Review: Abaete's self-titled 1977 LP remains one of Brazil's deepest cult treasuresian obscure gem of Bahian jazz-funk samba that now sees long-overdue reissue. Recorded during a creative high for Bahia's music scene, this sole full-length from the vocal trio blends masterfully layered harmonies with moody synths, groove-driven percussion and North Brazilian rhythmic signatures. There's almost no background info on the group, but the music speaks volumes. Highlights like 'O Rei Do Calang (Calangotango)' and 'Toca Nicanor' ripple with syncopated urgency, while 'Canto Sul' and 'Por Uma Razo De Amor' float with breezy melodic finesse. Mixed by Waldir Lombardo Pinheiroiknown for work with Tom Ze and Zeca do Tromboneithe album is full of freewheeling arrangements, grainy funk textures and subtle psychedelia. Review: From Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley returns with another simmering display of his self-styled Simigwa-funk-part highlife, part jazz, part proto-rap, all unmistakably his own. Still sharp at 77, Ambolley commands a tight ensemble through groove-led declarations like 'Wake Up Afrika' and 'U Like Or U No Like', riding swung basslines and crisp horn arrangements with the flair of a master bandleader. 'God E See You' finds him slipping into a smoky, Afro-soul register, while 'New Simi Rapp' stretches out into hypnotic territory, led by flutes, baritone sax and rhythmic mantras. 'Ochoko Bila' and 'If You Want To Know' are more playful cuts, full of bounce and quick-fire wisdom. The production, split between Ghana and the Netherlands, balances live grit with rich detail-everything breathes, nothing is wasted. As ever, Ambolley's voice is both storyteller and instrument: loose, commanding, and deeply rooted in diasporic sound. This is music that moves and means.

Review: The first recorded meeting of Pierre Bastien (compositeur Parisien) and Casper Van De Velde's (Belgian drummer known for his outings on Qeerecords) documents two days of lowkey live-performed regalia at Werkplaats Walter in Brussels. Set up by Blickwinkel, the residency saw Bastien's "miniature mechanical orchestras" - trumpets, motors, Meccano arms, all of which make up the former artist's trademark live machinic draw - click into orbit with Van De Velde's loose-limbed, textural percussion. Both artists work in detail and gesture before volume, moving gently but unpredictably, index finger tracing part-clockwork, part-creature pattern cuts.

Review: West Coast rapper Big Sean sharpened his pen and darkened his ink for his third album, trading in his bling for a thunderous storm-braving. Out through Good Music and Def Jam in early 2015, the LP, in true rap kingpin fashion, serves to simultaneously enlist and dagger-eye its own collaborators, including Drake, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne. With production from Key Wane, DJ Dahi, DJ Mustard and Kanye himself, the likes of 'Blessings', 'Win Some, Lose Some' and 'Stay Down' seem prescient for the time, when dark unison synths and tension-pluck progressions would parlay Sean's otherwise largely dry, un-effected vocals. Ten years on, Dark Sky Thinking feels like a personal reckoning for the rapper, scratching off the liquid latex gold to reveal a complicated character underneath.

Review: Elizabeth Madox Roberts' The Time Of Man (1926) is an episodic modern novel, tracing the life of Ellen Chesser, the daughter of poor white tenant farmers in rural Kentucky. Roberts treats the main character's movement through different landscapes and seasons waveringly, grappling with poverty, loss, love, and the push-pull between solitude and connection by way of a lytic narrative that shifts and resolves atemporally. Review: Detroit rap doyen Apollo Brown brings out Grandeur, which plays back like a victory lap and stress test rolled into one. With 19 tracks and a cast sprawling from M.O.P. to Chino XL to Evidence, it's pitched as his most expansive solo record to date, doing swell justice to the theme of personal magnificence. Review: Country and folk singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter is making up for lost time. Having left it five years between albums, the multi-Grammy winner is now onto her second album of 2025, having released a collaborative album, Looking for the Thread, back in January. Chapin's glistening oeuvre, which stretches back to her Steve Buckingham-produced debut in 1987, is bolstered significantly with this new offering, too. 'Bitter Ender', the first single, manages to sound intimate and widescreen at the same time: there's plenty of polish to make it a daytime radio hit, whilst never losing sight of the fact the Americana genre is principally about storytelling and she holds your attention throughout. Meanwhile, 'Home Is A Song' is more downtempo and strives off the beautiful interlocking of simple piano chords and intricate arpeggio guitar. The chorus harmonies are delightful and heartfelt. A solid entry by an all-time great of the genre.

