Jeff Barnes/Tommy McCook/The Supersonics - "The Rooster" (2:47)
Tommy McCook/The Supersonics - "The Saint" (3:06)
Review: Historic British label Harlem Shuffle Records reissue a rare rocksteady track by the Jamaican singer Jeff Barnes, backed by the Jamaican band Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, here. A single-sided 7" vinyl comes with but one dubby audio-delight: the original 1970 version of 'The Rooster', a catchy, whistlingly haunting but no less upbeat song produced by Duke Reid and first released on his eponymous Duke Records label. Harlem Shuffle now add it to their catalogue, which charts only the best in ska and rocksteady.

Vaughn Benjamin - "Take Your Time" (3:38)
The Riddim Activist & Hitman - "Dub Your Time" (4:29)
Review: A brand new 45 featuring the unmistakable voice of Vaughn Benjamin on French label Sir James, he of Midnite and Akae Beka fame. On the A side we have the uplifting roots reggae swagger of 'Take Your Time' where Benjamin speaks truth through his positive message, and there's the mandatory dub version on the flip. Produced by James Danino, with music by Riddim Activist & Hitman recorded at Conscious Embassy Studio in 2017. Mastered at Precise Mastering.

Work All Day

The Dynamites - "Play All Night" (3:29)
Clarence Wears - "Working Mood" (2:50)
The Dynamites - "Got To Work" (3:05)
Review: Only Roots come through with a classic wedge from Barry Biggs. These pure vibes first came in 1976 and on this package you're also treated to the Clarence Wears guitar piece from the same year, plus a couple of spicy dubs. "Work All Day" is a golden offering with an aloof and soulful vocal that drifts up top like a wispy cloud on a summer's day. Muted chords enrich things and the natty riffs keep things subtly funky. That original Wears guitar piece is a real heart wrencher - the guitar rings out into the sky with oodles of reverb giving it even more poignancy.

Bongo Ossie & The Moon Lights - "Black Society" (2:50)
Super 8 Corporation - "Black Version" (2:58)
Review: The reissue of Bongo Ossie & The Moon Lights' Black Society on Hornin' Sounds is a treasure for hardcore reggae enthusiasts. Originally from 1975, the original delivers a classic roots sound with a fantastic collaboration that resonates deeply with lovers of the genre. The timeless track exudes the soulful and socially conscious vibes characteristic of the era. On Sidde-2, 'Black Version' transforms the original into a dub version. With abundant echo effects and an engaging stop-and-start beat, this track offers a dynamic listening experience. It's perfect for DJs seeking to infuse their sets with a vintage yet innovative reggae twist.

Ohm & TM Shuffle - "We Penetrate Them" (8:09)
Atart - "JNVPE" (Genning remix) (7:08)
DJ <3 - "Uyar" (7:29)
Review: MixCult present another various artists 12" of sleek minimal tech and dub tech grooves for discerning DJs, leading in with the shimmering metallic cloudbursts of Bruit Blanc and Moodeep's 'Sunshine'. Ohm & TM Shuffle follow that up with the dreamy, rainy day deepness of 'We Penetrate Them' before Genning remixes Atart's 'JNVPE' into a tightly-wound tripper for the late hours of the dance. DJ <3 gets to send the record off in style with 'Uyar', a contemplative cut laced with downcast synth undulations and a steady-ticking rhythmic undercarriage. If you prefer your 4/4 with a liberal side serving of introspection, this is the record for you.

The Chosen Few - "I Love The Way You Love" (3:46)
The Groove Master - "I Love The Way You Love" (3:52)
Review: For their latest missive, Rock A Shaka have decided to offer up a new pressing of The Chosen Few's early '70s classic "I Love The Way You Love", a slab of languid, soulful sunshine recorded at a time when reggae as we know it today (rather than rocksteady or ska) was still a nascent musical form. While the original vocal version has featured on a number of the Jamaican band's albums over the years, the accompanying flipside "Version" by producer Prince Tony Robinson AKA The Groove Master has previously been frustratingly hard to find. It's worth picking this up just to get it, as Robinson's additional musical flourishes - think Tommy McCook style sax, fluttering flute solos and harder rhythm guitar - lift the band's fine riddim to even higher heights.

Rosin Immersion (4:38)
Dabby You (4:40)
Fathoms (5:30)
50hz (5:22)
Review: Kevin Martin's latest offering for his very own imprint Pressure (named after the seminal album of the same name) comes in the form of a collaboration for the ages with the lead bassist from the bands Sleep and Om, Al Cisneros, owing to The Bug's penchant for working just as much with atmospheric black and drone metal bands as with dub artists and MCs. 'Rosin' is a spacey and immersive four-track EP. Cisneros helms the A with two tracks 'Rosin Immersion' and 'Dabby You', the latter of which is particularly heavy on the cavern reverb and infinity-mirror echo. The Bug's additions are newly stooped in heavyweight dub-techno-and-back-to-dub-again, with 'Fathoms' being a particularly apocalyptic track that combines pretty much all of Martin's influences into a singularly colossal image. The B2, known only as '50hz', is an even freakier version of the B1 track 'Venom', which presumably resonates even deeper at the tone of 50Hz.

Ozone Layer (version) (3:24)
Review: Timeless digital roots and dub from The Disciples here featuring the late Jamaican singer Creation Stepper, who i most famously well known for his iconic 70s roots reggae classics. This release includes a fresh take on Stepper's 1978 track, 'Kill Nebuchadnezzar' and it is paired with another vocal gem, 'Ozone Layer,' plus two powerful dub versions. Originally mixed and produced by Russ D in The Disciples' studio in 1991, this music finally saw the light of day in 2011 on the Disciples Vintage label where it quickly sold out. Now back on a great sounding 12", this is a must for roots and dub heads.

Review: Philadelphia's own Fadda Medina and Medina International serve up this mighty fine 10" for all fans of lover's rock. It is Earl Cunningham who kicks things off on 'Frienemy,' a tune that proves his voice is in top shape. Michael Palmer then comes next with the yearning heartache sounds of 'Where Did I Go Wrong,' and Tasha T keeps tugging at the heart strings with Feeling the Pain (Sufferer).' On the flip are further classic gems from Mikey General and JoJo Mac's 'Wahala Problem,' while a heavy and devastating dub shuts things down. Big EP, this.

Melbourne Douglas - "Rude Boy Don't Fight" (2:50)
King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

Fire Just A Shot (Om Unit remix) (5:56)
Review: Prepare to sink way under the surface with this devilishly deep and minimal new dub cut from Frenk Dublin on the Dutch label Dub Communication. 'Fire Just A Shot' is superbly slow, which gives plenty of room for the rolling drums to sink in and space for the echoing hits to ricochet about the mix. Up top are conscious, anti-war lyrics from Tenor Youthman adding extra meaning to this already heady cut. Flip it over ad you'll get the Om Unit remix which is only slightly more propulsive, and a little busier with the scuffed metal percussion that fills some of the spaces.
