Review: Perhaps one of the most important bands to come out of Manchester ever. Up there with Joy Division, their funky post-punk is the very essence of that genre and possibly why a lot of bands like to call themselves post-punk. They're just wishing they sound as good as A Certain Ratio. For this latest release, the follow-up to their album It All Comes Down To This, they've reworked songs from said album - sensationally - and released a Christmas single. 'Now And Laughter' is described as an ode to "the unsung heroes that are on hand when the pressures of the festivities can become too much to bear." It's awash with sumptuous echoing guitar, a somber lead vocal which makes you want to raise your lighter and gently sway. There's a hint of David Bowie in there and the lyrics appear genuinely emotional and appreciative. This is a song of blissful poignance that can help remind us of what really matters in life as it captures a sense of vulnerability and awe in the magic of the moment.

Review: It doesn't get much more appealing, really. One of the UK's most critically revered and cult-followed bands teams up with arguably the finest British indie label for the latest in the latter's celebrated 7" single series. A Certain Ratio's most recent long player, It All Comes Down To This, was produced by Speedy Wunderground's Dan Carey, and so it makes sense that the imprint and group now team up again for this exclusive one-off. It certainly sounds as good as you'd hope, the two tracks here finding a space in the trippier and weirder end of the ACR spectrum. 'Clockwork Orange' grinds and strains its way through a stepping, dark and shadowy feeling. Flip it to find the appropriately titled 'Dubwork Orange' doing something, well, dubbier, with that source material.

Review: Knotweed welcomes back a label regular in A Thousand Details here and he once again delves deep into groovy machine funk. His high-impact sound is always intense but is never short on style. 'Hammersmith Conjunction' is up first and races out of the blocks on some surging, serene and Detroit-style techno. 'Ashbourne Grove' is a more heads-down affair for the dark of the night with paranoid synth patterns looping tightly over the cantering drums. Review: After five years on ice, Greg Wilson has rebooted his long-running A&R Edits imprint, an outlet the UK electrofunk pioneer founded back in 2013. As usual, the edits come not from the man himself, but rather mates and collaborators. Ian Ossia steps up first with 'Papa Stoned', a deep, driving, dubby and lightly acid-flecked rework of 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' with tightened, beefed-up drums and heaps of peak-time potential. Over on the flip, Che and Matica provide a 'cryptic retouch' of a familiar disco-funk favourite (titled here 'Dream a Dream'), foregrounding heady horn blasts, sprawling and spacey synth solos, and another sweat-soaked disco groove.

Review: Planet Orange Records' fifth release is a four-tracker from the legendary minds behind Alien Recordings, aka A2 and Stopouts, who take one side each. From the opening moments, the Beyonders EP weaves a thread between the halcyon days of tech and minimal from the 90s but with forward-thinking energy. A²'s 'Glider' is a happy, piano-laced celebration to start with ,then 'Let's Get It Together' cuts loose with lithe pads and more mid-tempo drums. Stopouts steep up for the flip and soon melts the mind with some tightly woven acid and cosmic tech on 'Sin City' and 'Kartwheel' then brings a more freewheeling and loopy groove with some neon colours dripping down its face.

Review: Phonogramme is in the middle of a fine series of releases that highlight the great work of legendary US deep house don Abacus. Analog Stories Vol 3 opens with the lush depths of 'It's Bubbling (Short Stories)' then gets more busy with 'Beautiful African Girl' which features humid pads and jazzy keys with dense percussive layers. 'After The Disco' (Submariner edit) sinks back into smooth grooves with light sprinklings of percussion and nimble drums and last of all 'Take A Trip' (feat Keitajuma) closes out with ambient laced and late night sounds.

