Review: As part of Amniote Editions' fifth birthday, the admirably experimental label has decided to release a full-length excursion from Mirror Zone founder Spekki Webu, AKA Heliobolus. The multi-disciplinary artist has decided to utilise both aliases on the album, a way of reinforcing the key conceptual idea behind it - that it is a "story of intertwined storylines" akin to "parallel universes that connect and diverge". Musically, it's an intriguing affair, with pulsating, full-throttle sci-fi techno workouts sitting side by side with darker, more intense cuts, sound design-heavy experimental techno soundscapes, and nods towards the horror end of the cinematic soundtrack spectrum. Throw in a few mutant, noise-laden post-IDM compositions and you have a genuinely impressive full-length excursion.

Review: Affin Records label head and long-time techno maker and sound designer Joachim Spieth is back with a new album project called Retrace. It is one that finds him blending dub with ambient electronics into seven "complex, aqueous soundscapes" packed with great textures and crystalised melodies. Opener 'Recall' sets a fine tone for the record then 'Shine' sinks into hazy and lo-fi static-laced tundras, 'Longing' is delicious dub techno from the bottom of the ocean and 'Drain' follows suit but with a little more propulsion. Many more such tracks follow on what is an intriguing album full of evocative narratives and heady pads.

Review: A cross-hemispheric exchange gave rise to Nocturna, the first collaboration between New Zealand composer Andrew Thomas and German sound artist Joachim Spieth - the former's first for Affin after long-held stints Kompakt. Beginning with Thomas's piano sketches, composed during a Southern Hemisphere summer, the material was passed to Spieth just as light returned to the North. A subtle transformation ensued; Spieth preserved the piano's fragile warmth as its edges came sculpted across ambient textures and restrained sound design. A peek-a-boo of presence and absence is scripted, where each decision to withhold a note feels as resonant as those included. Clipped reverb gargantuans contrast to crystal clear piano scales on our favourites, 'Lumina' and 'Amethyst'.

Review: Long-time European techno innovator Joachim Spieth has hooked up with Agustin Mena aka Warmth for a debut collaborative album that blends their shared love for expansive soundscapes and atmospheric compositions. Warmth is the Spanish ambient producer who is also behind the SVLBRD alias so these two know a thing or two about how to get the most out of their machines and so they prove here across an album of seven immersive tracks. They are rife with organic textures and evoke a sense of space and timeless longing, all with a gently persuasive sense of movement.

Review: Canadian progressive metalcore outfit Spiritbox have become one of the unlikely success stories of the past few years within the metal and hardcore spheres. With huge festival and touring slots and millions of streams, it's a wonder to think how far the members have come since their early days as part of the chaotic mathcore group iwrestledabearonce, with their increasing exposure contrasting greatly against their rhythmic and pummelling grooves as well as enigmatic frontwoman Courtney LaPlante's inhumane shrieks. Riding the rigid momentum of their 2021 debut full-length Perfect Blue into last year's Rotoscope EP, the band are set to capitalise on the now with another bombastic, vicious and succinct statement of intent with The Fear Of Fear. Six new tracks of technical heft and serene melodies, designed to keep the band at the centre of the metalcore conversation while LP2 slowly brews.

Review: It's hard not to feel that the first time you heard Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space it was a lightbulb moment - one of those life, or at least music-affirming experiences that's hard to come back from. Not the first Spiritualized album, but certainly the most critically acclaimed at the time, and arguably still to this day, it confirmed the Warwickshire band had arrived at the highest level of chart-friendly artistry. That point when a band realise they can do what they want, and it resonates with both niche and mainstream ears. Everything Was Beautiful arrived 25 years later, and emphasised that point. Yes, we're talking about a group that reached full maturity some time ago, rather than a troupe of rising enigmas pushing rock 'n' roll in new directions. Nevertheless, the way in which we are invited back into their world is captivating. Tracks that rouse, inspire, and feel utterly timeless. As a record, this is an exhilarating ride from start to finish, almost seeming to distill all that has come before into one intoxicating brew. Here in a limited Spanish pressing, grab it while you can.

Review: Compiling the complete works of Splat! onto one CD has been desired by their fans for years now. Finally, this British post-punk band that defined the genre's chaotic, off-kilter spirit is now complete to one special. Formed between Nottingham and Derby, Splat! was a blend of misfits influenced by The Pop Group, PiL, The Fall and The Birthday Party, with quirky musical tastes that spanned from punk to jazz, noise rock, and obscure prog. The compilation features 19 tracks, including their first 7" single and a 12" EP, along with unreleased material, capturing the band's raw energy and absurdist charm. Splat! were known for their anarchic live performances, often involving blood, sweat and tears. Their debut single, released in 1983 on Ron Johnson Records, sold out quickly, and the follow-up EP in 1984 continued their DIY ethos. Despite critical praise and a John Peel session, the band's inability to self-promote led to their breakup. However, the compilation brings their best moments together for the first time on CD. And Yeah So encapsulates the band's unique blend of messy, high-octane punk and absurdist humor, offering listeners a deeply authentic look at an era of post-punk energy and anti-commercialism.

Review: The 20th-anniversary edition of Squarepusher's Ultravisitor showcases Tom Jenkinson's groundbreaking blend of live and studio recordings, remastered for new depths of sound. Spanning frenetic breakbeats, jazz-funk explorations and atmospheric fusion, this album captures the complexity and eclecticism of Jenkinson's work. Tracks like 'Iambic 9 Poetry' deliver sunlit jazz tones, while 'Tommib Help Buss' brings serene electronic bliss. Although Ultravisitor might feel overlong at nearly 80 minutes, its sprawling length doesn't diminish its innovation. The title track encapsulates Squarepusher's signature drum-n-electro-pop, while pieces like 'Circlewave' and 'I Fulcrum' balance virtuosity with thematic exploration. Jenkinson's improvisational drumming and bass solos, such as on 'I Fulcrum', demonstrate his command over both instruments and composition. Jenkinson's eccentricity shines through, making Ultravisitor an essential listen for both long-time fans and newcomers. This edition reaffirms Squarepusher's pioneering role in electronic music, blending technical brilliance with intriguing, if at times chaotic, compositions. Review: British pianist Charlie Stacey's first solo project comes in the form of a one-take direct-to-disc live recording of his improvisational genre-bending sound. The Charlie Stacey regulars are present on drums, bass and trumpet, though this time vocals are courtesy of Vula Malinga of Basement Jaxx fame. The opener 'Dawn Chorus' is a 'Legend of Zelda'-esque gentle key ballad, that blends into the mellow jazz 'Music is Healing' where the brass of Jay Phelps is on full display before giving way to a free for all acid jazz race to the finish on the tail end. A sure favourite for many will be the 10-minute epic 'Rivers of Gondor' - based on the worlds of Tolkien of course - and its twisting, experimental composition.
