Sentimental Moments (10:58)
Vida Mia (8:17)
Oh Yeah T'blessed (20:51)
Review: Building on the momentum of their debut album, the legendary musicians and 577 mainstays return with Shine Hear, Vol. 2, a stunning continuation of their avant-garde exploration. Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter, pianist Leo Genovese, bassist William Parkeriwho also contributes on Gralla and Shakuhachiiand drummer and vocalist Francisco Mela, reunite to create another cosmic journey through sound. This second volume maintains the same spirit of improvisational brilliance while pushing the boundaries even further. Drawing from classic jazz structures, the ensemble weaves in modern experimentalism and a broad palette of instruments, resulting in an album that feels both timeless and innovative. The tracks and the album title are inspired by a new poem written by Carter, reflecting the transience and ceaseless motion of modern life, much like the city of New York, where all the musicians are based. This collaboration has unique magic can emerge when these legendary artists come together. Their interplay blends elegant, traditional jazz with daring, avant-garde arrangements. Shine Hear, Vol. 2 stands as a powerful and innovative work, affirming the quartet's ability to continually reinvent themselves while honouring the roots of jazz.

Review: Flammer Dance Band returns with 'Gynger', a high-energy, groove-infused album that showcases their vibrant fusion of funk, Afrobeat and psychedelic sounds. After a whirlwind year of touring, including a stint backing Ghanaian legend Funky Rob, the seven-piece group hit the studio with fresh inspiration and contagious spontaneity. Over five intense days, they recorded Gynger, an album brimming with dynamic, raw energy. Highlights include,'Bandet Gar', which is a horn-heavy funk powerhouse, bursting with infectious rhythms. 'Ekko Av Deg Selv' takes a more experimental route, with its distinctive keyboard work lending the track a unique and eclectic vibe. 'Glad' delivers a laid-back, Balearic flavour, with breezy guitar riffs and a relaxed island groove, offering a refreshing, chilled-out contrast. Meanwhile, the title track, 'Gynger', dives into trippy, psychedelic territory, swirling with hypnotic rhythms and spaced-out vibes that pull listeners deep into the groove. This release sees a band at the peak of their creativity, blending tight musicianship with a free-flowing, jam-like spirit. Flammer Dance Band's is clearly a leader in funk and Afrobeat, offering this fresh take on classic grooves with modern twists.

Dedos (Fingers) (3:42)
Doce Y Diez (3:10)
Review: This is a real lost South American Latin Jazz-Funk treasure from Argentina taken from some original 1974 recordings led by Carlos Franzetti. Known for his late 70s jazz-fusion album Graffiti, Franzetti recorded Dedos after returning to Argentina from Mexico where he was musical director at Fermata International. His friend Mochin Marafiotti, A&R at Music Hall, proposed the Latin Jazz project and the session featured Ruben Rada, Ricardo Lew, Emilio Valle, Osvaldo Lopez and Franzetti himself. Though initially overlooked, Dedos and Doce y Diez now receive a long-overdue reissue as they remain high on energy and deeply jazz gems with a Latin twist.

Review: Soul and jazz meet head to head on this new LP from Hot Casa, to truly bring the two genres into their natural alignment. Hola Adisa Farrar is a vocalist who hails from California via Jamaican roots, while Florian Pellissier brings though his Parisian jazz stronghold, and the pair lay down some unmissable Dingwalls-reminiscent gems. In fact, this is the perfect sort of album for those diggers looking for that perfect jazz-funk record, the one that slipped away; the drumming across all of the tracks is hypnotic but changes enough to retain that mysticism, the pianos glide over the melodies in a delicate but playful way, and Farrar's vocals are an utter beauty spilled all over the rhythm. A must have, and a warmly recommended album. Supported by Mukatsuku.

