Review: Part of a dedicated reissues campaign of much of Japanese funk and prog instrumentalist Masayoshi Takanaka's discography, we're now privy to one of the best records within it: the esteemed, sensitively embellished, and patently instrumental super-opus, All Of Me. The only compilation record to be reissued as part of the series, All Of Me was first put out in the same period as the early treats Brasilian Skies and Jolly Jive, which sealed the deal on Takanaka's (successful) career, and saw to the unstoppably decades-long period of fun that followed, and more or less lasted until 2011. Intro'd superbly, and with a sense of amicable drama, we hear segues into 'Sweet Agnes' and 'Izu Amanatsu Natto Uri'; both are gateway drugs for atmospheric music enjoyers to get into funk, amping up the mood of ease, and building on Takanaka's self-fashioned surf scene adjacency.

Review: A specialist of short, exquisite instrumental funk records, Masayoshi Takanaka laid this sweet, yearning, yachtbound record down in 1979, following the previous year's Latin sojourn, Brasilian Skies. This slice of jollity sacrifices much of Takanaka's regional focus, and instead brings seven rather more generally awesome, mostly instru-prog-funk tunes to the fore (even though 'Radio Rio' still alludes to Brazil's home city, where Takanaka spent much time honing the samba and bossa nova influences that informed his craft, as well as performing). Lead tune 'Blue Lagoon' is noted for catapulting Takanaka's career after it was taken up by Pioneer for a TV ad; ambient heads would likely contest this history, arguing that the later ambient cut 'Sango-sho No Yousei' is the star tune, and the one that should've won him the limelight.

Review: First out in 1975 on Nippon Columbia, Funky Stuff stamped the seal on Jiro Inagaki's jazz rock period - and what a finale. With pianist Hiromasa Suzuki handling writing and arrangement, the album leans hard into punchy psych, fuzzwacked guitar, rubbery bass, brass stabs and whip-tight drums; Suzuki conducts things sharply and melodically, steering Soul Media into tighter territory. Inagaki, who'd previously led The Soul Mates and His Black Rhythm Machine, praised Suzuki's knack for bold ideas and memorable phrasing, a quality clearly running through this set. The sound is tight and bright; less freeform jam, more focused funk workout, catching 70s Japanese jazz as it shimmies in Cuban motion toward the dancefloor.

Review: The undoable Coffy (1973) is a landmark blaxploitation film, directed by Jack Hill and starring legendary actor Pam Grier in her breakthrough role. Grier plays a nurse who turns vigilante to fight drug dealers and corruption in her community, blending affective grit and cool unapologetics to signal the tide of black woman empowerment. The film helped define the blaxploitation genre, with Grier emerging as one of its most enduring figures: Vibes ledge Roy Ayers' soundtrack, now reissued here through Anagram, matches the determinateness of the film's message, its grip-tight funk jazz fusions forging a vibraphonic propellerhead against which Dee Dee Bridgewater's vocals might flow with the force of rapids. Review: The 31st release from Habbi Funk is a remarkable hoarde of gems from Libya's rich but largely unsung cassette culture. Rather than aiming for a definitive history, the album aims at a more personal curated journey through the country's underground music scenes from the late 80s to the early 00s, presenting a compelling mosaic of disco, reggae, pop, house and funk, tracing the evolution of a exciting sonic identity forged under the radar. The compilation draws from hundreds of tapes sourced across North Africa, including recordings salvaged from the now-demolished TK7 cassette factory in Tunisia and a marathon digitisation session in a Cairo hotel room in 2021. It features previously highlighted artists such as Ahmed Ben Ali, Cheb Bakr and Najib Alhoush alongside lesser-known but no less vital acts like Khaled Al Melody, Fathi Aldiyqz & Sons of Africa Band, City Lights Band, Libya Music Band and Group Hewaya. These artists worked within and often around political and technical constraints, recording in makeshift home studios or traveling abroad to lay down tracks. Their music reflects Libya's diverse cultural geography, blending Arab melodies with African rhythms and reggae's defiant swagger. Reggae, especially, emerges with a distinct local inflection, carrying both sonic innovation and social resonance.
This creativity was made possible through the power of community-led archiving. It captures a time when music was passed hand to hand and genre boundaries blurred into something entirely new and unmistakably Libyan.

Review: Taeko Ohnuki's second album Sunshower first broke in July 1977, hastening the evolution of city pop even before it developed the name. With the mythic Ryuichi Sakamoto enlisted for musical direction, the record married J-pop, smooth jazz, and rock, as 'Summer Connection', 'Tokai', and 'Kusuri Wo Takusan' fleshed out and diffracted Ohnuki's introspective lyrics and melodic sensuality. Despite only modest initial commercial success, Sunshower garnered critical acclaim over time for its sophisticated arrangements, standing out and tall among a thick canopy of similarly flighty-slick city pop records, most of which lack that extra Sakamoto *something*.