Review: Under the Cicciolina alias, Ilona-Elana Anna Staller enjoyed an eclectic career that included spells modelling, making pornographic films, and representing her native country Hungary in Italy's national parliament. Crucially, during the mid-to-late 1980s she also made a string of albums with the assistance of producer Jayhorus. Avec-Toi was one of those sets, with the showcased music being recorded at some point around 1986-87. It's a joyously camp and at times verbally risque affair, with Staller singing and speaking over synth-heavy backing tracks that variously mine Italo-disco, formative Euro-dance, hi-NRG, European synth-pop and contemporaneous adult movie soundtracks for inspiration.

Review: This deep-digging compilation from Italian label Right Tempo offers a lovingly remastered sweep through jazz-inflected house from the decade between 1995 and 2005-a period where groove, musicianship and warmth reigned. The Daft Punk remix of I:Cube's 'Disco Cubizm' is an obvious highlight: clipped funk licks under elastic synths, reshaped with robotic swagger. The original mix rides smoother, more submerged. Josma's 'Voices Of Los Angeles' shimmers with Rhodes flourishes and disco flickers, while Mondo Grosso's 'Souffle H' (King Street Extended Club Mix) drives forward with crisp drums and brushed keys. Cricco Castelli's 'Life Is Changing' appears in two versions-both tightly arranged, with swung jazz-funk energy. Jo Boyer's 'Isabelle And The Rain', given a heady edit by Da Funkie Junkie & Cosmic Girl, closes the set with downtempo sparkle. Elegant, playable, and reissued with care.

Review: Agharta snares Miles Davis and his electric septet in full volcanic mode, recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall during a 1975 afternoon set. Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson, Al Foster, James Mtume, Reggie Lucas and the incendiary Pete Cosey conspire with Davis to pour molten funk, noise and free improvisation into a dense, swirling suite moulded across four untitled sections. Davis barely leads; rather, the ensemble pushes forward through locked, polyrhythmic surges, Cosey's snarling guitar and FX rig driving much of the intensity. Teo Macero oversaw the recording, though here there's little of his trademark splicing; the chaos is left intact. Though once derided, Agharta is now rightly recognised as the hellish high watermark of electric jazz that it is. This 50th anniversary edition is limited to 2000 copies on translucent blue vinyl.

Review: This is Eels' most immediately rewarding album Mark Oliver Everett, also known by his stage name E, was on miracle form: it's like some kind of divine intervention played a role in him being able to lay these stone cold bangers. Of the hits,'Souljacker (part 1)' is the most striking with its menacing, memorable riff that adds edge to any scene. Film buffs among us will know it from Wim Wenders' 'Twelve Miles To Trona' short film (2002) where it's a beautiful fit. Another highlight is the haunting 'Bus Stop Boxer', which is intense and emotionally charged in its depiction of the violence of loneliness. For 'Dog Faced Boy', it's been said that PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish wrote most of the music in Bristol and then E added lyrics and other embellishments when they were in LA together - few co-writes come out this well.

'The Sea' and 'Jeremiah' set the tone with sly melodies and gently wayward arrangements, while 'Bells of Every Chapel'-a duet with Billy Strings-waltzes between devotion and delirium. Review: Reissued now on blue eco-vinyl, Total Life Forever marked a sharp left turn for Foals when it landed in 2010. Swapping the frantic math-rock spikiness of Antidotes for a tone more expansive, the Oxford band leant into atmosphere, melody and melancholia, with 'Blue Blood' setting the tone - all restraint and slow build - and 'Black Gold' adding a widescreen, atolling drama. The LP was recorded in Gothenburg with producer Luke Smith (ex-Clor) and saw Foals consciously break away from the tight, jittery rhythms of their debut, Yannis Philippakis harder concaving the lyrical lens. This gave ultimate rise to 'Spanish Sahara', seven minutes of glacial synths, grief and catharsis, with popular consensus determining it their defining track.