Review: This three-track release from a legendary Toronto house producer is a cream example in deep house sophistication. 'Kickstarter (Mainpass)' opens with jazzy, melodic elegance, its slick, clean production exuding class and warmth. The track's deep grooves and epic progression make it very appealing for DJ's. 'Music For Table Tennis' shifts gears with an electro-tinged beat, enveloping listeners in a lush, deep soundscape that radiates beauty and warmth. Review: While much of the material they release is brand spanking new, Phonogramme is not averse to reissuing choice gems from the 1990s. That's the case here, as the French deep house label offers a new edited - pressed to striking pink marbled wax - of Analog Trks Vol 1, a 1997 EP from former Prescription Records artist Abacus (real name Austin Bascom). This edition varies from the original, featuring two of the four cuts and a previously unreleased take of another. Check first 'We Cookin' Now', a deliciously deep, slow-building masterpiece of smoky late night sonics, stripped-back percussion, Chez Damier motifs and subterranean bass, before admiring the tech-tinged deep house bounce of 'Opinion Rated R'. Rounding things off is 'Black Thanxx (Instrumental)', a kind of deep house/deep acid fusion workout rich in spacey chords, analogue bass and prototype tech-house bleeps.

Review: Deep house originator Abacus is back in the game having revived his Re:Think label "with a new vision & energy." The first EP, Analogue Stories Vol 1, is a bold one that opens with a monologue from a classic New York movie about street gang warriors. It sets a moody tone which then leads into warm deep house grooves. 'Spaceflight' rides on loose, jumbled drums, toms and basslines that are topped with sustained cosmic chords and 'In4mation' then brings heady and wispy melodies that encourage you to dream as the soul-drenched grooves roll on. 'Blaktronics' shuts down with a more prickly percussive edge. It's a welcome return for this master of the form.

Review: Multi-artist EPs have all been all the rage of late, though few can boast quite as strong a line-up of artists as this one from dependable French deep house label Phongramme. It begins with a gorgeous chunk of detail-heavy, sun-splashed electronic deep house brilliance courtesy of Abacus (an artist whose discography also contains outings on Prescription, Innermood and NDATL Muzik) and ends with a vibraphone-solo sporting shuffler from the effervescent Byron The Aquarius and Computer Jay ('When The Freaks Come Out'). Sandwiched in between you'll find two more must-have workouts: the bumpin', brilliant and spiritually uplifting 'States of Motion' by Fred P, and a typically dusty, jazzy and warming number by Colombian hero Felipe Gordon ('The Gordon Way').

Review: What's that, a new year means a new label from Burnski? We'd expect nothing else. The man has more imprints than a beach has grains of sand, but importantly they all serve a purpose and all kick out killer jams. Mikasa starts with this lush and lithe prog house EP from Abdul Raeva. Stylish opener 'Cream' is a bouncy, feel-good and sleek electronic house sound for peak time fun. Review: Steve Butler's most recent full-length excursion as Abel, Cosmic Law, rightly received plenty of plaudits on its release last year. 'Hand Made', a spacey, tech-tinged deep house featuring evocative spoken word vocals by American wordsmith Brother Basil, was one of that set's stand out cuts. This single release naturally features Butler's original mix, plus three new reworks. Rising star Peacey kicks things off with a spacey, bouncy, breakbeat-sporting revision, before Rocco Radamaal delivers an analogue bass-propelled, keyboard stab-sporting 'Raw Dub' that sounds like it was tailor made for dark, strobe-lit peak-time dancefloors. To round things off, sometime nu-disco sorts South Beach Recycling re-imagine the track as an intergalactic, ultra-deep slab of house hypnotism wrapped in spacey electronics.

Review: Milkcrate Mondays has got a red hot 7" on its hands here with DJ Abel and DJ Spinobi taking one side each. The former kicks off by, says the label, "taking an Ocean classic for a trip to Miami." His take on 'Lost' is a funk-laced jam that blends r&b vocals with bubbling beats and jazzy keys into something brilliantly seductive. On the flip side, DJ Spinobi lays down some heavyweight Afro drum patterns and raw rap bars on 'Bay Bunny' while 'PRVNZA VIP' is a more blissed-out island sound with reggaeton undertones and angelic Spanish vocals up top. A real summer weapon.

Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

Review: Three standout tracks from Dave Lee's 2023 album Metamorphosis - which he dropped under his AC Soul Symphony alias - now get pulled apart and reworked by the one and only Dub-disco king Ray Mang. First comes 'It's Got To Be Love' with its super funky and bubbly bass and lush string elegance, then he flips 'Tradewinds' into a deeper, still lush and lavish instrumental disco gem that is seductive and warm for the winter months. Last but not least, 'K-Jee' brings an infectious groove to the dance floor with a little more percussive energy and upbeat bounce - but again swooning strings are the icing on the cake. All three of these are classy and sophisticated reworks from the one and only Mang.

