Um Balanco Pra Voce
Um Balanco Pra Voce (limited 7")
Cat: BRZ 45098. Rel: 16 Dec 22
Os Rouxinois - "Um Balanco Pra Voce" (2:52)
Wal Sant'ana - "O Viajante" (3:09)
Review: It was the iconic Copacabana Records that put out this classic MPB back in 1964. That makes 'Um Balanco pra voce' by Os Rouxinois one of the oldest releases in Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series and it is also one of the best. Arnaud Rodrigues wrote the tune which is a superb mix of exotic funk, bossa nova rhythms and quirky melodies from a five-track 7" of tunes that the band originally used to play on TV. On the other side, 'O Viajante' is the sort of irresistibly sunny sound that quickly wins your heart and is sure to light up any dancefloor.

Jose Prates - "Nana Imboro" (4:28)
Wroblewski Jazz Quintet - "Nana Imboro" (3:15)
Review: The 62nd single in Mr Bongo's long-running Brazil 45s series is notable for containing Jose Prates' "Nana Imboro", a deep, hypnotic and intoxicating samba cut that was initially recorded and released way back in 1958. Relatively slow and steady by samba standards, its chanted refrain is thought to be the inspiration for Jorge Ben's much better known "Mas Que Nada". Wisely, Mr Bongo has backed Prates' sublime original with a 1960 cover by obscure Polish outfit Wroblewski Jazz Quintet. This dispenses with the chanting, instead increasing the number of intertwined horn parts. Given that original copies of the rare Polish EP it first appeared on will set you back serious money, it's great to see this fine cover included here.

R308 (4:50)
Review: Osaka-based jazz-funk band Wa Yo Set is dropping this new 7" single as a way of offering fans a sneak peek of another new album project they have coming up this year. The A-side features a jazzy, acoustic, and danceable instrumental cover of MISIA's 'Tsutsumikomu Youni,' which has been skilfully reimagined in the band's signature style. On the B-side, the original track 'R308' delivers a breezy summer vibe and closes out a tasty release that showcases the band's ever-evolving sound. It has more than got us interested in hearing the full length that is soon to come.

Airport Love Theme (2:43)
Afro Sam (2:59)
Review: Waldir Calmon's 'Airport Love Theme' has that special appeal that makes it a true gem. Sampled by Madlib on the Madvillain album track 'Curls', this lounge classic from Calmon's 1970 Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons LP on Copacabana exudes nostalgic charm. Despite its unassuming cover, 'Airport Love Theme' delivers a dreamy, feel-good vibe that could soundtrack a perfect world. Afro Son, from the same album, shifts towards a Brazilian-rooted, cinematic groove, reminiscent of Jean Jacques Perrey's E.V.A.. Calmon, a Brazilian music fixture from the 50s to the 80s, who collaborated with legends like Tom Jobim and Joao Gilberto and left a unique musical legacy that lives on in these timeless tracks.

Monterey (3:24)
Straight Love Affair (3:35)
Review: Monterey was a previously lost track from Eden Ahbez, a soulful and almost sorrowful slow jam with sensational performances from Lee Pardini on piano and Mando Dorame on tenor sax. The vocals are hauntingly beautiful in contrast to the peppy organ lead 'Straight Love Affair' with its swing leanings. Waterhouse made his name in the Psych scene in California, though you can hear in 'Monterey' that he still keeps his blues sensibilities about him, and this is another welcome addition to the growing pantheon of tributes to Ahbez's material - a much appreciated display of recognition to songwriting brilliance. Just let the wave of sound wash over you.

Review: A unique slice of classic library music flies off the shelf. These four tracks were lifted from the classic library music series known only as 'Sounds Music Album Volume 18', and were made by the library maestro Klaus Weiss, the former jazz drummer who later turned to the trade after falling in with German music publisher Ring Musik. An eerie uncanniness cuts across these instrumentals, as Weiss' drumming provides steady boppage to serene yet dubious backings of strings and synth.

Review: This great series from Dynamite Cuts continues to delve deep into the alluring world of library music. It is sound that captures real feelings and evokes all sorts of memories, even those that are imagined, with a single note or seductive groove. This collection is made of tracks from the German Library series Sound Music Albums which sell for over L150 if you can find a copy. Message From A Black Man (2:44)
Review: The Whatnauts are best known for their evergreen classic 'Help Is On The Way', but they've got a mighty fine catalogue which goes deeper and further than just that tune. Here Dynamite Cuts gather up three essentials and press them to a 7" for your convenience, leading in with 1972's 'Why Can't People Be Colours Too?' from the Whatnauts On The Rocks album. When the break drops, you'll fully understand why it got picked - pure understated perfection. 'Souling With The Whatnauts' and 'Message From A Black Man' are both taken from 1970s Introducing The Whatnauts, offering up a more mellow, reflective side of this cult Baltimore group.

