Gargoyle Records: Aliens On Acid
Cat: AGTE 01. Rel: 07 Dec 20
Alienage - "Mindreader" (4:30)
The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

This Is A Story
Cat: CNR 001. Rel: 05 Feb 20
Jeff The Fool & Wilt - "All I Need" (6:02)
Botwin - "Agostic" (6:07)
Solar Sound System - "B16P15" (4:33)
Nairless - "Blind Resistance" (6:11)
Review: Chat Noir is the official imprint of Paris' Chat Noir Distribution, and will be dedicated to all shades of house music. Their inaugural release "This Is A Story" features Jeff The Fool AKA Antoine Bermann, who has been polishing his house music skills for five years now - and it's paid off! His contribution with The Chaud Records partner Wilt is entitled "All I Need" and it rules the A side. This is exactly the kind of emotive and swing-fuelled deep house that we just adore - think E-Wax or Quality Vibe. On the flip we have some good ol' fashioned liquid drum 'n' bass in the spirit of legends like LTJ Bukem and Alex Reece on the roller "B16P15" by Solar Sound System (Aymeric) and closing it out with yet more diverse sounds is the acidified electro journey "Blind Resistance" by local head Nairless (Flying Structures).

Gypsy Woman (Rave Yard mix) (6:26)
Review: Edit action from the mysterious Rave Yard; this takes Crystal Waters iconic anthem and raves the dickens out of it. Supercharged with an array of breaks and bassbin-busting samples from the era, it's a tastefully tweaked take on one of house music's sweetest standards. Guaranteed to light up any floor. Limited business - blink and you'll miss it.

Hypnotherapy
Cat: TSOL 011. Rel: 09 May 24
No Tantrums (feat MC Pryme) (6:52)
Ochtend Glunderen @ Wildeburg (8:10)
LSD (Love Saves The Day) (8:22)
Ghetto Mind Groove (feat Rocky) (7:16)
Review: Dutch producer Boris Werner's latest EP titled Hypnotherapy, lands at the Spanish label Limousine Dream. The record begins with the chunky house burner 'No Tantrums' that features MC Pryme laying some vocals over the track. 'Ochtend Glunderen' has a great mix of spacey sounds while still remaining focused and directed at a peak time dancefloor. For the second side, 'LSD (Love Saves The Day)' works a hedonistic tribal beat over some top tech house business. Lastly, 'Ghetto Mind Groove' is a clever change of pace that features a nice broken beat. Rocky Mc's over the top and helps get the party started right. Boris Werner is an experienced producer who know what kind of dance music works in the clubs.

Jump Up (Get Beat Down)
Cat: WNCL 049. Rel: 26 Nov 24
Jump Up (Get Beat Down) (5:01)
Jump Up (Get Beat Down) (Rawtrachs remix) (6:03)
Review: Classy dancefloor-slaying action on 10" vinyl no less from West Norwood Cassette Library, combining a thumping four to the floor beat with nifty percussion, a fairly well known snippet of hip-hop vocal and ravey stabs. The results are as hard to resist as they are to classify, except to say it leaves absolutely zero prisoners. "This one had been previously doing the rounds as a 'dubplate only' exclusive," WNCS told us, "cut especially for the Futurepastzine tenth anniversary bash just on the cusp of lockdown ... so it seemed only appropriate to ask FPZ head honcho and fellow Cassette Librarian, Rawtrachs, to attend to remix duty." So flip it over for that equally excellent reworking from Rawtrachs and stand well back - we predict not only a riot, but an awful lot of spilt beer too.

Slowrush EP
Cat: BTR 005. Rel: 13 May 22
Too Real Eyez (7:13)
Bientam (4:56)
Slowrush (7:44)
MOY - "Echolab" (Wiles remix) (6:08)
Review: Ritual Poison's Batrachian sublabel has been slipping out the odd 12" here and there with a more melodic flip to the ravey intentions of their main operation. Following Bufobufo and MOY comes Wiles, who offers up a warm and inviting strain of breakbeat with emotional impact at the forefront of the creative mission. 'Too Real Eyez' keeps the drums steady and rolling and folds acid lines into the mix, but the pads swoon with orchestral poise. 'Bientam' gets a little cheekier without losing that plaintive quality in the harmonic composition, while 'Slowrush' diverts towards outright electronica with a haunting quality. Wiles finishes this record up with a remix of MOY's 'Echolab', which turns into a fractured and submerged trip that doesn't shirk its commitment to languid acid and diced up breakbeat.