Review: London-based keyboard player, composer, bandleader and DJ Greg Foat is a musician completely of his time and somehow beyoGreg Foat trades in his go-to instrumental versions for a narrative-led, spiritual concept record, teaming up with singer Forest Law on a space-crafted mission, orbiting the life and work of Isle Of Wight painter and surfer Dave Gray. It's the first time Foat has built an album entirely around a vocalist, and Forest Law leans into an abstract, painterly mode, channeling early Peter Gabriel and David Sylvian with lyrics full of oblique references to ocean rhythms and coastal philosophy. Review: The cult Kraut/psych/folk/drone outfit France, celebrated for crafting sound that transcends typical genre constraints with atmospheric richness, make an unprecedented leap in their latest release. Teaming up with French underground group Standard In-Fi and Belgian label a1000p, the band embraces an unconventional approach to both performance and recording. The idea was born from a chance encounter between the band and Mim, the sound engineer behind a1000p, who proposed bringing his studio gear directly to a live show. After a failed attempt at a traditional studio session, they settled on something more radical: recording live in an open-air amphitheatre in the French countryside. In 2022, Mim partnered with the Rituale Festival to make the dream a reality, arranging a concert at St. Roman de Codieres, near his vineyards. With the amphitheatre nestled in a valley, Mim meticulously set up his equipment, deploying an array of mics to capture both the immediate and distant sounds of the performance. The resulting sound is nothing short of remarkableian enveloping blend of rawness and finely tuned acoustics with the recording process, intricate and expansive, ensuring every subtle detail of the band's sonic journey is preserved. Whether it's the swirling folk melodies or the layered drones and psych flourishes, the mix elevates their sound to new heights here.

Review: Los Angeles-based psych-garage rockers Frankie & the Witch Fingers are one of the most thrillingly frantic bands since the Dead Kennedys and are on red hot form with this their eight studio album - yep, not a bad return considering that they only formed in 2013. 'TV Baby' is like a more frantic Ty Segall circa his Emotional Mugger album; 'Dead Silence' weaves between amphetamine-fuelled glam-tinged punk and transcendent psych rock whig outs. It's as if the band have not left any significant neo psych album of the past 15 years slip their net and plucked the best bits, whilst injecting plenty of their own eccentricities. It's a glorious racket and cacophonous enough and fun enough to positively disrupt any room you crank it up in.

Built on eight staves of repeating melodic patterns, the piece allows musicians to freely choose and switch parts at specific cues, which results in striking shifts in instrumentation. Review: In today's all-go culture, quitting is frowned upon. Ironically, the new 15-track rock-leaning album from Haim, produced by Danielle Haim and Rostam Batmanglij, hardly hears so much a scrap of towel thrown in. It follows a reconvening by the trio in early 2023, and a nudging hint via social media at an upcoming Jai Paul collab. Alana Haim described this record as "the closest (they) have ever gotten to how (they) wanted to sound," marking a notable shift from their previous work. Paul Thomas Anderson returns to shoot the album cover, continuing his creative partnership with the band after Alana starred in his most seventies teen drama Licorice Pizza.

Review: Brooklyn-based jangle pop-rock/shoegaze sorts Hotline TNT's third album is their most assured and sonically diverse offering yet. Anderson, previously of Vancouver duo Weed, recorded the two previous albums all himself but through more fortunate circumstances acquired four musicians who he's welcomed to be part of the process the whole way. Moreover, Wisconsin producer Amos Pitsch, who runs Crutch of Memory studio where they recorded, played a big role and this collective effort has yielded stellar results, marking this record out as one of the key albums of the new wave of American shoegaze, no matter how much the band probably bristle at the pigeonhole.

Review: Lyon musicologists Macadam Mambo allow The Jaffa Kid ampler extra space to flex their experimental side. Though prior releases by the artist have verged fuller in the direction of jungly, 'A Teq Approach' hears the artist abstract and remould their breaks and ambiances to delicious degree, mechanising but breathing new life into an otherwise mostly single-tempo approach. Off the back of an almost daily production output on Soundcloud comes this 12-track album, where gestalt breaks are heat-set, cast into all tempos; 'A Calm Momentum' recalls the best of Skee Mask after his move away from techno proper, while 'Different Text' brings a hermeneutic otherness, interpreting constellated skies of detuned arp-bliss and hoovering, soundscaped lows. A choice selection for fans of of AFX, ERP, Drexciya, u-Ziq or Luke Slater.