Review: Chip Wickham's cosmic spiritual jazz album Blue to Red gets some key remixes here on the Spanish label Lovemonk. 'Blue To Red Photay' (remix) is a bustling, club ready tune with a majestic flute lead and pumping drums. The no drums mix is a perfectly swirling ambient piece that is richly layered and joyous. Then comes 'The Cosmos Chip' (dub) which suspends you amongst the stars, lush flutes and deep bass notes while your mind wanders free. Last of all, 'Blue To Red Medlar' (remix) is another warm and succulent house groove with jazz stylings and airy harps all brings lightness and hope.

He worked with the Wynton Kelly Trio back in the mid-sixties and that is when he played a set at the famed Half Note jazz club in New York City with drummer Jimmy Cobb and bassists Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Herman Wright and Larry Ridley. The Tribe label - run of course by the pair themselves - it came on was also one of the great of its era in the 1970s. As bringing overseas artists to the UK grows increasingly difficult, this record bridges cultural and generational gaps while capturing the vibrant energy of live collaboration post-Covid-19. Conceived by Waaju bandleader Ben Brown, the album features his expansive arrangements of traditional Gnawa songs and blends Bekkas' musical prowess with Waaju's signature grooves and trippy delays. Bekkas, a key figure in Moroccan Gnawa music, had never collaborated with a UK band until this project. Alouane, meaning "colours" in Arabic, reflects the seven integral colours of Gnawa music, each invoking different spirits.

They are a virtuoso collective who drop the first two of the three, Moonlight Echoes and Starlight Reflections, on the same day at the end of December while the third, Pure, comes in early spring. This album is another masterful mix of romantic jazz sounds, gentle tinkling piano keys and sublime sophisticated lunge sounds that allow the mind to wander up amongst the stars. Cedar Walton was on piano, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bob Berg on tenor saxophone, Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums and between them they had a finely tuned jazz sound that brought to life six strong tracks, all composed by Cedar Walton bar their jazz interpretation of the classic standard 'Never Never Land.' The dynamic interplay between the musicians makes this a tight, impactful collection.

Review: Jazz Room Records is back with another high class reissue of an album that is considered to be a grail by those who know. The story goes that back in the late 70s in the Seattle area of the Pacific North West, Danny Ward & Reality were an oft called upon funky jazz collective for anyone throwing college or hardcore funk parties. Rather than just serving up covers of the day's big hits they offered proper musical trips though more considered fair from artists like George Benson. This album catches them at their best on one such mid-week gig in the summer of 1977.

Review: Kamasi Washington's latest effort is a little different from his previous releases, which delighted in taking spiritual and post-bop jazz in a myriad of thrilling new directions. Befitting its status as a soundtrack - the music on Becoming was written to feature on Nadia Hallgren's Netflix documentary of the same name on Michelle Obama - the compositions unveiled by Washington are breezy, accessible and seeped in musical positivity. There are lots of memorable melodic themes throughout the album, with bold and catchy, up-beat jazz numbers being joined by melancholic, contemplative compositions and even nods towards soul-jazz, Motown style soul and cheery jazz-funk.

Review: One day, Kamasi Washington will be heralded as a genuine musical genius. For now, he's just one of the artists of the moment - a jazz artist whose take on the genre is so wide-ranging and forward-thinking that it defies categorisation. On Fearless Movement, his follow-up to the dazzling and mind-blowing Earth (2015) and Heaven & Earth (2018), Washington heads for the dancefloor, combining his usual jazz, classical and soul influences with lashings of P-funk colour, raps aplenty, and impressive cast-list of guest stars. Andre 3000 reaches for his flute on the decidedly cosmic 'Dream State', old pals Thundercat, Taj Austin and Ras Austin step forth on the brilliant 'Asha The First', and George Clinton and rapper D Smoke light up 'Let's Get Lit'. He even doffs a cap to d&b on future jazz-dance classic 'Prologue'. Immense.