Review: Human novae of the 1950s jazz circuit in Hollywood, Curtis Amy and Frank Butler imploded the local scene at the turn of the swinging decade when they began to record for local label Pacific Jazz. Laid down in a single session at the PJ studio, Groovin' Blue is a timeless and idiosyncratic experiment in jazz, its specialty being tss-tss rhythms, unhindered lead instrumental melisma, sax counterpoint, and smackout drum fills and solos from Butler, which more than transcended the strictures of the swing form of the time. Also hearing vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, who was just 19 years old at the time of this recording, this excellent six-song set is perfect for those audiophiles keen on the interesting intersection of blues and jazz.

Review: The Blue Land is Matthieu Bordenave's follow-up to his ECM trio debut and sees the addition of British drummer James Maddren, enhancing the ensemble's airy textural canvas with a more urgent, animated feel. Pianist Florian Weber's improvisations set the tone, displaying inventive tension and release. Bordenave's saxophone weaves a lyrical narrative, punctuated by bassist Moret and Maddren's perceptively timed contributions. The album strikes a delicate balance between tonal and abstract elements, as heard on the ominous title track and the meditative 'Cyrus.' With nods to Coltrane's 'Compassion"'and Jarrett-like piano, the ensemble delivers an intriguing and collectively expressive set of chamber ensemble pieces.

He was just 24 years old in 1978 when he recorded his debut album Umbra with an ensemble of 18 different sidemen. It has since become something of a collector's piece and now gets its first ever worldwide reissue after first being released on a private label. The fantastic jazz fusion sounds have been transferred directly from master tapes so sound superb. It's a soothing, mellifluous album that has aged to perfection with piano jams like 'Tn' next to funky workouts like 'Womanized.'

Review: Craft Recordings get back on their curatorially expert business with this serious new reissue from Fania All Stars, the long out-of-print Latin-Soul-Rock. This eight-track gem from the 70s salsa ultragroup (literally; FAS consisted of over 25 members at the height of its fame), released via their own label in 1974, documents the moment at which over 40,000 salsa punters visited New York's Yankee Stadium to catch a glimpse of their talents, alongside a myriad of other Latin greats. Fania All Stars threw a curveball, however, by not only playing pure salsa but blending it with styles like funk and soul, thus sticking out from the crowd and adding a spicier punch. We welcome this record, out via Craft Latino, with alacrity, as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of this 'wow' moment, which deserves to be documented even if solely for its powers of FAS' fusional imagination.

Review: Three Trumpets was recorded in 1957 and released on the New Jazz label. It features the Prestige All Stars led by revered trumpeters Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, and Idrees Sulieman and supported by a solid rhythm section of pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Ed Thigpen. This sublime album includes five original compositions, one each by Farmer, Byrd, and O'Brien, and two by Sulieman. While none of the tracks became hits in their own right and with 'Palm Court Alley' being a blues delight, they all offer up dynamic performances and impressive interplay among the brass musicians.

All 14 of these cuts are soul-drenched and jazz instrumentals steeped in funk and hip-hop traditions and they were all made live and in the moment with no overdubs after the event. That lends the record a lived-in and authentic energy as it veers into Afro-tinged sounds like 'Affrentic,' straight-ahead soul-jazz cuts like 'Sticky Beets' and the compelling 'Slick.'

FBI (which supposedly stood for Funky Bands Inc., or so those investigative bureaucrats would like to claim) allegedly consisted of such false identities as Herscel Holder, Lloyd Smith, Lennox Meade and Raffi Pereira, and - in a startling move of the establishment co-opting counterculture into its own milieu - has its lead track decry the FBI. "You can't hide, so stop your supercoolin' groove, baby," urge the undercover feds. We don't buy it, FBI, but perhaps you will!

He recorded this album sometime in the mid-1970s in support of the revolutionary leader of Benin at the time - Mathieu Kerekou. A fire is reported to have turned all but 200 copies to dust so it is mega rare and expensive to get an original. Acid Jazz reissues it here in all its fiery, lo-fi, gnarly Afrobeat glory. This is a fully licensed project with all new and in-depth sleeve notes by Florent Mazzoleni.

