Body Mind Spirit EP
Cat: JMEP 023. Rel: 06 May 21
Meditation #1-2 (1:36)
Body Mind Spirit (feat Dumama) (7:05)
Saturn Return (6:37)
Elevation #1-2 (2:51)
Phoenix Rising (5:07)
Nuit Des To'eres (8:18)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

So They Say
Uff (original)
Review: Baby Ford and Zip need little introduction and debut on Trelik as "BFZ" featuring co-conspiritor Thomas Melchior. The trio originally appeared on the 1999 "Perlondon" 12" for Perlon with Ford and Zip re-uniting for the "Glidin' Along The Riverbed" release then 2010's "Clean Hands" on PAL SL. Thomas Melchior recently appearing on [a:rpia:r] and his own Aspect Music kicks off the 12" with a floor friendly up-beat 9 minute "Melchior Productions LTD" edit remix of "Uff". An "Uffapella" closes the A-side featuring abstract sound design and textured vocals. Side-B's "So They Say" creates a feeling of space and unhurried rhythmatics whilst the title track "Uff" combines deep instrumentals, chord and haunting vox with subtle bass and modulating kick. Recorded in London and Berlin. Mastered at D & M.

Mike Clark - "Nu Day"
Zhao-Ski - "Ova The Limit"
Terrence Parker - "Lonely World"
Brian Harden - "String Vibe"
Sean Deason - "Beautiful 1"
Review: D3 Recordings offshoot D3 Elements is only three releases deep, but already their releases are reaching "must check" status. Following their recent release of a superb EP from US deep house veteran Brian Harden, the Paris-based imprint offers up something a little different - an EP of gorgeously deep and melodic flavours that joins the dots between head-nodding instrumental hip-hop and floor-friendly 4/4 fare. There are plenty of surprises, too, including techno stalwart Terrence Parker delivering a flute-heavy downtempo head-nodder, some gorgeous beatdown from Detroiter Mike Clark, and a thrillingly string-laden chunk of deep house bliss from the aforementioned Harden. Recommended.

The Ruffneck - "Phase Shift" (5:42)
Samix - "Technique Amiga" (4:06)
Review: Ninja Tune aren't the only wax shuriken-touting dance gesticulators on the block. Lumbago Records are their reissuing rivals; hailing from France, this anonymous pair focus on rereleasing long-lost dance cuts from the crates, new and old, compiling them into short EPs. Scratchy electro and breaks bits from EFX and Samix time travel all the way from 1991 ('Technique Amiga' sounds like it's lifted straight from an early Lara Croft soundtrack), and are reconciled with two tracks made in the last 5 years - and one bang in between from 2001, The Ruffneck's 'Phase Shift'. An impressive exercise in cross-generation reconciliation. Electro will never die!

WK7 - "Wait" (5:56)

Zigg Gonsalezz - "Sunday" (Work It) (4:09)
Review: On the latest missive from his energy packed Power House imprint, Rene Pawlowitz - he of Shed and Head High fame - has chosen to showcase tracks from two of his lesser-celebrated alter egos, WK7 and Zigg Gonsalezz. As befits the peak-time ready, party-starting nature of the label, A-side 'Wait' offers an addictive blend of bustling, beefed-up house drums, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and sleazy, rave-igniting riffs. Over on the flip we get two distinctive takes on 'Sunday': the classic New Jersey garage meets Nu Groove style deep house warmth of the '3pm' version, and a stomping late night revision (entitled 'Work It') that peppers a chunky, extra-percussive beat with tight electric piano stabs and booming bass.

Review: Zadig is a well-regarded French techno producer and for good reason. If you're unsure, lock into this new one on Syncrophone with its four perfectly executed cuts that fuse Detroit, electro and techno in fizzling and sizzling forms. 'Gradient' is a rickety, dubby but punchy opener, 'Edge To Hapiness' is more nuanced with its eerie cosmic chords and angle drum chatter, then 'Fire Hunter' is a raw, frazzled and intense warehouse jam. Last of all is the chattery class madness and undulating bass tightness of 'Spectrum Disorder'.

Di Plastica (5:53)
Di Plastica (Maara remix) (6:21)
Review: Newcomer Zara makes her debut on Salt Mines with an EP that takes its cues from "the sounds, colours and textures of festivals in the Australian bush." As a result, it is organic techno with a rich array of organic and natural details that make it an experience for both body and head. 'Breathe' opens with bird calls, the sound of scuttling insects and nice leggy, rubbery drums. 'Fragments' is a more ragged and rough rhythm with the sound of stampeding herds and 'Di Plastica' is a more aqueous dub with neon fireflies darting about the mix. A Mara mix offers pure liquid techno joy.

Zarate Fix - "Sands Of Time" (5:01)
DJ Sotofett - "Coiled" (Acid mix) (5:22)
Review: The latest Sex Tags Wania missive is a 10"-shaped soundclash between Phil Sherburne/Pitchfork agitator DJ Sotofett and a true legend of the Sydney scene in Carlos Zarate aka Zarate Fix (Thug/Sweet Chilli). On the A side, Zarate serves up "Sands Of Time," a smooth low-slung groove carried by exotic vocals reminiscent of Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard; a nice touch. On the flip, Sotofett takes it down to grinding and slow-burning pace with the lysergic EBM styles of "Coiled (Acid mix)" which is one gutsy groove indeed; with a seriously nasty arpeggio covered in the right amount of rust and dust as we like!

