Review: "Keep it trippy..." There sure aren't that many Rhythm Cults out there that we know of, and this Barcelona-based sect is certainly one we'd like to join. Celebrating ten years in operation, the label here brings back a cross-section of artists who've helped sculpt its distinctive sound. The new anniversary edition aquaplanes the murky edges of house, techno, and experimental electronics, spotlighting the minimal yet girthy dance stylistics of Funk D'Void, Aquarius Heaven, Samuel L Session and more. From early signings to recent collaborators, we've a decades' worth of tunes on our hands here, all re-centring a darkly sophisticated house sound.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Personality Disorder Music is only early in its adventures in the label world but is already turning some heads. The fourth outing from the crew brings together some accomplished underground mainstays for four tracks of twisted tech. There is an edgy vibe to the opener 'Deception' with its throwback breakbeats powering along warped bass, and spoken word snippets adding a sultry twist. 'What Are We Doing' is a stringy and skeletal minimal groove peppered with twangs and hits, sine waves and toms. The B-side melon twisters are just as good with 'Chaos' (feat Mari Kvien Brunvoll) in particular having a nice occult cosmic edge.

Review: Following previous drops from Lukey, Enzo Leep and dot13, Into The Wizard's Sleeve welcomes David G Tronic and Reboot for a taut trip through high-end electro for all razor-sharp selectors. 'Leave Your Body' is a bouncy affair with an ear-snagging snatch of toasting certain to get the floor loosened up good and proper. 'Loose' meanwhile is anything but, revolving round a punchy beatdown and choice vocoder licks. 'Mind Games' heads into the zone between electro and tech house, while 'Orlando Bass' lets a few boogie licks sneak into the mix around the sleek 808 drums with sparkling results.

Jay Haze - "I Wait For You" (feat Laila Tov - Bozoo Bajou remix)
Jay Haze & Reboot - "My Baby Knows" (feat Lil Dirrty Ghetto Bastard - Reboot Bootygrabber remix)
Review: A remix EP here that marks the last release of Jay Haze's Contexterrior and Tuning Spork imprints, with one side dedicated to each label. The Contexterrior side sees two reworkings of "I Wait For You"; Laila Tov's vocals gave the original a fairly Latin sensibility, but King Britt's remix elects to create a much more atmospheric version, beginning with a moody piano intro, before launching into a rumbling bassline that brings out the darker qualities in the original vocal. Bozoo Bajou meanwhile creates a much more minimal interpretation, really highlighting the breathier elements of the vocal, before the track breaks into something altogether more melancholy as it brings in some understated piano chords. The Tuning Spork side meanwhile sees Reboot remixing his own collaboration with Jay Haze, "My Baby Knows". His reworking takes away the sleazier tone of the original, bringing the melancholy piano to the forefront and creating something altogether more soulful, keeping Lil Dirty Ghetto Bastard's vocals until the end and pitching them right down, ending on a curiously sedate note.

Brett Johnson & Jay Haze - "Lost In Berlin"
Review: Jay Haze recently announced he was turning his back on the music industry, but despite his disillusionment he seems intent on signing off in style. With his latest album set to drop imminently, we are treated to this star studded12 inch entitled Collabs With Jay Haze. Ricardo Villalobos, Reboot, DJ Sneak and Brett Johnson all feature, with the joint studio sessions having all taken place at the now extinct Ultradope Syndrome studio in Berlin. The gentle bump of the Villalobos hookup "Fenlow" will understandably attract much attention, but it's the synth laden "Freak A Bitch Out", featuring the knob twiddling talents of DJ Sneak, that has us most excited, sounding like what Virgo would come with if they moved to Berlin.

Review: OLO Records returns for its eighth edition with a powerful collaboration between Miroloja and Reboot, delivering three distinct tracks that span minimal, electro, and techno influences. The A-side kicks off with '9 Ufo's', an otherworldly minimal cut that keeps things deep and atmospheric. On the flip, 'Drip' leans into a more driving electro sound, while 'Daddyswing' closes the EP with a groovy techno touch, blending rhythmic sophistication with a dancefloor-ready energy. With early support from Ricardo Villalobos, this release is one to watch for those craving variety and quality in one package.

