Game Matters (remix - instrumental) (3:09)
Review: Ill Adrenaline Records ups the ante once again with this fiery new offering from Awon and Elements. They combine to timeless effect on the first tune, 'Game Matters' which has classic ear boom bap drums with lots of extra details from DJ scratches to lush melodies and stirring backing vocals. It's a richly layered tune then 'Paper Off My Pager' gets more deep, with dusty drum work and closely mic bars next to sultry sax that drifts in and out. The first remix of 'Game Matters' slows it down and turns up the stoner vibes, then an instrumental strips out the vocal for pure beat goodness.

Andre 3000 - "Roses" (Kero instrumental)
Review: Brand new remixes by Kero One of three classic tracks from Common, Erykah Badu, and Andre 3000. The remixed tracks are dance
floor friendly but maintain that jazzy, feel good funky soul that Kero One is known for. The EP includes 5 tracks with plenty of live
instrumentation (Fender Rhodes, Fender Bass, Jazz guitar, vintage synths, etc.). Concept: Common, Erykah, and Andre of Outkast
all shared the same passion, the passion to make good music. Additionally, Common and Andre 3000 shared something else in common:
Erykah Badu. They did however have differences, as their romantic relationships with each other didn't last long. Kero One attempts to
sort out the differences, bringing them together for one last time to shine on the same record, 'The Love Triangle EP', out on Plug.

Excel - "Had To Shut You Down" (4:08)
Review: Private Stock Records is slowly but surely building up a golden catalogue of funk magic. This fourth EP is another high-class double dose that opens with Cutso's 'Fallen Love (Woo Woo)', a swirling slow burner of a tune with heavy, languid drums and twisted vocal samples that eventually coalesce into a warming party vibe. Excel's 'Had To Shut You Down' is a glorious soul gem with lush Philly strings and ornamental arrangements that raise your spirits and elevate your mood with its seductive grooves, not to mention a classic r&b vocal sample.

Review: Dragon Fli Empire's DJ Cosm is back one again with more of his stripped back boom bap rhythms. Over the top of his blistering beat work are battle-hardened veterans Sadat X, El Da Sensei and Prince Po, who muse on what it takes to be a killer MC, with plenty of scratching layered in for extra vitality. On the flip, Beats House head honcho Djar One serves up a standout remix that swings low and bristles with energy. The result is a Tribe type beat that cuts deep and closes out a limited edition 7" in essential style on either black or purple wax.

Review: DJ Yoda is a pioneering turntables, scratch DJ and hip-hop master who has defined all those scenes for more than 20 years. For this one though he leaves behind his high energy sounds for a much more mature and grown up beat with Edo.G and Nubya Garcia. 'Roxbury' is a smooth bit of deep cut boombap with gently tumbling toms and smooth flows from Edo.G. The icing on the cake is the dreamy sax work from new school star Nubya Garci. As well as the original, an instrumental is included on the flip. Both sides of this one hit different. Must cop.

Review: Hip-hop legend E-40 introduces his forthcoming album 'My Ghetto Report Card' with the release of the single 'U & Dat' on October 23rd. 'My Ghetto Report Card', his first via Reprise, follows on October 30th. 'U & Dat' is a pounding and hook-laden track that captures the hyphy sound and features guest appearances courtesy of T Pain and Kandi Girl. The single is the first to be taken from the 'My Ghetto Report Card' set that has already found stateside success by peaking at #3 on the Billboard charts. E-40 collaborated with a variety of production talent throughout 'My Ghetto Report Card' with Lil Jon, head of BME Recordings, acting as executive producer. Rick Rock (Xzibit, Method Man), Bosko (Kanye West), Studio Ton and E-40's son Droop-E (of The Pharmaceuticals) also contributed to the album. "I like to put a new twist on what I do", commented E-40. "Every now and then you got to reinvent yourself by getting with these young cats, that way I stay fresh in the game. That's the secret to my longevity". E-40 emerged with hip-hop quartet The Click in the early nineties before embarking on a successful solo career that included albums such as 'In A Major Way', 'The Hall Of Game' and 'Breakin News'. Widely credited with developing hip-hop lexicon by introducing terms such as 'Fa Shizzle', E-40 is also the author of the book 'E-40's Book of Slang'.