Review: Virtuoso contemporary jazz star Kamasi Washington got involved with the hit Netflix documentary Becoming right at the early stages. The film is a four time Emmy-nominated glimpse into the life of Michelle Obama, filled with as many profound moments as tender and vulnerable ones. All of those are perfectly translated into gentle jazz, sweeping symphonies and empowering passages of sound that tell a very real story even without seeing the movie. Fans of the Los Angeles saxophonist will recognise a dialling back in the scale of his usual sound, but that is never to the detriment of the work here, which is maybe his most accessible work yet.

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter is the most well-known of the band's members and after starting out as an experimental and free improvising outfit they eventually got more funky and edgy with hints of r&b creeping into their sound. The band always made use of the layettes synth technology and were one of the defining acts of the jazz era of their time as a result. Their eighth album, 1978's Mr Gone, is one of their most loved and ended up at Number 1 on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart.

Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day. It sodas as good now as ever on this nice heavyweight vinyl pressing.

The powerhouse group delivered the intensity of a big band while blending intricate musicianship with electrifying energy and their Night Passage tour, famous for its dynamic visuals with lasers and projections, was the band at their best. Well this is one to add to the list as, in 1975, Sarah Webster Fabio offered up a fourth and final album for Folkways in which her vivid musical language and distinctive voice are seamlessly interwoven with exploratory jazz sounds. Along the way she pays tribute to Coltrane as well as fellow Black jazz and blues musicians such as Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. The album is being reissued now as part of the label's 75th birthday celebrations and what a record it is to add to your shelves.

Review: Not to be confused with Klaus WeiB, the East Germany-born handball hero of the Summer Olympics 1972, although born in the same era, this Klaus Weiss is in fact the man who started out as a jazz drummer before expanding his remit to other instruments and genres, winding up pretty prolific in the world of movie and TV scores. As can be heard here.

While not directly linked to, taken from, or inspired by screen work, Open Space underscores (ahem) many of the same totems. It's un-rushed, yet tracks are relatively brief, not much more than interludes. Each feels similar to the next, but they clearly invoke very different emotional responses. Somewhere between synth-laden fantasy soundtracks of yore, and medieval court music, it's like going into the future only to realise civilisation has gone backwards while retaining some of its tech prowess.

Review: Norwegian pianist and composer Bugge Wesseltoft, a jazz innovator known for the diversity of his sound, is back with 'Am Are,' which is an expressive exploration of many sonic textures and dynamic contrasts. This album showcases Wesseltoft's inspiring collaborations with a constellation of superb musicians who bridge generations and styles. From sparse arrangements to complex layers of dubs and loops, Am Are highlights the power of human connection through improvisational interplay. Wesseltoft's curated selection demonstrates his passion for projects that spark creativity and celebrate the beauty of musical communication and make another fine addition to his catalogue.

Review: Ken Wheeler was a musician who was more than well schooled in the conventions of charts and dance bands. But for this project he cut loose and show a more improvisational skill and free will to go off-grid It's his debut album and was recorded with the John Dankworth Orchestra featuring a young John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass and various other talents who all helped make this such a fine example of modern jazz, big band and orchestral styles. Tunes like 'Propheticape' swell and build to tune peaks before all energy is dissipated and the trumpet is left to rebuild. 'Altisidora' is more quiet and subtle with oboes and gelt percussion setting the mood. 'Bachelor Sam' is a wandering wonder. Lovely.

Review: Amanda Whiting released her first music back in 2007, but it's been in recent years the accomplished UK harp player has developed a working relationship with Jazzman. N doubt a response to the rude health of UK jazz, 2020 saw the release of Little Sunflower and last year she delivered After Dark. Now Whiting makes it a hat trick with Lost In Abstraction, a stunning release which shows off her gift as a performer and composer across 10 vignettes. There's a mellow mood to the music on offer here, and if you have a weakness for the lilting sound of the harp in a jazz context, be sure not to miss this exquisite album.

Review: Last spotted cavorting with his Nirvana-covering side project Blue Mode and previous operating as Kid Costa, killer flautist and composer Chip Wickham (real name Roger) delivers his debut LP on Lovemonk. Ranging from gentle wave lapping spiritualism of tracks such as "Tokyo Slow Mo" and the cinematic "Pushed Too Far" to much more frenetic, energetic cuts like "Le Leyenda Del Tiempo" by way of funkier, lolloping grooves like "The Detour", it's a beautiful, vibrant snapshot of Wickham's skills that will grow as the months get warmer. Stunning.