Review: The freshly minted Occult Vision label has a distinctively different ethos and approach. It was established to release full-length excursions (that's albums, kids) only, thus offering producers they work with the chance to stretch their musical legs (so to speak). For the label's debut, they've turned to long-serving Frankfurt producer Frank Heinrich. His first LP since 2016, On A Grind sees the German frequently blur the boundaries between tech-house and deep house, with solid and sub-heavy grooves being overlaid with a mixture of heady sonic textures, glassy-eyed vocal samples, glitchy percussion, twinkling keys and tipsy, mind-mangling musical motifs. Highlights include the jazzy tech-house dustiness of 'Tombant Jazz', the deep and heady shuffle of 'Sweat', the ragged, acid-fired hedonism of 'Outwork' and the sweat-soaked peak-time pump of the nostalgic title track.

Review: Reboot and Cecile are two names that will mean a lot to long time tech house fans. They have been shaping its sound for more than 15 years so for them to be reunited has some fine nostalgic appeal. This EP opens with 'Ready To Flow' which is a thumping cut that's dense with warped voices and metallic synths. 'Alicat' is a more lo-fi affair with dusty drums and heart aching vocals that add a nagging melancholy to the chugging drums. 'Red House' shuts down with some edgy breakbeats driving along beneath trippy out synth details. Captivating stuff as ever from this German mainstay.

Make You Move (7:27)
Alternate (6:08)
Unstop (7:48)
Review: Reboot has been committed to the art of minimal tech house for a long time now, and his sound evolves with the same measured elegance as his DJ sets. There's space for balmy deep house chords and disco loops in the stew now, but crisp functionality and tracky immersion remains the order of the day as 'Make You Move' locks into to its seductive arrangement. 'Alternate' toys with swirling, dubby synth work around the steadfast beat, while 'Unstop' piles on a little more hand-drum action for a dense, engrossing rhythm workout - whichever mood you're after and however long you want to ride them, these tracks won't let you down in the mix.

Review: Veteran of the Frankfurt scene Frank Heinrich aka Reboot makes a surprising appearance on local underground imprint Pleasure Zone here with 'Bombons', a blissed-out and evocative minimal tech house journey that's strictly made for the afterhours slot, all the while retaining his idiosyncratic sound throughout. The sublime feelings continue over on the flip with the widescreen, steel drum-led melody on 'Tell Me' which goes deeper and triggers an even more emotional response. This is highly engineered microhouse by a modern master of the art.

Review: A deep and polyrhythmic Brazilian house excursion. 'Caminando' tore up many a dancefloor nine years ago, but it was not created in Rio De Janeiro but rather Frankfurt Am Main, and by one of the city's favourite sons - Frank Heinrich aka Reboot. Heinrich sampled a Geraldo Vandre production which featured vocals by Simone Bittencourt de Oliveira, and really added the dancefloor dynamics needed to turn a new generation onto this classic song. This repress on RBT Classic is sure to be in high demand, with the original fetching exorbitant amounts on the second hand market - don't sleep on this one!

Review: Reboot seems to have been around for ages. He was there for minimal there for tech house, and is now here for something that sits in between. '57 Punch Man' shows off his well-learned studio know-how with cavernous drum loops detailed by sustained chords and metallic percussion. It's music to cruise to. 'Sherbet' is looser, with melodic sequences rising and fall over a well-swung groove that soon sweeps you up. The best of the lot might be closer 'Wonderbrett' with its snatched vocals, slippery drums and perc and constant sense of rising, unresolved tension.

Review: For his latest trip into wonky, late night techno territory, long-serving producer Frank 'Reboot' Heinrich has enlisted the noted remixing skills of minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos. While the Frankfurt producer's original version is undeniably skewed in its approach - think quirky vocals over shuffling tech-house rhythms and trippy electronic noises - it's positively sane in comparison to Villalobos' two versions. The first, a mere 12 minutes in duration, boasts a thrilling combination of twisted acid lines, oddball vocals and effects-laden, jazz-inspired techno drums. The second, which stretches out across the entire B-side, is utterly bonkers: a psychedelic electronic jazz opus that bobs and weaves for 25 mesmerizing minutes.

Review: There's something deeply personal about this second album from German minimal techno producer Frank Heinrich. Named Deep V as a tribute to his late brother, who used that recording alias, it sees the former Cadenza and Cocoon man deliver a typically hypnotic set of late night techno grooves. With rhythms and soundscapes intensified through the use of field recordings made around the world, and an understandably melancholic tone, it's arguably Heinrich's best work to date. It shuffles impressively, offering the sort of tactile techno grooves that make the most sense in vast spaces at five in the morning. It's a fitting tribute to his brother, that's for sure.