Review: Timing was everything with Japanese Breakfast's Grammy-nominated third album. Its healing, exuberant chamber pop sound - the manifestation of its creator Michelle Zauner's innermost feelings - came as glimmers of light and hope started to creep into her life and across society. Zauner's first two albums saw her embark on an artistic grieving process to help her come to terms with her mother's cancer diagnosis and eventual death. And the shoegaze and dream pop sounds apt reflections of that catharsis. This third album's contrasting feeling of renewal is epitomised on the song 'Paprika' and it's important to remember that when this album was first released, in mid-2021, much of the world was coming to its final stage of Covid-related lockdowns, paving the way for it to soundtrack new beginnings.

Review: French producer duo Dub Shepherds team up with Clermont-Ferrand vocalist Junior Roy for a nine-track set that follows the traditional showcase format: each vocal cut is paired with its dub. The A-side opens with 'Trodding On Jah Road' and 'Start a Revolution', both built on heavyweight rhythms and restrained instrumentation. Roy's delivery is clean and direct, rooted in 80s-style cadences without overplaying the retro angle. 'Fittest (Discomix)' stretches the format slightly, offering a longer vocal-to-dub transition. Side B begins with 'Problems' and its dub version, again prioritising balance over effects. 'Run' leans into a looser melodic structure, while the dub flips it into a more echo-driven space. The overall mix i handled by Jolly Joseph and Doctor Charty i keeps the low end upfront, but avoids excess. The dubs are labelled "Hardmix", though the approach stays disciplined: no over-saturated FX chains, just clean edits and steady pressure. A solid roots release from a studio clearly comfortable in its identity.

Review: The elusive De Frank Kakra remains a mystery, his real name unknown, and his current whereabouts unclear. But the music tells its own story: rooted in Ewe heritage, Kakra cut his teeth as a percussionist and backing vocalist in the fray of Ghana's 70s highlife scene, with stints with K. Frimpong's Cubano Fiestas and the Vis-A-Vis band. Eventually fronting his own groups, The Professionals and The Diggit Ways, he went on to record countless scintillating sides with labels across West Africa, and this new compilation brings together many of said wax etchings from Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast, handled with care by Michael Graves at Osiris Studio. It's the debut release from a label founded in gratitude to Kakra's music and the healing it sparked. Liner notes and archival sleuthing aim to piece together his story, and the hope is that someone, somewhere, might know what became of him.

Review: One of Bob Marley's most acclaimed LPs on reissue here, and it's an album that overflows with funk, poise, and defiant overtones. Marley recorded the album in 1977 after surviving an assassination attempt at his home in Jamaica. Following the attack, he left the country and relocated to London, and it's here that the collection was captured. At times a commentary on the political violence that blighted Jamaica during the era, other times joyful celebration, the music is some of the reggae icon's most potent. The hypnotic groove and chanted vocals of the title track are an obvious standout, as are the feel-good flex of 'Jammin' and the heartfelt vulnerability of 'Is This Love'. Presented as a double pack, all the music gets the groove spacing it so richly deserves.

Review: Formed during New Order's mid-90s hiatus, UK duo Monaco saw bassist Peter Hook and David Potts push Hook's signature bass-driven sound into unabashed pop territory. This expanded reissue revisits their 1997 debut, which hit number eleven on the UK charts and features the single 'What Do You Want From Me?'-a track so reminiscent of New Order it was frequently mistaken for one. Elsewhere, 'Shine' and 'Sweet Lips' channel jangly optimism through punchy synths and glam-flecked choruses, while deeper cuts like 'Blue' and 'Sedona' explore moodier, more textured arrangements. Review: Back after a three-year break, NuNorthern Soul's Summer Selections 2025 marks the fifth instalment in the label's beloved Balearic series, which has evolved over the years as an alloying of Ibiza-ready sounds from beachfront occupiers new and old. Manu Archeo opens the set with a slomo rework of Nightdubbing's self-titled cut, while George Koutalieries follows with 'Seasons', a wordless guided medication set upon a golden-hour fade. Label newcomer James E Burton dials up the texture with roomy live drums and suitably blear-ic pads (there's still sleep in your eye).