Review: By 1973, Soul Media, formed in Tokyo by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki, had spent a good many years blurring the lines of jazz and rock, of course in what we Westerners would interpret as distinctive "J import" style. With In the Groove, their studio output took a decisive leap, injecting a tighter funk sensibility into an already well oiled jazz membrane. Refusing to mimic the overseas jazz-funk scene, Inagaki and his band offered their own take: confident, dynamic and layered with a distinctly Japanese stance on groove and arrangement. The Crusaders' influence looms large, where Inagaki was closely following their evolution. But this isn't aphonic pastiche; the record finds its own voice in its interplays of brass and rhythm, with 'That's How I Feel' causing a slow trickle then downpour of funktastic piano-funk flections to come, such as 'Joie De Vivre', 'Papa Hooper's Barrel House Groove' and the brilliantly corvine 'Raven Speaks'.

Review: Tokyo's DJ Notoya turns his ear to the Victor archives for this latest deep dive into overlooked 80s grooves, following the cult acclaim of his Tokyo 1980s mix CD: a street-level selection of Japanese disco, boogie and modern soul, of course immediately precipitative of international traction. This LP is the second to follow up that first, released in 2018, and scopes out the modern Invitation label (a new city pop sublabel of Victor Japan), studding a sleek strew of low-key gems from the past decade's obscurer corners. The artwork by Hiroshi Nagai resembles a digital needlepoint piece (a great contradiction), and the music is as city-slicking as it can get, with Naomi Akimoto's opener 'Bewitched' leaving us without a second guess as to the quality of what is to come.

Review: A high-gloss Abbey Road remaster and LITA reissue brings Masayoshi Takanaka's kaleidoscopic The Rainbow Goblins the treatment it deserves. Originally released in 1981 as his seventh studio album, it's one of the Toyko jazz fuser's most eccentric works, riffing on Ul De Rico's surrealist children's book of the same name (and with an allusive accompanying illustration). The result is a prog-fusion fantasia thick with swirling guitar lines and orchestral flourishes, reissued here on 180g clear purple vinyl to mirror the dreamlike palette of the sleeve. This edition forms part of a trio of remastered classics, alongside T-Wave and Alone, also cut at Abbey Road by Alex Wharton.

Review: French composer Michel Colombier's 1973 score returns in full force via Paris-based label Transversales Disques. Known for his outre hybrids and collaborative range, Colombier here locks into a particularly lush, cinematic strain of space-funk and downtempo psych. 'L'heritier', 'L'usine' and 'Kidnapping' pulse with wah-heavy guitars and serpentine Rhodes work, driven by a heavyweight rhythm section featuring Jannick Top and Claude Engel. There's something of Lalo Schifrin's cool undercurrent to the grooves, but Colombier leans more into mood than motif-letting restraint do the heavy lifting. The B-side takes a turn toward occult atmospheres with selections from his rare 'Tarot' score, including the eerie synth-led 'Incantation' and closing tension spiral of 'Tarot'. There's a kind of smoked-out paranoia across pieces like 'Blind Luck' and 'Reading The Cards', balanced by playful moments such as the loping clavinet of 'Doggie Style'. The inclusion of five unreleased cues only deepens the trip. This is vivid, textural music that glows with analogue heat and open-studio experimentation-jazz, prog, funk and giallo-noir threaded into a loose, hypnotic whole. Reissued with care, and rightly so. A gift for fans of vintage library sleaze and haunted groove.

Review: Frank Popp Ensemble's fourth album, Waves, arrives via Unique Records, building on an eccentric "one-man concept" project that has enjoyed close to two decades of Northern soul vibe recreating. Review: A reissue of this 1973 album is an overdue appreciation for his work as a solo artist. While his legacy often centers on shaping careers like Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan and George Benson, Quincy Jones also redefined what it meant to be a producer, arranger and composer in the spotlight. In this album, he took inspiration from some of his most favorite artists and productions of the day and converted them to his own. The album's first half is lush and mellow led by smooth renditions of tracks by Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Though bordering on easy listening, these interpretations are elevated by meticulous orchestration and flashes of Jones's own tentative vocals. A highlight, 'Summer in the City' he transforms the Lovin' Spoonful's urban pop tune into a slow-burning, sultry jazz-funk groove featuring Valerie Simpson. A track instantly recognizable by the countless hip-hop samples, notably The Pharcyde's 'Passin' Me By'. The second half of the album is more upbeat, funkier and more playful. 'Superstition' shines with contributions from Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers and Billy Preston. 'Manteca' sizzles with jazz firepower, while the interesting TV themes 'Sanford & Son' and 'Chump Change' close the set with swagger and now, nostalgia.

Review: The New Jersey group's fourth studio album marked a turning point: a dazzling fusion of streetwise funk and glossy r&b that would catapult Kool & The Gang into mainstream orbit. Review: From Marseille, DJ Marrrtin and Deheb return with a break-heavy jazz-funk weapon that nods to blaxploitation cinema, dusty library cuts and 90s beat tape aesthetics. Cuts like 'The Punch' and 'Funktionaries' come laced with classic breakdance flair, built around taut snares and wiry guitar stabs, while 'Tambourine'-featuring Boston's Saucy Lady-adds shimmering disco sparkle to the mix. There's a playful, chase-scene energy running through 'Cold Blood' and 'Jet Raw Tool', with smoky organs and wah guitars trading blows, and 'Payback Run', co-produced by Fusik's Felix, strikes gold with tightly-wound basslines and cinematic horns.