Review: Frank Heinrich returns here with a second LP under his universally recognisable Reboot moniker and it's an album inspired by deeply personal motivation with Deep V billed as a tribute to the German producer's late brother. Having built his name with 12" output for the likes of Cocoon and Cadenza as well as released his 2010 debut LP for the latter; Heinrich finds another suitable home in the Deep Vibes Recordings label run by compatriot Sascha Dive. The full six track album - available on CD and digital - was apparently crafted whilst Heinrich was on his travels and sees the producer working with field recordings taken at a number of locations and fed through machines at his studio in Offenbach. This vinyl version lifts the four most club friendly cuts and places them across two slabs of vinyl.

Review: Percussion, rhythms and intricate polyrhythms have always laid down the foundations of Reboot's music ever since he first arrived on the scene three years ago. Since that debut, "Be Tougher / Letters" from back in 2007 on Luciano's Cadenza imprint, the talented German has made a fast and steep rise to becoming one of dance music's hottest properties. He has seen single and EP releases on Cocoon, Below, Love Letters from Oslo, Motivbank, Below and Ricardo Villalobos' Sei Es Drum imprint in addition to highly acclaimed mix CDs for Cocoon and Cécille. Shunyata, his first ever LP marks his return to Cadenza and keeps his ever flowing, tribal polyrhythms at the centre of its sound.

Its title is loosely translated from its Buddhist origins as ‘emptiness’ which is not used here in a negative sense but as a reference to the album’s state of impermanence and constant state of flux. Utilising the album format, Reboot manages to make the individual tracks start at one point and lead to somewhere completely different, keeping the entire record moving in a constant and kaleidoscopic motion. He builds these spiralling grooves or intricate polyrhythms by interconnecting instruments such as congas, bells, cymbals, woodblocks, shakers, steely drums and aluminium barrels, binding them together to weave an evolving groove. Added to that, stranger sound elements such as field recordings, cut up, distorted vocals, pings and gurgles permeate the percussion layers whilst a spongy bed of compressed bass fills the low end.

The focus is once more on the dancefloor as tracks like the peaktime "Hermano," the deepness of "Dreliach" the hypnotic "Me Show," and the darker vibes of "Save Me" all play testament to. However, there are also some more unexpected moments such as the skipping and melodic "Rambon," the spiralling "Down Pantha," the sedate opener "Uruana" and the sampled guitar that appears on "Sanchez Says." It's very structural nature makes Shunyata an album in the true sense of the word, demanding full and repeat listens to fully appreciate its beauty.

Uruana (Luciano remix)
Review: Luciano’s Cadenza Records continues to flourish in this, its sixth year. Last month saw them launch the new digital offshoot, Cadenza Lab and now Cadenza proper reaches a significant milestone of its own, their 50th release. For this landmark release we see the burgeoning imprint return to Reboot’s Shunyata album from earlier this month to deliver this unmissable two tracker. Featuring album track "Rambon" and a Luciano remix of "Urana," this is a real treat that cuts to the core of Cadenza’s heart.

"Rambon," which also appeared in the later stages of Reboot’s Essential Mix at the end of last year, harks to all the spontaneity and dynamics of Reboot’s much celebrated live sets. Seemingly crafted with the art of DJing in mind, the track builds in the German’s trademark orgasmically visceral way. Based around what Reboot has termed himself, ‘a complex polyrhythmic rhythm’, the groove evolves in a masterful way, each percussive line snapping in to place perfectly. However, underneath this naturally grooving rhythm lies an undertow of strangeness garnered by a collection of everyday sounds such as the clatter of dishes, faint radio signals and pitched down murmurings. After some tightly looped vocals and subtle percussive build-ups, Reboot manages to craft a unique sense of melody, not in a traditional sense but instead wrapped in a strong hypnotism.

On the flip, Luciano reworks album opener, "Urana." Stretching it to over ten minutes, the remix feels more like an edit with the label boss changing very little. What he does do though, is get straight into the groove rather than guiding the track gradually out of the fog as the original does. With its cautious pitter patter drums, rippling percussion, bright arpeggios and smoky feel, this is Luciano expanding on Reboot’s vibe as only he can.
