Abacus - "My Brazilian Love"
Last Session - "Sometimes I Feel Like"
Ron Trent - "Morning Fever"
Ani - "Love Is The Message"
Review: US label Prescription Classics serve up the fourth part in the From The Vaults series. Taking timeless beauties from the archives, Ron Trent's label is now re-issuing these deep dance gems. Part 4 kicks off with Abacus's "My Brazilian Love". Raw chords, delicate swinging hi-hats and perfectly executed percussive sections give it pure soul and groove. Last Session's "Sometimes I Feel" is fuelled by a strong kick that's kept in check by a bassline to die for and sultry vocal snippets. Label boss Ron Trent is up on the flip with "Morning Fever"; its epic guitar riff and chord patterns get as deep and funky as they come, garnished with tinny percussion and low slung momentum. Lastly, "Love Is The Message" from Ani is the "For Those Who Didn't Hear It The First Time" version from 1994. Riding off its tribal percussion and sharp drum taps, the sexy vocals ooze with allure over the constantly driving groove. Essential.

Ron Trent & Chez Damier - "Love Is The Message" (Kai Alce edit) (6:03)
Ron Trent & Chez Damier - "I Come Here To Be Happy" (Kai Alce edit) (6:37)
Review: Looking at the heavyweight cast of producers involved, there was no way this EP was ever going to be anything other than essential. What you get is two reworks of classic Chez Damier and Ron Trent productions - a loose, low-slung, fluttering late night take on "Morning Factory" by BA AS Deep, and a brilliantly sleazy, fuzzy Kai Alce edit of Ani's 1994 throb-job "Love is the Message (Prescription Dub)" - plus what appear to be two fresh, unheard cuts. Arguably the pick of the pair is "Berlin Nights in Paris", a gently acid-flecked chunk of late night deep house hypnotism credited to Damier and Ben Vedren's occasional H2H (Heart 2 Heart) project.

Ralph Lawson, Chez Damier & Carl Finlow - "I Remember Dance" (6:43)
Ron Trent, Chez Damier - "Foot Therapy" (6:35)
Ron Trent, Chez Damier - "Now Is The Time" (5:53)
Review: The incorrigible Master Jams has just gone and reissued four of the hottest Chez Damier cuts, originally out on the timeless - and much coveted - Prescription Records out of Chi-Town. The first cut "I Wouldn't" sees Damier team up with Dpac and T FM to produce a bright and sparkly house groove for the Saturday evening crew, followed by the deeper, jazzier, more disco-centric beats and bass banging of "I Remember Dance" featuring Ralph Lawson and Carl Finlow. The magic comes on the flip, however, where Damier teams up with like-minded legend Ron Trent on the glorious "Foot Therapy", and the rolling punch of drums and bass that is "Now Is The Time". Don't even think twice - cop on sight!

The Place Inside (6:08)
Review: Lavish soul feels from the one and only Trent right here. Having told us about the scientific art of storytelling many years ago, here he returns with his own beautiful yarn about the legend that is Johnny Hammond. Other tales include the sultry, dusky Balearic jam "The Tone" where fretless bass and fluttering brushed drums are the order of the day. Finally "The Place Inside" takes us right out to shore with soft vocal harmonies, light keys and a sense of sunset magic. Salinas crew this one's for you.

Kurt Harmon Project - "Comin' Back"
Ron Trent - "Piano Track"
Review: Prescription Classics continue their sterling effort to reissue Chicago's House music heritage - launching the first in a series of what we hope is many From The Vaults EPs. Originally released way back in 1998, "Coming Back" is a fine example of US Garage from Kurt Harmon, adding a soulful holler that rides the deep bumping rhythms of what was originally Ron Trent's "Pop, Dip and Spin" with natural aplomb. On the flip it's Mr Trent in full effect with the 1995 gem "Piano Track" that swiftly locks into a heavily percussive groove, with swathes of looped piano flourishes and the ever present vocal lead vying for attention amidst some energy driven chord washes.