Review: Sydney's Thug Records are back with label head honcho Zarate Fix teaming up again with DJ Sotofett on the Planetary Involvement EP. This follows up that great "Sands Of Time" release on Wania a little while back. The title track is a serving of emotive and deep techno that will appeal to fans of the Acido/SUED sound with its sonar blips, pan pipes and distant tribal chants and drums all working in perfect harmony. On the flip there's also "Solar Mixxx", a lush sci-fi ambient journey kinda sounding like a lost Rhythim Is Rhythm B side from way back.

Jan Kincl - "Sugar" (7:06)
Barce - "Stigma" (6:19)
Review: The young but already well-formed Deep Inspiration Show label continues its dedication to quality deep house with a new EP that comes as part of their international artist series. Zarenzeit from Zurich and Roger Versey from Arkansas open with 'So Smooth', a blend of rich keys, soulful loops and dynamic vocals over a sensual bassline. Melchior Sultana hails from sunny Malta and follows with 'Nothing Like It Seems' which features silky chords and a shuffling rhythm ideal for late-night sets. On the B-side, Jan Kincl from Zagreb delivers 'Sugar,' a fusion of house and cinematic disco with organic drums while Spain's Barce closes with 'Stigma,' a melodic union of deep house and techno.

The Harvest (Joaquins Bayara Citizens version) (9:52)
Review: Austrian jazz pianist Joe Zawinul has seen it and done it all. The man has been part of the jazz scene since the 1960s, and he has landed on timeless imprints such as Columbia, Atlantic and Prestige, so top marks there and absolutely no questions asked. He's up for something a little bit different this time and, in fact, he appears only as the original producer of "The Harvest", remixed here into an acid-laden and self-stlyed 'Bayara Citizens' house bombshell from Joaquin Claussell. There is little no jazz at the core of this ten minute monster, but the arrangement is wild and uncontrollable, much like the rhythms of the 60's jazz scene. A trip you wouldn't expect...

Review: Munich's pride The Zenker Brothers throw down a 'focused daily positivity practice' for Hidden Shelter, the latest release on their Ilian Tape imprint. The result is four tracks that read like a self-help manual: get motivated by the industrial strength breaks of 'Enjoy Reality', followed by the dubbed-out, greyscale stomp of 'Look Precisely' and find your vision. Turn over to side B and clarity awaits, albeit beyond the dense fog of the cavernous and glacial 'Focus On Positivity' and closing it out is the steely power of 'Practice Daily' which is rather typical of the duo's renown style and sure to inspire the potential in others.

First Feeling (5:58)
Motion (5:22)
Review: Having spent the last couple of years concentrating on his collaborative Zenker Brothers project with brother Dario, Marco Zenker has decided the time is right to deliver a new solo 12". Predictably, he hits the mark from the off, successfully blending starburst chords and loose, clattering drum machine rhythms on the tech-jazz influenced "Amb-01". Those looking for a more metronomic, 4/4 club techno roller should check the bounding kick drums and restless hi-hats of "Isolated". B1 cut "First Feeling" sounds like a Motor City techno take on The Orb's 1989 classic "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain", while closer "Motion" is little less than a sparkling, sunburst tribute to classic, hardcore-era breakbeat techno.

Zsa Zsa Laboum - "Something Scary"
HN03 - "Doughnut Dollies"
Review: Having taken some 12 years to reach its 20th release in fine style with that Neil Landstrumm/Matt Whitehead double header, the Don't imprint overseen by Jerome Hill swiftly (for them) usher in their next release which features two sublime 1988 New Beat classics from Zsa Zsa Laboum and HN03. Laboum's "Something Scary" is perhaps the archetypal New Beat track, commencing with a sample lifted from the dodgy 80s B Movie "The Entity" and displaying some excellent percussion and a powerful and obscure acid line - it still sounds excellent some twenty four years later. On the flip is the R&S classic "Doughnut Dollies" from New Beat icon Eric Beysens under his HN03 moniker features. It's grubby industrial arpeggio sounding equally vibrant today - especially pitched way down to -8 like the New Beat guys used to do!

Review: As Apollo starts to spread its wings into a richer pool of artists in its second guise, so they look to Anton Zap for a healthy seven-track offering that brings warmth to the label that seemed to escape some of the recent releases. There's no doubt Zap is good at creating a mellow atmosphere, but as "Water" demonstrates he can also tease more earthly textures and tones into his ambient techno studies to create a greater depth and impact. There are some more house orientated turns such as the spaced-out shuffle of "Road Trip Song", while "Funky Man" rolls on a sassy beatdown groove and acidic bassline, providing a welcome diversity in amongst the mystical aura of Zap's productions and Apollo's downtempo remit.

Review: Ilian Tape co-founder Dario Zenker has consistently served up some of the label's best releases and now he goes long on this double album, Reflection. He calls it "a reflection through wild times channeled into 63 minutes of machine funk" and we call it 12 tracks of devastating techno on both an emotional and physical level. His tracks often fix with wispy synth lines that bring subtle light to the dusty drums and muggy atmospheres and on the likes of 'Da Conducter' he offers up thumping house with grainy lo-fi pads and muffled leads that hook you in deep. The vast rhythmic variation and switch-up in tempos and moods throughout this album is what keeps it so fresh.