Review: Om presents 'Go Left', a musical masterpiece conducted by E himself, showcasing the first release of the new Bay Area super group 'Tha
Underdogs' aka Gift of Gab and Lateef the Truth Speaker. Up to their usual business, Gab and Lateef have no problem tearing the
beat to shreds with their vocal mastery. E kills it on the production tip; hard-to-find breaks on vinyl become the source of inspiration.
On the remix, the world-renowned DJ Exile, who has had the pleasure to produce tracks for G-Unit, Jurassic 5, Ghostface and Slum Village,
kills it with dirty drums and a funky bassline. It's one of those beats that makes your face squinch up like you just smelled something
nasty! E smooths things out on the b-side with Bicasso of Living Legends. 'Banana Split', a west coast party track has an uptempo
feel that is specially designed for the ladies. Bicasso proves his skills time after time over the perfectly crafted E Da Boss piece. We're
throwing 2 versions in the mix, the 'Beatapella' strips the music down to emphasize the drums, while the 'Vocal' mix is intertwined
with subtle chord riffs. If you want to do your own remixing, take a crack at the accapella. It will fit perfectly in your mix!

Scene (instrumental edit)
Review: Gilles Peterson has already called in the tracks for a special upfront play on his Radio 1 show off the back of The Earlyman’s Myspace site. Tate track 'Scene' witnesses Trevor Goodchilde spouting lyrics about deteriorating mental heath - a long-term illness Edmund has learned to live with - and cocaine-induced paranoia and spiraling emotion, set to a melodic yet abstracted, electronic-inspired hip hop soundscape. Move next to 'Take Over' featuring Kombo - a synth-laden bling fantasy - Kombo’s lyrical flow is outstanding. Final track on the EP is 'Higher' which features Goodchilde’s wife, Fiona Mahon - a blatant diss to the uninspired music that currently surrounds us. Also check out the genius at work in the instrumental edit’s multi-layered modern masterpieces. DJ 9/10: "Edmund Cavi (aka The Earlyman) worked with Lady Sovereign on last year’s download fave 'Hoodie', so you may be familiar with him (but not know it) and his 'Scene' EP is definitely worth checking out for its mix of hip hop, grime and electric flavas. The cut to check here is the bumping, fierce funk/hip hop grime of 'Take Over' featuring some sick, sick rhymes from Kombo.

This one is actually a collaboration with longtime friend and co-producer Oliwa and it has a stunning lead vocal that is full pf passion and heart ache and comes from Colombian-Canadian talent Lido Pimienta. The drums are slow, heavy and cumbia influenced extra bass synths, keys, guitars and drums all making it feel contemporary as well as traditional. We're told "the vision of this track is one of upliftment of womxn and femmes everywhere."

This thoughtful vinyl reissue of The East Flatbush Project's cold and sinister 1996 classic 'Tried By 12' features the original song in all its shivery glory, not to mention the rare instrumental version on the B-side. His sound, a blend of lo-fi soul and hip-hop akin to Jordan Rakei and Tom Misch, garnered attention when Spotify UK featured him on their New Music Friday cover. Additionally, Music Business Worldwide Magazine nominated him as one of The Hottest Independent Artists In The World and now he backs up that potential with 'The Way Things Were,' featuring the mellifluous vocals of Isaac Waddington.