Review: While we've never been short of versions and issues of the evergreen house classic "Sometimes I Feel Like", it's not so often that the full vocal cut featuring Alton Miller gets an airing, and it sounds resplendent on this remastered reissue. The "Mid 80 Feel Mix" is also present for those who prefer their vocals looping into infinity. The original inhabitant of the B-side remains, with Derrick Carter in an early appearance with the weird and squiggly bump of "Jack Another Day" and the essential rub and tug of "What Do You See" with its moody organ bass and clattering percussion.

The Mission - "Lavida (Life)"
Siler & Dima, Thomas Zander - "Inapropriate"
Ron Trent & Chez Damier - "Choice"
Review: From the executive producer Chez Damier comes a Special Edition release marking the 20th Anniversary of Balance and Prescription records. Opening proceedings are The Mission, a Swiss group whose "Lavida (Life)" was produced by Damier in collaboration with Italian producer Demetrio Giannice; the results are a deep, chord driven number replete with chopped vocals and a notably jazzy feel at the break of the track. Next up are Siler & Dima and Thomas Zander, a trio of young Parisian producers whose more minimally minded "Inappropriate" was clearly conceived with the early works of Ron Trent and Chez Damier in mind. Speaking of Ron and Chez, the B Side is dedicated to a newly remastered version of the rare Prescription Underground mix of the pair's classic "The Choice" which sounds totally fresh some twenty years on.

Review: Over the years, Ron Trent has released some fine albums, all of which have subtly expanded on his trademark soul-flecked, percussion-rich deep house sound. On What Do The Stars Say To You, his first new full-length excursion in 11 years, the Chicago native has taken a different approach, utilising his occasional WARM alias on a stunning set that abandons dancefloor-pleasing in favour of immersive, evocative and ultra-deep blends of ambient, downtempo, jazz-funk and electronica. It's a genuinely brilliant album all told, with a string of impressive guest musicians - including Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros of Azymuth, electric jazz pioneer Jean-Luc Ponty, psychedelic Balearic specialists Khrungbin and Italian ambient maestro Gigi Masin - all making brilliant contributions. In a word: exceptional!

Review: We all know and love Ron Trent as a house music maestro, but as his elevated productions have betrayed over the years, his chops reach well beyond the simple demands of functional club stuff. In line with his more eclectic output, What Do The Stars Say To You heralds his WARM project in a frankly stunning burst of musicality that harks back to the glory days of 70s and 80s studio prowess. This is still music driven by a groove, but it's certainly not a house by numbers affair. Instead you get soaring violin solos (from Jean Luc Ponty no less), infinte threads of nimble keys work and enough downtempo, slinky grooves to buffet a yacht from the Balearics to the Florida Keys and back again. Featuring members of Azymuth, Gigi Masin and Khruangbin amongst others, this is a return to the craft of exquisite album making, as handled by a true master in his field.

Ron Trent has long been an archetypal deep house producer, no matter what alias he assumes. Here he becomes RT Factor on the Electric blue label. Of course, it is another high class and timeless offering that features just one epic 15 minute deep house journey. All the usual traits are present and correct - supple and rubbery drums, spiritual chords and majestic key playing that all effortlessly drift in and out of the mix to make for something smooth flowing and compelling throughout. All these years after starting out and re-writing the rules, Trent is still the man to beat at this deep house game.

RT Factor is one of Ron Trent's less familiar aliases, but rest assured anything graced with the Chicago great's name is a buy on sight situation. So it goes on this latest release for his Electric Blue label, which is a single-sided 15-minute epic that will have fans grinning with satisfaction and newcomers wondering what they've been missing all this time. The extended run time gives Trent free reign to let his musical motifs unfurl in a relaxed manner - this is one of the all time greats of soulful deep house after all - but there's also power and presence in the electronic elements of the sound on "EBS 1". All the better to carry the airy keys and pattering hand drums - these trademark ingredients never sound better than in Trent's hands.

