Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Review: Whereas most record label prefer to revel in the idea of the finished project, a smaller cohort still prefers to play up the idea of the cutting room floor, the dubplate, the manuscript, the demo. Whilst dubstep might've revived the dubplates trend for a more contemporary listener, US imprint Disco Dub Demos (how apt) know all too well that of the earliest forms of this "rawness fetishism" in music emerged from disco. Here the label-born moniker African Duplate lays down four ultra-utilitarian tools that shoot squarely for the essence of - they name it - 'Afro Disco'. On the B-side also comes a worthy, somewhat haunting flip track, 'Come On & Groove It'.

Review: After the roaring success of his last outing here, the '3 Woman EP,' Art Of Tones is back on GAMM with a 12" that brings male ovals to the fore. They are all very different in style but all highly effective. 'International Truth' opens with strident and funky disco drums and noodling guitar lines with soulful tones lighting up the beats. 'Don's Expensive Afro' is a rework of a rare Afro-disco track with more expressive vocals instructing the floor to move. Review: ATA Records, camped out in Leeds, formed in 2014 by Neil Innes in a formerly disused garage on the outskirts of town. Described as an "Aladdin's Cave of vintage 1960s recording equipment", we've little intel on how exactly Innes chanced upon ownership of such a stockpile, but what we do know is that he soon set about recording these songs exclusively to 2" tape, and using mid-century recording techniques to yield that ever-so-knowable vintage crunch, so native to 60s and 70s funk, soul and soundtrack music. Perhaps a somewhat fictive alias, Kaunas Baltic Connect and the Sorcerers are two such tributary acts to the library archives of yore (KPM, Cavendish, Burton, etc.), and here they lay down 'Baby, I Don't Care' and 'Kaunas Baltic Connect', two fervent fracases packing riffy synth leads and seat-edge strings, nodding to the "brooding menace of Poliziotteschi and Euro-crime movies".

Review: Legendary Brazilian jazz-funk trio Azymuth drop their latest record 'Arabuta', pointing themselves in a new cardinal direction in sound. The limited 7" brings two new mix version of their recently released 'Arabuta' to the fold, both by fellow producer and Azymuth collaborator Daniel Maunick. Part-dancefloor, part-dub, both versions bring preservative tones, fully circling the resinous Brazilwood tree after which the track is named. Review: When British prog rock band Babe Ruth recorded 'The Mexican' - a low-slung funk-rock workout that came complete with weighty bass and killer drum breaks - they could have had no idea of the impact it would have during the block party phase of hip-hop's evolution (or, for that matter, that Jellybean Benitez would record a Latin hip-hop cover in the early 80s). It's the track's significance within hip-hop that inspired these revisions from break-digger Mister Mushi. Both of the producer's 'Special Edit' versions - vocal on the A-side, instrumental on the flip - make the most of the track's prototype hip-hop breaks, restless bassline and Latin-tinged fuck-rock guitar licks. They're basically the breaker-friendly revisions the dancers want and need.

Review: Germany's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band's profile skyrocketed in 2024 when their hypnotic steel pan cover of 50 Cent's 'Pimp' became a surprise emotional core in the Oscar-winner Anatomy Of A Fall. So pivotal was the track that steel pans would here make their first ever Academy Awards orchestra debut. But for longtime heads, 'Pimp' first turned heads in 2008, where it was pressed on Bjorn Wagner's Mocambo label and was often mistaken afterwards for a 50s sample source. The 'Big Crown Vaults' series now swoops in to save and preserve the group's best contributions to the music world, in addition to and in excess of the 'Pimp' version. A true archive-delving if we've ever heard one, the tracks so preserved include Bob James' breakbeat classic 'Nautilus' and a thunderous take on Khruangbin's 'Maria Tambien'. Then there's the B's funked-up flips of the Jackson 5 and Billy Jones, plus one original, 'Kaiso Noir'.

Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Review: Mike Bandoni's new outing on Village Live Records is a super good drum outing that has been doing the rounds amongst some top-tier funk DJs. Bandoni is a talented multi-instrumentalist and is also the former drummer for the Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band so knows his sound inside out. Opener 'Kool Trippin' is an uptempo classic with energy to get any floor going. On the flip is another bit of pure bait for B-boys and girls with irresistible funk breaks and catchy hooks. Both tracks are taken from 'Rhodium Breaks' and come in limited quantities.

Review: The riffing 'Latin Strut' by Joe Bataan, colloquially known as the "King of Latin Soul", was first released in 1974. This was an early joint outing between specialist Latin music pushers Mericana Records and RCA Victor; having already earned his name as a releaser of many a gold-rimmed, inner-labelled 7" record, Bataan was well into his acetates and LPs game by the point of his comeup in Spanish Harlem, New York. Backed as it was in '74 by 'Peace, Friendship & Solidarity', a waltzing song dedicated to the plight of Berliners during the Cold War, the star funk-samba shuffle 'Latin Strut' contrasts as a sizzling solicitation of descending contrapuntal piano and Quena fluting pizzazz.

Review: An intriguing song is 'Aftershower Funk', the Latin American musician Joe Bataan's curt salsa single from 1974. Fresh, cologned, groomed, and with towel firmly wrapped round hair, Bataan's largely instrumental track is about as lightfooted as the sprightly young man he was, then at 34 years old. With heavy tin drum and cowbell clangings peppered throughout, a toe-tapping mood is sure to beset the listener. B-sider 'Fin' continues the mood, uniting percussion with piano, brass, whistle and rhythm guitar; a much fuller exercise in triumphant finality.

Review: The BDQ duo were in the studio 25 years ago working on these tracks but never quite finished them due to life changes like marriage and kids. Recently, while revisiting old tapes, they discovered a lost tape and decided to give it another listen. They liked what they heard and after a bit of effort to transfer the tracks, they now feel the time has come for a vinyl release. Side 1 features their version of Timebox's 'Beggin'' with vocals by Sarah Orpen and Bryn Barklam laying down some killer Hammond sounds. Review: The new Bishop 88 imprint hits gold from the off here as they offer up an edit of 'Last Night Changed It All' by Esther Williams, a track famously sampled by numerous artists like Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy. It is a drum-heavy version of a funky tune with conversational melodies and blissful soul vocals next to swooning strings. On the flip is an edit of 'I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Baby' - originally by Kellee Patterson - which itself is a rendition of Barry White's original.