Review: By the time he recorded "Brazilian Dorian Dream" in 1976, Brazilian composer, musician, producer and bandleader Manfedo Fest had already worked on countless bossa-nova, samba and jazz albums, both in the United States and his native Brazil. Yet the album, which Far Out has now reissued, is like nothing else he recorded before or after - and not just because it was based on "the principle of the modal diatonic scales of the Dorian mode". Musically, it's deliciously vibrant and colourful, combining elements of his native Brazilian samba and bossa-nova with Azymuth style jazz-funk, American jazz-fusion, and futuristic, then cutting edge synthesizer sounds. Above all, though, the album strikes a near perfect balance between funkiness and the sweet sunniness that defines some of the greatest Brazilian music.

Review: Fire! (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin) is the eighth free improvisation opus by the Swedish experimental jazz group. In just a short space of five through-composed sonic reality tests, the album reads and plays back like a forty-minute affirmative exercise in shadow work, in which the deepest depths of a collective subject's unconscious mind(s) is explored and recalibrated. The approach matches: unlike prior projects, the album was performed and recorded live in the studio to analogue tape, with no flutes, no electronics, no guests and no extras. Contemporary jazz in its purest compositional nakedness, Fire! finds joy and reverence in the crude and the fetishised, with each instrument unfurling over time like Platonic forms of their truly nude, phenomenological counterparts.

Though never a mainstream star, Fisher's legacy has grown through the years, thanks to DJs and crate diggers who uncovered his unique blend of boogie, jazz and funk. There are some essential soulful standards included in this set such as 'A Night In Tunisia' and 'Cry Me A River', while the title track is a sprightly burst of swinging sunshine typical of the early bebop period. Faithfully transferred from analogue tapes and pressed to heavyweight vinyl, this is a fine document of Fitzgerald's immense talent and natural charisma in its rawest form.

Just a year later, the enduring jazz icons hooked up once more on Verve Records for the simply titled Ella and Louis Again. It was recorded at Radio Recorders and Capitol Studios in Hollywood and where their first album was all duets, this one features seven solo vocal tracks by either Armstrong or Fitzgerald amongst its dozen duet tracks. Louis only played trumpet on six of these tunes but there was such a vibe between the two artists that it was never seen as an issue.

As you would expect from those two artists, it is a boundary-pushing journey through sound that is rooted in improvisation, classical training and deep electronic exploration. The album fuses jazz, acid house, breakbeatand cosmic textures into a seamless exploration that adds up to a sonic constellation-carefully composed, yet full of spontaneity. 'Binary Star' is like IDM, minimal and electro all distilled into a siren new sound, 'Orion Belt' is rich in pixel thin pads and glinting chords and 'Phaser' is a slithering, high speed electro workout from another world and with a playful charm despite its highbrow design.

Many among you might not yet be aware of The Cats, a collaborative album recorded in synergy between Coltrane, guitarist Kenny Burrell, trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, and pianist Tommy Flanagan, but we wouldn't blame you, because this was one that flew under the radar on its New Jazz release in 1959. Not least, this might have been because it was released when Coltrane had moved onto more one-off release projects, shortly after his more widely publicized contract with Prestige Records ended. Nonetheless, it's cited as a deeply special album, resonant of the slinky sound of postwar New York jazz inasmuch as it is of the archetypal feline form.

Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

Review: UK supergroup Flock returns with their highly anticipated second album, Flock II. Featuring Bex Burch, Sarathy Korwar, Tamar Osborn, Danalogue and Al MacSween, this new record pushes creative boundaries with fresh tracks born from their magnificent collective spirit. Unlike their debut, Flock II was recorded over a week in 2022 in the serene Welsh countryside using inventive "jump-off" devices like shape-based diagrams and strobe effects to inspire each composition. Set in a converted country church, the resulting soundscapes are both intense and hypnotic as they weave together a personal journey through their most atmospheric sounds.