What Does It Mean? (12:45)
Review: Chicago house master Ron Trent is back on his own Electric Blue stable, surfaces back onto our shelves under his iconic RT Factor alias. No introduction is needed for this man and what he's done for house music since the early 1990's, so we'll just go straight to the music, and see what he's onto in early 2016. The A-side is populated by "Who Are We?", a bumpy, energetic house lick with a full groove made up of layers upon layers of pads, rich melodies, and euphoric vocals - a true house beaut. On the flip, "What Does It Mean" is harder and a little deeper, but Tren't sense of music still heavily features thanks to a gorgeous line of piano keys. The good shit.

Review: This is one of those records that you just know is going to be good when you see the personnel involved. Ron Trent is, of course, one of the most talented and decorated deep house producers of all time, while beat poet Ursula Rucker has contributed inspiring spoken word vocals to countless house and broken beat cuts over the years. She's naturally in prime form on the original version of 'Black Queen', delivering an enticing, thought-provoking and increasingly energetic lead vocal over a backing track that sits somewhere between Trent's classic, Prescription-era deep house works and the breezier, more Latin-tinged sound he's been exploring over the last few years. The accompanying instrumental take is almost as good: a 12-minute, late-night deep house classic in the making.

Review: S.A.T. is the new production unit formed of Jerome Sydenham, AYBEE and Ron Trent, three individuals whose respective discographies command instant respect. What apparently started as a simple dinner one night has grown into a full album between the three who evidently struck on a studio chemistry that warrants further material on the strength of this eight track album. Issued by Sydenham's Ibadan label, SAT lives up to the sales notes billing as "loose and organic" and cuts like "The Gate" and "She Was" have that timeless quality one expects from a project Ron Trent is involved in. It all feels remarkably cohesive despite the fact the trio completed the album in under three weeks.

All six mixes from the original 12" are present in remastered form. Four of these come from Trent himself: the wonderfully warming, sparkling and starry 'Ron Soulful Mix' (which some would argue provided a blueprint for his later work with Chez Damier), the stripped-back and sub-heavy 'Bass Shaker Mix', the riff-driven joyousness of the 'Underground Mix' and the sleazy, sub-heavy and alien-sounding 'Beatnik Mix'. The remaining mixes are by 'executive producer' Braxton Holmes: the dense, breathless and sweaty '326 Mix' and the classic Chicago deepness of the 'Smooth Mix'.

This is the third release from his forthcoming Romantic Flight album and is a real house lament. He is in particularly spiritual mode here with 'Black Romantic' being a delicate house dance with sprinklings of percussion, acoustic guitar sounds and streaming synths all sinking you into a reverie while vocals drift up top. A-side "Night Ride" sees him get busy with a vintage drum machine, adding whispered vocals, colourful riffs, undulating synth-bass and chiming melodies to a distinctive rhythm track. It's every bit as delicious and enveloping as you'd expect, with flipside opener "On A Journey" offering a surprise Balearic diversion rich in sun-kissed guitar motifs, swirling chords and a tactile, slow-motion groove. The sunset-friendly fun continues on "Exhale", where rock style guitar solos are buried beneath shuffling samba-house beats and Trent's usual impeccable keys.

Review: While Ron Trent has always tended towards the prolific, his recent release schedule has been particularly jam-packed. African Indigenous Rhythms is his second 12" single of 2017, and contains two sparkling, spacey deep house cuts blessed with subtle Afro influences. We think the real killer is "Power Movement", where the legendary Chicagoan douses a shape-shifting, Afro-influenced rhythm with intergalactic electronics, bubbly motifs, a deliciously jaunty synth bassline, and some seriously woozy vocal harmonies. That said, A-side "The Dawn" is fantastic too, with Trent's gradually increasing the intensity throughout via energy-packed drum machine fills, cascading piano motifs, and darting synth solos.

