Review: Five years is a long time to go without an album in anyone's books, but it's also one of those reassuringly long hiatuses that betrays the ethics of the artists. Not compelled to buy their way into the 21st Century's rather abhorrent demand for constant stimulation simply to keep the likes, clicks and followers up, instead the outfits that take half a decade to gather themselves usually have something to say that's worth listening, and the instrumentals to back that up. There's A Big Star Outside is no exception to that rule we just made up. It soars, it swoons, it romances and it commiserates through a tapestry of artsy space rock, baroque pop, pseudo-shoe gaze, 1980s synth, and rousing indie. It tells stories, paints pictures, captivates emotions and speaks to heart and mind in one fell swoop. Or, to put all that another way, Swim Deep's latest might be their greatest.

Review: Sylvester's Live At The Opera House is a monumental release capturing a pivotal moment in his career, celebrated with unrivalled splendour. Recorded in 1979 at San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House, this first-ever complete release of the concert showcases Sylvester's commanding stage presence and profound musicality. Backed by a 26-piece orchestra, the performance unfolds over 13 unedited tracks, including the mid-show ceremony where he received the key to San Francisco, a poignant tribute during a tumultuous time for the city's LGBTQ+ community. From the electrifying opener to his iconic hits like 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' and 'Dance (Disco Heat),' Sylvester delivers a transcendent blend of disco, soul, and pop, amplified by the impassioned vocals of Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes Armstead, known as Two Tons o' Fun. The setlist spans from soulful ballads to exhilarating dance anthems, each moment infused with Sylvester's signature blend of glamour and vulnerability. Joshua Gamson's liner notes enrich the experience, offering historical context and personal insights into Sylvester's legacy. Review: For deep house diggers, Soichi Terada has long been a source of inspiration. While he's still active, it's the early '90s material he released on the Far East Recordings label - an imprint he founded soon after his graduation in 1990 - that most excites. Following the 2014 re-release of his sublime hook-up with Nami Shimada, "Sunshower", Rush Hour has decided to put together this excellent retrospective. Compiled by self-confessed fan Hunee, Sounds From The Far East contains a mixture of hard-to-find Terada originals, collaborations, and tracks by fellow Far East Recordings artist Shinichiro Yokota, all in the label's trademark melody-rich, evocative deep house style.