Harry Wills & Rob Amboule For Mind
Cat: SER 004. Rel: 23 May 22
Harry Wills - "6 For 5 & Feelin' Fine" (6:23)
Rob Amboule - "Mindright" (5:25)
Harry Wills - "6 For 5 & Feelin' Fine" (Rob Amboule remix) (5:37)
Rob Amboule - "Mindright" (Harry Wills Toasty mix) (5:12)
Review: Up next for the mental health charity label are 4 tracks dedicated to Mind. The VA pays homage to early 2000s nostalgia - with two Garage/Breaks cuts from Harry Wills & Rob Amboule respectively. The two of them alongside Alec Falconer make up 'Phone Traxx', a highly-regarded UKG outfit. Up first is '6 for 5 and feeling fresh', a track that's already been doing the rounds on dancefloors - idyllic for that peak-time club setting. Following that on the A2 is 'Mindright', which contrasts a noteworthy alternative - something you could expect any time, any place, anywhere. On the flip, is a moody remix from Rob - with a bassline that'll wobble any wall in the country. And last but not least, 'Harry's toasty mix', which more than aptly wraps up a release which is arguably the label's best yet. One not to miss.

Hardcore Boogie
Chocolate Factor
DD & Rakim
Review: The highly prolific Greg Wilson steps up with re-edits of three gems from the vaults. Boogie Corporation's "Dirty Rip" gets electro-fied into "Hardcore Boogie", Chocolate Milk's "Who's Getting It Now" gets blended with Random Factor's "Circuit Semantics". Last up is DD & Rakim' blends Eric B and Rakim's vintage "I Know You Got Soul" over the "Squelch" by Dubble D. Hot!

Changing Faces
Cat: CS 048. Rel: 24 Feb 25
Reggae Fusion (Deep mix) (6:41)
On My Way (6:25)
Changing Faces (6:16)
Reggae Fusion (Tuff Mudda mix) (6:06)
Review: Constant Sound is one of the very many labels that is headed up by Burnski and one that he reserves for club-ready tech house and minimal. Wodda steps up for the latest outing and brings some future garage energy to the opener, 'Reggae Fusion' (Deep mix) which is lit up with lithe synths and smart vocal samples. 'On My Way' has more infectious garage vibes to it with the squelchy drums and hits and some nice heady melodies up top. 'Changing Faces' gets more twisted and brings intergalactic drama to the ass-wiggling cyborg tech beats and last of all, a Tuff Mudda mix of 'Reggae Fusion' shuts down with a silky thump and throwback UKG bass.

Cat: BSUN 008. Rel: 30 May 23
Dynamo (5:24)
Dynamo (Etch remix) (5:24)
Breath - Dance (4:55)
Review: Straight off the back of Nicolo's deep, dubby broken beat escapade, Baroque Sunburst strike again with two beguiling breakbeat originals from rising Milan-based Brazilian talent Worli. 'Dynamo' is a purring, rolling tribal breaks piece with strong undertones of techno that you could imagine anyone playing from Villalobos to Meat Katie. 'Breathe - Dance' meanwhile takes a more glacial, up-tempo twist as a foggy, steppy slab of drum & bass that's reminiscent of a Metalheadz B-side or something you'd find on Samurai. Complete with a nutty junglistic remix from Etch and you're packing serious heat. .

Review: Soviett Records is a label set up by a crew of hardcore street music lovers. It draws from rock-n-roll and hip-hop and punk-rave and is on a mission to "release music with a positive intent." The first offering is a great start: it serves up 17 glistening tracks of sparkling and analogue electro, boom-bap and hip-hop that harks back to the 80s but has one foot in the future. This is body music to make you move, complete with scratching, tons of 808s and 909s and funk to spare.