Review: We would never be ones to challenge the importance and authority of Chicago's infamous Prescription label, a project in which Ron Trent played a fundamental role, but his more recent years on the Music And Power label aren't exactly a million miles away. This is true both in sound and general aesthetic, where Trent opts to communicate his thoughts and feelings through the medium of music. "Boogie Down", as the title suggests, is a little more funky and bass-heavy compared to his more usual deep house flex, but it makes for a welcome change to his catalogue, and any boogie made by Ron Trent is just fine with us. On the flip, "In The Light" is full of rigged percussion samples, wavy piano keys, and a jazzy bass tone, in what makes for a splendidly groovy disco-house cut. Lovely, as always, and you'll dig this if you're a fan of Kyle Hall and his output on Wild Oats.

Review: Chicago house legend Ron Trent still has the magic touch. It's getting close to thirty years since his first releases began trickling out of the second generation of the Windy City's house scene, but the producer and DJ still knows how to lay down the utter truth. "Time & Space" is a classic Trent joint, where the spark is lit thanks to warm glow of dubby beats accompanied by sweet, mesmerising licks of instruments floating in mid-air. "Bass To Love" is as gentle and moving, but the sounds linger towards the higher end of the tune, where driving pads fuse gracefully with cascading synth solos to form a thick and wide-eyed wall of house for the deeper end of the DJ spectrum.

Review: Music And Power is home to Ron Trent's contemporary material, and by that we mean the best deep house around; music that is ultimately for dancing but that champions a deeply musical style akin to jazz and soul. "Liquid Love", for instance, is a gorgeous meandering of synths and smooth vocals riding high over a chunky house beat, complete with a reprise mix full of Balearic edge as a follow-up. "Sound System Prevail" is a bumpier, more hard-edged and spewing delicate pianos left, right and centre beneath another wave of masterful synth solos. 10 out of 10 from the master of Chicago sexiness.

Deep In The Stars (8:00)
Rock The Box (8:20)
Review: There's a delicious simplicity to the concept behind Rawax's Aira series, which involves much-lauded producers creating new tracks entirely using Roland's retro-futurist equipment series of the same name. Given Ron Trent's association with the machines the series was inspired by - TR-909, TB-303 etc. - he was clearly an obvious choice to get involved. As usual, he's conjured up some classically melodious, evocative and emotion-rich material. "Deep In The Stars" sees him in late '80s/early '90s deep house mode, with twittering melodies and ocean-deep pads wrapping themselves around a decidedly tactile groove. "Rock The Box" is typically expansive, with robotic vocals and a whisper of electro amongst the sweeping chords and intricate synthesizer motifs.

Hi Life Jump (12:08)
Review: Alert! New material from Chicago legend Ron Trent available on red vinyl! The man has always kept on releasing since his pioneering work of the 90's and it's incredible to hear just how contemporary he's been able to keep himself. This latest number "Hi Life Jump" is a perfectly balanced mixture of percussion-heavy deep house and beautiful piano keys, and it takes a talent like this one to make the blend work as tight as this. Pretty essential.

Review: Love Affair has long been one of Ron Trent's most in-demand 12" singles. It was originally released on Clubhouse Records back in 1992, and has since become something of a must-have for fans of the Chicagoan's particularly brand of musically rich deep house. This timely reissue on the ever-reliable Chiwax imprint features all six mixes from the original 12", from the emotive, piano-laden sweetness of Ron's Soulful Mix, to the sweaty, low-slung groove of Ron's Beatnik Mix. There's also a pair of rather fine reworks from Braxton Holmes, a once-lauded Chicago producer whose last solo release sadly came 12 years ago.

