Cat: DYNAM 7088YELLOW. Rel: 26 Jan 21
What's Shakin (4:43)
Much Too Much (3:58)
Review: 9th Creation's Superheros album was a treasure trove of soulful disco tunes that have since become hard to find and ever more desirable. Now the Dynamite Cuts 45s Series has two of the gems from it on this special new 7". It's the first time there a-side has been on its own piece of vinyl and that tune 'Whats Shakin' goes first. It's gloriously glossy and high quality disco with funky horns and big bass, a lush vocal hook and luxuriant sound. 'Much Too Much' is on the reverse and is another floor facing disco tune with a heart swelling vocal and smooth chords that can often fetch L150 on its own.

Life's Too Short (3:47)
Blame Game (3:48)
Review: New funk and soul grooves from Adesha and Vincent Kwok, the Italian vocalist and production duo responsible for a rain-made string of releases on Sleepers Records. 'Life's Too Short' and 'Blame Game' are infectious, talkboxing punchers; the former hears a muted guitar solo in its sultry breakdown, as if to say "don't be afraid of anything that stands in your way", while 'Blame Game' continues to deal with the tumult of difficult relationships, aiming to mood-set your next party with frank DX7 chords and 909s. This split single comes to a limited pink vinyl 7" and picture cover, and is limited to just 150 copies.

Girl Fun (3:39)
Review: Adesha and Vincent Kwok come together once more for a new transmission that takes its stylistic cues from "the glittering dance floors of the disco era to Minneapolis-inspired funk." These are lush tunes with gorgeous backing vocals, fine sax sounds and irresistible drums. First is 'Hot Mess' which is a classic disco workout with pumping drums and nice loos percussion under the soaring vocals and cosmic synth rays. 'Girl Fan' has a sizzling sax solo and describes the stages of fandom over punchy beats. This is the third collab from this pair on The Sleepers Record label.

Rivers (4:52)
Review: Here comes a second release on a mysterious unknown label from someone known as Admin, who has previously landed on a VA on Banoffee Pies. That was a deep house track but these two are very much lush and summery disco vibes. 'Halo' opens up with the sort of open-air Mediterranean gorgeousness that has you picturing yourself sipping cocktails by a twinkling ocean in the late afternoon sun. 'Rivers' then picks up the pace a little but remains awash with musicality and soul-stirring chords over organic, loose drums. Perfect stuff.

Review: Not just a beautiful compliment to pay someone special, but a hugely influential record that inspired Floating Points' now legendary Plastic People parties, too... A super obscure and expensive one at that. Now re-issued on Floating Points' own Melodies imprint - across three 45s - the Detroit band get full exposure with the deliciously funky main track enjoying two versions before dipping into the softer, more pastoral charms of "I Feel Like Dancing" and the string-led swoon festival, "Theme For Someone Special". We close on two contrasting grooves; an earthy ballad ("Trust Me") and a Whitfield & Strong style funk instrumental ("Dance Awhile"). Cheers Sam!

Review: Of all of the tracks that seemed to define the soul, funk and disco revival lead by Floating Points and his co-run Melodies International label, it is the title track off this albumfrom Aged in Harmony. It was a real anthem for the multi-hour DJ sets at Plastic People, for his cult-ish NTS shows and the parties he played to record obsessives all over the world. And it's easy to see why - the steamy sax, the classy strings, the hooky bass motifs and the lovely drums. Here it get served up twice, along with a load more tunes that include sentimental steppers like 'I Feel Like Dancing' and the lush Balearic melodies of 'Theme For Someone Special.'

Dreamtime Trance Theme (Respectfully extended) (8:50)
Review: 'Dreamtime Trance' is a cult gem for those who like to dig deep, and Alston Koch is exactly that person. She is a Sri Lankan-born Australian musician and the mastermind behind the Kookaburra Connection project, a collaboration with Aboriginal musicians, and this track blends indigenous themes with a unique, game-changing beat and infectious groove. It's a pure dancefloor revelation and this reissue includes a new extended version with a longer intro buildup that adds depth to the track. On the B-side, the heartfelt ballad 'Midnight Lady' offers a contrasting mood that is perfect for after-hours relaxation with PiNa Coladas. Remastered and re-issued with the original artwork, this EP is a must.