Review: Greg Foat returns with The Rituals of Infinity, an eclectic jazz album inspired by both iconic sci-fi literature and Greek mythology. Featuring legendary saxophonist Art Themen and trumpeter Trevor Walker, the album is a vibrant blend of cinematic atmospheres and rich jazz traditions. Tracks like 'A Private Cosmos' and 'The World of the Red Sun' nod to sci-fi classics, while 'Minerva's Owl' reflects on the Greek legend symbolising retrospective wisdom, beautifully closing the album. Foat's ensemble, including Natcyet Wakili's fluid drumming, Jasper Osbourne's bass, and Katherine Farnden's cor anglais, creates an expansive sound. Shawn Lee's eerie waterphone touches add to the album's atmospheric depth. Recorded with a thoughtful approach to both melody and theme, The Rituals of Infinity show Foat's compositional mastery and storytelling through music. The album is set to debut live at the Worthy Earth Festival in Hampshire, offering listeners a full listen into its sci-fi and mythological inspirations. It's a richly textured journey that combines jazz's improvisational spirit with otherworldly influences.

Review: Acclaimed pianist Greg Foat is a mainstay of the current UK jazz revival thanks to works on Jazzman and Athens of the North. He draws on soul and library music for his inspiration and serves up lush symphonies that are rich in detail, layer and emotion. This new album, which makes use of pedal steel for the first time, goes even more widescreen in its approach and includes powerfully uplifting tracks like "Anticipation" as well as more sensual and slower groovers and languid movers like "Island Life." It is the sound of an artist and composer at the very peak of his powers.

Review: Greg Foat is something of a musical polymath, with his various solo and collaborative albums touching on everything from spiritual jazz, library music and soundtrack sounds, to Balearic beats, jazz-funk and deep house. On Psychosynthesis, his first solo set for two years, he largely keeps things warm, chilled and dreamy, joining the dots between horizontal jazz-funk, exotica, Balearica, and sensuous sun-down sounds with the aid of a vast battery of analogue and modular synthesizers. The results are predictably impressive, with the album's many highlights including the spacey, slo-mo shuffle of 'Underwater Fantasy', the throbbing, Sun Palace-esque starry jazz-funk of 'Psychosynthesis (Part 1)', the gaseous ambient drift of 'The Green Odyssey' and the Wally Badarou style warmth of 'The Investigation'.

Review: Greg Foat's The Glass Frog, released on Blue Crystal Records, is a sublime blend of smooth jazz and spacey, euphoric atmospheres. Foat shines as the lead at times, while the band complements him perfectly, setting a relaxing mood throughout the album. Highlights include 'Sea Of Tranquility,' a moody horn lullaby that embodies space jazz at its finest. 'Foals Of Epona' features a soothing jazz band with a funky drummer, creating a delightful groove. 'Clusters' brings a nostalgic 60s jazz ambiance, enveloping listeners in its rich soundscape. The standout track, 'My Love Has Green Eyes,' showcases magnificent sax work with beautiful keys, enhancing the band's intricate mixture. The Glass Frog is a fantastic album for both casual and hardcore jazz fans, offering a perfect blend of smooth, funky, and atmospheric jazz elements. Greg continues to impress.

Having recently collaborated with Aleksi Heinola and Teemu Akerblom for Gone To The Cats, Foat now teams up with Eero Koivistoinen on tenor sax for a decidedly smooth ride which brings out the best in both players. It features two brand-new compositions and two reimagined versions of tracks from their previous album, Dolphin. It was recorded at the namesake Fish Factory Studios in London with Moses Boyd on drums and Tom Herbert on bass. The four pieces are lavish and expansive with free-flowing sax melodies and tingling keys that bring to mind sun reflecting off glistering Mediterranean waters. It's an interesting and unusual collection from Folk Magic Band which was made up of 18 different members. They had their own alt set up in a Rome studio and were inspired by the free jazz movement of the day. As such there are pan-ethnic motifs next to the spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders and the wild orchestrations of Sun Ra and his Arkestra. It's intense and hard hitting in its quest to explore new musical ground.