Review: Eddie C met fellow Berlin-based artist LJ Simon a couple of years back. The pair bonded over their joint love of "boogie-funk" (as Soul Clap put it) and soon the Canadian was in the studio remixing a couple of Simon's collaborations with vocalist Idriss. Now presented on this "45" as a vinyl-only release, those two mixes are well worth checking. On side A you'll find 'I Wonna Know' [sic], a delicious fusion of Soul II Soul style street soul, tactile boogie synths and grandiose orchestral disco samples topped off by a fine lead vocal. The flipside dub of 'Rendez-Vous' is arguably even better - a jaunty boogie-reggae affair piled high with colourful synth sounds, echoing vocal snippets and toe-tapping beats.

Murder Murder (4:31)
If I Had (4:03)
Review: Legendary Detroit rapper Eminem has always been provocative in his work. His lyrics have taken aim at just about everyone and anyone but that never stopped him from doubling down. On 'Murder Murder', he tells the tale of two 'perfect crimes', each one different and with a different ending. It came at the time of his The Slim Shady album but never made the cut, instead, it appeared in the soundtrack for Ice Cube's Next Friday movie but with a softer, more mellow instrumental. 'If I Had' is on the flip of this limited edition red vinyl 7".

Big Daddy Kane - "Ain't No Half Steppin" (Phoreyz & Brisk Multramix) (3:39)
Review: The Heat Rock label has been turning out overlooked gems or stone-cold classics from the worlds of funk, soul and hip hop for a while. Here they reissue the first volume of their Altered Tapes series on 300 copies of limited edition red vinyl. It's a real doozy for collectors and DJs alike as it packs a proper punch. First up is an Altered Tapes remix of The Emotions's 'Blind Alley' which is super sweet soul music with a fresh hip hop beat and big horn sections powering along. On the back side, Phoreyz & Brisk offer a Multramix of Big Daddy Kane's cool and catchy 'Ain't No Half Steppin.'

The Vibes (feat Ephniko) (3:55)
Review: Afro-Carribean Latin fusionists Empresarios have been doing their thing with modest success since the turn of the decade, serving up albums and singles that cleverly combine elements of cumbia, reggae, salsa, hip-hop, dub and house. Here they appear on 7" for the very first time, serving up two typically steamy slabs of ear-pleasing dancefloor fusion for the Virginia-based Boogieburg imprint. While stoned Latin hip-hop flipside "The Vibes" is undoubtedly a cheeky, cheery and quietly impressive affair, it's A-side "Morena" that hits home hardest. Sitting somewhere between electro-cumbia, salsa and skanking Latin pop, it's a full-force blast of sunshine that will sound particularly potent at outdoor parties in the summer months ahead.

Review: Released across 2 12"s the Emptyheads debut releases are dropping simultaneously. 12" number one includes the Emptyheads original mix-an accessible and catchy piece of hip-hop/dance aimed squarely at a mainstream dancefloor. Getting plenty of airplay and from the likes of Plump DJs and strong magazine reviews including IDJ record of the month.

It's My Thing (5:43)
You're A Customer (5:22)
Review: Mr Bongo has already reissued a swathe of classic albums and singles from legendary hip-hop duo EPMD, whose place in the pantheon of rap greats has long been assured. Here they continue to mine the duo's catalogue, delivering a new edition of the pair's 1987 debut single (which, it should be noted, has long been hard to find on "45"). 'It's My Thing' remains a classic hip-hop club cut, with flowing rhymes rising above a backing track rich in raw drum machine hits, aquatic p-funk bass and sampled snatches of a smooth, disco-era soul number. Flipside 'You're a Customer' is a more sparse and stripped back affair, with slightly faster-paced raps riding stuttering beats and a squelchy synth bassline.

You Gots To Chill (4:16)
Review: An original 7" of this gem will cost you upwards of 100 quid so Know How are doing us all a favour here. As EPMD, Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith were a red hot duo who served up many quintessential rap gems. "So Watcha Sayin'" is taken from their second album "Unfinished Business", imbued with scratching by DJ Scratch, deeply buried chords and of course a slick verse that is pure old school. While flipside "You Gots To Chill" has some fresh vocoder work, dusty drum loops and body popping bass, the a-side takes all the glory here.

