hommes' latest LP Si Cosi, describing the record as a set of "pulsar-driven groovetronics, folky modalisms in waltz time; dreamvitations to the cine-lounge." The three piece combo known as The Men have been an active force on the easygoing London underground, having first made their debut in a tiny club in Soho in 1994. They've since occupied the proscenium of lounge and club, relaxedly dropping three LPs and four EPs since then. This fourth LP brings the latest face of lounge music to the fore, with a set of eleven more careful but languorous compositions. Deploying instrumentation from Lowrey organ to bass clarinet to electric piano, the sensibility throughout is one of disbarred ease, best felt on the most muted among the cuts, such as the cricket-chirping modal jazzer 'Veronique'.

Review: Zoltan Nagy AKA P60 has spent the last four years slowly building up his Midnight Fashion label and its dedicated downtempo offshoot, Midnight Fashion Chill. Following a handful of solo EPs on the latter imprint, Nagy has now decided to offer up a first imprint compilation - one that not only showcases his work, but also that of Marcel (AKA sometime Cookin' Records artist Marcell Dudas) and Plastic City regular Forteba (AKA Hungarian stalwart Krisztian Dobrocsi). Musically, the set lives up to its' title, offering an enticing and undeniably blazed mix of DJ Calm style trip-hop, warming 1990s style downtempo grooves, slow-burn Baleric soundscapes, Onra-esque neo-boogie beats and warm, deep and languid, jazz-flecked mid-tempo house.

Review: For sensitivity and naturalism in experimental music, Gosha Martynov & Natasha Sinyakova seize the crown with their new album Imena Rek. On their first foray into the physical, the duo expand the spectral ambience and medicated breaks of their earlier work with lithe touches of organic jazz and Cafe Del Mar cool, creating a complex assemblage of dreamy downbeat and emotive electronica that's entirely easy on the ears. The record is an ever-evolving, life-giving slough; we wade through many restorative swamps, each bearing its own sonic, ecosystemic character. The fen's mouth stretches open wide on 'Pozhaluysta', tempting the listener with an open-skied siren song set to skittish drum pats, while things grow hazier from 'Osvobodi Menia' and thereafter; the trip-hop influence is almost entirely naturalised, shedding the genre's usual rough-edged clicks and pops for a preferential sawn-off, willowy sound, that retains its smoothness even in moments of irresolution and tension, as on 'Rany'. And the slow mangrove whirl 'Iskra' really flaunts the pair's talents, with beautifully played pan flutes, and resonant silicate rustles, convoking a new hallowed ground; we wind up mentally clutching at damp mosses, imagining ourselves laid arrest in a sodden but warm bayou, as we're serenaded by two Armenian-American master musicians.

Review: Malcolm McLaren, probaly best known for managing the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols, left a significant mark on pop culture as a writer, musician, and fashion designer. His 1994 album Paris, produced by Robin Millar (Sade, The Style Council, Everything But The Girl) on the French Vogue label, is now available on vinyl for the first time. The reissue coincides with the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, where the lead track 'Paris Paris' featuring Catherine Deneuve has been officially adopted and is expected to gain widespread attention. The album also includes collaborations with Francoise Hardy and Amina, making it a notable showcase of McLaren's eclectic artistry.

Review: Mculo represents himself on his latest full-length dance LP Bedroom Artist, deepening *eo ipso* his relationship to personal space and making music for 'the other'. In his own words, "I found myself making music for everyone else. What would other musicians think about this record? Would this track get me more gigs? The process of creating become secondary and I fell out of love with it entirely." Clearly having identified the wrong way to go about things, no sooner than this did he embark on an emancipatory approach. Shedding any conscious attachment to external priorities, insofar as he could, Bedroom Artist testifies the ironic power of the bedroom as a site of abject isolation at its worst, yet studious focus at its best. The sonic result of this conclusion, for Mculo, is io-fi, jammy, trip-hoppy beat and beatless excursions, best among which are 'Magogos Garden' and 'Where Are You From, From'.

Hello (3:50)
Review: South London's Medlar returns to Delusions of Grandeur at the peak of his production powers, showing up with a distinctly refined sonic palette on the brilliantly expansive LP, Islands. Known for his deep-cut edits, genre-hopping productions and steady underground presence, he's pulled together a cast of collaborators including Dele Sosimi, Rebekah Reid, Arnau Obiols and more. The record builds on years spent engineering and producing for others, drawing on those skills to deliver something more personal than ever. Blending live instruments, 80s-inspired electronics and club-ready low end, it's less sample-based than past work but still rooted in the recognisable Medlar spirit. Highlights come thick and fast, including the blissed-out opener 'Take A Trip', the wigged-out exoticism of 'Yeah', the acid thrust of 'Luv Interlude' and the emotion-rich Balearica of 'Ibiza'. Top marks.

