Shadow Of Love (club version) (4:53)
Shadow Of Love (instrumental) (4:54)
Review: There's something unavoidably magnetic about the intersection between ambition and self-awareness and this release, by Charonne, Nemo Vachez, Umberto and T Oceans, knows exactly how to tap into that tension. With each track, there's an undeniable undercurrent of both vulnerability and swaggeriproducers twisting minimal beats into something far deeper, dragging you through shadows with a mix of melancholy and movement. You feel the weight of their collective sound but also their defiant lightness, straddling the line between introspective and dancefloor-driven music. It's a textured, driving release with an ever-present air of mystery.

Munir's Bandung First Trip (7:15)
Meng Que's Yard (2:50)
Mogwaa's Studio In 07307 (5:52)
Knopha's Re-clockwork (3:11)
Review: 1asia is a label that focusses on Asian artists from a broad array of genres and Caslean is next up with the beguiling Sweet Adventure, a remix EP that finds her work reinterpreted by an array of innovative talents. 'Munir's Bandung First Trip' is serene electronica with lush and dreamy lines and naive vocals floating up above the smooth and uplifting rhythms. 'Meng Que's Yard' brings jumbled percussion and sugar synths to a broken beat jumble and 'Mogwaa's Studio In 07307' is a retro-future cut that pairs bouncy nu-disco with dubby pads. Last of all is 'Knopha's Re-clockwork,' another innocent and pure electronic world of neon synths and intriguing vocals.

Charlou - "Last Dance" (6:40)
Charlou - "Controlled Madness" (4:39)
Pleonexia - "Leave" (2:05)
Pleonexia - "In The Shadow" (7:24)
Review: Paris label Chandelle (a Mahres sublabel) flew across the pond to master their latest EP from Charlou in London. Indeed, the gammy-fingered English touch could be said to be exactly what's needed for an industrial / new beat of such staggeringly wicked, girdered proportions. 'Unfinished Sorrow' is the producer's latest and fourth EP, and his first to reach the Chandelle imprint after a series of stopoffs with the likes of 22Recordings, Flight Mode and his very own S.A.C.S.. Here it's 'Controlled Madness' and 'In The Shadow' that impress the most as big new beat tunes go, their smeary double-claps, belting era-specific vocals and roughly resampled drawn-in MIDI beats, all providing ample glue to gestaltify two dance tracks best suited for vampiric dancefloors.

Re-Kabaret 13
Review: Earlier this year Anterior Research Media Comm label presented Clock 2, a USB stick of Clock DVA material that covered audio and video content. Fans of the iconic '80s Steel City industrial act who prefer their Clock DVA in a more traditional format will no doubt be pleased to see that the label have pulled two of the reworks that featured on that USB for this lovingly presented 12" release. Originally composed and programmed by Clock DVA at Astrogys Studio in Salerno, Italy back in 2012, both "Re-Konstructor" and "Re-Kabaret 13" were "developed, produced and remixed" at the Anterior Optofonica Lab in Amsterdam. The former is reworked by OG Clock DVA member Adi Newton along with Maurizio 'TEZ' Martinucci, whilst the latter gets rewired by Raster-Noton co-founder Frank Bretschneider. Both are quite excellent!

Heart Shape Mole (4:29)
Review: Guangzhou, China-based artist and DJ Cola Ran tune sin to her inner reflections and global travel experiences when making music. On her debut EP she taps int the human experience to tell the tale of society's development over the years and blends traditional Asian and African instruments with modern electronics, field recordings and vocals to do so. It's a fulsome ambient, Balearic and downtempo brew with a gorgeous sense of melody and spirituality that offers a soothing escape. 'Riot On The Hush' is a lush tapestry of hand drums and xylophone-like sounds that rise and fall like a sea current, 'Outta Space' is the same vibe but with a futuristic cosmic twist. These are two of many highlights.

Review: Ghostly International are back on the ante-up with Com Truise aka Seth Haley, a Brooklyn-based synth maverick who has made a name for himself this year. From the melancholic timbres of "Sundripped" to the Italo-disco chimes of "Slow Peels", this is a record with a one size fits all banner. "Norkuy" is also a stunner, showing off Haley's synthesiser skills but "5891" is one of those special moments, sending you swimming in a distant but reassuring world of smooth chords and spwaning cowbells.

Review: After a superb repress of the Volvo Una Hit Italo classic, Bottin's Cristalli Liquidi project is back and this time in cahoots with French-Italiano electro pair Deux Control which is Justine Forever and Rodion. They have cooked up a selection of versions of 'Rosso Carnale' which, we understand, lyrically touches on the colour red and the gentle carnal forces of nature sung in Italian. There is a sped-up version from Bottin, a sparse mix from Deux Control and standout Mutant version with tougher drums but nice silky dub chords and a bright Italo version full of 80s synth nostalgia.