Impressed at an early age by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones, Funkadelic, Muddy Waters, Edger Winters and the Yellow Magic Orchestra, he began playing in various r&b and funk outfits. A Trip to India gave Altz a new interest in trance music. Since then he has seamlessly incorporated electric elements like techno and breakbeat into his music. The Ananda Project - "Cascades Of Colour" (DJ Kawasaki Slow Disco mix) (4:13)
Blaze - "We Are One" (DJ Kawasaki Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix) (4:15)
Review: DJ Kawasaki fires up his tools and gets to work on a couple of tasty new edits here. The first is a slow disco mix of The Ananda Project's 'Cascades Of Colour' which is lush, low riding and built on loopy drums with silky synths that are finished with some sprinkles of cosmic melody up top. Sublime. Blaze's 'We Are One' then gets a special Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix which has more astral synth work ringing out from a tight and funk arrangement with lush bass lines and nice organic drums.

Review: A new Andermay release will always excited fans of retro-future disco sounds, Italo chords and nostalgic beats. This latest 12" on Blanco Y Negro kicks off with the unashamed throwback sounds of '1989' with its glistening keys and slivery drums. There is then big sentimental euro-dance sounds like 'Berlin' and the hi-nrg stepper that is 'La Antartida.' The final original is 'El Viaje Inesperado,' another rueful vocal layered over chilly 80s production and soppy chords. instrumentals of all three tunes are also included and are likely to find favour with most.

Review: After years in the vault, Andrea & Alexander are now set to shine in the real world once more. This nostalgic project founded by Andrea Noce and Alexander Arpeggio in 2014 was revitalised in 2023. Initially a live setup of synths and drum machines, it evolved into a collection of songs with minimal-wave grooves and haunting lyrics in English and German, kinda reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux and Gudrun Gut. Following a breakup, both pursued solo careers, with Andrea releasing music internationally and Alexander launching a label. Now, their timeless recordings have come back to public attention and arrive in the form of this vibrant album.

Review: This Vincent Arthur album is a tribute to his daughter Vivian and was crafted by talented musicians from Africa, the Caribbean and Germany. Once obscure for 30 years, its standout track, 'Travel With The Music' became an anthem after making a high-profile appearance in a Dekmantel set where its euphoric afro-disco sound really made a lasting mark. Online sleuths uncovered its origin which has reignited interest in this hidden gem, which has been remastered by Frank at The Carvery. It revives three key tracks in 'Travel With The Music' which shines with afro, disco, and gospel-like euphoria. 'Afro Disco' brings playful energy while 'Jubilation' closes the night with deep, celebratory vibes.

Review: Both of these funk gems are taken from a cult compilation Trans Groove Express, which explored the sounds of Express Records and was assembled by MURO. Fourth Wave now serve them up on a superb 7", starting with Maki Asakawa. 'Hohi Hitotsu' is a delightfully gentle and subtle dub with funky guitars adding movement while the sultry vocal soars. Yasuhiro Abe's 'Night Fish' is a brighter and more retro 80s soul and boogie sound with glowing chords and snappy hits. The Japanese language vocal is emotive enough to mean plenty without understanding the meaning of the words.

Review: This third volume of instrumentals continues the faultless Isle of Jura label's deep dive into dub versions and beyond. Side one takes in references from UK street soul and reggae and features two late-'80s tracks by Howard Hill with machine-led rhythms, rudeboy reggae skank and soulful pads. Protek's 'I Love to Dance With You' is a proto-house gem featured in a Jura Soundsystem mix and here it gets a loving re-edit by The Nightlark. Side B includes an instrumental-driven track with spacey FX from The Cool Notes' and Ilija Rudman's 'Dub 4 Love' which is a knowing nod to acid house's golden era.

Review: Sandy Barber's 'I Think I'll Do Some Stepping (On My Own)' came as part of 'The Best Is Yet To Come', the singer's 1978 album epitomising her influence over the genre of disco-soul. Now two remixers, OPOLOPO and John Morales, lead the charge in fleshing ever more joy out of this righteous original. 'You think you're so smart, well you're mistaken', goes Barber's refrain, as OPOLOPO's rework brightens nearly element to gaussian overload. John Morales' version, meanwhile, is much more emotive and belting, happily laboured in its faux-unquantized production.

While the band may have had most of their time in the spotlight in the late 70s, they bowed out with a veritable bomb in the shape of Tittle Tattle, a tightly-wound, punchy slice of uptempo 80s boogie like they just can't make any more. Review: B. B. Seaton aka Harris Lee Seaton is one of those reggae vocalists who appeared on a dizzying amount of records. He has over 450 credits on Discogs and 22 albums. 'Dancing In The Moonlight' from 1986 is typical of his sound and brings an electronic feel to dub and reggae. An original will cost you the thick end of 200 quid so this reissue is well overdue. The A-side here is seven-plus minutes of reggae disco funk with a killer bassline, proto-house claps and back and forth vocals that just get the dancefloor going. A version and an instrumental close out the package, which arrives via Studio 1.