Hello (3:50)
Review: Accomplished UK talent Medlar's Islands albums mark another leap forward for the always evolving producer. It finds him merging electronic textures with live instrumentation and some top-tier collaborations from Dele Sosimi, Rebekah Reid, Finn Peters and more. 80s fusion, jazz, deep house and amapiano influences all collide into summery sounds that work as well in the club as they do pumping out of the car stereo. From the lush, afro-laced opener 'Take a Trip' to acid-tinged house, freestyle rap and blissed-out Balearica, each track has its own charm and personality. With less reliance on samples and more organic improvisation, this record could well be Medlar's best yet and certainly a great soundtrack to summer.

Even amongst its unpredictable catalogue though this one is a wonderful curveball that has already been supported by Sean Johnston, Jaye Ward, Max Essa and Francois K. It is a debut album from the Italian Michele Mininni that makes for an involving and adventurous trip that blends broken beats, worldly rhythms, jazz, eastern melodies, live drums, and more into a thrilling 15-track opus, all with a leftfield perspective. A diverse array of rhythms, melodies, and instruments from around the globe all feature in this escapist summer delight.

Review: A new bedroom pop outfit, Mystery Time (Ayman Rostom aka. The Maghreban) paints a neatly outlaid sound-picture of quotidian lifestyles and humdrum joys, perhaps specifically those which are used to tape over the harder but more pronely repressible realities of grief and mourning. From the off of 'Thank You Deeply', we're told of "salad days in Archway" and being "on the phone in doorways", suggesting an attitude of listlessness and naivete as key to surviving the otherwise often excruciating experience of living in London. Its self-description as "maudlin" serves it just as well; the record wafts off a kind of haunted contradiction, describable only as the impossible mixture of post-punk and floral chintz, of wallpapering over the ability to feel fully and holistically with yet another lifestyle, pattern, habit, prescription. In Rostom's own words, "The title speaks for itself. Maudlin means emotionally sentimental. Tales, these songs are stories to me, about different times. Grief - there is much sadness and darkness in it, and Love - there is some light there too, a bit of joy, to frame the shadow." Rostom's vocals are just as listless and blinkered, tunnel-sung so as to express emotions through a drab medium.

Review: Marysia Osu's debut album, harp, beats & dreams, is a stunning example of her musical evolution and innovative spirit. Known for her role in Levitation Orchestra and as a Brownswood 'Bubblers' graduate, Marysia blends her classical roots with contemporary exploration in this enchanting release. Originating from Poland and enriched by her musical education in London, she has embraced the harp with profound artistry, now intertwining it with electronic elements and personal introspection. The album opens with the hypnotic 'seatime,' a journey through coastal reverie that celebrates self-acceptance and inner harmony. It continues with 'care to care,' where Levitation Orchestra's Plumm adds ethereal vocals, advocating for self-care and personal space. The track 'memento mori' features YUIS's illuminating flute, echoing stoic reflections on life's impermanence. Marysia's return to the piano and spontaneous clarinet experiments, inspired by a vivid dream, add depth to her soundscape. The clarinet's breath symbolises life's essence, bridging body and mind, enhancing the album's introspective quality. Marysia Osu's debut is a an exciting debut, offering a serene escape thanks to her talent and unique vision.

Review: The Sound of Love International #006, selected by Jay Donaldson (aka Palms Trax), is a vibrant compilation reflecting the eclecticism of his DJ sets and radio show Cooking With Palms Trax. This collection celebrates obscure gems, many self-released or privately pressed, uncovering hidden talent from different eras and regions. Opening with Linda Waterfall's 'Clarity', a 1970s spiritual jazz-tinged folk piece, the album features tracks like 'Follow My Heart' by Sebastian, a soulful, sax-filled soft rock tune, and Frank E. Jeffries Jr.'s gospel-infused 'Did It Have To Be Me'. Highlights include 90s South African bubblegum tracks like El Pedro's 'La Luna' and 'Novidade's Masingita'. Belgian prog-rocker Zardoz's 'Brasilia Drums' and Danish virtuoso Gert Thrue's synth-driven 'I Play The Body Electronic' add cosmic textures, while Flayer's Balearic anthem 'Wanna Get Back Your Love' and Jeancky's 'Variations Sur Protestation' provide a serene close. Palms Trax has crafted a collection of rare finds, mixing genres and decades into a cohesive whole, reviving forgotten artists and creating a joyful, floor-filling experience sure to capture the ears of music lovers everywhere.