Review: Claude Fontaine's latest album, La Mer, transports listeners to an idyllic, mythical island envisioned by the artist, situated off the coast of France, a fantasy realm graced with a blend of French and Portuguese influences, fragrant air and Lapis Lazuli-coloured waters. The stone citadels of this timeless place house people living in a velvet eternity. Fontaine's music is the soundtrack to this utopian paradise, merging 60s French ye-ye pop, slinky Studio One reggae, and Brazilian tropicalia into a seamless fusion. The album's first single, 'Vaqueiro,' tells the story of a rugged gaucho who grapples with love and solitude on a remote ranch. Fontaine's voice, reminiscent of Jane Birkin and Francoise Hardy, intertwines with lush instrumentals to create a wonderful atmosphere. Produced and co-written by Grammy-winner Lester Mendez, known for his work with Grace Jones and Shakira, the album boasts an impressive roster of musicians. Guitarist Tony Chin, bassist Ronnie McQueen of Steel Pulse, and percussionist Gibi Dos Santos from Sergio Mendes' ensemble, among others, contribute to the album's rich, textured sound. Ziggy Marley's drummer, Rock Deadrick, adds further rhythmic depth. La Mer is Fontaine's ambitious follow-up to her self-titled debut, promising a romantic collection of songs that blend diverse musical traditions into a dreamy, interconnected world.

Foster was a master collaborator who worked with everyone from George Benson to the Jacksons to Stevie Wonder (an in fact played the keys on Songs In The Key Of Life.) It is a vibrant seton tunes with five originals as well as covers of the likes of Al Green. Kevin Gray has mastered it from the original tapes and it has been pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Review: Fourplay's eighth album, their first for RCA/Bluebird, highlights the band's remarkable consistency in composition and musicianship. The quartetiLarry Carlton, Nathan East, Bob James and Harvey Masonideliver a distinctive sound across the album, from the exotic flair of 'Galaxia' to the smooth, radio-friendly groove of 'That's The Time.' Tracks like 'Break It Out' and 'Rollin'' showcase the band's tight rhythms and surprising twists, while 'Let's Make Love' stands out for Nathan East's powerful vocals. Although the album experiments with new directions, including the emotionally resonant title track and the urban funk of 'Cafe L'Amour,' it has the memorable melodies of earlier hits like '101 Eastbound' or 'Chant.' Fourplay's improvisational skill and musical versatility remain front and centre.

Review: What drives Amaro Freitas in life is experience. In 2020 the pianist, who hails from the Northeastern Brazilian coastal city of Recife, was drawn to Manaus, located in the Amazon basin, some 4600 kilometers to the west. His experience in that lush wilderness led him into a new realm of musical creation, one rooted in magic and possibility and tempered by a sense of stewardship for the earth's bounties and a connection to the Satere Mawe indigenous community. Crucial to the experience for Freitas was the maintenance of a true exchange of knowledge. According to Freitas, in the resulting album, Y'Y (pronounced: eey-eh, eey-eh), he pays "homage to the forest, especially the Amazon Forest, and the rivers of Northern Brazil: a call to live, feel, respect, and care for nature, recognizing it as our ancestor." This album is an artful conversation between its traditions, rooted in the unique sounds and rituals found in Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous cultures. With Y'Y, Freitas further codifies his fresh, 'decolonized' interpretation of Brazilian jazz, one that may well shatter preconceived notions of what jazz can be.

The album combines Frisell's trio with the Brussels Philharmonic and the Umbria Jazz Orchestra, resulting in a dynamic interplay between jazz intimacy and orchestral grandeur. Gibbs' masterful orchestrations, inspired by Gil Evans and cinematic scores, seamlessly enhance the trio's telepathic rapport. Frisell's signature shimmering sound blends effortlessly with strings and brass, creating a rich and expressive tapestry. Notably, the collaboration highlights the deep connection between Frisell and Gibbs, a legendary innovator in jazz arranging. Gibbs' intuitive writing draws out the trio's spontaneity and pushes them into uncharted territory. Frisell and Gibbs' mutual admiration and influence create a palpable energy throughout the album, showcasing the transformative power of collaboration.