Voyou - "Houseman" (Stockholm Syndrome AU Revamp) (5:51)
Review: An EP that takes you through elevated 80s-inspired coldwave and synth soundscapes, matching nostalgia with modern production and featuring a seamless fusion of proto-techno, EBM and synth-pop. Side-1 opens with Deborah Sasson & MCL's 'Danger In Her Eyes' (Curses Revamp), a thrilling reimagination of new beat and synth-pop. The addition of vocal samples elevates its vintage essence, delivering a futuristic gem that's both haunting and danceable. Next, Andi's rework of 'Philadelphia Five's Not Leaving Without Jerry' injects energy with its uptempo groove, merging EBM rhythms with a dash of disco flair for an infectious, club-ready cut. Side-2 starts with 'House Fatale' (Curses Revamp) by JWB Hits The Beat, an ode to late 80s synth-pop akin to My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. Chopped vocals and melodic synths create a hypnotic, era-defining vibe. Finally, Stockholm Syndrome AU's revamp of 'Voyou's Houseman' leans into heavier industrial and EBM tones, blending them for a powerful conclusion. This collection is a great example in reviving and reinventing vintage sounds, offering a fresh perspective on timeless styles.

C.ru.z - "Nuevo Orden" (5:27)
Human_Aventura - "Playa Rock" (4:47)
Review: As in Dante's Inferno, there are many layers to Paris' dance music underground; and we think it's safe to say that the independent electronica label MAHRES is not among its surface echelons. Spanning industrial, synth, techno and breakcore, MAHRES' sensibility is devilish and collective, preferring the mode of V/A EP, in true fealty to the breakcore releasers of yore. Their latest, 'Serpent a Plumes', nominally describes the feathered serpent - the worst in the bestiary - and hears producers Sektor, U-Died, C.ru.z and Human_Aventura team up for a sonic recapturing of the beast caught on Tascam. Spy-thriller guitar stabs abound on 'Last Stand'; muddied, brash chiptune abrades the ears on 'Playa Rock'; cascading claps and claves clatter around on 'Soul Punisher'; grave sawtooths and crude melodies on 'Nuevo Orden'. All huge electro portenders of a serpentine end of the world.

Review: Chase Smith aka the W.T. Records and Apartment associate and documentary filmmaker Christa Majoras are back as brainwave research center with their second full length, Mosaic. Once again the sonically inquisitive pair mix up analogue synths with electro-acoustic experiments, epic and adventurous soundscapes and plenty of raw texture, hooky pop melodies and innocent rhythms. Along the way the duo take influence from their heroes including Ennio Morricone, John Carpenter and Kraftwerk on a record that was laid down in the back of Smith's synthesizer repair shop. It's an absorbing listen once more from this increasingly vital pair.

Review: London's legendary Mute institution goes back to its roots and digs up some of the best work by one of the UK's finest Cabaret Voltaire. These guys don't really need an introduction give the fact that they're pretty much responsible for the rise of post-punk right through to the birth of techno. It was about time a new compilation of their stuff was released, especially one as brutally on-point as this one! All the classics such as "Nag Nag Nag", "Kneel To The Boss" and "On Every Other Street" are one here but the more obscure rarities that were previously only available on 7" are the real winners. "Just Fascination", for example, is one you'll certainly want on a longer, re-mastered cut! Downright essential!

Review: Nightwind Records was launched in low-key fashion last year by Danny Wolfers, a platform to self-release digital albums and cassettes under some all new outlandish aliases. Given the general clamour for anything Legowelt-related, it's no surprise to see that Wolfers has elected to grant one of these cassettes, El Saber Del Arpavor by Calimex Mental Implant Corp, a wider vinyl issue. Fans of the Legowelt 12" for PPU will find much to appreciate in the 13 track El Saber Del Arpavor which rides a similar vein of sumptuous, gliding Lowlands boogie with the occasional deviation into more familiar Legowelt territory. See the Sega-referencing "Son Of Shinobi" for a fine example of that!