Review: Photay aka. Evan Shornstein makes a determined return with Windswept, his latest LP for Mexican Summer. Building on but also somewhat departing from a built repertoire of post-IDM come funky sonics, this latest outing moves in a slightly more new age direction, riffing on the many possible worlds implied by the episteme of "Balearic". On an album nominally about the wind, and with an express aim to "mimic the wind", Photay makes deft use here of everything from wind chimes to blustery transigent noise, working them all between chunks of girded downtempo and confident chugs. Still as percussive and tricksy as ever, Shornstein echoes the likes of Letherette and Throwing Snow, meeting both hot and cold fronts of thermostatic dance.

Review: Some 30 years have now passed since Warp Records decided to repackage and reissue Red Snapper's first three EPs on one handy collection, the efflortlessly excellent Reeled & Skinned. Effectively the duo's introduction to a wider audience, it did a great job in showcasing their trademark sound - an enticing blend of loose-limbed live drums, double bass, intoxicating electronics and snaking sax sounds. As this anniversary vinyl reissue proves, it's a musical blend that still sounds fresh all these years on. The plentiful highlights include moody theme 'Snapper' (featuring Beth Orton), lightly Latin-tinged punk-funk workout 'Swank', the riotous and aggressive 'Wesley Don't Surf' and Sabres of Paradise's incredible rework of 'Hot Flush' - a jazzy, breakbeat-driven slab of dancefloor deepness that ranks among Andrew Weatherall and company's finest remixes.

Liquidising the band's signature jazz, funk, and electronic grooves into a prostrate puree of vivid, electronically augmentable sound, we once again hear Rich Thair, Ali Friend, Tom Challenger and new addition Tara Cunningham perform a brilliant post-punk-dub-disco dramaturge, mullioned at the midpoint by a cracking instrumental redo of David Bowie's 'Sound And Vision', upheld by a true Balearic trestle. The second half, on the other hand, hears a four-track collaboration with the legendary David Harrow, pushing Red Snapper ever further towards unsnapped chunks of dietetic punk-disco delight.

Review: Nashville-based experimental musician Rich Ruth's upcoming album, Water Still Flows, is a journey into immersive soundscapes and introspective melodies. Recorded at his home studio, this seasoned session player, who initally started making his own meditative solo material to help him get over a traumatic carjacking, weaves together crafty loops and drones with the help of collaborators like Spencer Cullum, Ruben Gingrich, Patrick M'gonigle and Jared Selner. The album, set to released via Third Man Records, reflects Ruth's struggles and triumphs as a working musician, capturing both the soothing calmness of solitude and the tense variability of his professional life. Tracks like 'No Muscle, No Memory' showcase Ruth's ability to blend spiritual jazz, synth-infused post-rock, and cosmic ambient into a cohesive sonic experience. With Jake Davis handling the mixing duties, Water Still Flows is Rich Ruth's most cathartic and introspective offering yet.

Beginning with solitary mesmerising loops and drones, Ruth enriches his arrangements with a diverse array of collaborators. The resulting compositions meld spiritual jazz, synth-infused post-rock, and cosmic ambient into absorbing trips that captivate and elevate in equal measure. His latest album, Water Still Flows, is the third in a series of celebrated LPs and represents his most intense and cathartic work yet. Spanning seven tracks, the record finds Ruth pushing his creative boundaries while showcasing how songwriting serves as a deeply personal and grounding expression of artistry.

Review: Sandman Project's Royal Family EP blends West African rock psychedelia with Ethiopian jazz and is defined by its impressive improvisational vigour. Led by guitarist Tal Sandman from Tel Aviv's Jaffa, the instrumental group draws inspiration from Ethiopian jazz pioneers which is evident in tracks like 'Hamsa' with its evocative trumpet and moody Tezeta scale. Lead single 'Circles' exudes punk-like rawness with its gritty bass and driving rhythm. 'Savannah Trip' conjures Sun Ra in the Malian desert, offering atmospheric guitar explorations. Throughout all the cuts, Sandman Project's cinematic style invites listeners into a realm of playful melodies and mountainous textures.

Review: The evocative nature of 'Music For Autumn Lovers' captures the essence of the season with a subtlety that resonates deeply. Adam Scrimshire's gentle, acoustic-driven compositions create a soundscape that mirrors the quiet transformation of autumn itself. The album is a reflection of the shift in atmosphere that marks the change of season, with each track embodying a different texture of autumn's beautyiwhether it's the warm glow of 'Hawthorn' or the introspective stillness of 'Willow'. There's a sense of nostalgia woven through the delicate guitar lines, soft pianos, and ethereal synths, making this a record to return to each year, just as autumn itself arrives with a quiet but familiar pull.