Their much anticipated album features a rare and captivating blend of instruments including things such as electric guitar, pipe organ, and drums and therefore offers a fresh sound across 11 new cuts. Review: Despite eventually becoming one of Japanese jazz's most lauded pianists, Ryo Fukui didn't release many albums in his lifetime. Aside from Scenery, the dazzling 1976 debut of his Sapporo-based trio, none are quite as celebrated as In New York. Recorded with the help of sidemen Lisle A Atkinson (bass) and Leroy Williams (drums) at the Avatar studio in NYC in February 1999, it sees Fukui deliver dazzling, piano-driven interpretations of some of his jazz favourites (Charlie Parker's 'Hot House', Duke Ellington's 'Red Carpet' and George Gershwin's 'Embraceable You' included). Fukui's self-taught piano skills were incredible, no doubt, and it's the expressiveness and fluidity of his playing that shines through. It's perhaps fitting, though, that the album's standout moment is a version of his own 'Mellow Dream', arguably Fukui's most celebrated composition.

Building upon previous album Scenery's foundation, Fukui delves deeper into modal, bop, and cool jazz realms with refined elegance. Mellow Dream ventures into mellower, soulful, and contemplative territories, epitomised by the Bill Evans-esque title cut 'My Foolish Heart' yet it retains Fukui's trademark vigour, showcased in the explosive jam 'Baron Potato Blues' and the monumental 'Horizon,' featuring exhilarating solos from each trio member. Fukui's second album, then, effortlessly traverses melancholy to vibrant joy, showing off in the process his rare blend of talent, personal style, and disciplined approach.

Produced by Claude Delcloo, it has echoes of Pharaoh Sanders and politically-engaged French poetry (most of which was inspired by US poet Bob Kaufman) over next-level drumming. They all went their separate ways as a result and left behind this holy grail which is now available to all once more.

Review: Man With A Gun is the debut long player from Singaporean prog and funk group Funkgus. It has a famously enigmatic toxic blue jacket that lurks you in and musically it is no less intriguing. As well as a passionate cover of King Curtis's 'Memphis Soul Stew' there are plenty of supremely psychedelic sounds. The opener is steeped in funky bass riffs with rock-tinged drum breaks and plenty of raw vocals and from there the grooves come thick and fast, often with plenty of texture and charismatic vocals such as on 'Spill The Wine' and the leggy, expressive sounds of 'Everyday People' with its twisted wah wah guitars.

They join forces on the former's M Plant label for this superb collision of musical worlds. It is unified by Afro beats and a unique mix of futuristic ideals with Femi's improvised jazz sax leading the way over Hood's cosmic synth sounds. Review: We all know Italians do it better, but did you also know they seem to have the very best library reissues on the planet? Here the legendary singer and vocalist Nora Orlandi joins iconic jazz drummer Franco Tonani for a masterpiece of 1960s-early-1970s production that really encapsulates the ambience of a bygone age which feels dreamlike today. Fittingly, much of the music similarly invokes a sense of surrealism and psychedelia. You can almost feel yourself descending into the depths of a strange and beguiling night filled with weird and wonderful characters as these arrangements play out with pin point precision. A trip to another era, but also a trip into the mind's eye and all that may live there. Exquisite, masterful, but most of all utterly inimitable and difficult to countenance.

Review: Recorded during a 2002 studio session that followed a performance at the Vision Festival in New York City, the album features drummer Ali alongside saxophonist Frank Lowe and emerging talents Jumaane Smith (trumpet), Andrew Bemkey (piano) and Joris Teepe (bass). It's a dynamic ensemble bridges generations, blending seasoned mastery with youthful energy through fiery improvisations and moments of profound unity. Ali's pioneering style, rooted in multidirectional rhythms and polytonal percussion, reshaped jazz drumming by liberating the drummer from a purely time-keeping role. His intuitive interplay with the music, both rhythmically and melodically, made him an equal voice in the ensemble's harmonic creation. This approach resonates throughout the album, where cascading trumpet solos and intricate piano harmonies are tethered by a vibrant bass and Ali's commanding percussion. Tracks like the soaring opener and introspective interludes demonstrate the group's ability to shift seamlessly from bold, expressive improvisation to passages of collective breathing. Originally mixed and mastered by Ali, the recordings were shelved after his untimely passing and are now released by Survival Records in a beautifully restored LP, complete with recollections from Teepe.