Review: Quiet Music Under the Moon marks the 2023 debut of Calm, featuring a talented ensemble: Toshitaka Shibata on piano, Yuichiro Kato on saxophone, Tomokazu Sugimoto on upright bass and Kakuei on steel pan. This new collection shifts focus from showcasing virtuosic solos to delivering a meticulously crafted suite of chillout tracks, mostly incorporating "moon" in their titles. The album unfolds like a serene journey through the night, seamlessly transitioning from pieces like 'Drift Into Dreamland' to morning reflections in 'Oyasumi, Ohayo'. The natural sounds of cicadas and gentle summer showers act as connecting threads, enhancing the auditory experience. Musically, the tracks fall into two categories: softly sighing synth melodies reminiscent of 80s cinematic scores and gentle, beatless soundscapes infused with post-rave textures. For example, 'Moonshower' evokes the lush aesthetics of Digital Justice's works, slowed down to a meditative pace. Calm's signature ambient sound shines throughout, characterised by slowly arching pads and sustained chords that invite contemplation. This clear vinyl edition, complete with an obi strip.

Review: The master of instrumental downtempo funk and soul returns with four more sides of gloriously laid back grooves as the label reissues his Before album. Fukagawa Kiyotaka was in top form here with supremely sunny sax motifs and deep, lush drums sinking you in right from the off. He then leans on his cultural heritage with Eastern melodies drifting over starry-eyed chords, layers in plenty of serene strings and even gets jazzy on the fantastic 'Feel It.' A downtempo and Balearic masterpiece for sure.

Review: Candido aka. Luis Schiebeler lays down eight darkwave / Italo numbers for Spain's Oraculo Records as part of their extended EPs series - Megabreakz. The seventh addition to the sonic saga is a hearty, circuit-bent dancefloor haunter, marking the 'inaugural chapter of a two-part epic' by Candido, which promises a journey spanning everything from EBM to new beat to rave breaks. Wherever you place 'Mechanical Dances Part 1' on this vast stylistic continuum, the fact remains that Candido's approach to the post-industrial dance form is as psyche-imprinting as it is floor-denting, often nodding to the profound (sometimes dissociative) experiences common to frequenting such a scene. Peppered throughout - if you know where to find them - are repetitive lyrical mantras, alluding to everything from OOB experiences to controversial French psychoanalysts.

Your Love Will Set You Free
Review: Some four years after Swims brought the work of Dan Snaith to the attention of a whole new audience, the London-based Canadian artist returns with a sixth Caribou album entitled Our Love. Staunch followers of Caribou will know that Snaith tends to adopt different sonic approaches with every long player (compare the psychedelia of Up In Flames with the more spaced out Andorra) but this latest album feels like a natural development of the club influenced sounds of Swims. City Slang call it Snaith's most soulful set yet, and that's certainly helped by the presence of compatriot Jessy Lanza, and like all Caribou albums there is something new that appeals with every listen.

Review: Caribou shares his latest record, this time for City Slang, Honey. The timely follow-up to 2020's Suddenly, Honey comes preceded by the forerunning singles 'Broke My Heart', 'Volume' and 'Honey'. Caribou aka. Dan Snaith has more than proven his mettle as a multifarious artist, with the toweringly popular Odessa album only scratching the surface of what could otherwise be described as a much more experimental, tricky and salubriously varied discography. Honey plays up the pop-oriented capabilities of Snaith's many-tentacled sound, circling the intentionally mystified identity of the artist himself; 'Come Find Me' asks the listener to come find Snaith, while its corresponding music video features a childlike figure in a Brave New World-style jumpsuit, dancing to the song, as if to suggest a coquettish playfulness, poking through the swellingly progressive, end-of-summer house track. Adding to the pangram of bright and hopeful post-folktronica hits, Honey is sure to attract all the late-summer dance bees.

Review: Canadian artist Caribou's much-adored album 'Our Love' hears a reissue, harkening back to a time still occupying vaguely recent memory in which festival summers from the mid-to-late 2010s were dominated by Dan Snaith's band-backed productions and innocent croons. Explosive at the time of its release, hits such as 'Can't Do Without U', 'All I Ever Need' and 'Dive' are now veritably etched into the public consciousness, and it all comes down to Snaith's spelt-out use of soul vocal samples and cleverly warm house production.

Review: Deluxe double CD reissues of the classic first two Manitoba albums, now re-branded as Caribou albums due to litigious US 'punk' rocker Dan Snaith. These groundbreaking albums will appear at a special price for a limited time. The two-disc 'Up In Flames' (originally released in 2003) will feature the same track list as the previous UK Special Edition of the album (which was released under the name Manitoba), but with new artwork. Includes tracks from the 'Jacknuggeted' and 'Hendrix With KO' EPs. These EPs have been for a long time deleted. These releases are in association with Domino US, to whom the albums are licensed for North America. Both albums appear in double jewel case packaging with full-colour slipcases.