The Detroit-based artist, renowned for his blend of electronic, jazz, r&b and hip-hop, delivers a vibrant, collaborative album that reflects his cultural heritage and personal evolution. Tracks like 'BookaMagick' and 'Runnup On'm' showcase his ability to blend genres and create immersive experiences. Cherry Blossom Baby celebrates Shigeto's return to his craft, honoring both his roots and his growth. Review: Shigeto started playing drums at a young age and spent his childhood immersed in the Detroit and Ann Arbor music scene. After nearly failing high school, except for his music studies, he pursued jazz at New York's New School and later in London, where he delved into electronic production. Since moving to Brooklyn in the early 2010s, he has not looked back and is now a mainstay of the underground and a key artist in the Ghostly family. His new album Cherry Blossom Baby marks his first full-length release since 2017 and is is another succulent and sublime blend of electronic, jazz, r&b, and hip-hop with a collaborative Detroit-rooted sound that celebrates personal growth and resilience.

Live For Life
Review: Oscar 'Sholto' Robertson's album Letting Go of Forever prides itself on being an expansive musical journey, building on the momentum of his critically acclaimed EP 'The Changing Tides Of Dreams'. This 26-track double LP reflects Sholto's rich influences, from Mozart's dramatic 'Lacrimosa' to David Axelrod's eclectic productions. The album's initial tracks, including the evocative 'For The Love Of Stripes' and the atmospheric 'Ligurian Storm', are a signature blend of orchestral and instrumental artistry. 'For The Love Of Stripes' features lush strings and choral elements, interwoven with flutes and percussion to create a nostalgic, dreamy vibe. The track is inspired by the concept of stripes as both a visual divider and a symbol of individuality, which Sholto translates into a stunning musical narrative. 'Ligurian Storm' tells the story of a stormy journey through Italy, combining harp, vibraphone, and synths to evoke the beauty and drama of nature's transformation. Drawing comparisons to the Cinematic Orchestra and Surprise Chef, Sholto's work merges the soulful warmth of jazz and the experimental spirit of 60s and 70s soundtracks. This album should resonate with emotional depth and cinematic flair for anyone who listens.

Review: Endlessness is a deep dive into the cycle of existence. The 45-minute album delicately spans ten tracks guided by a continuous arpeggio that plays throughout, crafting an expansive, mesmerising celebration of life cycles and rebirth. Following Sinephro's critically acclaimed 2021 debut album Space 1.8, Endlessness further elevates her transcendent, multi-dimensional compositional practice, beautifully morphing jazz, orchestral, and electronic music. Through a decalogue of "continuums", a fittingly continual, through-compositional wonderwork is designed and laid to recording, channelling a dignified, spacefaring mood of nobility, as though it were of divine extraterrestrial providence.

Review: Nala Sinephro's latest full-length record, Endlessness, hears the London-based jazz and electronica musician dive deep into the fundaments of nature and existence. Via a decalogue of 'Continuums' - which begin slowly on a note of muted brass and serenely laggard drumming, the first of which rarely stoops to settle on any particular rhythm, more than indulging the not infrequent metric detour - the album swells into a slow but sure expansion in cosmic jazz, which not explicitly but implicitly elicits cosmic thoughts, universal ponderings that exceed the limits of single lifetimes.

Review: There are few more classic albums that are ripe for reissue on National Album Day than this one from British funk and soul pioneers Soul II Soul. It is now 35 years old but has more than stood the test of time and this picture disc version is the ultimate collectors piece featuring the group's signature Funki Dredd logo. Musically it has all the key singles 'Fairplay', which led the way for unparalleled chart success here and in the US, as well as follow-up, 'Feel Free', third single 'Keep on Movin'' and plenty more, all of which still get big reactions in any set to this day.

Review: Konrad Sprenger, as any real heads will know, is a moniker of Jorg Hiller, who works in many fields including composing, producing and instrument building. His work seamlessly blends scientific exploration of sound with pop sensibility and humour. From the diverse instrumentation of albums like Miniaturen and Versprochen to the electric guitar explorations of Stack Music in 2017, Hiller's evolution is ever-captivating. Here he unites these elements into a playful, infectious epic performed by Hiller and the enigmatic Ensemble Risonanze Moderne with guest Oren Ambarchi weaving swirling harmonics into its vibrant soundscapes. These two side-long pieces feature polyrhythmic frameworks blending shimmering guitar harmonics, horns and synthetic bursts into a mix of avant-garde and techno wonderment. Hiller doesn't release very often but when he does, it's worth taking note.