Review: American jazz drummer Tony Williams rose to acclaim as a member of Miles Davis' so-called 'Second Great Quintet'. He later went on to pioneer jazz fusion with the group and formed his own outfit, the Tony Williams Lifetime. In 1986 he released 'Civilization', which marked a triumphant return to Blue Note and a great window into his visionary approach to jazz. Leading a stellar acoustic quintet with Wallace Roney (trumpet), Billy Pierce (sax), Mulgrew Miller (piano) and Charnett Moffett (bass), Williams served up a dynamic set of original compositions that pulse with intensity and technical brilliance, as well as emotional depth, while taking post-bop tradition into new relays. Each player brings sharp improvisational insight, but it's Williams' explosive yet precise drumming that anchors the session.

Review: Amy Winehouse - The BBC Sessions captures the raw brilliance of the late British singer during her most formative years and across some magical sessions for the Beeb. The album compiles live performances from various radio shows, each of which showcases Winehouse's soulful voice and magnetic stage presence, and all recorded between 2004 and 2009. The sessions feature stripped-back renditions of her iconic tracks like 'Rehab' and 'Love Is A Losing Game' as well as covers that highlight her deep musical roots in jazz and soul. This is a fine behind-the-scenes look at the great artistry and emotion of one of the greats of the last 50 years.

Review: The late, great and still sorely missed Amy Winehouse performed one of her famously absorbing live shows at Presqu'île de Malsaucy, Belfort, France for the Eurockeennes de Belfort Festival on June 29th 2007. Four years before her death, it was when she was quite possibly in the form of her life, before her battles with addiction and mental health woes truly took hold and she was able to dig into her emotional reserves and translate that through the mic. That means her renditions of the likes of her own classic tracks 'Back To Black', 'Valerie' and 'Rehab' have rarely sounded better.

Review: Almost 15 years after her tragic death and admission to the ill-fated '27 club', it's impossible not to tear up when thinking about Amy Winehouse. The untimely loss of such an incredible talent is one thing, gradually understanding that nobody caught and held such a vulnerable person in their time of need is what really hits the hardest. Back to Black, Sam Taylor-Johnson's biographical drama about the UK singer-songwriter and musician's rise to stardom, and the fallout, was never going to be an easy watch, then. As if we needed any more proof, the soundtrack really emphasises just how timeless Winehouse was as an artist. Highlights from her own incredible output are here - 'What Is It About Men', 'Stronger Than Me', 'Valerie', '(There Is) No Greater Love', the list could go on - as are some of the most evocative and captivating soul, blues and r&b tracks of the 20th Century. And there's nothing to separate these from each other, sonically, lyrically, or emotionally. We weren't worthy, and maybe never will be

Review: Stevie Wonder's seminal The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie album very much unveiled the budding talent of a musical prodigy. Released in 1962, this instrumental collection showcases Wonder's early mastery of jazz-infused melodies at the tender age of just 12 years old. With his harmonica prowess and soulful organ touches frost and centre, Wonder paints vivid tracks that belie his youth. Pieces like 'Fingertips' and 'Square' exude a playful energy, while 'Soul Bongo' delves into rhythmic complexity. Despite its brevity, the album foreshadows Wonder's illustrious career and undeniably set the stage for his future triumphs on Motown and beyond. It's a captivating glimpse into the early genius of a music icon.

Review: Often touted as a "masterpiece of jazz-funk live albums," The Wooden Glass's 1972 live recording proves it's more than just hype. Featuring vibraphonist Billy Wooten who previously played with Grant Green, this record was recorded at Indianapolis' The 19th Hole club and captures the essence of fusion driven by soulful 60s influences. Wooten's gentle melodies contrast with the gritty, distorted sound of Harold Cardwell's powerful drumming and Emmanuel Riggins' Hammond organ while the energetic performance from the band, including guitarist William Roach, creates a tapestry of intensity and dreamlike vibes. It's raw, electrifying, high-energy jazz.

Review: This hefty collaborative album sees Empirical founding member and skilled vibes man Lewis Wright join forces with two flight New York musicians Matt Brewer on double bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums. They cook up tight, exceptionally well performed tunes that have a title which describe how the music was composed. It's an album of improv lead by emotions and gut feelings rather than technique first and foremost. Bar closer 'Brilliant Corners' a tune by Thelonious Monk, these are all original compositions and all excellent.

Wes was said to be one of the best live performers in the game and this is real evidence of that - it finds him at the heights of his brilliant and influential guitar playing and is a record that captures him playing with more drive and confidence than ever. Smokin' Wynton Kelly does a fine job of supporting on this most accomplished and essential record.