You'll Never Find (dub)
Review: It's a long-established fact that few producers can produce deep house of such stunning depth and musicality as Ron Trent. While dancefloor-friendly, his productions are the mucial equivalent of being gently caressed by a loved one. Certainly, that's the feel of "You'll Never Find", a typically deep, typically epic composition blessed with sublime vocals and wonderful music touches (think cascading synth solos, gentle acoustic guitars, wtinkling pianos, and dreamy chords). The accompanying dub accentuates many of these elements, using choice vocal passages to emphasize the Chicagoan's impeccable instrumentation and brilliant production. Any Ron Trent record is a treat, but "You'll Never Find" somehow feels extra-special.

Aybees Blakspace Federation (Slap mix)
Review: Taking a proud stance loaded with an explicit message, Ron Trent truly excels himself as a deep house great with an innate understanding of how to channel his African roots into contemporary music. The A side of Manifesto features the "Bewe Effect" mix, which first reveals Trent's diatribe on what he stands for, while the drums snake and snap underneath in a tracky but utterly engrossing groove of tribal house. The original mix of "Manifesto" meanwhile smooths out those percussive edges with a more delicate arrangement of bongos and congas intertwining with winsome keys of a perfectly balanced nature. Aybee steps up for his own "Blakspace Federation" version that reaches to a more dubby construction with focused, pumping drums and simmering melodies that provides an equally apt vessel to Trent's musings.

Never Too Far Away
Review: Three highlights from 2011's stunning album of the same name. Each one sees Trent returning to the mid 90s, revisiting some of his most formative moments and most enduring ideas and sketches. "CE100" is a fireside groove kindled by endless organ blasts, heartbeat percussion and infectious hi-hats (Think Mr De's Renaissance project) "Big Medicine" takes this loose, layered organ warmth further again, featuring none other than Leroy Burgess on keys it builds and builds with organic intent. "Never Too Far Away" shows the Ron at his most soulful. Slinky, jazzy and downtempo, it's the perfect comedown to his more insistent rhythms. Beautiful.

Review: The 12" version of Ron Trents Raw Footage LP selects four of the best suited cuts from the CD album for the vinyl format. "Blood & Fire" is repetitious in composition with Trent's use of reverberating bells, monotoned synth hits and bit crushed shakers. The rest of the EP moves into deep house, even slightly tropical territory. "Atmosphere" wallows in tribal percussion, porno synths and delay as does "Pressure Zone", almost a dub version of the latter. "Space Dance" is a cerebral deep house pleasure replete with breathy male vocals, drawn out chords and heartfelt undertones.

Review: Ron Trent is back with more jackin' beats, this time via a Prescription Records reissue of Altered States. The title track sees cheering synths at full capacity to-and-fro with ear shattering snares and Chicagoan drums. The winched kicks and percussion of "Afterlife" make for a similar groove and sonic to Steve Poindexter's '89 club hit "Work That Mutha" while "Making Love" is an analogue orgy of drum machines and deep house authenticity.

Review: An essential re-issue of Ron Trent's "Seduction" from the kindly folks at Slow To Speak. The track first featured on the A Dark Room And A Feeling 12" on the long defunct UK imprint Subwoofer back in 1995, and still feels oven warm today. Melodic pads, female and male vox working in glorious harmony, spray can percussion and synth work handled with precision; this is a lesson to all the pretenders out there. This is an absolute must for fans of Parrish, KDJ and Prescription Records.

1985 (9:16)
Review: Ron Trent rarely does things by halves, packing his effortlessly soulful and musically expansive deep house tracks with all manner of elements. Even so, there's something undeniably epic about this heartfelt, ten-minute tribute to Music Box legend Ron Hardy. Featuring the twin attractions of overlapping spoken and sung vocals (from Cei Bei and Harry Dennis), "Tribute To Ron Hardy" is notably more electronic and European-influenced than many of the great man's productions. Its' shuffling, rising drum machine rhythms and colourful, lopped synth refrain are its' strongest suit, but the whole track is, of course, delicious. Either way, it's a fitting tribute.