Review: Get your hips and heart around this bit of L.A. boogie by the elusive Ben White and you cannot help but feel better. It is a highly sought-after rarity that disco collectors have been fawning over since forever. It was originally reissued as a 45 by the great Athens of the North and now comes this 7" version which was sourced from Andy Noble, who has often helped the label out before. It features two sides of exceptional modern soul and boogie that blend rhythm and grove in magical ways that are never going to age. 'I See A World' has lovely and tender falsetto vocals and 'Give Me Love (Always)' is more of a party starter.

Let's Go (4:26)
Review: DJ Fryer's Athens of the North imprint has provided soul and disco DJs with some killer 7" reissues since launching earlier this year. Here, he uncovers another obscure but oh-so-good gem. There's little information available about Bileo, aside from the fact that they released just two singles between 1979 and '83. "You Can Win" was there debut. It's a deliciously loose and celebratory chunk of disco-soul featuring spellbinding horns and a cheery, wholeheartedly positive vocal. It's the sort of disco-soul gem that makes us want to hug complete strangers before running into the sea fully clothed. The more low-slung disco-funk flipside, "Let's Go", is almost as good. Recommended.

Review: Archeo Records are at it again with another fine curio from the hidden corners of Italian electronic music history. This time it's the turn of Blue Gas, a one-off electronic disco project from Celso Valli that originally came to light back in 1983. The title track is a sumptuous Balearic diggers dream, all airy pads and laid back funk basslines. Elsewhere "Marie" is a surprisingly uptempo B-side, although here it's squeezed onto the A-side to make room for Manu Acheo's extended edit of "Shadows From Nowhere" which pleasingly drapes itself across the full spread of the B-side.

Review: Bohannon's biggest dancefloor hit, 'Let's Start II Dance Again', has been remixed umpteen times over the years, with several reworks of the slamming disco-funk classic released in the early-to-mid-1980s. Here it gets another new lease of life as part of Unidisc's 40th anniversary celebrations, with disco remix maestro Dimitri From Paris at the controls. The Frenchman delivers two tasteful, club-ready tweaks: an 'Extended Remix' that wisely utilises all of the familiar elements of Bohannon's original, while subtly beefing up the beats and adding a few drops and breakdowns, and an even longer, more dubbed-out 'Super Disco Blend' revision. Over on the flip there's a chance to enjoy Bohannon's original version and the raw and heavy 'Part 2' mix from 1981 album Alive.

It comes after many years of earning a fine rep for killer edits and originals and getting props from big wigs like Rahaan, Red Greg and DJ Nature amongst many others. Things kick off with 'The Sun' which starts with a cinematic bit of spoken word scene setting then turns into a nice and catchy deep disco jam before 'Egbe Mi O (edit)' is a more percussive hip swinger with funky bass riffs and great hand claps. Review: The Record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast right now, and this is another doozy that arrives in limited quantities. British artist Mark 'China' Burton left an indelible mark with his one and only ever release, which is this soulful disco masterpiece. Produced by Adam Sieff and unveiled on the Logo label in 1979, this string-laden gem remains highly coveted, with original 12" copies fetching over L400. The arrangement, crafted by the UK's John Altman, who later collaborated with icons like Diana Ross and Tina Turner, adds to its allure. Altman, known for his work on the iconic 'Walking In The Air' with Aled Jones, lends his expertise to this limited edition release.

Livin' Up (4:47)
Stop (6:45)
Review: House Of Music dig back into the annals of house history here and return with a glorious Italo disco cut from 1983. They have served it up on a nice slab of grey vinyl but really it should have been flaming red because the tunes are so damn hot. 'Livin' Up' has hazy, smeared vocals drifting in and out of the mix while the mid-tempo drums are embellished with hip swinging claps and bright chords that bring up tempo feels. Funky bass riffs make a fine appearance, too, while 'Stop' brings 80s sounds back to the fore with its phased bass and Italo arps. Two cuts that bring plenty of old school cool.

Review: Formed in 1973, Cake was a New York band that recorded only one 7" at Arabellum Studios in Colony, Albany. It proved a huge hit, making many appearances in DJ sets and mixes over the years, and then going on to fetch eye watering prices on second hand markets. It achieved holy grail status some time in the last decade and now has been remastered form the original tapes. The original 12" single is served up here with an instrumental version and the funky backside gem, 'Let Your Body Go.' This is timeless disco funk that will prove irresistible to all.