Review: Dave Lee's Z Records has always joined the dots between the best of disco past, present and future and this latest 12" is another such sublime gem. This EP opens up with a brand new cut 'Soul Underground', which takes takes a train journey to some of the most famous clubs of the disco era over a warm, bumping, string heavy backing track. Art Of Tones mix of 'I Want To See You Dance' is a funkier number with hip-swinging claps & layers of energy. Things get super smooth with 'Windy City Theme' (Glenn Underground's Orchestra Electronica mix) - an irresistibly cosmic remix of one of the most popular cuts from the Metamorphosis album. Add in the lush orchestral reprise & handy acappella and you have a joyous EP to behold.

Review: After years of silence following the loss of Sonny Knight in 2017, former Lakers members Blair Krivanek and Cy Pierpont return with their new project, Ace Box Shift. The duo have made plenty of standout contributions to the soul revival scene before now and here they debut on Secret Stash Records with another pair of fiery instrumental cuts that work exceptionally well for DJs and dancefloors alike. Review: This release marks the return of a 1989 classic and it has been remastered for the occasion. Ace Buzz is a project by Tony Baron and Gery Francois, who are known for acts like Teknokrat's. Their track 'Moskitos' is a playful, raw example of Belgian New Beat with a slightly lighter touch than the genre's typical aggression. It features simple Balearic piano chords and samples that evoke a surreal scene of someone in a cheap, hot Ibiza hotel battling mosquitos. Review: For their latest trick, the Rawax crew has taken a deep dive into the back catalogue of Roman Flugel and Jorn Elling Wuttke's work as Acid Jesus - the project with which they made their name before morphing into Alter Ego. Lead cut 'Radium' dates from 1995 and wraps alien electro sonics, proto-minimal techno motifs and pots and pans percussion around a deep bassline and hypnotic machine drums. The pair's passion for heads-down hypnotism and metallic noises is further explored on the superb 'Uranium Smuggle' (which originally appeared on the flip-side of 'Radium'), while 'Hibernation Drive' is a punchy and evocative electro number first released in 1997.

It's a new release, limited and loud, bringing together the long-sought-after 'Marvin' with the all-new 'Roger' i two deeply soulful cuts that swing between heat and haze with effortless touch. Review: Whatever an 'acidulant' is, we daren't try to convey it directly in words, since we think the associations conjured up by their latest record 'Sonic Expansion' should be more than enough. The artist also known as Neil Hales lays down four unusually broken offcut janks for Gated here. The tracks play back like greyscale, jagged chindogu, relying less on pure floor-filling utility and more in the excesses of inventive effort - of mind-body unity - that it might require to make out their danceability. Review: This new solo outing from Aussie talent Ad Nauseaum has it all - acid, rave, techno, hardcore and more. 'Omega System' sets a pretty brutal tone to get things underway with filtered synths and blazing acid lines searing about the mix over raw, hard, flat drums. 'Alpha System' is even quicker and brings serrated synth madness to video game motifs and slamming kicks. Last of all is 'Always Acid,' a track that was made back in 2004 but doesn't sound in any way out of date. It's another one to blow the roof off any party.

The title cut opens up with some lazy, wavy, dubby grooves with heady pads and then a dub version makes it even more fleshy and horizontal. Review: Adam F has been rolling out a series of rebooted classics on his label, 181 Recordings, co-founded with vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw. As a lead-up to his forthcoming album, he's released revitalized versions of 'Brand New Funk' and 'Music In My Mind.' Now, he turns his attention to Circles,' his iconic Drum & Bass track, presenting both a fresh reboot and a new version in collaboration with Pola & Bryson, which has been making waves on d&b dancefloors globally. Review: That the word 'funk' should take on an almost entirely new meaning under the aegis of drum & bass is telling, but that shouldn't deter us from interrogating the ideaistic chain connecting the funk of the 1960s and 70s to today's modern, 170BPM+ *neuro*-funk, *drum*-funk etc.. Take, for example, Adam F. His classic track 'Brand New Funk' came about after he bought a second hand Fender Rhodes Electric Piano, Vocoder and Clavinet D6 Honer. All staples of the funk era, the ensuing track paid solid homage to that era, combining compelling collieries with dastard drums and, in so doing, effortlessly fusing the spirit of the former funk with the synaptic sonic overloads of the latter. Now rebooted and revitalised, 'Brand New Funk' bespeaks a timeless retelling of one of Adam F's most ingenious eureka moments.