Let The Funk Flow (4:19)
Review: Mr Bongo's EPMD reissue series continues with a fresh pressing of one of the NYC duo's most significant and best-loved singles, 1988's 'You Gots To Chill'. Predating much of the West Coast G-funk material that later covered similar sonic ground, it sees the duo delivering some of their rap verses over a beat crafted from samples of Zapp's P-funk classic 'More Bounce To The Ounce' and Kool & The Gang party classic 'Jungle Boogie'. This time round, it comes backed by another EPMD classic from the same period: the mid-tempo, JB's-sampling head-nodder that is 'Let The Funk Flow'. That's never appeared on a single before, making this "45" even more desirable.

I'm Housin (4:00)
I'm Housin (instrumental) (4:17)
Review: Although it was originally released at the height of hip-house mania (1988 to be exact), EPMD's 'I'm Housin' is not a rap-sporting house record. It is, though, a bona-fide club classic, with E Double E and PMD trading verses atop a rolling, dancefloor-friendly groove built from elements of Aretha Franklin's 1971 soul classic 'Rock Steady'. All these years on, it still sounds fresh - as this Mr Bongo reissue of the rare 1989 UK seven-inch version proves. In a word: essential.

The Big Payback (4:50)
So Wat Cha Sayin’ (4:57)
Review: A 7" is all about having a perfect nugget of music on the most compact of wax, and here Mr Bongo pick out two of the best cuts from one of the greatest crews to touch the mic. EPMD were on their finest form when they dropped Unfinished Business in 1989, doubling down on the runaway success of their debut Strictly Business, and here we get two of the album's hottest joints for your instant gratification. 'The Big Payback' piles the funk on heavy, keeping it moody in the low end for EPMD to do their thing over the top, while original opening track 'So Wat Cha Sayin' nestles on the B side with one of the wildest rub downs Erick and Parrish ever committed to record. Truly essential hip hop from the golden era.

Strictly Business (radio mix) (3:30)
Strictly Business (instrumental mix) (5:25)
Review: EPMD arrived as an almost unbelievably well-formed hip hop group in the 1980s. Right from the moment they dropped their 1989 debut - 'Strictly Business' - they soared, immediately backed it up with 'Unfinished Business' in 1989 then came more big hitters like 'The Big Payback.' But 'Strictly Business' remains one of the NYC duo's most significant and best-loved singles and it is pressed up here to its own 7" courtesy of hardcore fans Mr Bongo. It's a track with tons of samples, scratching, smooth bars and churning beats. Flip it over for an instrumental.

Review: EPMD are a group of American rappers from Brentwood, New York. Formed in 1987, they are one of the prominent acts in East coast hip-hop scene. The group's name is an acronym for "Erick and Parrish Making Dollars", referencing the members, Erick Sermon ("E Double") and Parrish Smith ("PMD"). "Blow" is an excellent new release on Def Squad.

Eric B Is On The Cut (3:44)
Review: Mr Bongo are in the midst of a series of Eric B & Rakim reissues and next up on a limited 7" is 'I Ain't No Joke' backed with 'Eric B Is On The Cut.' The a-side was a first single from the legendary pair's debut studio album Paid In Full and was always one of its most monumental moments. Rakim's rhymes grab you from the off and don't let you go, with the man himself saying it took four days to get this one right. Samples of Dexter Wansel and The J.B's really make it pop. Going down a deeper path, with big DJ scratches, reversed stabs and an even more old school flavour, 'Eric B Is On The Cut' is another vital jam.

Review: Eric B & Rakim remain two of hip hop's most love characters. Their wordplay and beat making was second to none back inter prime and has barely been bettered since. For that reason reissue slick this will always be in hot demand. This one focuses on the pair's 'Eric B For President,' a golden era great from 1986 that now comes on 7" after being an elusive find for hip hop heads for many years. This particular tune was Rakim at his most raw and direct best. The rap hero lay down the foundation here of what he would build his whole career on.