Review: CAL C (aka Callum Cockburn) has been building up to this for a while and now finally releases his debut EP, Spacedust EP, which it is fair to say is a dazzling addition to the dance world. Produced and pressed with precision at Mother Tongue in Verona, Toronto's rhythmic innovator shows his class with primal beats merged with futuristic sounds to make for a vibrant, forward-thinking musical experience. All five cuts explore slightly different sound worlds but all with equal class and style. A fine debut, with hopefully much more to come.

Cybernetic Love (Danilo Braca remix)
Review: Italo-disco classic alert! Recorded and released in 1983, 'Cybernetic Love' was the first of a string of Italo-era club hits from the late Salvatore Cusano AKA Casco - an undeniably the most impactful and timeless. On the A-side you'll find the original mixes: a sweet vocal version featuring lyrics seemingly about falling in love with a robot, and an instrumental tale in which Cusano and his collaborators' dreamy chords, sparkling synthesizer melodies, funky electro bass and unfussy machine drums come to the fore. Over on the flip you'll find a new remix from Danilo Braca. He wisely retains the feel of the original, adding a few clonking electronic bleeps and a more chugging groove, whilst retaining the sparkling melodies and immersive chords.

Review: Oceanic Zones is a brand new album on a brand new label. CCO is the artist and the fledgling label is Silum which is brought to us from the Liechtenstein Alps via Zurich. This is a stylish electro outing with elastic chords and silky pads that all, we are told, explore 'the layers of the sea.' The A-side is the more cheerful and represents the light-flowed upper regions of the ocean while the flip side is where things get darker and more menacing, as you would expect as you head down to the ocean floor.

Review: 'Photochrome' is a track that is shrouded in mystery. It has a rather elusive original release date, likely sometime between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and came on Italy's Idea which was a well-regarded label despite its small catalogue. Now reissued in full, the single exudes an organic aesthetic infused with early electronic elements that were emerging during that era. A brisk, pulsating groove is intertwined with what resembles an early 303 bassline and ethereal vocal. Dry drum recordings evoke a raw, DIY ambience next to the experimental effects that swirl and drift. A new two-part bonus beats remix is also included.

Review: Cetu Javu's iconic track 'Por Que?' (which as you probably can work out translates as why?) returns on a lovely grey marbled vinyl 12" courtesy of Blanco Y Negro Spain. A timeless classic from the late 80s and early 90s synth-pop and electronic scene, this single captures the band's signature blend of infectious melodies and emotive Spanish vocals. It's a fiery sound that is packed with melancholic undertones and driving rhythms that mean it has remained a dancefloor favourite for fans of vintage electronic sounds. This special edition offers a pristine homage to the era that takes you back in an instant.

Review: Cetu Javu's 'Dame Tu Mano' is something of a classic for lovers of early synth sounds and now it is back and reissued on grey marbled vinyl. Known for their blend of synthpop and Latin-inspired melodies, this track captures Cetu Javu's signature emotive style and irresistible sense of analogue rhythm. Originally a hit in the late 80s and early 90s, this fine single is a staple for fans of 80s beats and its great vocals also bring plenty of old-school vibes.

Review: Soanish mega-label Blanco Y Negro continues to reissue rather good, but frequently overlooked, gems from its vast archives. This one, from German-Spanish synth-pop band Cetu Javu, dates from 1992 and sees the combo combine their early Depeche Mode-esque vocals and synth sounds with nods to the more driving, peak-time ready sounds of European house music. That's best exemplified by the opening 'Remix' version of title track 'Dame Tu Mano', which also comes in the moody synth-pop style 'Extended Mix'. Over on the flip, we get the chiming melodies, mid-80s Pet Shop Boys grooves and Euro-dance bleeps of 'Una Mujer (remix)' and the Bobby Orlando-meets-Shep Pettibone fun of 'Tempo (remix)'.

Review: Adam Chini is described as "Prince if he grew up in Southern California" and this EP is all the convincing you need. It is packed with plenty of spaced out dream funk vibes and lush synth lines. 'Slide' is a talk box game with rigid rhythms and vocals light up by scintillating chords and squelchy bass. A First Touch remix follows and then come the sundown vibes of the Instrumental - its warm, disco-fried and perfectly seductive for early evening dances. The final First Touch instrumental mix closes down this crucial package.

Review: Vintage Pleasure Boutique is an excellently named label out of Poland that is fast approaching its 20th releases. This latest 12" is another dazzling Italo disco gem that arrives on translucent yellow vinyl. Claudia T.'s 'Fatal Destination' arrived originally back in 1989 at the height of the genre's popularity and very much takes you back there with its cold but compelling synth sounds and crashing drums, all very reminiscent of the era. The soaring vocals brings the glorious hook next to zippy lead synths. This was a bit hit back in the day and is sure to win over just as many global dancers second time around.