Review: Adlas steps up to the Hayes label here for the very first time and impresses while doing so. His take on techno is economical and stripped back but never light on impact. 'Deadstock' opens with glitchy textures and creepy, subterranean sonic echoes while a linear beat rolls on. 'Magnetic' is a little more punchy and is powered by a pulsing bassline while 'Open Question' is a dubbed-out cut with beats that skate along and twanging hits reverberate throughout. 'The Rumors Are True' shuts down with another glitchy broken beat and coarse claps with some tripped-out synth work up top.

Review: London's seasoned producer ADMNTi with four tracks that distil years of immersion in tech-house, jungle and grime into sharp, percussive club tools with distinct UK flair. 'Second Hand Sushi' drives the point home with its snapping drums, snarling basslines and wiry synth stabsibig-room energy and definitely no excess fat. 'Lost Fruits' stays steppy, leaning into sub pressure and pirate radio textures, soundbites crackling like a tape pack rewind. On the flip, 'Diptych' shifts tone without dropping paceichopped strings and warped vocals glide over crunchy drum work, locking into a more introspective groove. Closer 'Shrublands' dips further into dubwise atmospherics, pairing wobbly low-end with hazy flute lines and ghosted sax, while snippets of graffiti lore from both London and New York float through the mist. Early support from Ben UFO, Enzo Siragusa and Tristan da Cunha points to the range and functionality of these cutsiwhether heads-down or heads-up, they pull threads from the capital's soundsystem heritage into something that works across times and tempos. A strong first outing for Forms World and a clear step forward from ADMNTi.

Review: A hugely exciting and thoroughly danceable new 7" from Florence Adooni, blowing any other artist who could even remotely hope to stake a worthy claim to contemporary highlife out of the park. Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Review: Clut deliver a specialised clout-glut with a fresh split EP from rising artist Alric Aerial, who here teams up with yet another artist who's so far flown under the label's radar - Electrodynamique. Here the pair deliver four electro-dancefloor tracks primed for every situation: sleazy bar, backlit festival stage, ironic doomsday scenario, you name it. This EP's cascading sixteenths flow like metallic droplets, their acid lines and FM blurps splurging forth with increasing restlessness and impertinence, and decreasing self-control. Particularly squelchy is Aerial's 'Tough Cuts', which moves trigger-happy on the cutoff filter whilst dungeon-bound sine tones splay across the top edges of the track, like ectoplasms left behind after a string of Zeno's paradoxes have been solved. 'We Are The City' by Electrodynamique indulges a final emery note, abrading its curveball electro mix to a grinding, apocalyptic oblivion.

Review: A strikingly unique dance music project from Nagasaki producer, DJ and sound director Keisuke Yamazoe, Aflex Combo has always been an impressive project, straddling several EPs stretching back to 2002 - and all centring, in the artist's own words, on heavy funk beats and obscure jazz and Latin grooves. Jazz Roomn Records now release his cover-remix of the underground club classic 'Hibaros', originally by B&G Rhythm (Donny Beck & Steve Gutierrez, featuring Bobby Lyle). Several unusual time signatures modulate across its A-sided, dancey groove - don't be fooled, things need not settle into a 4/4 repetition to be worthy of a ball - whilst B-sider 'Something Special' lets things slack a little more, letting several, live-recorded drum loops rest on top of one another, while a sort of glockenspiel/celeste-esque instrument tinkles over the top. Something special indeed.

Review: Whereas most record label prefer to revel in the idea of the finished project, a smaller cohort still prefers to play up the idea of the cutting room floor, the dubplate, the manuscript, the demo. Whilst dubstep might've revived the dubplates trend for a more contemporary listener, US imprint Disco Dub Demos (how apt) know all too well that of the earliest forms of this "rawness fetishism" in music emerged from disco. Here the label-born moniker African Duplate lays down four ultra-utilitarian tools that shoot squarely for the essence of - they name it - 'Afro Disco'. On the B-side also comes a worthy, somewhat haunting flip track, 'Come On & Groove It'.