While many have imitated, no one has ever really come close to crafting the sort of spiritually affective deep house that Ron Trent kicks out with apparent ease. 'Black Magic Woman' is a prime example - an ode to the power of the feminine form with vocals from Harry Dennis, most known for his previous work with Larry Heard. The original is a deep house epic with jazzy chords and organic drums, lashing of bass and spoken word musings from Dennis. The Joaquin edit & Overdubs version is more intense and bright and the Coflo remix is more soft, mellifluous and warm. Epic stuff with great artwork, too.

I Will Be There
Review: Joe Clausell has apparently been a big supporter of this latest 12" from deep house legend Ron Trent. It's not hard to see why. The A-side version of "In Time", featuring the quietly soulful vocals of Tkumah Sadeek, sounds like the sort of record Clausell has long championed - a comfortable, heady and calming fusion of jazz-influenced drums, twinkling pianos, subtle chords and wisely placed delays. It's the kind of track that puts its' arms round your shoulders and gently leads you towards the dancefloor. The flipside version is an altogether livelier proposition, with warmer bass and denser, more energetic, Afro-influenced percussion.

Review: Ron Trent adds another record to the catalogue of Future Vision with Crossroads. The first of the three mixes - the vocal mix - sees descending piano keys fall upon ascending pads and punchy licks of acid bass, while a cabasa lead house groove drives the track in territory labels like Head Kandi could only dream about reaching. Sharing the A-side is a reprise which features almost everything from the original - except for the kick drum - giving the vocals even more importance than the vocal mix. The dub version doesn't deviate too far from the original either, following a similar trajectory - building from a slow and mesmeric sequence into a full bodied and dreamlike groove.

Review: Groovin can always be relied on for the finest deep house reissues and represses, and they've struck Prescription gold here with the hazy sway of Ron Trent and Anthony Nicholson's evergreen "Aquarhythmatica." In its smoky chords and freewheeling guitars, the dusted down track represents everything great and timeless about this absolute pillar of deep house. On the flip, Ron Trent flies solo with "City Beat," which originally appeared in 2009 on the "Dance Classic" album. From the rich layers of detail to the mellow mood and of course the infectious, organic grooves, the quality level and musicality on this rich vein of house music is quite simply astounding.

Review: LA-based band ASHRR picked up plenty of new fans with their recent Sunshine Low album and now they're back with the sixth single from it and it comes with some seriously heavyweight names on the remix. Chicago house pioneer Ron Trent does his thing to 'Please Don't Stop The Rain' by going super deep, spine tingling and heady with some lush arps and distant guitar twangs adding a Balearic feel. Dub treatments come from the Prescription boss himself, while ASHRR's alter ego, ASHRR Soundsystem, offer up an instrumental and a remix that lay down dubby house drums and lush chord work. This one keeps the summer vibes going well into winter.

Berlin Night In Paris (Fred H remix)
Cry (Sourires remix)
Review: Two legendary producers joined production forces in 1999 to create one timeless track that sees the light of day again here. Ron Trent and old friend Chez Damier were co-owners of one of the most important house labels of all time - Prescription Records - and they re-teamed up for this deep house classic for Ron's first full length album Primitive Arts. For the remix package, Atjazz deliveres an extended remix that amplifies the groove while maintaining the soulful depth of the original. Atjazz's signature melodic refinement and rhythmic precision shine through, making this version more uplifting yet hypnoticia lush reinterpretation that still respects its deep-rooted heritage. On Side-B, two more Ron Trent gems receive modern reworks. First up, 'Berlin Night in Paris' (Fred H Remix) transforms the 2017 track from 'Spaces and Places' EP into a chord-driven, tech-house-infused journey. Lastly, 'Cry' (Sourires Remix) delivers an atmospheric deep house experience, rich in space and emotion. Subtle yet powerful, this remix explores introspective tones, balancing melody and groove with a meditative feel. Together, these remixes further reinforce the already vast legacy of Trent and Damier in deep house history.
